Agris ‘Blair’ Aivars Bairugih | 20 | M | Gay+Ambi/Poly | Knight | Orin | Mentions; Those in the Garden.

Blair didn’t pay much mind to Princess Sori’s tale, he’d heard it before, when he first arrived in Orin. He still thought Frain had better ones.

--

But Lord Rosenburg’s comment on the gardener did catch his attention enough to get him to look over at the other personal knight. “Basil isn't as bad as the Prince says. He's just being dramatic.” And then the garden doors were being opened.

--

…It didn’t beat the garden he’d had back in Frain. None ever would, Blair supposed. But, the garden was impressive nonetheless. More than Orin’s, at least.

--

Hey, guys. looks like Basil was up late gardening, again. He's probably rushing to get ready for the Ball - if not he was probably complaining about the tacky flowers before I fixed them. Even if he is ready for the Ball, that wouldn't stop him from gardening.

--

Blair decided on ignoring the Lord for now, as they went and started to carry out some of the job of the gardener. At least some people of nobility here cared about the plant-life and nature. Instead though, Blair took in the garden. Truly, thoroughly took it in.

--

It would never live up to Frain’s, he hadn’t expected it to. But out of the gardens he’d seen since leaving Frain, it was surely the best. Quite frankly, it was stunning. Well-kept, no sign of weeds anywhere he looked. Not even any Digitaria, the most common weed seen in gardens. Even some of the most well-kept, pristine gardens Blair had visited had at least one area that held them! But here? There were none. The only other place he’d been to every ascend to this amount of downright care, had been the Damask Vineyard Garden. His garden.

--

He continued taking it in. There were rows and rows of lush Lavandula. Spirals of Nepeta and Solidago. The fences had fragrant Lathyrus odoratus and bright Zinnia elegans growing up and along them. And the fields of some of the healthiest Helianthus he’d ever witnessed. Frain didn’t get many of those, the weather was too cold for such a plant. They were absolutely thriving here though. And the Tagetes and Monarda didyma that circled and grew in perfect tandem- The garden was breathtaking, to put it simply. And the butterflies all around were only adding to the life he could feel just being in the garden. It was comforting, soothing. Such a nice change compared to the dull, melancholy he’d been holding down since he’d received evidence of his family’s death about a year ago.

--

And then he caught sight of all of the Rosa. There were so many types- There, that was the Floribunda Rosa, the Iceberg Rose of Frain! And there was Rosa x centifolia, one most commonly seen in Costhyme and rarely grown anywhere else! And all of the different shrub roses! And was that Rosa moyesii? And there was Rosa moschata, which always a sight to see! And then one he’d only really ever read about, Rosa rugosa. A beach rose. Which made sense, given that Kagha had one of those.

--

Honestly? It was certainly the best garden he’d seen other than his past garden in Frain. Which had surely died at this point, it couldn’t have survived him moving to Orin. And certainly couldn’t have survived while that family murderer was there. The man had probably destroyed the garden Blair had worked so hard on. Had spent almost every waking second in. The thought darkened his eyes, and caused him focus back into the conversations going on.

--

Do you mind? I'd like to see this gardener in action. Dame Edrys, hand a nice bloom to Zacharius here or maybe Rosenberg over there. Or even Kristopher over there. Put it behind his ear if you wouldn't mind.

--

And with the melancholic feeling beginning to come back up- Blair had looked over at King Randolph in a quick motion, still in a at least somewhat respectful manner, but to suggest such a thing? Did the King truly deserve such respect? For a garden this well-kept? This pleasant? This beautiful? It almost made his own heart crack, and he could only assume how upset the gardener, Basil if he’d remembered correctly, would be. And he looked over at Dame Edrys to see if she dared to listen or dared to refuse. A bad position altogether, really.

--

And she did as she had been told to do. And he could feel the air shift and change. The protector of the garden had surely been alerted of such a trespass. If it had been his garden back in Frain, he certainly would’ve been. It was a bond of gardener’s, to simply know when their, well- Their children had been injured. And to pluck a flower when it most definitely wasn’t even ready to be picked? That was equivalent in pain to the pain a mother felt at the death of her infant child.

--

Out of the corner of his eye, he could see a quarrel happening between to people he didn’t recognize. But that wasn’t truly important now. It perhaps never would be to him, given the change in the air and how it was quickly getting colder and darker. An almost murderous intent wilting the once comforting atmosphere of the garden. Damn you, Dame Edrys and King Randolph! Forsaking the rules of such a divine and spiritual place such as this garden!

--

And moments later, he found out just who Basil was. A man about his own height, shorter than the giants surrounding them. The man was wearing a floral dress, much like Prince Hyacinth, and it gave him an almost regal air. The air of a queen that you should not have messed with but did anyways. And the air of murder, the silence as he walked, spoke that the gardener truly would rain fire down all everyone there if the plucked rose was found… Well, how it would be found. Plucked. So selfishly torn from its home. The gardener went to the bush, went to Zak, took the rose back, and crushed it.

--

And then things were being thrown. and he positioned himself near Prince Hyacinth and Princess Sori- The only people who had at least had some dignity in respecting the rules of the garden, people who understood at least a bit that such a place was like a home and the gardener the parent. The nymph of such a sacred place known as a well-kept, breathtaking garden.

--

And then a rose was thrown towards him and Prince Hyacinth. So, with great care for the flower, Blair caught it and looked at the golden flower with pink at the edges. A peace rose. A Rosa Peace. A Rosa Madame A. Meilland. And a simply dazzling one at that. He couldn’t allow the work put into it go to waste, couldn’t let the entire garden fall due to rage.

--

So he held the flower while watching the scenes play out. Basil, the keeper of the garden, accuse one of the people he didn’t recognize of threatening to kill him. Which certainly didn’t bode well with Blair, murder was only okay if the one you were plotting to murder was the man who killed your family. And then Basil had thrown a dagger at her, and he could’ve been proud enough to clap if he weren’t holding a flower he was meaning to preserve and give back to the gardener. And then she had insisted it was his fault when the dagger missed, and he was half tempted to throw his CJ Yari at her. Though, that would give away that he had one on him, which wasn’t exactly what he’d been planning.

--

King Randolph was the next one to cause him some grief, as he voiced that he believed Basil’s reaction to be illogical. Which certainly wasn’t true. The poor gardener had lost a child due to his request! He tried to ignore the hope that King Randolph would be the next to have a dagger thrown.

--

But now that the chaos was starting to dwindle, starting to wilt away as Basil’s anger turned towards the one who threatened him and insisted it was his fault… He supposed now would be the best time to try and bring peace back to the garden. No matter how tense that peace could end up being. And the best way to do that? Easily with the Rosa Peace held gently in his hand.

--

And so he spoke, voice clear and sincere despite the rage and chaos still cycling around, his words aimed at Basil. And as he did, he held the preserved rose in his hand out towards the gardener slightly, careful to not let it get injured anymore than it already had. He didn’t hold it out completely, all too aware of how risky of a move this was and that the gardener may end up crushing it like the infant should a wrong move be made. “This is a splendid Rosa Peace, one of my favorites other than Rosa x damascena. It’d be a shame to let it die with its brethren. Perhaps you could replant it and let it live?

