thank you for the tip! I have them on level 2 atm but I may try replaying level 1. I forget to pay attention to their level since it's so subtle when battling that I usually click through without noticing!

I've noticed that too! I've been trying the pusue option for other npcs and noticed the dialogue stating they decided to do their own thing. So, I have two stubborn alphas I believe, unfortunately DX

Something that I've found super helpful with NPCs is having at least one or two wolves that are obedient or agreeable. Then you can use the 'pursue' option and it lessens the chance of the NPC getting away.

I would try and level up your wolves on lower floors before defeating the event ones (that's what I'm doing right now, as a matter of fact!)

it works, it just takes a bit to kick in
i just stayed up late hanging out with my fiancee is all
she falls asleep in a couple minutes but it sometimes takes me all night to get properly to sleep lol
