And now here's my song lyric thing! Enjoy!

Song: I’ll Be Good by Jaymes Young.

(With some slight adjustments to the lyrics to avoid as much repeating and make it more accurate to characters in certain places)

Characters: Garvin and Aries. Rest of GRAIN and the pirates are mentioned.

Context:

Just Garvin going through a redemption arc with Aries’ constant help. Basically. But also just how very bad it could go at any point. This turned out to be far more angsty than I meant for it to be. My bad. Man, Garvin being told he's a terrible, terrible child growing up by almost every adult in one way or another definitely doesn't help him out here.

TW: Suicide attempt at the very least.

*~*~*~*

*We start after everything has happened and everyone’s left to start healing. Garvin is, as one probably could expect, not doing much better than he was before the whole war thing and all. He’s still very much deep in the villain arc, really only just starting to think that maybe he should try and make amends and whatnot.*

Garvin, staring at himself through the shattered mirror in his room, contemplating everything that’s happened; “I thought I saw the devil this morning… Looking in the mirror, drop of rum on my tongue… With a warning to help me see myself clearer…”

Garvin, just referring to him burning his trench coat, he’s very sad about it, he very much regrets it; “I never meant to start a fire…”

Garvin, referring to his treatment of Revan, actually, like I said, their relationship is not good, neither is their relationship after the breakup; “I never meant to make you bleed…”

Garvin, coming to the decision to at least try getting better and actually start caring about the Earth again, pushing himself off the sink counter and out of the bathroom; “…I’ll be a better man today.”

Garvin, a little bit of his envy now, as he watches the others and how much they seem to care about the Earth, trying to force himself to feel the same despite how much resentment he’s got for the world and everyone on it at the moment; “I’ll be good, I’ll be good… And I’ll… Love the world like I should.”

Garvin, deciding that for the moment trying to care isn’t working, so instead just trying to clean his room and Aries’ room up, you know, make up for all that; “I’ll be good, I’ll be good… For all of the times that I never could.”

*Garvin ends up having a way harder time with making amends and actually continuously wanting to make amends. Some days he feels like he should but doesn’t have the energy, some days he feels like he should and does have the energy, and some days he seriously doesn’t want to at all. So who does he go to? Aries! Duh, of course. Aries very quickly becomes a rock for him and in fact actually admits to some stuff himself in order to make sure Garvin doesn’t feel as bad about not being able to truly get in the groove of getting better.*

Aries, admitting that he’s rather resentful of his own past, that he very easily could’ve ended up giving up on the Earth too had he not been careful; “My past has tasted bitter… For years now. So I’d wield an iron first. Grace is just weakness– Or so I’ve been told. I’ve been cold, I’ve been merciless…”

Aries, and then admitting to why he couldn’t end up giving up on the Earth, or pretty much anything and anyone; “But the blood on my hands scares me to death…”

Aries, nudging Garvin and trying to be at least a little optimistic and hopeful, referring to them both deciding to be at least a little better than they really have to be; “Maybe we’re waking up today.”

Aries, basically just promising himself and Garvin that things will change and get better, that everything will be fine; “I’ll be good, I’ll be good– And we’ll love the world like we should. We’ll be good, we’ll be good.”

Garvin, much less certain or enthusiastic or hopeful as Aries, but willing to give him the promise in return anyway; “I’ll be good, I’ll be good…”

*Now just some Garvin regrets, and everything he thinks he needs to be better for. All the apologies he’s going to suck at giving, if he ever gets to the point where he even tries to apologize.*

Garvin, mostly about Bernard and Nico and how he just wouldn’t let them help or believe their words or basically anything else; “For all of the light that I’ve shut out… For all of the innocent things that I doubt…”

Garvin, mostly about Revan and just how terrible the two were together, probably also about Ingall if he did ever fight him; “For all of the bruises I’ve caused and the tears–”

Garvin, just about his entire life and every mistake he’s ever made or has been told he’s made; “For all of the things that I’ve done all these years, and oh–”

Garvin, once again referring to his trench coat and the fact that he burnt it to ashes; “Yeah, for all of the sparks that I’ve stomped out–”

Garvin, referring to everyone that ever tried with him, but mostly his bestie Aries and the pirates; “For all of the perfect things that I doubt…”