Kazimir Payne | 16 | Male | Squire | Orin | M: Edrys, NPCs, Zach (ind), Mircea (ind), Randolph (ind), Sori (ind), Mirian (ind),

Kazimir obeyed his mentor’s commands and followed her towards the Queen’s carriage. He couldn’t help but kick a little bit of dust up as he walked. A little bit of fun wouldn’t hurt, right? He looked down at his pants as the dust seemed to cling to them. Luckily he had chosen the appropriate color brown for this occasion. However, the dust was lighter than the cloth, so it appeared that he had little dots speckled on his pants. Oh well, maybe if I could—oh, right, I’m supposed to be doing something.

“Grab three of our servants to escort Queen Moriah from the carriage into the castle. Oh~ and one of our Knights…”

He nodded along as she spoke. That was an easy task. He could that. He looked around and noticed two servants unpacking the carriage.

“You two, assist Her Majesty out of the carriage and into the castle.” He spun around in search of a third. Ah, there’s one. “You, standing there twiddling you thumbs! Come and escort Her Majesty.”

Instead of commanding like he had done the servants, he approached one of the knights respectfully. He knew better than to shout orders at his superior. He recognized the knight as Sir Farlone. He had trained with his squire a few times.

“Sir Farlone,” he looked up at the middle-aged man. His deep set eyes and wrinkled brow was intimidating, and Kaz couldn’t help but gawk for a moment. “Uh, sir, I’ve been asked by Dame Edrys to ask you,” he pointed at the knight and then retracted his finger immediately. “Uh, to assist Her Majesty from the carriage and to the castle.” He stared at the knight’s knees for a while and pursed his lips. Then he turned around and returned to his mentor.

That hadn’t been awkward, not awkwardly done at all. He’d need to brush up on some social skills…. Oh, Edrys is talking again.

He nodded along with her again as she warned him about the people around him. No Kaghans can be trusted. Especially Prince Zacharius and his personal knight. Even if our Royals say so. He repeated this to himself several times so that it imbedded into his memory.

He followed the crowd for the tour, a nervous excitement bubbling in his stomach. He hadn’t been in a foreign castle before, or really a foreign anything. His past few years of squireship had been solely in Orin. He looked up and admired the high ceiling and the architectural labor that went into the building. His eyes dashed towards the pillars which painted pictures and stories. He liked to guess the meaning of them. Some of the depictions were crude as if the artist didn’t know what a horse looked like. Others were splendidly done and you could almost see the sweat dripping down a warrior king’s face. They were colorful in design, and he noted that a lot of deep reds were used for blood. The artworks kept him occupied for a time until it started to get a bit repetitive. Blood, blood, blood, death, death, death, he killed, she killed. They also became to disturb him some. All of this massacring and fighting was in Orin’s future which meant that it was in his future. It was frightening and he couldn’t help but wish with all his might that he had been born in a peaceful time or that he could rewind the clock of time so that he could’ve enjoyed his innocent bliss better. He suddenly felt an ache for home. He wanted trees, the streams, the welcoming limbs of the redwoods. But I’m here, he reminded himself. On an adventure, discovering something new, inside the Kaghan palace getting a tour from a prince. Home’s still there and is waiting for our return. These thoughts did their best to comfort him, but he still retained the yearning for the forest trails of Orin.

He tried to stay alert, hoping that the people around him would distract his homesickness. It succeeded. At least for a little bit. He watched as King Randolph hopped onto Prince Zacharius’ back. At first he blankly stared, his brain processing what happened. He eventually grew used to his king balancing on the shoulder’s of a foreigner, but every once and a while he had to do a double take. He decided that if the king did topple over he’d run over and try to catch him. Or at least cushion his fall with his body. He hoped that wouldn’t happen, although it would make him look heroic and knightly. He wasn’t sure how he’d get there on time either. By the time he realizes that the king was falling, he’d have seconds to dodge pass the rest of the party to get to the front. He doubted that he could do this feat, but he didn’t accept them.

His thoughts were distracted when he heard a Kaghan story told by the prince. In return, Princess Sori talked about the Nyxko, the Orin watcher. Kaz’s homesickness returned at the mention of the fairytale. It reminded him of the times his mother would whispering it to them before bed. He remembered that his grandmother said that she saw it one night as a black shadow drifting over the land like a fog. Kaz wasn’t sure if he believed her then. However, he still questions the existence of the folk creature although others his age had long ago dismissed it as a legend.

He wasn’t paying attention to Princess Mirian during this time, so Edrys’ words at first confused him.

“Go after the Princess, she mustn't be alone. I do not trust these walls, and so shouldn't you. Hurry.”

Where was the princess going? Why was she going off somewhere? He mentally shrugged and started after the royal in response to his mentor’s orders. He wasn’t sure what to do except for keeping by her at all times. Should he try to strike up a conversation? And why on earth was she walking so quickly? He didn’t want to, but in order to comfortably keep up with her he was forced to jog. He hated jogging, it made everything on his body bounce and jolt. Plus he could feel the knives in his shoe move whenever he landed. Although he knew that their sheaths were firm, he could imagine them giving way to the sharp points of his weapons—allowing them stab his foot.

When he did catch up, he returned to a fast walk. It was awkward not talking, but it would also be awkward to talk, especially since he could feel the princess’ irritation rebounding off of her in little rays of leave-me-alone. They both entered the queen’s room where Kaz found himself uncomfortably under the gaze of Sir Farlone, the knight who he had told to escort the queen. He seemed grimmer than ever. Unsure of what to do, Kaz flashed a closed-lipped smile which made him look incompetent. Then he set his gaze to the floor and he relied on his hearing to know what was happening. He heard someone shut a door and it was fairly quiet except for the queen’s soft humming as she worked on her needlepoint. The ocean was right outside the room and it flushed his nasal cavities full of the salty smell. The noise of the water pounding upon the rocks was rhythmic and he found himself feeling sleepy. It had been a busy day, after all. He shut his eyes.

“You and you.”

Kaz opened his eyes to the commanding voice. The princess wanted to go somewhere. Ugh, he wanted to stay here and fall asleep. He remembered his mentor’s words and rose out of his leaning position. He was aware that she hadn’t called upon him to go with her, but he had been told to follow her. Unless she ordered him to return to the tour, he’d have to go along with her and her escort. Besides, it would be better for the Kaghan guard to be completely surrounded by Orinian knights.

He followed the princess and her escort along different pathways trying to shake off his sleepiness. For a while he tried to open his eyes as wide as they could and stare unblinkingly at everything. It worked for a while and then his eyes started watering so he was forced to blink. During their walk he was constantly yawning and popping joints. His short nap had done him no good and could’ve possibly done him worse.

Ah ha, finally! He could see the beginnings of a garden. The leafiness of the plants, the bushes, the flowers. They were beautiful, but still nothing compared to the towering redwoods. There were a few tress, which brought him little comfort. They weren’t the same, however, and were spaced out so that there wasn’t even a decent-sized grove. He did find one of the trees interesting. It was a willow and its long drooping leaves created a pleasant looking sleeping spot. The thought of napping made him yawn again. He hoped that the princess would be attracted towards the tree and he would be able to at least sit under the cool of its shade.

