Plot:
Skagway, Alaska, was widely known for its bad weather: tornadoes in Spring, heavy rainfall during Autumn, and, most of all, treacherous blizzards and snowstorms in winter. Weather reports had noted very mild snowfall during the weeks of training and racing for the dog sledding teams of the city... they hadn't expected it to be just the opposite of mild. The annual Sledding Tournaments had just started to kick off- the different teams preparing to set off one early morning in January. The weather had been sunny and cool enough to see your own breath clearly, a perfect day to start the competition if the judges did say so themselves.
The three teams had set out not long after arriving, and everything was going perfectly as planned. The run-ins with wildlife and cool bodies of water had been few, and most of the teams were even close to their first checkpoint.
Then came the storm.
Blizzards were a sledding team's worst nightmare, coming with many major setbacks of both time and safety. The wind and snow had begun to whip against the dogs' faces, the snowfall muting their surroundings and their bodies straining to push against the wind currents that came rapidly their way. One team in particular really did seem to have the worst end of things... the most unfavorable event taking place nearly a minute after the blizzard had picked up its pace. The wind was knocked out of the few dogs in front as they made contact with a large boulder-like object. The sled came soon after at the sudden stop and it was too late to notice the cliff behind them before the sled itself toppled and fell into the ravine below, dragging both the musher and a few wheelers with it.
Now, recovering from this event, the pack of sledding dogs must face the harsh Alaskan wilderness. Will they be able to find their way to what should be a nearby checkpoint, without the help of their musher? Or will they fall to the silent and deadly cold?

Role Descriptions:
Lead Dogs
These two canines really set the outcome for the entire race, they lead and push the pack to keep going, making sure that the commands of their musher are met properly. This pair is positioned first in the line, resulting in the need to be both swift and sturdy-footed. These leaders set and maintain high standards to ensure the team's best performance, and they usually adjust along the way to keep things running smoothly. Leaders must be willing to be out front when it comes to change, especially in times of rapid revision.
.
Point Dogs
This pair is positioned right behind the lead dogs in line formation. They help steer and maneuver the team around corners and obstacles. The point dogs pull the team in a sort of arc that keeps the other dogs on the right trail and brings the sled and musher safely around the corner they are avoiding.
.
Team Dogs
The bulk of the team, the team's core. They are the dogs that actually pull the sled and maintain the team's speed and pace. The number of individuals varies from team to team, but typically, there can be 4-10 dogs accounted for.
.
Wheel Dogs
These are the two dogs closest to the sled and the musher. They aren't necessarily the largest dogs and are more commonly the most agile, often required to cross over the main line while headed around corners and then returning to their original position.

Setting:
The team has just witnessed the downfall- literally- of their musher, as well as two of the team dogs who were resting along in the sled at the time. The team of canines is in absolute shock about their current situation, stranded in the Alaskan wilderness, with dense forests surrounding the edge of the cliff, in which they have slowly started backing away. Some individuals are sure to be panicking, stunned, and grieving for their lost members. However, one thing is certain to everyone on the team. They need to survive. But just how will they do that? What is the next step to take? Their survival is in their own paws.
-
Weather/Environment:
*this will change throughout the roleplay, so be sure to check back here!*
.
Weather + TOD ↧
Time of Day: Early Afternoon
Temp: -5 Degrees Fahrenheit
Wind: 78 mph
Chance of Snow: 100%, Blizzarding + Around 1.5 or so feet of snow on the ground
Air Quality: Dense Snowfall, Very Dimly Lit
.
Enviroment ↧
The team has moved a mile or two into the dense pine forest, away from the cliffs where their musher's demise occurred. The trail itself that the team had been running on not hours ago has been covered by the blizzard's snow, and they are therefore wandering for shelter of some sort. There aren't particularly a lot of creatures out, most hiding for shelter, but a few squirrels and birds dart away as the group heads slowly deeper into the forest.

" Sometimes life is altered
Break from the ropes, your hands are tied. "
- And All Things Will End

࿐ ࿔*:・゚

Vireya

Frozen.