Garvin, absolutely crying at this point, feeling like a piece of shit, still not understanding why he hasn’t seemed to gotten better yet, why he still can’t put everything behind him and just care for all the good people on the Earth or at least the Earth itself; “I’ll be good, I’ll be good… And I’ll love the world like I should…”

Garvin, very much in the mindset that something’s just wrong with him specifically, like so many people have told him in the past and using that as a basis to believe he’s never been good, a good child, a good person, a good friend, a good anything; “I’ll be good, I’ll be good… For all of the times… I never could…”

*Yeahhh, that mindset of him never having been good in any way, shape, or form kind of gets worse and worse. To the point where, despite being out of the villain arc and redeemed and doing so much better, he becomes certain that he’s completely irredeemable. Oops. I think we all know where that leads.*

Garvin, in the midst of killing himself because obviously he’s a shit person that doesn’t deserve to live, very much feeling guilty for basically everything despite having apologized for all of it and then some by now; “For all of the times I never could…”

Song: I Don’t Exist by Olivia O’Brien.

(With some slight adjustments to the lyrics to avoid as much repeating and make it more accurate to characters in certain places)

Characters: Garvin. Briar, Aries, Therin, Clancy, Ford, and the rest of GRAIN are all mentioned to some degree.

Context:

Basically just another villain arc song for Garvin, this time centered around his envy and his total lack of self beyond him being a worthless piece of shit.

*~*~*~*

*We start, like, right after Briar and Aries get kicked out. Garvin, of course, wastes no time in starting the downward spiral.*

Garvin, just sort of thinking that he should’ve known this whole thing was going to end terribly given that everything else in his life does, broken heart here just refers to him always ending up with burnt bridges no matter how close he thought he was with someone, such as with Therin, Clancy, and Ford; “I've been doomed from the start… Everything around me falls apart so quickly… Always end up with a broken heart…”

Garvin, literally just him contemplating suicide yet again in the most half amused manner possible; “Even tylenol can’t fix me– Unless it’s mixed with whiskey.”

Garvin, just some more depression, also him refusing to acknowledge said depression and downplaying it as much as possible; “I ain’t even sad– I’m just bored. Nothing can excite me anymore, like you used to…”

Garvin, villain arc being a villain arc, he does not care about saving Earth at all, it’s a second hand sorry for the people on Earth feeling if anything at all where the idea used to seem cool and like something that could actually make him, you know, something; “Saving Earth has lost all its allure… Used to be so pretty– Now it’s just a pity…”

Garvin, just some more Garvin envy that serves as his way to shift the guilt of him not wanting to save Earth and instead blame the people living on Earth; “All of those people and all of their friends look so good together– And I don’t fit in… ‘Cause they’re picture perfect and I’m on the end… Crop me out the photo so they can pretend like I don’t exist.”

Garvin, repeating the last bit just because of how fucking hard it hits him, like, yeah, the people living there really don’t give a shit; “Like I don’t exist…”

*Skipping to a bit after they get Nico back, Garvin’s just going further down that villain arc. A lot of this is spent in Aries’ old room.*

Garvin, again just thinking about how nothing positive ever seems to last with him, there’s always something to ruin it, living in the past refers to him continuing his relationship with Revan despite how shitty it is, basically just trying to hold onto something; “When I feel good it never lasts… That’s why you can find me living in the past if you need me.”

Garvin, ranting to thin air in Aries’ room, basically acting like his bestie didn’t get kicked out/leave him; “Everybody says this shit will pass… I say it won’t, they don’t believe me, just tell me to deep breathe…”

Garvin, just him admitting that he doesn’t know what he’s doing at all, that he doesn’t know how to go about doing anything but make shit worse; “Falling apart, don’t know what to do. What to do…”

Garvin, just some more absolutely hopeless Garvin, who wants shit to go back to how it was before Aries and Briar got kicked out and Nico got kidnapped but has absolutely no idea how to fix anything whatsoever and even less of an idea of how to fix himself; “Looking for someone to save me, I don’t know who…”

Garvin, just him very much knowing who and very much missing his bestie, he knows how he is, he’s also completely certain that he’s gone forever like everybody else that ever left him in his life; “I don’t know who…”