Kristopher Venturi

24 || Male || Prince || Kagha || Mentions: Salen[ind.], & Others in the Garden

The prince could see Mircea was quite amused with his conversation with Zak. Nearly laughing at the mention of spontaneous wrestling. It definitely seemed like something they might do, but he knew now wasn't the time to try and jump his brother. Especially with the foreign royals around. He nearly let out a groan at his brother's response to his comment concerning his height. Kristopher was going to make a comeback, something along the lines of “only malnourished because you used to steal my snacks” but decided against it. Though he wasn't about to let it go. Kris would get him next time.

Or so he thought.

He couldn't just let his brother expose his tiny arms when they were younger like that-

“My arms were only delicate after you broke my wrist with your wooden sword. A wound such as that takes time to heal, dear brother, I may have been out of commission for a few weeks. I apologize if that inconvenienced our rough housing.” He was able to see a sneaking Zacharius flash him the middle finger, hiding it by pretending to scratch his nose. Oooh, how good. Kristopher played his off when he went to go scratch his head, sending his brother the bird in response, proceeding to ignore him by looking straight on at their guests. Shooting Mircea a glance to see if the knight had caught the interaction.

He was quite happy with the way everyone had grilled into the Orin princess, though Mircea’s comment had him snickering. "Even if you did hunt down Kris for a dance. I don't think you'd be able to keep up with his dancing."

“True, true,” he added, tilting his head towards the knight. Kristopher’s dance skills were unmatched, and he was rather passionate when it came to his dancing. He had been practicing for years, for a moment such as this where he would be able to show off his skills. He was quite fast when it came to dancing as well, his long legs providing longer strides. In response, the princesses' rather satisfying response, of turning red and storming off had been a sight to see. The prince was now fully “recovered” from his offended state after the jab at his mask, and the comments towards Mircea.

His eyes narrowed as he watched the Orin Princess step towards Mircea, right before she had announced she wouldn't be joining the others for the tour. Her voice was rather quiet, perhaps something only intended for Mircea, so he wasn't able to pick up on the remaining combo. He would ask his friend about it later. Kristopher’s grin widened at the success of his comments toward Princess Sori, he was sort of a spur-of-the-moment type of guy, and it had come in handy when dealing with his conversation with Mirian. Especially when her sister agreed to a dance. "I think I would quite enjoy dancing with you, Prince Kristopher,"

“Then I look forward to dancing with you, your Majesty.”

As soon as the words had left his mouth he noticed the Orin King move towards his brother, before hopping directly onto his back. The noise Zak made sounded like he was being momentarily strangled, a more shocked expression on his face that couldn't keep Kristopher from emitting a short laugh, sounding more like a bark. Holy shit- What would Salen say if she saw this? The thought made him cackle more. Just wait until she hears about this…

It seemed as if the group was ready to proceed with the tour. Kris gently placed his mask back upon his head, pulling it down until it covered his eyes again before following the group out to the garden. The gorgeous landscape was in full bloom, Basil had done a wonderful job, as usual. The garden was a peaceful place, one that the Prince would walk in his free time. Kristopher figured most of the chaos had been left behind in the castle, now that they were in a calmer atmosphere, but he was wrong.

The Orin King had insisted that one of the knights pick a flower. He shivered slightly as the knight obeyed, picking a flower and twisting it behind Zak’s ear. Basil wouldn't be happy to find a flower had been picked, rightfully so after working so hard on the castle's garden. Dame Edrys had placed the flower behind Zak’s ear, but the pair's interaction soon faded to the background when he noticed Ka just behind him….doing who knows what with a woman on top of him. His brother's comment of “lovers quarrel” seemed to sum up the situation quite well. Ah, he would tease Ka about this during training some other time.

It was then that Basil made his entrance, taking the flower from behind Zak’s ear and crumbling it in his hand, before throwing a variety of objects toward the group. Kris himself had to dodge a garden snake that the gardener had thrown, side-stepping the creature as it wiggled in the air. But that wasn't even the most dramatic part of his entrance. The prince nearly gasped as the gardener. and the girl on top of Ka recognized each other. and Basil pulled out of a dagger. Instinctively a hand shot to his chest, if a fight broke out Kris had one of his knives in a hidden pocket inside of his suit coat. He would be ready to defend his friend.

His focus was cut short by a Dodge, dodge, dodge!” coming from the Orin king spinning his brother to avoid the flying objects. Kristopher’s face began to hurt, never in his life had he grinned this much, the interaction had him almost doubled over. Never in his life had Kristopher encountered anyone quite like the Orin King. He was very entertaining to be around and seemed to be the most vocal out of the remaining Orin royals. Though the king had called to his daughter shortly after, Mirian, it seemed, had returned to the tour.

Mircea Vasilica Rosenburg

23 :: Masculine :: Knight :: Mentions: Those In The Garden, Orin Royals, Basil , Kaghan

To say Mircea was pissed within reason would be an understatement. He wanted to stab someone, poison someone, maybe wringing someone's neck would do the trick - in any case he was homicidal. Because how fucking dare the Princess Mirian threaten his life - it's not as if he was underestimating her as a woman , because he knew for sure women could kick a grown man's ass when needed , it was just her damned attitude that irked his nerves. So she could go around being and annoying brat in an foreign land and not deal with having her own medicine dished out? Pathetic, and it seemed her brother had a similar thought with the way he grilled into the Princess before she made hee unceremonious exit. Thank the Gods she was gone - for now at least. Everything went rather smoothly, and he was rather surprised to see how happy Sori was when he mentioned the legend his father spoke to him when he was a babe. And she rather tactfully - unlike her sister asked if his father was of Orin heritage. He gave her a soft smile at the question.

"Yes, my father is Atticus Rosenberg. He was a Commander back in Orin, but he felt his life was empty with war - even though he achieved glory. So he resigned - with honor, of course and spent days traveling and accumulating his wealth until he met my mother, Lady Estella Vôntes - the eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess and future Duchess. That's when father fell in love and after a while they got married and had my brothers and sisters and then me. My family being twelve strong - with 5 girls and 5 boys , me being the youngest. My favorite thing dad used to do was take us to the festival in Orin where you released the lanterns, I remember thinking that was such a beautiful tradition."

He then gave a embarrassed look saying, "I'm sorry, I'm rambling aren't I? " he took the princesses insightful words and he gave a small smile saying, "I would have to agree, and with each retelling of a legend one could learn something new or find something to treasure about said legend." He then watched as she went off with her little brother, and Mircea had to say he was happy she had someone to lean on.

He had no sooner entered the garden when he heard Zacharius talk of a wild fae. And Mircea had to look around a bit before he realized that Zacharius was talking about him. God that man was insufferable.

"Then what are you, your highness - A genie coming to grant us 3 wishes a piece. Oh wait, I guess that would mean someone has found your magic lantern - who dares to posses the prince." He says teasing Zacharius back, but one could easily notice the redness of the tips of his ears, but he had grin on his face. And he even added an innocent tilt of his head before swiftly moving past him.

He then had to force himself from cackling at the scene of Commander Kaghan and the foreign stranger. But then examining the wear of the person, his amber eyes narrowed a bit - it was obvious they were from the Kingdom Of Edyss.

"A lover from the Kingdom Of Edyss, Commander?" Mircea said rather teasingly, " and here I thought you would have better taste than that." He thoughtfully placed his hand on his cheek saying, "I dated a man from Edyss once, he was - how do I say this, a little cunt."