For but a moment in time, all was still. So much chaos, so much panic
warped into one singular moment. A storm of swirling chaos that
enveloped the team's very core, whirling them around viciously against
the constraints of their harnesses. The whiplash of the force had been
enough to tear through the leather, the sound gnarly as it shredded
against the force of the wind. Vireya had been spun, whirled, and barely
remained on her feet by the time the spinning stoppedd.

And then, there she was, frozen.

Each breath she inhaled was sharp and cold, eyes wide as she processed
the world, regaining her focus on the sight before her. Her paws, only
inches away from the cliffs edge, held her firmly in place. One misstep,
and she'd join her musher and teammates, trumbling into the frozen
earth below. It was with this realization that Vireya would begin to feel
again, her heartbeat thundering in her ears. Loud. Warlike. Those amber eyes
of hers suddenly narrowed as she lifted one hind leg, shuffling backwards to
avoid mistaking her balance. She'd not disappear. Not like that.

Another step, and another. Until she was safely a few feet away from the
edge, and when she was sure, she dug her claws into the sweet, sweet
precious ground, no longer able to see into the gaping pit before her through
the thickness of the blizzard. No longer was she frozen. And with that, Vireya
was able to raise her head, gazing over her shoulder with a narrowed gaze,
cutting through the blinding ivory to try and make out the rest of her team.
She was by no means their leader, far from it, in fact, but worry
did settle upon her tongue.

"Who made it?"

It was a simple question, but loaded. She took a few careful steps backwards,
this time projecting her intent.

"Move slowly. Disturb the snow, and the rest of us will fall forward."

Nikolai - M - Alaskan Husky - Mention(s): Open (ind: Vireya)

(Damn the forum got stretched again e.e)

~

Shit.

There really wasn't another way to describe the predicament as Nikolai watched, understanding yet failing to wrap his brain around the fact that the sled had just went right over the edge of the cliff, complete with mushers, food, and two of the team dogs a couple of seconds ago.

It had even done a little flip in the air before it vanished out of sight in the blizzard. Morbid curiosity aside, Nikolai didn't really want to know what it was now. He normally was a happy, curious little dog that felt younger than he actually was, but this was so clearly not the time for it. Nor did he feel it at all.

Nikolai blinked once, before shaking his muzzle to clear the snow from collecting on it. It did little to help.

One blink. Another. This wasn'r going away like some of his dreams - it was real, it was right in front of him. Well, not really in front of him anymore - it was at the bottom of the cliff-face, wherever the hell that was.

His brain was officially frozen.

Blink. Somewhere through the fog, both in his brain and literally in front of him, he heard Vireya say something about... moving back from the cliff. That sounded like a pretty good idea. Right now though? His legs weren't really working at the moment.

Another blink. If this was a dream, it wasn't disappearing anytime soon. Even though he knew - this was real life. There wasn't escaping real life, no matter what it threw at you. You had to accept it and move on, but right now Nikolai was still stuck far too close to the drop.

Blink. He couldn't even see if anyone else had fallen with the limited visibility the blizzard gave. Who else had fallen? Had anyone else fallen?

I don't want to fall either.

The thought broke Nikolai's frozen mind as he processed fully what had happened. The sled had flipped over the edge. They were likely dead, all possibilities considered. There wasn't really anything he could do about it.

Nikolai's slight pause might have been missed by most, but he would certainly remember it. Ever so slowly, he began edging away from the cliff, much like Vireya did moments ago.

He didn't want to die. Edging away from the cliff-face was a good, solid start to that goal, wasn't it? Despite all, Nikolai's thoughts couldn't help but find that brief moment of levity. Edging away from an almost-certain death from a sheer cliff was definiely a good, solid start to the goal of not dying. Wow, what a great start!

But now what? Nikolai peered through the blizzard, trying and failing to make out the rest of his teammates. What now?

Nikolai couldn't find any levity in that.