Garvin, just him thinking that if they could’ve done it all over again, the group would’ve managed better without him, basically him shifting blame to himself while also being an envious little bitch and resenting them for, well, the exact thing he’s imagining, dude seriously be here thinking they would’ve done better without him and then getting mad at them for doing better without him, in his mind; “All of these people and all of their friends looked so good together– And I don’t fit in… ‘Cause they’re picture perfect and I’m on the end… Crop me out the photo so they can pretend like I don’t exist. Like I don’t exist…“

*And now we’re skipping to when Briar and Aries are back. Because Garvin deserves to actually get to rant to his bestie.*

Garvin, right after Aries shows back up, dealing with some very bad derealization and depersonalization, even moreso because Aries is very adamant in that he’s not some hallucination, you know, fun mental breakdown shit; “–Am I even real?”

Garvin, partly a continuation of the last bit, after the initial mental break of his bestie ‘coming back for him’ and all the intense emotions that come with it, now at a much more numb sort of area, just sort of trying to explain why the fuck he was freaking out; “It’s hard to tell when I can’t feel a fucking thing…”

Garvin, and finally some good old ranting to his bestie about how shitty the people of Earth are and how much better than him everyone in the group and how much he hates them but also doesn’t and he’s just the worst, rest assured Aries is very concerned; “All of these people and all of their friends look so good together– And I don’t fit in… ‘Cause they’re picture perfect and I’m on the end… Crop me out the photo so they can pretend like I don’t exist. Like I don’t exist…”

Garvin, some more very bad dissociation, derealization, and depersonalization being ranted to Aries because he’s literally the only person Garvin will talk to for a good while and also he isn’t doing very well at all; “Feel like I don’t exist…”

*Tiny little skip to after the group wins the war and literally nothing is fixed because we love angst way too much for that.*

Garvin, because everything in the moment of winning feels very surreal and while everyone else else is celebrating to some degree, being glad they won and whatnot, Garvin is just sort of getting pushed even further into his near constant state of dissociation and depression because he feels like, yeah, he should be happy they won and yet he isn’t and really, he doesn’t know what the fuck he’s doing, what he should be doing, or who he is; “Am I even real…”

Song: Achilles Come Down by Gang of Youths.

(With some slight adjustments to the lyrics to avoid as much repeating and make it more accurate to characters in certain places)

Characters: Therin (Rinny), Garvin, Clancy, and Fredenand (Ford). Jamyron is mentioned.

Context:

Hey, so, I decided to do an actual song lyric thing for this now! We get a lot more context and information here now. For simplicity’s sake, Therin will be referred to as Rinny and Fredenand will be referred to as Ford. Clancy still gets to be Clancy, just because I’m refiguring his nicknames anyways. The only universe this doesn’t work for is BTG and you’ll find out why eventually, haha. The French samples aren’t included, maybe someday.

*~*~*~*

*So a couple weeks before Garvin ended up leaving this group, he had a pretty bad depressive episode. Which, uh, the other three had kinda assumed by then that, yeah, he’s probably not doing as well as he claims to be doing most days. Even so, this was the first time they’d actually seen a depressive episode with him. So, simply put, none of them were very prepared for it or knew whatsoever what to do. Even still, Rinny was the first to try doing at least something.*

Rinny, he probably knew the best out of the three how bad Garvin’s mental state can get before this depressive episode, he also has had rooftop talks with Garvin before, none of which very good, he’s using a matching nickname solely because he knows Garvin loves nicknames, he’s such a good friend; “Vinny, Vinny, Vinny, come down. Won't you get up off, get up off the roof?”

Rinny, being upfront and honest because surely that’ll work, and also very quickly changing his words because he knows better than to think that Garvin would believe that more than just a few people, at max, could possibly care about him given his current state and all; “You're scaring us and all of us… Some of us love you. Vinny, it's not much but there's proof…”

Rinny, literally just him attempting to lighten the mood at least a little; “You crazy-assed cosmonaut, remember your virtue.”