Then he gave an even more mischievous grin. Zacharius had been flirting with Edyss so what was the harm with indirectly flirting with his Commander, after all he was his Second. He gave a soft sigh, "Such a romantic affair, Commander. A love story for the ages if you wil, and you even have pet names." He have a dramatic sniff, "I envy you. They say the earth laughs in flowers, well it must've been very happy the day you were born, Commander." He have a charming smile before realizing something was terribly wrong.

Someone had picked a flower.

He could feel the atmosphere change, and he already knew what was coming - and he swiftly moved out of the way. He was not about to be attacked by an angry Basil. His suspicions were soon found to be correct as the doors burst open dramatically to reveal a sullen and pissed off looking Basil.

And without a word Basil had begun to stir up hell like a truly pissed off nymph. Kris had avoided a snake being thrown at him and Mircea got a word to land on his mask, and gingerly he took the creature off said mask and placed it in the dirt. He was about to try and calm down Basil when the kid shouted to the person on the floor about threatening to kill him. Mircea had to blink his eyes slowly and lift his head to replay that in his head. Did someone threaten to kill Basil? And no one told him? But was even more shocking was the force the young Basil threw a dagger at the perp. And it revealed a nasty cut on them, and Mircea could feel his blood boil.

If anyone was dangerous when pissed , it was Mircea. He slowly stepped out his heels, and was taking his time taking off his earrings. He was about to beat somebody's ass right here and now and he didn't care who's it was.

"Somebody is about to fuckin' die." He murmured under his breath as he turned to see where the dagger went. He was gonna use it to torture the unfortunate soul that had dared to lay a finger on Basil.

"Now, who decided to put their motherfucking hands on Basil. Because I just want to talk." If Basil's aura was scary then Mircea's was ten times worse and it held a frosty edge to it.

Zacharius Venturi

26 :: Masculine :: Prince of Kagha :: Mentions: Everyone in the garden, Mirian [ind]

When Kristopher recited the childhood trauma that Zacharius made the younger brother endure, he could only let out an exaggerated sigh. The day that Zacharius broke Kristopher’s wrist was a memorable one.

The birds were chirping, the summer winds were blowing, and little Kristopher’s crying was being hushed by a desperate, young Zacharius, who didn't want to get his ass beat by a couple of angry parents.

Zak can vividly remember the panic on his face when he realized the trouble he’d get into if his parents found out about Kris’s injury. In a way, he felt like he was in more pain than Kris. The lectures he had to go through just because Kris couldn’t avoid the lightest tap of Zak’s wooden sword.

“Are you still on about that? Normally people would’ve moved away from an object coming straight at them,” Zacharius shot Kristopher a haughty smirk before continuing. His tone would've almost been pitiful if it wasn't drenched in amusement.

“It was inconvenient,” Zacharius noted the days he had to spend under the supervision of a nanny, who prevented him from doing anything potentially harmful. He managed to rid himself of the nanny when he hid inside of a cabinet and got her fired for losing sight of him. Ah, fond memories.

Apology rejected,” Zacharius muttered, snickering at his own comment, full-heartedly knowing that the petty remark would further feed the flame of their continuous insult war.

Zak couldn’t help but notice when Kris reached to scratch their hair, revealing a certain gesture that made Zacharius roll his eyes at them. Now he knew why he never felt guilty for making Kris go through his shenanigans for long. Kristopher was just as much of a shit as he was.

He followed Kristopher’s quick glance at Mircea, a smile tugging at his own lips. He knew what his brother was thinking.

I’m going to snitch on you so hard after the ball.

Zacharius’s attention was grabbed when Sori asked Mircea about his past. He would’ve missed it if he wasn’t finished messing with Kristopher. The princess talked in such a soft tone that it was almost strenuous to keep a focus on what she said whilst maintaining the position of the better Kaghan prince.

Zacharius flickered a small stare toward Sori’s little brother, who was addressed as Hyacinth. He shamelessly eavesdropped on them.

A room with your brother? Wow.

While Zacharius was a bit understanding of their situation, he couldn’t imagine having to survive in the same room as Kristopher. Just thinking about it made him shiver uncomfortably.

Kristopher would have to sleep on the floor while I get the bed. He sleeps on the floor anyway so it’s no problem for him. I’d have dibs on the tub, but then again he’d probably still be asleep on the floor by the time the tub would be ready. He would definitely wake up at the smell of food, so I’d have to tackle him down to get the first bite. Maybe if I keep Kristopher malnourished he’ll shrink an inch or two.

Well, maybe he could imagine it.

Zacharius was getting a little too into the idea, when his amusing train of thought was wrecked by Sori and Hyacinth looping arms and chatting about how much of a shit their sister was. The mention of Mirian brought his mind back to her drama-induced scene.

If Mirian stayed just a little more, she would’ve been able to learn about Mircea’s past. It explained his Orinian boots, which were the root of Mirian’s questions.

Why were his thoughts still lingering on the woman? Was it the way she left the group? The way she muttered to Mircea?

The curiosity made Zacharius want to follow her and ask her some questions of his own. With her blatant speech, he felt as though he could derive enough information from her to satisfy himself.

How would he get to her without making her father suspicious of him?

It clicked.

The ball. It would be perfect timing. His mini interrogation session would be blanketed by a lovely dance between the two. The fellow royals would think it’s just his courtesy. The rest of the people in the ball wouldn’t be inclined to know who Mirian and Zacharius were, it was so perfect. This way would be much more effective and discreet than tailing her like some sort of stalker.

Zacharius set his idea in stone. He’d ask the princess to dance, no matter how many suitors she had, and from there, he’d let his questions roll. He gave a satisfied nod to himself, proud that he was able to think of such a thing.

...

Zak kept forgetting about Randolph, to be honest. Whenever the king would talk, he’d be shocked to find it coming from above his head. Randolph complained about walking on flat ground and talked about being a dead weight on rough terrain. Zak nearly let out a scoff at his words.

You feel pretty deadweight to me.

Before Zacharius could speak a filtered version of his words, he felt hands grip his neck. He could feel the intricate callouses in Randolph's palm when he realized what the guy was doing. A million questions raced through Zak, which made him tense up.

Is he off-balance?

Is he falling?

Is he going to take advantage of my vulnerability and strangle me for being rude?

When did I upset him?

Can he read minds- no that's absurd Zak... but is it?

I can’t throw an old man off my shoulders even if he’s attacking me, that’s just cruel.

The release of pressure made Zak confirm that the gesture was intended, and wasn’t an assault.

Did he just… feel my pulse?

Zacharius’s eyes were filled with bewilderment as they narrowed into confused slits.

He parted his lips to ask about it but decided against it. How does one even ask for a plausible explanation for what just happened?

Zak’s attention was stolen by Mircea, who seemed to be matching him in his own game. The way that Mircea nearly stuttered had Zak’s eyes shining with amusement. A charming look crossed his face and Zacharius batted his long, dark lashes, as if perplexed about what Mircea said to him.

“For you, I’d grant any wishes,” He tilted his head amorously, keeping his gaze on Mircea. He could see the man’s ears turning red, which urged Zak to continue.

“Let me guess your three wishes…” Zak neared Mircea, lowering his voice to where the exchange could only be heard between the two… and perhaps the guy on his back, which he had forgotten about, again.

