Thought I'd share my drawing process, because why not. :') both images are mine. I don't really put much thought into the base of my sketches... does anyone use, like, three different layers for the sketch? :') I have the skeleton or structure of my sketch, which I don't really focus on, and then the actual sketch itself, which I spend way too much time on lol. 
Anyway, this is Ciúin, as a pup, and his family.
