Burning Embers

▕▁▁▁▁▁▁▵▁▁▁▁▁▁▏

The Kingdom of Ederia is famed for a lot of things, attaining high praise from all those that look upon her. However, there is one thing Ederia is most renowned for: Dragon Riders. The only Kingdom to have come up with a way to tame the legendary beasts, to ride upon their backs as one. It has been like this for decades, perhaps even centuries, few really know. And, together in harmony, Dragons and Humans have lived, creating a proserpous nation.

The Dragon Academy of Ederia is like none other, literally there are no others known to the world. A place where young students who have been lucky enough to be chosen by their dragons go to learn to become the most revered role in all of Ederia: Dragon Riders. Few are selected, as dragons are known to be an entirely selective species, but those who are chosen must learn quickly, and that is where the Academy comes in. Exerpienced riders teach the fledgling riders and their dragons how to work together as one, as well as everything the youths will need to know about dragons and what they are up against in the world.

It sounds like a beautiful, wonderful place, right?

Too bad all good things must come to an end.

Jealous nations, wanting to claim the glory for themselves and bring down Ederia have set their sights on destroying the Academy. It was only a matter of time before the succeeded too. One night, the forces of another Kingdom infilitrated the Kingdom, intent on burning it all. And they did. The Academy was destroyed, the cities burned, and it's occupants, the ones who tried to resist and fight back, were slaughtered. In hopes of preserving a little bit of their legacy so that hope would remain, the Leaders of Ederia and the Dragon Riders commanded the students to flee, to survive, to learn.

As the battle raged on for Ederia, the students fled, looking back on the carnage behind them, hoping that one day they could come back and restore their beloved Kingdom.

The Beginning
Make Sure You Read This.

The sun shines brightly in the sky, it's rays caressing the valley below, the mountains casting cool shadows from where they stand. There is a hush shudder among the crowd as their whispers get swept away in the wind. Few seemed to dare to speak louder, like they were afraid that if they did it would all turn out to be a dream. Fortunately for them, it is not.

The hopefully-soon-to-be dragon riders now all stand in the clearing among their peers with baited breath as they wait for the dragons to arrive. Most of them hope they'll be chosen as the next team of riders, however, most of them won't be so lucky. All they can do now, though, is wait for the dragons to arrive and make their picks. It's all out of their hands now.

Soon the Dragons will arrive to the Valley of the Dragon, and descend into it to pick their rider, their bond leading them to knowing which one it is. They don't know how they know it's them, but something in their chest, in their heart, says it is. They'll know upon sighting their rider who it is, but their bond won't snap into place until there is physical contact between the two, which is a feat for some of the dragons already. This bond allows for each to feel the strong emotions of the other, and allows them to speak telepathically to one another. This bond is like a pull, often able to be used by one to find the other if they're lost and so on. It's a magical and mysterious thing that none really know anything about.

Setting
It's important to note that this takes place in more medieval times, so no modern day technology, clothing, weaponry, etc.
It's a mild morning, nothing too cold or hot. The sun is out, with only a few clouds dotting the sky. There is a gentle breeze on the air as well. It's early to mid spring right now.

Dragon Valley
Everyone knows about the choosing place, also called Dragon Valley, many even know where it is, though it only ever holds the dragons and riders for the ceremony at the specific times for the different ceremonies. To put it simply, the Choosing Place is a valley that combines the prime terrains for all dragon times. Grassy plains cover most of the center of the valley, dense, heavy forests line the sides of the valley. There is a lake at the back of the valley that butts up against the mountains there, and it is as deep as any and capable of providing a comfortable place for water dragons to reside. Surrounding the entire valley are tall mountains, ideal for earth dragons to climb, while the soil of the entire valley is loose enough for earth dragons, even young ones, to dig through. This allows the dragons to take their riders on their "First Ride" trial, to complete the bond as Dragon and Rider.

___________________________

For the Beginning of the Rp
The posts will start at the Choosing Ceremony. It doesn't have a special name, but it's where the dragons come and choose their riders. The choosing day happens once to twice a year, dependent entirely on how many unclaimed dragons arrive at the school throughout the year after sensing their rider. Typically they do it once enough riders graduate to free up space, but they'll do it a second time if there is a flux of unclaimed dragons who enter the school grounds to wait for the next Choosing Day.

