you can make your older wolves 'elder' rank. that will disqualify them from being either alpha or beta, even if they have more dominance.
it's reversible if you decide to change your mind, too.

Any tips on the best way to move wolves around via dominance? I have a wolf waay down in my list, but intend on him being my beta. Not sure how to accomplish that without applying dominance that will ultimately just get taken away when I stagger my dominance.

I like having more but like Bobcat said I'm not grinding them.
Only sometimes there's exceptions to that, for example the PvP trophies (Power Rank and Top This Week), I absolutely must have those >.>