One, you wish you didn’t turn a beet red at everything I said,” Zak drew his face closer to Mirs and continued, his eyes still locked.

Two, you wish I would get closer,” Zak slowly started to withdraw, very slowly, as if trying to lure in a beast.

Three, you wish you and I were the only two in this garden,” That flirtatious parting of his lips was the finishing touch as he returned to his full height.

A slight hum escaped him as he lightly shrugged, only aware of Randolph’s presence when he felt the 200 pounds force his shoulders back down.

“Being a genie, I could grant those wishes. That is if you were to possess me,” The last bit seemed like more of a submissive flirt, one that Zacharius rarely pulled out, but one that was also equally as effective.

The Orinian royals were debating with themselves- something to do about the concept of picking flowers or something along those lines. So perhaps they didn't hear the last bit, but one could never be too sure. Though he could feel Sori look at him with a hint of confusion, he knew the glance wasn't out of questioning for his flirt, but out of questioning for Kagha's intriguing way of flirting.

No, not all of us are this bold in our affairs. He wanted to say and nearly gestured to Kagha.

Right now, Zacharius was focused on Kagha’s explanation. Seeing Kagha being crushed under the woman’s weight whilst trying to explain that they weren’t lovers made Zak snort.

“I mean I never really tried to pry into your hobbies, and I’m glad I didn’t,” Zak sarcastically rose his brows and side-eyed Kagha and his… opponent? Lover still sounds better.

The woman didn’t look exactly sane, especially when she licked her blood-ridden lips, which Zak only just noticed.

“Hosting a freakshow your highness?”

The words were ominously venomous, and Zak wanted to transform to an intimidating demeanor at her comment, but refrained. Who was this chick? After examining her more, her height, her build, the authority that she so blindly demanded.

The Empire. Tread carefully, Zak.

Could she be a spy? A noble? Hell, they were in trouble if she was royalty or some infamous soldier.

All jokes aside, Kagha was definitely on the verge of murdering her, which wouldn’t bode well with the Empire if they found out one of their royals or knights was being treated in such a way.

Shit. What would Salen do… What would Salen do…

All the while thinking this, Zak maintained an aloof expression, as if he wasn’t contemplating a thousand ways the Empire would take this interaction as a direct threat.

For now, he had to keep up the act so that the enemy standing before him wouldn’t sense anything was off. For once, he was thankful for being taken to Black Hill Prison at a young age to learn the lesson behind emotions, and how they can give away everything.

“If you must know my name, it is Kagha Talmeren, Commander of the Kaghan Armies. Rather appropriate, no?”

Zak rolled his eyes at Kagha, dramatically crossing his arms before realizing that they were the thing stabilizing the king on his shoulders. He made sure to keep a steady balance just in case.

“Don’t forget the “Pale Bear~”” Zacharius remarked, making his hands jazz out for extra effect.

Right after his words, Kagha flipped the woman under him with such fluency that Zak would’ve believed Kagha if the man said that they had rehearsed that.

“I find the hatred here quite intriguing, I wonder what she did to get that sort of treatment,”

Zak instinctively nodded to Randolph’s words, a constant smile tugging at his lips as he watched the two interact.

Though his curiosity-filled eyes were dimmened into concerned ones when Kagha mentioned Basil.

“What do you-“

Zacharius was cut off by Mir, who had flamboyantly made his entrance into the conversation.

I didn’t know Kagha had any taste. Zak retorted in his mind, looking between Mircea and Kagha.

“I dated a man from Edyss once, he was-“

The rest of Mircea’s sentence blurred into a jumble of words when Zacharius played the section of his sentence. He was glad he had selective hearing because damn he would’ve missed out on this goldmine if he didn’t.

Without thinking, and without filter, Zacharius looked to Mircea, the questions obviously plastered on his face.

“You’ve dated a man?” From Edyss? The last question was asked in his head, one that he would tell Mircea about when there wasn’t a crowd.

Zacharius had a mix of emotions. For one, he was kind of hurt that Mircea didn’t mention his secret lover to him. Secondly, Mircea didn’t mention that he had dated a guy, which would’ve been vital information.

Where can I find this 'guy from Edyss'. The words were laced with petty mockery when Zacharious thought of them.

When Mircea continued on with communing with Kagha, Zacharius couldn’t help but notice the flirts thrown in there.

He needed a moment to process this.

Mircea? And Kagha?

He looked like a deer in the headlights, constantly looking between the two as if wondering how- when- why Mircea would flirt with Kagha. The two never flirted. Kagha never flirted.

A twinge of emotion twisted in Zak’s chest as he bit back extra comments. This emotion was familiar. It was the kind he’d get whenever Kris got to eat a platter of sweets while Zak was grounded in his room… The same feeling he’d get when he saw the other teens playing and partying on the beach while he had to study with advisors in his room. It was torture then, and it was torture now.

The only way he felt he could cope with this jealousy, was to do what he did best.

Zacharius tilted his head playfully as if he didn’t have a confusing storm of emotions brewing in him.

Awww, Mirceaaa~ I wanted to be the first man you dated,” Zacharius said in a mischievous tone, eyeing Mircea like a hawk to see what reaction would sprout from him.

When Mircea tensed up, and the weird-ass lady that was now under Kagha talked about murderous intent, Zak pulled himself out of his trance. He nearly flinched at the sound of doors swinging open and the stomping that neared them.

Shiiiiit.

Zak slowly turned around, snaking his hands back up to help stabilize Randolph just in case Basil tried to tackle him down for the flower that was like a laser pointer luring a cat. He felt so exposed with a bright red target twisted behind his ear.

Like a sitting duck, he waited for Basil to release some sort of squeal or screech that indicated how upset he was with Zacharius for having picked a flower. None such noise came as Basil came into sight, stopping by the bush that was lacking a singular rose.

When Basil turned toward Zak, Zak wished that he could deflate into a raisin. The pure storm of emotion that twisted in Basil’s eye was one that made Zak feel incredibly guilty for having gone along with the whole flower thing. He was expecting to get chewed out by the gardener, but instead, Basil delicately pulled the rose from his ear, which scraped against Zak’s skin, causing a long trickle of blood to spill down his ear and blend into his onyx hair. An observant eye would be able to see the faint tint of red hidden on the edge of his sunkissed ear.

Zacharius had never seen Basil so… consumed by anger. He was openly shocked when Basil crumbled the rose in their hands, letting the remnants spill to the floor as if it was nothing. Zak watched the flower drop, then brought his eyes back to Basil’s face. It was as red as a tomato but had a certain blush that Zak was familiar with.

When did Basil drink? Never.

When did Basil not retch at the smell of blood- especially his own? Never.

Something was terribly wrong with the poor young man, and Zak had the heart to reach out to him, but ultimately missed when Basil spun around and made a beeline toward a few objects. The way that Basil caressed a certain rock made Zak slowly begin to back up. The way Basil gripped the object, his hand shaking as he did so, made Zak back up even faster.

Suddenly, a rock caught air. Then another, and another. Eventually, Basil started to get creative and objects of all kinds were soaring. Zak managed to dodge them quite well up until the King on his shoulders started to sway about. He was thrown off balance when tufts of his hair were yanked side to side and nearly toppled over. Zak couldn't help but let out a muffled cough when the king kicked at his ribs as if he was some sort of mount. His head flung back at the force of the king’s pulling, and he nearly tripped over himself.