Sterling

Male | 6 y/o | Team Dog | Mentions: Entire team (indir)

Sterling would not admit that his faith had been tested. Moments ago, the demise of their beloved musher and two other team dogs were swept away into the depths of the storm, seemingly frozen. Sterling squinted hard, his eyes struggling to focus as the wind whipped and blew, patches of snow cultivating in his matted fur. This was a defining moment, and he felt as though he had just beat the odds.

As for what happened moments before, his first thought was who else survived. He had only seen the two other team dogs drift away in time, and nobody else, but the wind did not allow for a crisp scent to whiff through his nose. He hummed and groaned, managing the strength to rise to all fours. His hind withers ached more than usual, so he favored his front feet more. The feeling was almost numbing, though he was built for the cold, the weather must've had a part in his tingling body.

Sterling managed to find a few faint tracks, though they were quickly covered by the building snow that rapidly fell from the gloomy sky. It was practically impossible to see anything, let alone anyone else. Sterling finally called out, "Hello! Anyone?" he inquired as loud as he could. His tone was hoarse and gruff, his voice seemingly unused. His throat was dry and his ears hurt from the cold winds.

Sterling lowered his head, his sensitive ears perked forwards in hopes of catching the distant sound of any living creature - dog or not. His eyes struggled to remain wide and alert. He huffed and puffed, groaning and limping through the frozen lands.

The idea of himself meeting his end here finally crossed his mind. He shook his broad head, not wishing to accept such a fate. He breathed harder, fighting for crisp air that only took his breath away more. The wind fought against him, making him almost lean into it to walk. Hopefully he would find someone? Or someone would discover him.

Frostbite | M | Point Dog | Mentions: Sterling
-
The world rushed past him at a blurring sight. His claws scratch on the ground as his slid on the slick ground. His harness stretched painfully along his back until he heard a snap. He dug his claws into the groundand slowed to a stop.
He lay, crouched low to the ground, not daring to move. He was breathing deep but his mind was numb, still trying to process what had just happend. He looked over to his right and noticed the ground wasnt there. The cliff was right there below him. The sled had already fallen and was out of view.
He yelped and quickly shot up to his feet, scrambling to his left. The snow limited not only his sight, but his movements too. He stumbled a little from the dizziness and crouched back down. He lay there for a couple seconds to clear his mind and to think. He couldnt remember why the sled had slipped off course but as a point dog he felt he should have been able to avoid it.
Huffing slightly, he stands slowly, still shaking. He looks around knowing it wont help. His ears perk as he hears a noise. It sounded like one of the other dogs but he couldnt tell who it was or what they said. He did a short howl just to signal his relative position so hopefully someone could find him.
He turned around to face where the original sound came from. whoever it was, they were a bit further away, either from seperation from when the harnesses snapped or from running from the cliff. Either way, it was good to know someone else had survived which means others could have too.
The realization that some of his teamates might have fallen down the cliff, dawned on him. He looked back at the cliff. He thought of the musher and the dogs that were on the sled at the time. He suddenly got hit with a pang of sorrow mixed with guilt. Whimpering slightly he forced himself to look back towards where the other dog must be. Better to focus on the things he can change, which, at the moment was not much.
He wanted to try to get a head count and see if the ones who werent on the sled were alright. Maybe the musher had gotten of the sled and possibly taken the other two team members with them. He mostly worried about the wheel dogs, as they were the closest to the sled.
His legs had starting moving without him even noticing. He was walking for a couple seconds back snapped back to reality. He noticed a shape darker than the blizzard around him. He dashed over the snow immediatly, running up to the figure.
He skid to a stop a couple paces before he crashed into the dog. He noticed it was Sterling, one of the team dogs. He yipped, extremely happy to have found another living creature in this snow. His tail wagged at the excitment of finding another who had survived, even though this feeling would be short lived before he remembered the tragic events that had happened.

Atlas

Mentions: Adena and others (ind.)