For the Choosing Day
All the eligible students will arrive at a great clearing, their futures uncertain. They have no idea if they'll get chosen or not, as the number of humans always greatly out numbers the number of dragons. However, the dragons know their rider is there. There is really no rhyme or reason to how they know, they just do, it's like a feeling, an instinct.

The humans will stay in the clearing until all the dragons have chosen their rider. The instinct within the dragons will lead them to their rider, and when they find them, the mind link with snap into place, something that will be mentally felt automatically by the dragons, but only by the human when the dragon speaks or touches the human for the first time.

The mental link may be painful for some of the humans upon first contact, mental or physical, but it'll pass in short moments. The link will be weak at first, extending only about 10 feet, before it is barely felt. It'll grow in strength over time, until it can remain strong over long distances.

However, a peaceful and joyous day will all turn to hellfire and blood when a neighboring Kingdom decides to attack. No one really knows what is happening until it's too late. Troops of warriors, groups of warriors, and several mages all fall upon the Kingdom of Ederia like a tidal wave, a well exucated plan to completely decimate and cripple Ederia so they have no choice but to kneel, to submit.

With no other choice between to flee or feel the sword, the newly paired riders and dragons will have to attempt their first ride in order to escape. They have no training, no gear, and the constant threat of death at their backs, but I suppose if they fall to their deaths it won't be their problem anymore. Still, as dragons and experienced riders fall in defense of Ederia while others are ambushed and silenced forever, the group has no choice. They must go or potentially meet the same fate as their comrades.

_________________________

Basically, we're going to post for the whole choosing ceremony, but before anything can really happen, the Kingdom will be attack, and people will be put to slaughter. You'll have about 3 posts for your characters at most before the attack begins, so keep that in mind when you're posting. These first ones will likely be some of the longest ones.

Water Dragon | M | Mentions: Open

Wide nostrils exhaled loudly as the water dragon floated mostly just below the surface. Only his nose was above the water, allowing him to remain submerged while being able to breathe. His tail floated behind him, gently swaying now and thent to keep him floating in position.

A soft growl rumbled in his chest and he pulled his nostrils down, closing them as he did so no water would enter his sinuses. Turning to the side the male swam lazily through the water, before diving deeper down, not at all in any hurry to reveal himself and approach the humans. He would be prefer to be in his own territory, swimming the murky waters of his home. It wasn't a lazy life for the most part, patrolling to ensure nothing threatened his reign over it, but it was his life, and he was proud of it. He had earned his territory, and continued to prove regularly that he was the King of the Area.

Now, though? He had to throw it all away because of a human? The disgust was clear on the male's face, and had he not been under the water he would have snorted at the thought. Movement to his side had the male whipping around, jaws snaping to clench around an unsuspecting fish that didn't get out of the way in time. With a rumble of approval the male propeled himself to the surface and jumped out onto the land. He set the fish down and set into tearing into it. He, now that he had food, did not care if the humans saw him, so long as they stayed away.

Laying down the male set to idly munching on the fish, water dripping of the layered scales of his greyish tan hide. His claws kept the large fish in his grasp he as basically gnawed on it, turning it to more like a fish slurry as he chewed instead of just eating it like he good. Perhaps part of him wanting to turn the stomachs of those who dared watch. His eyes, though, did keep watch for other dragons as he gnawed. He knew some were around while others may not have arrived yet. It was just going to be too crowded for his liking.

Nina Rinell Tamborello
Dragon Rider | Female | 17 Yrs | Mentions: Open

A petite girl with hair that looked like orange flame stood among the crowd. A mischievous grin had spead over her features as her friends and her whispered to one another. Determined to be one of the ones getting a first look, she began to push to the front of the crowd. It was only fair, since a lot of her peers stood taller than her. She didn't apologize as she moved, expertly zig-zagging through the group with expert ease.

It didn't take a lot of time or effort for her to reach the front, and once she did she stood with a bewildered curiosity on her face. She couldn't see any of the dragons yet, though she suspected some of them likely were already looking at them. From what she had heard dragons often saw you before you saw them, as they could be known to be quite elusive beasts. This wasn't something she truly understood, she was always the type to be seen and heard, she made efforts to stand out from the crowd. Though usually it just came naturally for her to.

Today was different though. Instead of trying to stand out above the crowd, she had tried to blend in. Her parents had tried to forbid her from going, but she had snuck out with her friends anyways to go. She knew her chances of getting picked were slim at best, but she had never gone before and this year she decided would be different. So she had tried to dress down for the occasion, hoping no one who knew her parents would see her and drag her away kicking and screaming.

