You can use it while exploring.

It will show you a map of where you are, and where the enemies, and or unexplored tiles are approximately.

sometimes that happens. The good news is that you can fix that.

The bad news is that you need to start over. That happened to me before and so I started over. And then after that, it worked. Soooo yeah. Sorry bout that.
