Name:

Talon [T for short]

Age:

2.5 Years

Sex:

Buck

Herd:

The Bowtongue Herd

Thoughts on the Migration:

He recognizes the immense strain the migration will place upon the herd. From the eldest members to the smallest fawns, the journey promises to be long, exhausting, and fraught with danger. His hesitation does not stem from fear for himself, but from concern for those who may struggle to endure the distance or maintain the pace.

Though he quietly questions the necessity of such a grueling passage, he does not challenge the will of the Sovereigns. If migration is demanded, then he will see it through—remaining vigilant, steady, and unyielding in his duty to ensure that as many of the herd as possible reach their destination alive.

Thoughts on the Hunters:

Ballsy. Far too ballsy.

Their early arrival has not gone unnoticed, nor has the confidence with which they press into Bowtongue territory. Their greed and disregard for balance stir a deep, instinctive disgust within him. He understands predators—death is part of the world—but the hunters do not hunt as beasts do.

If they were to meet without their thunderous pipes of metal and wood, he would gladly remind them that antlers and hooves were not given without reason. They may see him as prey, but prey does not mean helpless.

Current Rank:

Sentinel

Desired Rank:

Already holds it.

Appearance:

A young red deer buck of lean, athletic build, his long legs and deep chest built for endurance rather than brute strength. His silhouette is unmistakably cervine, with a strong neck and narrow waist.

His coat is unusually dark for a red deer—so deep a mahogany brown, it often appears nearly black beneath forest shade or overcast skies. In direct sunlight, however, his true coloring emerges: rich auburn and burnished bronze tones flaring along his shoulders, spine, and flanks like fire caught beneath fur. The effect is most striking in motion, when light glances off his guard hairs and briefly ignites his pelt before it settles back into shadow.

Lighter, more typical red deer coloring softens his muzzle, throat, and inner legs, while a pale rump patch and short tail provide stark contrast against his darker body. Seasonal shedding alters his appearance further—his summer coat sleek and glowing with warmth, his winter coat thicker, darker, and more subdued.

His antlers are well-developed for his age, rising cleanly from his crown with strong beams and the early suggestion of a forming coronet. Though not yet at their full span, they carry the promise of impressive growth. His eyes are dark and alert, ears constantly turning, betraying a sentinel’s awareness even in moments of rest.

His pelt is so dark it often appears black beneath the forest canopy, swallowing light until he seems more shadow than stag, with the colouring even extending to the base of his antlers, before fading into a paler colour towards the tips.

Personality:

Despite the importance of his role, he is not a grim or distant presence. When the herd is at ease, he allows himself moments of lightheartedness—small displays of play and gentle mischief that ease tension among those around him. He engages fawns in brief, harmless chases, lowers his head so they may clumsily butt at his antlers, and tolerates their antics with a patience that borders on fondness.

His humor is simple and physical: exaggerated hops, playful snorts, feigned retreats meant to invite laughter and movement. Among the elders, his kindness takes a quieter form. He lingers beside those who struggle, helps uncover forage by pawing aside leaves or snow, and willingly yields better grazing in favor of rougher ground.

This easygoing demeanor vanishes the instant something feels wrong.

A snapped twig. An unfamiliar scent. A shift in the wind.

In those moments, it is as though a switch is thrown. His posture stiffens, play falls away, and his focus sharpens entirely outward. There is no hesitation or levity left—only the cold clarity of instinct and duty. The herd has learned to read this change as a warning in itself: when his play ceases, danger is near.

Protective not by choice but by nature, he places himself instinctively between threat and herd, favoring deterrence over conflict but capable of force when escape is no longer an option.

He's a very gentle-spoken individual, his voice never raising above a soft and tender tone unless urgency grips cold and hard. His gaze remains warm when he speaks to others, and he is more than happy to slow his youthful pace to match others. Whether its repeating himself until words are registered, or offering to do additional tasks to help the herd survive, he always does it bearing a prideful smile.