She had merely brushed her hair today, leaving it straight and bland instead of trying to put accessories in it. She had even left most of her jewelry at home, only leaving with a couple of bracelets and a necklace on. Even her bracelets were simple, thin gold bands that hung loose on her wrists. Her necklace, though, was a deep garnet jeweled pendant with a gold chain. She thought it was fitting as the garnet jem was oval in shape, and the metal bypass frame it sat in with the clear gems surrounding the garnet made it look like a red dragon's eye. Her clothes were less flashy than normal, and not the normal clothes she would wear. They were older, more worn, things she wore when she was at home or doing chores. She wore a pale pink skirt that was a thicker material so that it wasn't so easily blown around nor was it sheer. She wore a pale ivy colored blouse that was a slightly lighter material than her skirt. The blouse was slightly off her shoulders, and had loose sleaves that tied half way down her forearm. Around her waist and over her shirt was a dark tan colored belt several inches wide. It was cinched tight over her flat stomach, little frills on each side of it giving her a decorative edge. On her feet were a pair of worn boots the same color as the belt around her waist. They were flat, so they held no heel and were easy for her to run around in if necessary.

Movement by the lake in the valley caught her eye as the first dragon made his appearance. He seemed to show no interest in them as he laid down to begin eating what appeared to be a large fish. She grimaced as he just seemed to chew on it, and she looked away, not really wanting to watch him munch any longer. Still, she couldn't help but wonder when the other dragons would start showing up. Surely it would be soon right?

Rhyhor
Male | Storm Dragon | Mentions: Ryuu
Indirectly: Murk, A lot of others, I guess, just those at the ceremony

Rhyhor knew he stuck out against the green around most of the valley, large, imposing, and dark grey. He didn't try to blend in, sitting upon his haunches with his wings supporting the rest of his weight. Beside him, Ryuu, a venom dragon the same size as him, was resting more comfortably.

He craned his head, sifting his eyes through the crowd to find Henry, his rider. If he had to guess, he'd say that Henry was probably with Juniper, a human he'd also met and, somehow, grown quite fond of.

"They'll be fine," Ryuu muttered, baritone vocals rumbling beside him, even though the venom dragon was also scanning the crowd. They'd settled themselves down a little further away from the main crowd of humans, and where the most dragons wouldn't be situated.

"I know," Rhyhor replied, sparing a single moment to glance at the dark male. Ryuu's patterns were more eye-catching than his own, onyx scales with speckles of pale colors that looks like stars, with a crown of horns larger than his own.

Altercations at the choosing ceremonies weren't unheard of, not by far, and, if the need arose, he would fly in, pluck Henry out of the fray, and settle back away from the other dragons.

He settled back down onto his forelegs, eyes having latched onto Henry.

"I hate when new dragons come in," he muttered, briefly shifting his gaze to scan the area again. "There's always scuffles about the nests and everyone's finicky about space." Ryuu made a huffing noise that was almost a laugh, the closest thing that Rhyhor was sure to get from him.

"We were involved in those scuffles once, don't put yourself too high up on that list," the venom dragon said lowly, tapping one of his many tails against Rhyhor's.

"We were damn good at winning them, too," he said, giving a hint of a smile. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted the first dragon arrival, a crocodilian-like water dragon. He jerked his head slightly in the vague direction.

He watched Ryuu's head swing around a little, not enough to be directly staring at the water dragon, but enough to have them in his vague field of view. He made a low noise in his throat, tip of one of his tails tapping Rhyhor's again.

"You're gonna have fun being the leader of this squad, huh?" Rhyhor said softly.

"Gods above, don't remind me," was the reply.

Tatsuya I.-F. Montcrioux

Dragon Rider | Male | Mentions : His Family [ Directly & Indirectly ] , Other Riders & Dragons

The young man held his gaze lowered as he sat at the table. The silence was deafening, and he silently looked at them. His mother primly sap on her soup and his father grumbled to himself. A soft thumping sound coming as he rapped his fingers against the table. Tatsuya could practically feel their scrutiny where he sat. He just hoped whatever they were going to say would be short and that he wouldn't miss the Welcomimg Ceremony because of it. That's when the sound of the chair scraping against the floor caught his attention and he focused on his mother. Her stare was cold and stoic, her grey eyes holding no emotion or affection for her own child. She daintily clasped her hands together as she faced him to speak.