Rinny, for universes where they have powers, Rinny’s ability is being to tell when someone is lying versus being honest, this line is just a great homage to that while also just being a great way to say please talk to me instead of killing yourself; “Redemption lies plainly in truth…”

Rinny, some of him trying to lighten the mood some more while also trying to get Garvin away from the very scary ledge again; “Just humor us, Vinny– Vinny, come down. Won't you get up off, get up off the roof?”

*Now we go back a bit to when the group still hadn’t found Jamyron, and in fact when Rinny had finally accepted that, yeah, his older brother was probably dead. As one could probably expect, Rinny fell into a bout of depression with that. Garvin is surprisingly good at talking people down.*

Garvin, after finally finding Rinny, mostly just trying to guage how shit Rinny’s doing and go from there; “Rinny, Rinny, Rinny, come down. Won't you get up off, get up off the roof?”

Garvin, sitting down next to Rinny, very much using his own experience to help out with the immediate issue first; “The self is not so weightless, nor whole and unbroken… Remember the pact of our youth–”

Garvin, very much using his experience, and the past rooftop experience Rinny’s had with him, in order to absolutely ruin Rinny’s immediate issue; “Where you go, I'm going. So jump and I'm jumping.”

Garvin, a moreso mumble under his breath because you know Garvin’s still got so much angst even while helping people out; “Since there is no me without you…”

Garvin, moving on from the last topic, still sitting next to him and nudging him with his shoulder, it’s time to guage again and move onto the not so immediate issue; “Soldier on, Rinny– Rinny, come down. Won't you get up off, get up off the roof?”

Garvin, taking out a cigarette and a match, because of course he’s about to smoke during this conversation, but also using it as a sort of case in point for what he’s saying; “Loathe the way they light candles in Rome, but love the sweet air of the votives.”

Garvin, lighting the cigarette and wrapping an arm around Rinny’s shoulders, keeping his voice light and flicking the match off the ledge; “Hurt and grieve but don't suffer alone– Engage with the pain as a motive.”

Garvin, literally smoking and ignoring his own fucking advice, because he’s a dumbass little bitch; “Today, of all days, see how the most dangerous thing is to love…”

Garvin, taking a breath, getting up, and pulling Rinny up too because fuck it, he’s going to get his friend off the roof one way or another; “How you will heal and you'll rise above.”

*And now, as the scene fades with Rinny fucking hugging him, we move on back to Garvin’s terrible depressive episode. He ain’t doing very well. Damn it, Garvin, take your own advice for once, you street rat pigeon man.*

Garvin, can you tell it’s hard to do a name based song with Garvin because it is, anyways, he’s just contemplating taking his own life and also being a little bitch to himself; “Garvin, Garvin, Garvin, jump now– You are absent of cause or excuse.”

Garvin, just beating himself up, you know, as one does when they seem to chase attention while also despising it; “So self-indulgent and self-referential– No audience could ever want you… You crave the applause yet hate the attention– Then miss it! Your act is a ruse…”

Garvin, literally still beating himself up but also kind of making the point that he’ll die and be forgotten no matter what he does; “It is empty, Garvin, so end it all now– It's a pointless resistance for you…”

*And we switch on to the next person to try and help Garvin with the very bad depressive episode– Clancy! He’s an odd one because his dad’s a piece of shit alcoholic and Garvin very much drinks too. He’s not having a good time. As such, he can’t quite step up to Garvin like Rinny and Ford can during this whole thing. He’s moreso watching from a distance and wanting, so very badly, to help.*

Clancy, definitely thinking that if Garvin were to stop drinking, it’d help a lot; “Garvin, Garvin, just put down the bottle. Don't listen to what you've consumed… It's chaos, confusion, and wholly unworthy of feeding and it's wholly untrue…”

Clancy, trying to take a stab at what’s wrong, doing fairly good at it, and trying to give a solution while also very much not actually being able to be a loud enough voice to do anything; “You may feel no purpose nor a point for existing, it's all just conjecture and gloom… And there may not be meaning– So find one and seize it.”