Zacharius could only imagine how demeaningly funny this must’ve looked. His suspicions were confirmed when Kristopher started to barrel over in laughter. Zak, too, almost fell into a cackling mess when he saw Kris almost get smacked upside the head by a snake that couldn’t escape Basil’s rage.

He shouldn’t be laughing, but he was.

It didn’t help that Kristopher’s laughter was contagious. It’s all his fault for laughing in the first place. This was a serious situation.

Yet Zak could only keep laughing, and the more he laughed, the harder he laughed.

That was until, as delirious as he currently was, he noticed a potted figurine of a fairy flying at him, with the intent to kill. He couldn’t swivel out of the way to dodge it, since Randolph’s attempts at making him dodge was the opposite of helpful. The only thing Zak could do was lift his forearms up and wait for the impact.

He felt the solid figure crack and shatter as it smacked against his arms. Bits of the figurine rained down, shattering whatever was still intact when it made contact with the ground.

When objects stopped being thrown, Zak took a good look at the carnage. It was a flowery blood bath. Like some kind of allergy-prone person finally got their revenge by wreaking havoc on the garden.

Zak, thinking it was over now, was efficiently caught off guard by Randolph ducking once more and cursing under his breath. Zak stumbled backward, barely managing to catch himself in time.

He looked up to see the source of what caused Randolph to panic, and it was none other than sweet, innocent Basil, throwing a dagger at the woman who was now beneath Kagha.

“You- you threatened to kill me,”

Zak froze, staring down the woman who was accused. So that’s why Basil was so different. Not only was one of his flower babies stolen, but his life was threatened for the first time in forever. The buzz of alcohol definitely didn’t help, either.

For a moment, Zak didn’t believe Basil’s words. He didn’t want to believe them. What could they do to her? Especially if she was someone renowned. They couldn’t throw her in prison and say “she threatened to kill one of our servants, this is totally not an act of war so please turn a blind eye”.

When Zak took in the woman’s words, he could only lock his eyes on Mircea, who was delicately taking off his jewelry while calmly expressing death threats.

Fuuuuuuuuck.

Zak audibly groaned in displeasure when he kneeled to the ground and let Randolph off his back. The enticing “Oooh” that Randolph let out made Zacharius suppress a smile. He was still feeling the high of laughing with Kristopher just moments before.

Zacharius didn’t realize how heavy the guy was until the burden of Randolph's weight was lifted. Literally. Zak could feel the muscle in his shoulders clawing at his skin in defiance when he stood up.

Zak did a half-hearted form of a skip and a jog toward Mircea, quickly placing a hand on his shoulder to stop him from continuing. He knew Mircea would want to beat that woman’s ass, whether it was with his bare fists or his absurdly long heels. Ten hells, he might even kill her after seeing Basil’s neck.

A part of Zak wanted to let Mircea loose on a rampage, hell, he wanted to hold Mircea’s heels while rooting for him in the fight. But, the little Salen on his shoulder forced him to play the prince role.

If we cause a scene with the Empire, everything that was planned is going to fail. The empire would be up their ass in seconds, and rising suspicions would lead them to the buried truth. Zacharius couldn’t let that happen. Too much was at stake.

Mircea,” Zacharius grimaced, his tone was commanding. He didn’t need to express the rest of his explanation for doing what he did, because he knew Mircea would have some kind of inkling of understanding. Or, at least he hoped.

“Escort the royals to the ball, that’s an order,” Zacharius lifted his hand from Mircea’s shoulder before turning to Kagha.

Zacharius’s aloof manner was stiffened by the kind of authority only a king could have. One would think he was Emperor of the world by the way he walked.

Commander, take the woman into the barracks and help nurse her back to health. Take some soldiers with you,” Zacharius ordered. On the outside, it would’ve seemed like he was trying to help the woman, but the way he looked at Kagha indicated more- it was a look that Zak often offered to the man; Interrogate her. Get the information we need; Why she came to my kingdom. Who she is. Her intentions.

Zacharius finally made his way to Basil, who was being talked to by what he supposed was Prince Hyacinth’s personal guard, since the guy was shadowing the young prince ever since they arrived. The man was quiet up until now, and only just started talking about the flower in his hand.

Zak ignored him.

Basil,” His voice was a rumbling, deep one that demanded immediate attention, yet his eyes were oddly soft for holding such a demeanor.

He forced himself not to look at the nasty cut on Basil’s neck.

“I expected more from you.” The disappointment that dripped from his lips was just as cold as his voice.

“You of all people should know the work that has been put into this event. Clean yourself up and come back to the ball when you’ve gathered your thoughts. You are to find me after the ball to discuss your future in this kingdom,” Zak kept his eyes on Basil. It may have sounded like a threat, but Zak just wanted to talk to Basil about what happened, and, possibly enforce him in the military. The way he threw that dagger without an inkling of knowledge and practiced skill had potential. The collection in his rage had what the Kaghan army strived for.

Every citizen of Kagha has to get military training someday, and right now, Basil would gain from learning something. He should be learning how to protect himself so he didn’t feel so helpless and alone when his life was threatened. So he wouldn't feel as though he needed others in order to be safe.

Not everything in this world was sunshine, rainbows, and flowers. Basil was just starting to figure that out, and if Zacharius didn’t put a leash on him now, he feared he would lose Basil altogether. Enforcing some tough love sounded a lot better than being in a world that lacked Basil.

Edrys Kolsvalk

22 Years || Female || Knight || Orin || Mentions: Everyone in Garden, Zacharious, Basil

Just as she pulled her hand away, attempting to stand beside her King, fingers had gently gripped firmly around her wrist, and her eyes flashed to the Prince. The Knight tugged her wrist back, however it wasn't enough but she surely knew that, clenching her jaw. What was this? He saw the thorn didn't he? Damn it. He had two if not a hundred options, either to let it go or to announce the fact a Knight purposely pricked the Prince of Kagha. Unofortunately, Edrys was no special human of any sort, and couldn't read the minds of any other being. Just the thought of the Prince telling her King she purposely pricked him sent silent shivers down her spine, and her pupil's slowly growing larger as her eyes expanded in slight fear. It wasn't just earlier that the Princess, Sori, asked her not to do anything such as this. Fuck.

“Aww, Dame Edrys, have you taken a liking to me?”

Oh how she wanted to reply in such a ill - mannered way. She was on the verge of speaking words no Royal Knight should ever speak to Royalty, and oh' was she dying to speak. Her once dilated pupils quickly shrunk back to their size, and her eyes no longer showed any emotion, just a blank expression.

Zacharious had let go of her hand, and she quickly took it back, tucking it beneath her cloak, and she took a few steps back, standing beside her Royals, not entirely sure who she was standing by, but it didn't exactly matter.

Clearing her throat quietly, the woman tilted her head down towards the floor, keeping herself from looking like a fool. In some way, that vile creature that called himself a prince did not succeed in one thing, but another. Making the Knight of Orin, Edrys, blush. No, it wasn't very noticeable, it was quite the other way around. No one could really see it, only those whom's eyes were 2 inches away from her face could and even then, probably not. She could feel the heat in her face, mostly along her wrist where the prince had gripped it. What was she even experiencing? It sure wasn't embarrassment and it sure wasn't.. what was the children back at home called it? A crush? Aha. No. It was no such thing, just a bit flustered is all.