" Today, you join a school, one that you enrolled in without our permission. And defied us in doing is such. " she said stepping closer, her heels clacking against the tile, " however, this little act of defiance has some use for us. It can bring up our family fame, knowing that our son of following in our legacy." She said with a slight inflection in her voice, a malicious smile gracing her features, " so you do well to make us proud, child. And don't think we will tolerate any more of your slip ups, understood." She said with a cold tone and a even more fitting glare.

" Understood . . . Mother. " Tatsuya replied in a monotone , as he rose to stand. Moving a hand behind his body and straightening his posture. His violet eyes deviod of any emotion and cold. He looked to his father who also stood, and placed his arms behind him. His cape dragging behind him as he moved to stand next to his wife.

" Yes, you are the next legacy of the Montcrioux name, and you better make sure you don't tarnish our reputation. " his father said coldly, and Tatsuya only gave him a nod. And he grabbed his messenger bag, and made his way to the door. There was slight look of sympathy from the staff as he left, he only gave a glare. He didn't need their sympathy.

He gave a short scoff as he left the place of his birth and made his way to the fields. It was quite the walk considering his parents didn't have the decency to get him a carriage to the place of his new start. He noticed that a few students had arrived already and he noted one was Nina Tamborello, not exactly a friend, but neither an enemy. She seems to be looking for the dragons too. He didn't feel like approaching her at the moment.

He looked up to the skies to see if he could spot some dragons and maybe even find his own. He wore a simple poets shirt with a high waisted pants and heeled boots. He moved himself away from the growing crowd and found and unoccupied tree to sit down, and he just observed the rest of the incoming crowd

Desmodus Draculae
Dark Dragon - Male - M: Rhyhor (Ind), Ryuu (Ind), Murkburim (Ind)
~
Desmodus slowly yawned as he landed on the ground, flapping his wings around and standing on his hind legs before he neatly folded them and jammed his two claws on the tips of his wings into the soft ground. Hmph... Let's get this over with so I can sleep... He yawned again and made a small hissing noise and licked one of his fangs with his long tongue before relaxing and standing still.
~
Desmodus then scanned the field, watching a storm dragon and a venom dragon talking to each other. What were their names? Either he forgot who they were, or never met them. He turned to look at the water when he heard a splash and saw a water dragon who was pretty much gnawing on his freshly caught fish, making him feel sick to the stomach, and he quickly turned away, disgusted. Ugh, I want to go to bed. It's too bright. He thought before hissing slightly. It hurt his fur.
~
Desmodus watched the crowd of students, slightly wanting to eat them, eat all of them. He knew he couldn't, but it was so tempting. They all looked like little squirming snacks to him, but he tried to ignore the thought. I'll get used to it eventually... Just resist the urge, Desmodus... He moved his small wing claws around, tapping them on the ground, trying to avoid attention.
~
Desmodus then snapped his attention to a small rabbit hopping across the ground. He quickly snapped his front right wing claws on the rabbit's back and grabbed it by the scruff and lifted it up in the air a bit to examine it closely. He squinted his eyes and watched it flail around in the air. Hmm... He scanned it for a little bit longer before jamming his front fangs into it, hissing aggressively and making small screeches before dropping it on the ground and eating it slowly, smirking, knowing everyone probably saw that. Hehe... Now you will all fear me. You see what happened to that rabbit? Same will happen to you if you ever annoy me. So watch out you squirming snacks! Never look away when you're around me. Beware my fangs. Because if you bother me, you'll be the next to feel them in that fragile little skin of yours... Hehe..

Juniper | Demi-boy (he/they) | 17 | Rider

M: Henry (Dir), Rhyhor, Dragons, + Riders (Ind)

“Breathe.”

“I’m breathing.”

“Are you sure?”

“I am breathing!”

“Are you absolutely sure,” Henry said with a chuckle as he poked Juniper in the cheek, “because from here, it looks like your whole face is going blue from not breathing.”