Clancy, literally just watching Garvin destroy himself and wanting to do something but not being able to; “Do not waste yourself on this roof…”

*And now we go back in time again for Garvin to help out Clancy! Because our street rat pigeon man is good at helping everyone but himself. Apparently. Despite him claiming otherwise. This time around though, instead of helping a friend’s mental state, he’s helping Clancy in a street fight because you know Clancy freaks the fuck out whenever there’s fighting.*

Garvin, literally stepping up to the people threatening Clancy like the threatening, intimidating bitch he’s capable of being given he’s over six feet tall and whatnot, just saying, having someone over six feet step up to you has gotta be a scary moment; “Hear those bells ring deep in the soul, chiming away for a moment… Feel your breath course frankly below…”

Garvin, the scary moment is probably a lot more scary when the six feet street rat pigeon man pulls out a knife though, you know, because of course he does; “And see life as a worthy opponent.”

Garvin, literally just him grinning like an idiot after beating some people up, with admittedly some help from the other three, those people really picked the wrong group to mess with; “Today, of all days, see how the most dangerous thing is to love…”

Garvin, to Rinny, kinda just echoing what he’s already said to him, putting an arm around him, read– his little brother; “How you will heal and you'll rise above.”

Garvin, to Clancy, ruffling his hair because of course he does, he’s surrounded by people shorter than him; “Crowned by an overture bold and beyond!”

Garvin, to Ford, and honestly probably blowing smoke in his face because first off, fuck Ford, and secondly, Ford’s a damn coward so wooo irony on purpose; “Ah, it's more courageous to overcome.”

*And now we go on forward back to Garvin’s depressive episode, this time with Ford trying at the exact same time to try and talk Garvin down.*

Garvin, time to beat himself up again; “You want the acclaim, the mother of mothers–”

Ford, referring to suicide; “It's not worth it, Garvin…”

Garvin, just continuing his last line and beating himself up some more; “More poignant than fame or the taste of another–”

Ford, referring to Garvin’s own negative self-talk; “Don't listen, Garvin…”

Garvin, still continuing his last line and being very mean to himself; “But be real and just jump! You dense motherfucker–”

Ford, damn if only Garvin was actually listening to reason; “You're worth more, Garvin…”

Garvin, oh and look, continuing that last line of his and absolutely being a little bitch to himself; “You will not be more than a rat in the gutter…”

Ford, dude, I don’t think Garvin’s listening to you, at least you’re trying, wooo for maybe redemptions; “So much more than a rat…”

Garvin, he’s still just being a bitch to himself, basically being like ‘I already decide to kill myself, I just have to go through with it’ and then being upset he hasn’t; “You want my opinion? My opinion you've got!”

Ford, literally just wanting Garvin to listen to reason and not his terrible self-image; “No one asked your opinion.”

Garvin, as per usual, he’s still being shitty towards himself; “You asked for my counsel, I gave you my thoughts.”

Ford, literally Garvin, please just shut up and listen to the people that care about you for once instead of the people that don’t; “No one asked for your thoughts–”

Garvin, literally just trying to talk himself into killing himself; “Be done with this now and jump off the roof!”

Ford, at the exact same time just trying to get Garvin to not kill himself; “Be done with this now and get off the roof!”

Garvin & Ford, again at the same time, both just trying to do what I’ve already established still; “Can you hear me, Garvin? I'm talking to you!”

Ford, literally just wants this guy he used to not care about at all but now cares about quite a bit to fucking listen to him for once; “I'm talking to you… Garvin, come down.”

*And now, I’m afraid, it’s time for Ford’s redemption arc to disappear from existence. That’s right. It’s time for the famous moment. Ford accidentally almost burning Garvin’s most prized possession to ash and soot, his trench coat. He’d managed to steal it from a very depressed Garvin while thinking that a trench coat with a little tombstone patch on the back of it cannot be helpful for anyone’s mental state.*

Ford, trying beyong trying to get Garvin to listen and to not give up on himself, no matter what life throws at them; “Throw yourself into the unknown with pace and a fury defiant.”

Ford, oh no the trench coat, it’s burning, unfortunately Ford doesn’t notice for a little while longer, so Garvin basically hears nothing he’s saying; “Clothe yourself in beauty untold and see life as a means to a triumph.”

Ford, using Garvin’s words/advice against him for once; “Today, of all days, see–”

*And now, we have the final moments. The group splitting up.*

Garvin, fucking leaving as one does, and as he apparently loves to do so, he’s leaving by the way of catching a train; “How the most dangerous thing is to love…”

Rinny, staring at the group’s old photo, absolutely devastated by Garvin leaving; “How you will heal and you'll rise above…”

Clancy, glaring Ford down as one does and leading Rinny away with the newly turned up Jamyron’s help; “Crowned by an overture bold and beyond.”