He finds his worth comes from what he can achieve, and if he fails to be of any use, it will often leave him in an almost sulky manner where he questions if he is doing good enough or not.

Frequently positions himself at the rear or flanks during travel, adjusting his pace to match the weakest members of the herd. Known for his reliability, attentiveness, and the sharp contrast between his playful calm and sudden, unmistakable seriousness.

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Name: Paprika ["Rika"]
Age: 3 and a half
Sex: Doe
Herd: Bowtongue
Thoughts on the Migration: Rika feels very uneasy about the migration, to put it lightly. She hasn't always been with the Bowtongue herd--about a year ago, she was still with her old herd, and with her family--but a catastrophic storm during their migration left her separated and unable to reach them, with her loved ones likely assuming her to be dead. Truth be told, she never quite belonged with them to begin with and likely would have hesitated to come home if she could, even if she wishes things hadn't happened that way. Her parents, though not outright neglectful or cruel, didn't quite seem to know how to raise a fawn, and when her mother had two more after Paprika, both stillborns--well, maybe it wasn't really any surprise at all if her parents struggled to be particularly nurturing. The impending migration definitely leaves her conflicted; does she really belong here any more than with her old herd?
Thoughts on the Hunters: She doesn't like them, of course, but definitely lacks the kind of emotional baggage a deer would carry around had they lost family to hunters. Rika's never really known anyone who'd be thought of as worth all that effort to hunt--no one especially large or with impressive enough antlers--and so she views them as just a nebulous sort of enemy. In some ways, she feels more uncomfortable with other deer or even with bad weather that stirs up bad memories for her--at least, she might think, it's predictable that hunters will always be after them, but the potential indifference of her new herd...that's an unknown she doesn't know how to cope with.
Current Rank: Doe
Desired Rank: Sentinel, maybe--but she doesn't really trust herself enough for it; doesn't trust that she cares as much for the others as she should, and worries she's too hypervigilant. However, she's also somewhat uncomfortable with her current rank, or, more specifically, her current state. She'd gotten pregnant by a buck from her old herd, but never felt more than a kind of perfunctory, expected affection for him. Worse still, she doesn't know how to feel about her fawn, given it would be a reminder of a home she feels unable and unwilling to return to, and she fears passing down the same emotional distance she learned from her kin.
Appearance: Paprika definitely looks like she's seen some things she wishes she hadn't. The doe is very red in color as her name suggests, with a long cream-colored stripe up the inside of her throat and that same color along her stomach, muzzle, and legs. One of her ears is noticeably shorter than the other and flops over slightly, owing to an old injury where it was torn and never quite healed correctly. Her eyes are almost a similar color to her pelt, and never stay in the same place for too long, her jumpy, anxious nature on full display--for all Rika worries the herd only keeps her around out of obligation (and moreso a perceived obligation to her unborn fawn than Rika herself, potentially), she's nevertheless very cautious of being left behind. She's lankier than one might expect from a pregnant doe; granted, she's still a good handful of weeks away, and has always been relatively slight.
Personality: Rika is anxious to a fault, enough so that even she herself doesn't believe she can be trusted with much, let alone a fawn, and the thought of her impending motherhood makes her feel incredibly conflicted. She doesn't really know what genuine care looks like, only that whatever attention she had gotten from her previous herd, her parents, and even her ex-mate, doesn't seem to be love. Still, she often doubts her own perception. Paprika tries, without much success, to ingratiate herself to her peers, but she's incredibly awkward and will often inject her typical wry humor where it doesn't belong. Even if she takes something incredibly seriously, she has a great deal of difficulty not joking about or downplaying it to cope, and loathes to be vulnerable, even if in secret she harbors a fear of abandonment, and likely wishes she felt secure enough to be vulnerable. Whenever she sees that quality in someone else, she can't help but to feel a little resentment.
Crush / Interest: none yet
Mate: presumed dead, but she isn't sure, considering others also think she's deceased.
Fawns: not yet
Kin: estranged
Other: uhhhh hard question lol. probably the cat from coraline :0
holy long post sorry