Juniper waved Henry’s hand off with a small huff, only causing his older brother to chuckle more. This was Juniper’s first time out of the Valley he had been raised and he was one of the lucky few who was given a chance to meet a dragon to bond with. As Juniper’s cape swished behind him, the very idea of not only having a friend but a dragon sent him into excited chills. Juniper ran the idea through their brain over and over like a candy maker pulling on taffy again and again to make it perfect. It was such a sweet idea too. Even with the possibility of not actually receiving a dragon ever present and looming over his head like with what happened with his older sister, Falla, Juniper was hopeful, no, certain, that he would make a bond with a dragon today just like his older brother and mother who both had incredible dragon companions. Juniper still wondered how his older brother dealt with leaving the Valley for the first time. Juniper had been shaking almost every step of their journey to the Choosing Ceremony, analyzing the buildings that looked so much different, smaller, and more busy compared to his own while Henry looked relaxed— perhaps even comfortable— with the chaos of the outside world as he held his guitar case over his shoulder with the calm, care-free attitude he seemed to always have. Though they supposed that the chaos of the city was not all that different from the busyness of life in the Valley, Juniper could only imagine how his brother must have been so much more confident than Juniper on his first outing in the real world.

Everything out of the Valley was so new and overwhelming that Juniper felt dizzy with excitement.

“You’re forgetting to breathe again,” Henry noted with a sigh, flicking the side of Juniper’s head and startling them.

“Sorry, I just—” Juniper began using hand motions to attempt to explain his excitement, rolling from the front of his feet to the back of his feet as a giddy smile only grew on his face. Juniper glanced excitedly at the town as kids ran by laughter and strange toys, people wore clothes entirely different to their own, and the smells of something foul but unique and new had consumed their senses with a beaming smile before flicking their eyes back to Henry as their hands began to flick and shake as their happy stimming. “You know??”

Henry nodded slowly, doing his best to translate Juniper’s non-verbal communication before chuckling faintly. “If you’re trying to say what I think you’re trying to say, yeah, it’s pretty damn exciting. Finding your dragon is pretty nerve wracking and comes with its challenges of figuring out someone who is a lot more complex than either of us are probably used to.” Henry thought for a moment, trying to choose his words wisely to best express his point. “But if you can work with traumatized foxes, help violent kittens, and deal with Keddan and his stupid fucking—”

“Language.”

“Right, sorry,” Henry mumbled softly with a huff before continuing. “And you can deal with Keddan’s stupid freakin’ pranks, you can befriend your dragon.” Henry smiled fondly. “I mean, you know Rhy. I think he used to hate me!!” Henry sighed, shifting his grip on his guitar as he looked up at the sky with his happy smile as if Rhy was flying somewhere above him. Juniper instinctively looked up as well even though they knew nothing was up there. “It takes time to get to know your dragon, but it is all worth it because you get to have a companion for the rest of your life. Even if you don’t bond with a dragon, I am sure Rhy wouldn’t mind giving you a ride around once in a while.” Henry paused before looking back at Juniper and gently clapping them on the back (though Henry’s definition of ‘gently’ is much different compared to most people’s). “But whatever happens today, you’re going to have so much fun regardless, I promise!”

“Thanks, Henry,” Juniper mumbled softly, looking up at him with a warm smile as Henry placed a hand on Juniper’s shoulder.

“O’ ‘course, Juni,” Henry mumbled before sighing dramatically as he leaned his whole weight into Juniper, nearly crushing them as they were caught off guard by the sudden weight. “And to think my little sibling—” Juniper beamed as the word ‘sibling’ was used— “is one step closer to partyin’ it up in Dragon Academy of Ederia like it’s the Bright Ages, causing havoc by accidentally setting fire to the hall, and scoring on chicks— or dudes or whoever— to getting dirty in the sheets with.”

Juniper stared blankly at Henry as he said the last part of his statement before chuckling softly as he shoved Henry off of themself and continued walking. “Henry, I am not a little kid. I’m not gonna wet the bed or anything.”

“Juni— oh you poor sweet thing,” Henry spoke after a moment though he himself was not constantly oblivious to things like that. “I did not mean ‘dirty the bed’ in that sense.”

Juniper narrowed his eyes at his older brother in confusion.

Henry stopped in his tracks and set his guitar case down and began to shimmy his shoulders as if that motion would help him understand before trying to think of a term his sibling might know it as. “Getting it on?”

“What?”

Henry began to move his hips, doing an odd dance that could be best summed up as someone who watched exotic or erotic dancing through a kaleidoscope and tried to imitate it. A few passing women and men began to stare, looking over Henry like he was pure eye candy to them. “Like— getting jiggy with it??”

“Henry, people are staring…!” Juniper whined trying to hide his face from the crowd of people around them, some of whom reached to pull out their wallets, so he would not be associated with that man whose name Juniper was unwilling to even say. “What are you even saying??”

Groaning in frustration, Henry finally stopped his dance thing— Juniper thanking the gods that his torture was over. “How do you not know what I am talking about??”