Ford, left behind to stare as they leave, totally confused because he really thought he’d been doing the right thing and whatnot; “Ah, it's more courageous to overcome…”

Alright, the song's finally done! Enjoy! :)

-

Song; It Took Me By Surprise by Maria Mena

(With some adjustments to the lyrics to better fit characters and avoid as much repeating in some parts)

Characters; Akira, Ingall, Revan, Garvin. Nico, Briar, Bernard, and Aries mentioned.

Notes; So, uh, this scenario is actually relatively likely to happen. Basically, after suffering for so long, Nico will eventually cross the threshold of pain and grief and slip into anger (which is also accompanied by basically a complete emotional collapse when alone or with just Bernard). It's very repressed, but clear in expression when regarding the polycule, especially Akira. The will probably happen basically after immediately after Garvin stops talking to them because that basically just proves to her that they have lost everything at that point. Ingall and Revan attempting to reconnect will fall on deaf ears and basically the only people who won't experience the silent anger of Nico after that are Bernard and then Briar and Aries when they finally show back up.

---

(The switch between grief and anger happens very quickly and is probably pretty shocking to everyone since, even in grief, Nico was still very much seeking out affection and still very clearly held affection for the rest of the polycule, then, seemingly all at once, that was completely gone.)

Akira, referancing how they pushed Nico away after getting them back as a way to protect them, and also because they didn't really know how else to react, acknowledging finally, that it may have been a mistake: "I would react badly to the slightest hint of hesitance..."

Akira, actually starting to slowly process how much Nico tried to regain their attention and how hard she worked for it, gaining nothing in return: "He'd bend awkwardly to suit my mood, no word from her defense..."

Ingall, who also had a kind of emotional breakdown after the whole kidnapping and exile thing, slowly coming to the realization that his own breakdown probably negatively impacted Nico even more given how much they'd tried to comfort him only to be quickly pushed away... Which might've felt like they were being blamed for it: "I'd cry knowing how my tears felt like acid burning through his skin..."

Revan, referring to when he started trying to talk to Nico again, only to be ignored, recognizing how Nico had probably felt the same, or, rather, worse, with how literally everyone but Bernard and Garvin ignored her: "Pushed every little button but the right one that would let me in..."

Akira, only realizing how bad everything actually is when they attempted to approach and sit by Nico and Bernard at lunch one day, only for Nico to flinch away and glare: "Now he's afraid of me, they're afraid of me... "

Akira, having quickly backed off at Nico's expression, stomach turning with unease as he recognizes the absolute rage Nico's showing, all without saying a single word: "It took me by surprise, the hatred in his eyes! I've pushed them just as far as he could go, but she lacked the words to let me know... He acted out, now I can see it is my fault..."

Garvin, referancing how he stopped talking to Nico the second Revan started talking to her, honestly more bitter than apologetic, mostly toward Revan, but still Nico as well: "I made changes, that went unnoticed, sang songs for deaf ears. He took my silence for punishment as it had been all these years."

Ingall, referencing the same thing again, getting stuck in a loop of guilt: "I'd cry knowing how my tears felt like acid burning through his skin, now he's afraid of me!"

Garvin, sighing, kinda too caught up in his own shit to really care anymore: "He's afraid of me-"

Revan, who actually probably experienced Nico's refusal to give up on someone more than anyone else, with their relationship starting with Nico absolutely bothering the shit out of Revan while Rev attempted to keep them at an emotional distance to no avail, slightly shaken by how angry and intentionally distant Nico is now, all that care and refusal to let go seemingly gone in the blink of an eye: "It took me by surprise, the hatred in his eyes..."

Akira, gritting their teeth, trying to figure out how to fix this, realizing that they definitly started this collapse with telling Ingall and Revan to distance themselves (or at least Ingall, haven't fully flushed out this part yet, lol) and doing so as well: "I've pushed them just as far as he could go, but she lacked the words to let me know. He acted out, now I can see it is my fault!"