═══════ ≪ ✦ ≫ ═══════

Atlas's two-colored eyes, which once held boundless excitement and cheekiness that always warmed his musher's heart, darkened at the barely visible sight at the bottom of the cliff. He remained frigid like the Arctic tundra itself: vast, desolate, and utterly still, where even sound felt frozen. Through the denseness of the blizzard, gradually getting buried by the snow, lay the sled that he once pulled and their musher that they grew to love. With each passing second, the figure of the two things he cherished the most was engulfed in a wintry tomb until he could see neither the sled nor his musher anymore.

The heavy snowfall obscured his vision as if shielding him from the sight beneath the cliff. Ironic that the cursed weather that did this to them was the one shielding him from the grizzly sight.

He shook his head, shuffling closer to the edge, looking down at the sight below, straining his eyes. He hoped to spot any form of movement from his musher, that familiar whistle from when he's getting called, or that warm yet scolding voice when he done something wrong. Part of him hoped that it was okay and all of this was a minor accident.

Errors happened previously, and their musher always turned out fine. Just covered in snow with a smile while they dusted themself off. The reassuring headpats and the soothing words before getting back on the sled. His musher was fine in the last few incidents, which means they must be fine now. Right. His tail wagged, yet his usual confidence was lacking. Atlas anxiously bounced on his toes, waiting impatiently for his following commands as his heart pounded in his chest.

A low whine left him without his knowledge as his tail found itself loosening its curled form, hiding between his legs. For once, he felt his body quiver as he anxiously licked his muzzle. No. It wasn't the dropping temperature that got him like this, far from it. The cold never bothered him; it never had. Atlas' coat kept him insulated, warm from winter's harsh embrace. This, however, felt different. The numbing feeling he was experiencing was on the inside, like the environment had invaded his inner body. Atlas didn't know what it was, this strange feeling.

It was like wandering into a dense fog, or blizzard, for that matter, where everything he grew to love was disappearing from his very view. The eerie silence pressed against his chest as the peculiar emotion of sorrow overcame him. His heart and mind were unable to think, the two having a hard time keeping his body from functioning. It was all impossible to grasp, so damn suffocating, with he confusion he's experiencing making him disorientated, as if he was the one falling down the cliffside instead of his beloved musher.

Atlas' mind was a blur, but he could've sworn he remembered what had happened before the fall. He remembered it all vividly. When he looked back at his musher, in a mere brief second, he noticed how their face shifted like they saw something he and the others couldn't. That's when their musher pulled something from their side. Something shiny that caught the light of the lanteren that swished wildly in the rushing, frosty winds. He had seen the tool used many times when he visited the butcher's for a cut of their carcasses. From what he remembered, they came in different sizes, some had long, smooth fangs while others were shorter and serrated.

The humans called them knives. Yes. That's the name. Atlas remembered the strange names the humans came up with for the fangs. He always did find these knives strange - pondering what sort of dog they extracted them from.

However, none of this added up. Why did the sled and their musher the only two things fell off the cliff? Why were they not pulled with them? The ropes couldn't have snapped so effortlessly. No. His beloved musher always checked the ropes for their durability before they sled. No way in Fangs that it could've snapped like that. Does that mean...? Atlas shook his head, not wanting to think about it.

No. No! NO!

He refused to believe that their musher had cut the ropes on purpose. Even if he wanted to deny it, Atlas knew they had always been selfless. Not just towards them but to others, too. Always putting their needs last for others' sake. Now look where it got them!? Foolish. So damn foolish! For once, why couldn't they think selfishly for once in their lives?! Now look where it got them!? At the bottom of a stupid cliff! His musher could've given him and Blithe the order to stop, commanded Orion and Ira to lead the team in a different direction.

Just something besides...

Atlas' gaze remained transfixed on the area where he saw their musher plummet.

He forced him to pull away from the cliff, his strong sense of loyalty and devotion begging him to stay by his master's side. However, the need to be with his proclaimed pack and intelligence told him to find the others. So that's what he did with a heavy heart. With a sad, parting awoo, he pushed through the snow in search of the others. He won't let his master's actions go in vain; he needs to check up on the others and ensure they're alive and well. For his musher's sake.
