Storm woke up with a jolt. She looked around and realized she had slept through most of the day. She got up quickly, stretched, and trotted out of the den. She looked around, but nobody was really in sight. She wandered a bit more, trying to find other wolves. She was pissed that she had slept so long. She wondered if everyone else had already eaten, and saw that the hunting group had already returned, with only some food. She glanced at the Alpha and his mate, sleeping in their den. She walked quietly to the den.
She whispered lightly to Hades, "has everyone else eaten?"
She didn't want to be a burden anyways, so if she was the last to eat, she wouldn't mind.
Hades shook his head, and Storm continued on her way. She wanted to go into the forest. To be helpful. She couldn't bear the fact that, because she was pregnant, she was purely an extra useless mouth to feed. She wished she was never pregnant, that Moon never died, that the Lurker never existed.
I wish I could just leave this horrible place. But wishing gets you no where, she thought.l
She trotted up to Azalea and laid down next to her. She could tell Azalea was tired.
"I see hunting went all right. I wish I vouldve been there to help protect you," she said, disappointed.
"You need to stay safe," Azalea replied.
Storm knew that. She needed to stay healthy and alive so she could have her pups. But she didn't want pups. She didn't want to bring brand new lives into this horrible place.
Storm and Azalea laid in silence, watching the pack.
At least we get some peace for once, she thought, and for a brief moment, she felt okay. But it didn't last long. Her peace and quiet was disturbed by her rumbling stomach, and she realized she hasn't eaten. Storm didn't mind though, because everybody was ok for another day. Nobody was killed. Which was all she could ask for.
And so, she drifted back off into sleep, strangly tired.
~
"Storm!" a voice called, "Storm"
Storm looked into the distance, and she saw Moon. But that wasn't all she saw. There was a strange fog, heading towards Moon eerily fast. Storm started to run, as fast as she could. But the more she ran, the further away Moon seemed to get. She let out a howl, as she saw her mate get engulfed by the horrible fog. And at that moment, she saw her mate. Frozen. Dead. She collapsed to the ground, whining, whimpering, howling. Moon was gone. For good.
"Stormrunner!" A voice said sharply. She heard it again.
~
"Stormrunner!" The voice said again, as Storm opened her eyes.
"Oh, good you're finally awake. I've been saying your name. You've been howling in your sleep," Azalea said.
"Oh. I- I'm sorry. I was having a bad dream," Storm replied.
"Well, never mind that. It's time for dinner," Azalea declared.
Storm looked around and saw the pack gathered around the food pile, eagerly awaiting their meal. She walked over to the food pile, waiting for her turn to eat.
