┌─────── ⟣⋆・⟡・⋆⟢ ───────┐ When Darkness Falls └─────── ⟣⋆・⟡・⋆⟢ ───────┘ Welcome to the roleplay thread for When Darkness Falls, a dragon and rider roleplay. This is a semi-literate/literate roleplay.
┌───── ⟣⋆・⟡・⋆⟢ ─────┐ Setting └───── ⟣⋆・⟡・⋆⟢ ─────┘ Map hand drawn by me We open on the day of the Bonding Ceremony. This day happens once every 5 years, and every young person who's never bonded with a dragon looks forward to it. The younger dragons often look forward to it as well. The dragons who have bonded before sometimes dread it, as losing a bonded partner is painful for them, and they hate to go through it again. The weather is peaceful and beautiful: sunny clear skies, warm but not horrifically warm or humid. A comfortable temperature. A gentle breeze occasionally stirs the trees that surround the clearing where the ceremony takes place. On the map above, you can see where the ceremony takes place, marked by a red X. Humans and elves must cross the river in boats to reach this sacred place. They travel from their homes (the yellow squares), and will wait for the ceremony to begin. During this ceremony, dragons gather around the clearing, waiting for the person they choose to be their partner. This bonding can sometimes be painful, but is usually a rather joyous and peaceful experience as their minds merge into one. Remember, the bond will begin quite weak and will gradually grow stronger over time. Humans and elves that do not have a bonded partner will line up in a straight horrizontal line to wait for the dragons. Those already bonded may watch from the crowd, but may not interfere with the Ceremony (unless absolutely necessary). Dragons will make the first move, deciding from the lined up humans and elves, if they see one that they believe is a fit match. Edited at September 10, 2023 12:50 PM by Shenzu

Avika : Elf : Queen : Female Mentions: All (Ind.)
Being the Queen of the elves, Avika had arrived to the ceremony early. She wanted to be sure that everything went smoothly, nobody got eaten or set on fire... though that hadn't happened in many years, thankfully. She still wanted to be sure that things went smooth. She was not expecting to be bonded with a dragon, she was quite content with her role as it was. Though she still hoped, every time this Ceremony occurred, she couldn't help hoping she might be chosen by one of the many dragons that showed up for the ceremonies. Avika paused at the edges of the trees, looking around with her sharp green eyes. She was wearing her formal attire, as was appropriate for any type of ceremony. Her long sleeves nearly brushed the ground, but didn't quite reach the grass. She folded her hands in front of her at her waist as she surveyed the number of humans and elves, as well as the number of dragons that were slowly arriving.

Navi : Dragon : Trainee : Female Mentions: All (Ind.)
Navi was one of the first dragons to have arrived. Being a younger age than many of her other dragon kin, she was excited for this Ceremony. She had never experienced a bond before, and she was thrilled. The young female could sense her destined partner was somewhere close by, but she could not see them yet. Still, she could wait. Navi padded over to a tall tree. Digging her claws in, she began to climb the large tree trunk, her claws splintering the bark as she dug them in. Reaching a large, sturdy branch, Navi stopped, curling herself gracefully on the branch. She was attempting to act cool and relaxed, but her tail, which hung down from the branch, the tip was flicking slightly, betraying her excitement. Edited at September 10, 2023 11:49 AM by Shenzu

Junover | Elf | Trainee | Male Mentions: All (Indirect) Junover was tense with anticipation. He hadn't gotten any rest the previous night out of excitement, yet somehow he was jittery with energy all the way through his boat ride up the river. Juno practically shot out of his seat as soon as his and other boats neared the bank of the river, leaving one other tired human (or elf, he hadn't bothered to check) to deal with pulling it onto the sand. Before he could be scolded he dashed into the trees impudently, then slowed to an anxious fast-walk alongside many other eager arrivals. Upon reaching the clearing he stopped and awkwardly stood for a minute before jogging over to the start of a line for the unbonded. His parents hadn't been able to come, as one was sickly, so he was by himself in this large crowd. Admittedly, he was a little frightened, but mostly in awe at the crowd of people and dragons watching from above in trees.