As the King spoke, she could feel his eyes on her. Somewhat worried, she slowly glanced up at him, only to see King Randolph nodding approvingly into her direction, specifically her. A wave of relief zipped throughout her body, and she took in a nice deep breath, relieved.

She could hear someone speaking of a couple of lovers, but she was not interested enough to look into their direction. Edrys looked back towards the ground, keeping herself motionless awaiting for herself to be ordered, or to do anything really. Did it get boring sometimes? How she'd have to wait, standing still, until someone would call for her to do their bidding, to clean their shoes, fluff their neck collar? Well, yes. It used to be tiresome on her legs too, however she had grown past that many, many years ago.

Everything was mildly fine, up until doors were slammed open, with a loud, chilling bam. It caught her attention, and her head whipped up violently, her eyes latching onto the person who carelessly slammed the doors open. She didn't expect to have literal chills flying down her spine, her skin growing cold with goosebumps as her eyes followed te angered man. Wait, was that the gardener? The one they spoke of?

Oooh shit.

Well, as long as he didn't know it was Edrys who tore the flower from its life essence, then it would all be fine. Hopefully. But of course, there is no such thing as everything being "calm" and "fine" in this reality.

As soon as the glint of metal flashed through the air, the Knight didn't hesitate, she didn't draw her hidden weapons, her eyes locked onto the Gardener as if he were a target. And in this scenario, he was in her eyes. If he made the wrong move, or even glared in her Highnesses directions she made sure he'd never glare at another living being again.

Edrys didn't need to look around, the atmosphere was clear enough. After the King shouted needless words, she knew some of her Highnesses' were not as worried as other may have been. But that was not unusual, its always best to keep calm and never let your enemies see your cowardly side.

It wasn't until long, that the Prince ordered his personal Knight to take the Orin Royals to the ball, and Edrys glanced to her Royals, keeping close to them, her hand hiding beneath her cloak, pressed against the handle of her weapon.

Mirian Orianna Thezmaer

23 | F | Princess of Orin | Mentions: Kazimir, Neveyn

Oh no. The sounds of the tour ahead of them were getting louder, and the hallway they were in didn’t seem to branch anytime soon. The tour group was rapidly coming into view when the Kaghan guard she was following made an abrupt right turn into a small aisle tucked behind one of the many ornamented pillars flanking the palace’s halls. Mirian breathed a silent sigh of relief as the corridor opened into a small walled garden, empty but for a small, pale woman attired for the masquerade ball. The lady didn’t seem to notice the arrival of Mirian and her guards, and she didn’t present an obvious threat so Mirian turned her attention back to the garden. Finally, peace and quiet away from that oppressive ocean. Mirian inhaled the scents of willow and jasmine, and listened to the soft sounds of her footsteps on the grass. It was still too sunny to be mistaken for home, but it was the closest to Orin as she was likely to find in Kagha. The garden wasn’t much, some dirt paths crisscrossing trellises of clematis and ivy, a few trees providing meager shade, and several ornamental shrubs.

It was at that moment that Mirian noticed the third guard accompanying her. She recognized him immediately as the squire Kazimir, and felt bad all over again for not remembering his mentor Edrys’s name earlier. Edrys… now there was a woman Mirian would have felt at ease with. She was quiet, not demanding idle conversation nor seeming to mind the silences between. Not to mention that she was lovely to look at, and for a moment Mirian dared to imagine what it would be like to dance with Edrys, losing herself in the woman’s jade eyes and jet hair… Mirian abruptly shook her head as if to physically shake the thoughts loose. No. You cannot get distracted with what will not and should not happen. To distract herself, she turned back to Kazimir. She knew the squire somewhat from sparring sessions, and had always admired his determination and commitment to not let his size hold him back. In that way she felt a slight kinship with him, coming from a family where she was also constantly outsized. She followed his gaze towards the tallest of the trees, identified as a willow by its drooping leaves. Mirian smiled slightly at Kazimir.

“If we were in Orin I’d challenge you to a race to see who could climb that tree the fastest.” Her voice was soft, her tone teasing. “Unfortunately this dress makes climbing impossible, but if you want to take a shot at it I won’t tell anyone.” Mirian’s eyes glimmered with mischief. Leaving the boy to contemplate his tree, Mirian’s gaze once again settled on the garden’s other occupant. Something about the woman seemed familiar. Her hair? Maybe her face, or the way she held herself? Her brain itched with recognition, but Mirian couldn’t put a name or even a place to where she might have seen the woman before. Signaling the other two guards to stay put, Mirian made her way over to where the woman stood, apparently lost in thought.

“Good evening,” she said, doing her best not to startle the woman, “This may sound odd, but I swear I know you from somewhere. I am Princess Mirian Thezmaer of Orin, and you are?”

As she spoke, a clamor arose from the garden that must be just on the other side of them. Mirian could hear things breaking and what sounded like her father yelling. Part of her wanted to rush to her father's aid, but she wasn't sure she was ready to face the rest of the tour group again. Besides, she trusted Edrys to protect her family, and being nearly alone in this garden was probably going to be the last bit of peace she'd have in a long while.

Neveyn Ire

22 :: Feminine :: Empire Servant :: § :: Mentions: Mirian [dir] Kaz [ind]

Curse this absurdly large castle. She was heading in the direction of chatter but found herself in an empty garden. A garden that was surprisingly on a smaller scale for being in such a massive castle. She had come a decent way from the library and found herself meandering about. The opposite of what she set out to do.

Stop wandering about like some sitting duck. Focus Nev. Focus.

Curiosity peaked when she spotted a species of flower that often sprouted in Thrande's mountainous regions.

Focus...

Focus...

Focus...

The well-advised voice got smaller as she neared the small patch of flowers that sprouted a couple of feet from the ground. Their vibrant violet colors captured Neveyn’s attention.

The way its petals would curve about was hypnotizing. It was nostalgic. The smell they gave off was singled out by Neveyn’s nose. It was the same aroma than lingered around her brother, Erik. The aroma reminded her of his soft laughter, his pitchy voice that he could never control.

Red-fringed flowers in her peripheral reminded her of Erik’s auburn hair. Their jade stems were the same color as his eyes, which would always bring a smile to Neveyn’s face. Her heart yearned for her only surviving family member to be near her. She just wanted to hear his voice. To see his fair skin unblemished, though she knew it wouldn’t be. It’s been a while since the Empire put him to work in Thrande’s mines. His skin is probably paler than Neveyn’s, which would seem impossible. His eyes, which were once bright and full of color, were probably dulled down to a lifeless hue. That heartwarming smile of his- twisted into an abused frown. His freckled cheeks likely bore purple hues. The more she thought of her brother, the more abnormal he looked.

The image that Neveyn created of her torn-up brother made a lump rise in her throat. her throat burned.

He’s suffering while you’re staring at a bunch of flowers.

Neveyn snapped back out of it, refusing to look at the enticing colors of the flowers as she rose to her full height, which wasn’t much. When she turned around, she spotted a figure. A figure that was generously taller than her own, and oddly familiar. Neveyn was startled to see the woman was accompanied by a small posse of soldiers.

She hadn’t even heard them enter.

She felt the woman glance at her, though she couldn’t spot her eyes given the mask that the woman wore shadowed them.