“Oh, I don’t know,” Juniper replied with a wide smile before throwing his arms up dramatically, “but maybe it’s because you’re using words like ‘getting jiggy with it’? Maybe that’s why I’m not understanding it, Henry!”

“Well, fine,” Henry replied with a huff, folding his arms as he shook his head at Juniper, “let me make it simpler for you: when two people— or more if you’re into that, again I don’t judge— love each other very much—”

“You were talking about sex? This whole time you were—” Juniper cut themself off as they were flooded with embarrassment as they drew in a shaky breath. Pulling back his fist, winding up his punch, and releasing it into Henry’s arm, even the wall that was Henry was forced to stumble back with a loud ‘ow!’ from the force of Juniper’s punch. “That’s for being a weirdo in front of so many people!!” Juniper quickly turned away from Henry defiantly, wanting to shrivel up and disappear as he began grumbling. “I think I would have preferred if Pa took me to the Choosing Ceremony…”

“Oh, come on…!” Henry mumbled with a whine, his expression looking like that of a wounded puppy dog as he walked— stumbled— closer to Juniper as overdramatically as possible to gain pity. “I’m not that bad am I?”

Yes, yes, you are!” Juniper hissed, still not willing to look at Henry after his previous prediction about what Juniper might do while at the Academy. “And don’t come any closer or I will kick your shins in, you unsalted meat slab!!”

“Can I at least hug my wittle itty bitty sibwing goodbye before their big ceremony?~” Henry mumbled with a pout as he jutted out his lip to look more sad.

Although Juniper hated the tone of which he used those words, Juniper was still happy to be called ‘sibling’ and, with a sigh of defeat, caved in to his older brother’s request and awkwardly opened their arms for Henry. Henry laughed happily, practically barreling into Juniper before picking them up and swinging them around like a little girl would with a doll. Pretty soon enough, Juniper was giggling like a maniac from the hug as Henry’s hearty chuckles felt incredibly contagious, not caring if people were still watching anymore. When Henry finally set Juniper down who adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, Juniper was given no break from the brotherly-love as his hair was ruffled until it looked like a bird’s nest.

“Go crush it out there today, alright?” Henry instructed with a warm smile. “And don’t forget that it is just like greeting a new member of the family. And don’t forget that no matter what happens everyone loves you back at home. And don’t—”

“And don’t forget to breathe?” Juniper interrupted with a sigh, having heard all the same things millions of times before.

“No,” Henry smiled as he shook his head. “Don’t forget to have fun.”

Henry picked up the guitar case he had set down on the ground and heaved it over his shoulder as Juniper looked down at their feet. Clicking their boots together, they spent a moment just to process the words. Have fun. Yeah, this was supposed to be fun. Juniper smiled to themself before nodding. They could do this.

As Juniper looked up, Henry was already walking again and Juniper trotted a few steps to catch up with a beaming smile brighter than the gold family crest etched into the back of his green cape, the same crest written into the bandanna Henry wore around his bulky biceps, and the same one that belonged to the Grenleff family.

“Alright, I gotta go check if your squad leader is here yet so I can talk to him about ‘official business meeting stuff—’” Juniper could not help but roll his eyes even as Henry used major air quotes— “while you stay here and wait for what your orders are, okay? Just shout if you need anything and good luck.”

“Alright, alright! For the millionth time, I’ll be okay! Just go find your buddy and I will try to make a new one!” Juniper giggled, visibly shaking from excitement as Juniper had to hold onto their clothes to stop themself from stimming so much.

“You’ll do great!!”

“I know!”

The two of them had exited town a while ago and had traveled into a valley, one not too dissimilar from the one from the valley Juniper grew up in though it was much smaller and filled with trees and brush. It was a pain to get to the center of the valley where the Choosing would begin but, by the gods, the center was beautiful: an open field with long grass that tickled Juniper’s hands as he ran them over the gentle blades. The long, tan grass grew shorter and greener the closer to the center one walked and the field smelled sweet in a way, as if honey had been drizzled over the ground. As Juniper stared down at the ground to find flowers that were entirely new to him poking between the grass, large, ominous shadows flew overhead, blocking out the sun entirely as they swarmed above.

Dragons.

So many other humans had already arrived and Juniper was just another one who had appeared. Juniper stood a bit farther away from the other humans but did their best to be as friendly as possible and wave to any who looked their way, looking up at the sky nervously and excitedly every time a dragon flew overhead.