Kaisen : Human : Warrior : Male Dragon: Nyx M: Nyx (dir.) and Junover (ind.)
Kaisen stood beside his dragon, arms crossed. His face was set in his pretty usual frown, his dark eyes surveying the humans, elves, and dragons as they arrived. He was honestly glad he didn't have to be part of the Ceremony, though since he'd been already chosen, that meant he was responsible for keeping an eye on everyone and making sure nobody got hurt. Or, more specifically, set on fire or eaten. He was wearing his armor, as he often was, though he was only wearing his chest plate and bracers today. His helmet was in one of Nyx's saddle bags, strapped to the black dragoness. Noticing Avika, he nodded respectfully to her. The elven Queen would always have his respect. She had taken in the humans after their King was corrupted. She hadn't needed to, but she had. She'd welcomed them with open arms. His respectful gaze turned to one of slight disdain as he noticed a young elf come racing into the clearing. He could tell this was one of the trainees, based on the elf's air of excitement. He rolled his eyes, though he knew he had been like that at his previous Ceremony, when Nyx had chosen him. Edited at September 10, 2023 12:50 PM by Shenzu

Asteria | Human | Warrior / Female Mentions: All (Indirect), Avika, Junover Asteria had arrived early alongside the Queen, however, now that more people and dragons were flooding into the clearing and trees just outside, she was standing in a stub of a line for the unbonded. Hopefully this year would be the one a dragon bonded with her and she'd be able to stand with the other warriors and supervise instead of being in this line- not to mention, she'd have to wait ten years for the next ceremony, and humans already didn't have all that many opportunities to get a bond. Although her location was different she still made sure to stay attentive to her surroundings, just so that if anything happened she could act immediately. Asteria had gone through a ceremony ten years prior, and while she was dismayed that she didn't get a bond, she was still grateful for the stability of her life. Asteria's mind wandered briefly to wonder why she didn't mind having such a dull life, but quickly went back to being alert as a short and energetic elf scurried beside her in line. He (were they a he?) seemed barely able to keep himself together. Edited at September 11, 2023 05:10 PM by Qyusen

Autumn : Elf : Trainee : Female : Extremely nervous! Mentions: All (Ind) Autumn stood roughly in the center of the line of humaniod figures, the only movement in her entire body besides her eyes, the nervous twitches of her right pinky finger any time someone looked at her. She had never seen dragons up close before; only having read about them in books and they were a lot larger than the pictures. They reminded her of the tall oaks that stood at the center of her forest, horns twisting towards the sky like the tallest of their branches. " think of them as tree's Autumn, that will make you less nervous. Big, glittering, scaly, terrifyingly beautiful, TREES!" The nervous twitching of her pinky intensified. She had taken several supposedly "calming" breaths as soon as she stepped off her boat and so far they didnt seem to be working.

Vervada Int. Open, Navi
Vervada's tail rustled in the underbrush as she scowled at the bedraggled line of unbonded beginning to form. As far as she could see there were plenty of humans, but not so many dragons. "Go ahead, you foolish creatures, give your heart and soul to these humans and have them torn out of you in a few years" she muttered, venom in her tone. She was laying in the darkest corner of the clearing she could find, still within sight of the trainees and others, but not directly with them. Her wings folded over he back, strong, sharp claws stretched out in front of her in a deceivingly relaxed position. But she was not relaxed. Every muscle in her body was tense with memory, and even though no one had spoke to her yet she was already feeling very short tempered. But really, with her past, who could blame her?
Her fiery violet gaze swept over the gathering, recognizing an older dragon and rider, and the queen of course, indifferently. Her scarred scowl deepened as she watched a rather young dragon clamber it's way up into a tree, lying on a branch, most likely attempting to look like it knew what it was doing. But it's tail was twitching most erratically, giving away it's extreme excitement. She scoffed, her lip curling. Excitement. What irony. Excitement for your fate of pain and loneliness. "Have fun with it while it lasts" she growled sarcastically under her breath.

Kiran | Elf | General | Male Mentions: All (ind), Queen Avika, Neryth General Kiran stood off to the side, hands loosely grasping his weapons as he waited for the ceremony to begin. His eyes tracked Queen Avika, scanning her surroundings every few seconds. Although it would be foolish for an enemy to attack the queen when the dragons were inbound, he would take no risks. He was slightly more relaxed with Neryth so close. Her presence guaranteed safety, as even the dragons deferred to her lead. Life was always easier when there was a bossy, fire-breathing reptile nearby. Below, the trainees shuffled nervously, and he felt his lip quirk upward. They were always scared; the dragons, however, were near vibrating with anticipation. He allowed himself a full smile at the memory of Neryth describing her first bonding. Bonding was no longer an eventful task for Kiran - he watched the Queen, who also had her second at her side, and he made sure nobody tried to kill her. The rest was a dull blur, no more exciting than a stack of paperwork unless something truly thrilling happened between a newly bonded pair. It was always interesting to see how nature decided the bonds should be formed; many dragons and riders formed a close connection, but some simply seemed to despire their match regardless of the outcome. That usually resulted in a struggle for his training forces. It was never easy to train a rider when the dragon attempted to throw them off out of spite.