A deep, familiar, monotone voice erupted in the silence when the woman spoke.

Immediately, Neveyn recognized it.

Princess Mirian Orianna Thezmaer.

She wasn’t surprised that the princess didn’t recognize her. Every time Neveyn passed by her, she was sticking to the walls of the Orin castle as if her life depended on it. She’d curtsy in her presence and keep her gaze focused on the floor out of respect, so she wouldn’t have seen if Mirian looked at her. Though she had passed by Mirian a number of times, the two never talked with each other. Perhaps Neveyn could use that to her advantage.

Her voice would be foreign to Mirian- that is unless Mirian eavesdropped on her parent’s meetings.

Neveyn tried to think back on the times she reported to their majesties. She would always be accompanied by a guard, so as to provide fluent passage through the castle. She always stuck to the shadow of her escorts, she was nothing in Orin’s dark halls. Whenever she did relay information to the King or Queen, sometimes both, their rooms were empty. They never had their children in the same room as Neveyn.

Nev recalled Queen Moriah’s words.

The fewer people who know about you, the better.

She should keep her identity from Mirian, then, right?

If not Mirian, then from her company, at the least.

Despite this, Neveyn felt her knees begin to buckle purely out of the habit of curtsying to Orinian royalty. She managed to refrain from continuing when she caught herself in the act.

Her eyes were trained on the floor, but she sneakily brought them up to examine the princess and her company. There was a guard and… a squire, she presumed. She didn’t recognize either of them, so they likely didn’t recognize her either. Her eyes trained on the princess, who was adorned in her masquerade outfit. The woman was exceptionally beautiful, much like her brother and sister. On the paler end, much like most of those who live in Orin. She looked a lot like her mother, in some ways. Neveyn could definitely see the resemblance, even through the mask.

She only realized that she was staring when the princess looked at her. Now that she had made contact with Mirian’s pale brown eyes, she could see the question bubbling in them.

She doesn’t know who you are. Not yet.

Feign ignorance if she asks.

If she’s near, then that means their majesties are near.

Find their chambers, then report to them at night.

That’s your goal, Neveyn. Don’t fail yourself.

Neveyn forced whatever expression she could as she looked the princess over, who was walking toward her. In a matter of time, the distance between the two closed drastically. Nev could feel her pulse start to rise. She tensed up for a moment before reminding herself.

Calm down. This isn’t the empire.

Neveyn rolled her shoulders back, making a similar posture to the nobles that she passed by in the long halls of Kagha’s castle.

'Good Evening.'

Neveyn locked eyes with Mirian, even though she wanted to keep her gaze strained on the floor beneath her feet. Feign ignorance. As far as you know, she’s just a noble. Just like you. Similar ranking, the same hierarchy.

Speak. Speak Nev, do it.

Neveyn processed Mirian’s words.

Don’t hesitate.

Her throat tightened.

Say something. Now.

“Good Evening,” Was it weird to repeat the exact same greeting? She hadn’t talked to actual nobility in months. Her voice was light due to the nerves that pulsed through her. One who hadn’t heard her before would just think she had a very feminine voice, which, she hoped Mirian would fall into.

'This may sound odd, but I swear I know you from somewhere.'

The words made her gut twist into itself, but Neveyn tried to remain ignorant to such feelings.

She tilted her head ever so slightly to show her feigned confusion at the words. Neveyn opened her mouth as if to speak, but stopped herself when Mirian formally introduced herself.

Don’t ask who I am. Don’t ask who I am. Don’t ask who I am.

'And you are?'

Fuuuuck. Neveyn mentally groaned. She felt like she was a terrible liar. Come on, Nev, you managed to convince that guard, surely you can convince the princess.

Wait, I technically just found out that she was the princess. That means I should bow, right?

Neveyn curtsied to the woman, glancing at her feet, then back up to her eyes.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, your highness,” Her tone started to dull into its usual flat chorus when she started to get more comfortable. As long as her brain was being distracted by forming words, she wouldn’t be able to overthink everything and make herself anxious.

Alright. Good job. You didn't curl into a pathetic ball, well done.

Now, you can’t ignore her question.

“Wouldn’t that ruin the purpose of a masquerade ball, your highness?” Shit. Did that sound condescending? Don’t overthink it, just keep going. Scrape up whatever charm you’ve got left.

“I’m often mistaken for many people in the kingdoms. Especially Frain, but Orin is a new one,” Neveyn let out a soft, convincing chuckle that she didn’t know she was capable of forming. For a moment, she questioned just how genuine it was. She was mistaken for being from Frain, which she used to her advantage.

“I guess the eyes just gravitate toward the red hair,” Neveyn continued, acting as though she was feeling chatty. She simply didn’t want to linger on any of her words long enough to give herself time to twist whatever she said around in her head, as one would do when roasting a rabbit.

Change the subject, Nev.

“I came here to check out one of the many gardens that this place is advertised to have… I suppose you were also attracted to the rumors. I hear the best garden is near the heart of the castle, often addressed as the Royal Garden.” She looked about the place, a smile forcing its way to the edge of her full lips.

That's a better excuse than admitting you got lost, at least.

Now get out of here.

“I suppose I’ve lingered around here long enough. I should go, after all, I did come for the ball,” Too many words. I should’ve kept it short and sweet.

Just go.

Neveyn bent herself into a farewell curtsy, yet didn’t move. She hesitated.

“Would you like to accompany me to the ball?”

Damn it. You’re getting too cocky. Neveyn pushed the quarreling thoughts to the back of her head as she looked the princess in her pale eyes, awaiting an answer.

Nikolas A. Venturi | 55 | M | King | Kagha | Mentions: Kinga

Nikolas had never been much of a dancer, but between reflexes honed on the field of battle and decades of marriage he could anticipate his wife’s movements as easily as his own. With her warm hands clasped in his, the rest of the world faded away and they were simply two people dancing as close as could be. They flowed through the rooms of Kinga’s apartment, totally in sync despite the lack of music. Nikolas twirled his queen and admired the silver waves of her hair, flying like a sheet of liquid mercury through the air. Despite their age, they danced as rapidly and passionately as any youth might, hitting the steps of the traditional Kaghan dances with such accuracy the rhythm might have been ingrained in their minds and hearts. As one, they glided to a stop, Nikolas releasing his wife’s hands to bring his to the sides of her face.

“No matter what happens, I trust your decisions tonight, just as you have trusted mine in battles past.” His voice was low, the words just for her even in a room where they appeared to be alone. Dancing with Kinga had calmed his fears, just as they always had before. Nikolas had seen his queen in action before, and the faith he had in her was nigh unshakeable. His thumb traced her lower lip, and he carefully placed a quick kiss to her forehead before stepping back to create some space between them. The moment of intimacy was over, and Nikolas knew it was time for them to don not just their masquerade masks, but the ones they wore every day in court. He slid the lion mask back down over his face and took the crown off of his wrist before settling it onto his head. Nikolas allowed himself one last wink at his wife before deliberately tipping the crown askew and walking over to the doors that led to the hallway.

“GUARDS! The queen and I are ready to attend the ball, we require an escort at once!” The words echoed down the hallway, which was mostly empty as the majority of the servants and guards were stationed in and around the ballroom. The few sets of guards stationed immediately jumped to attention, deciding amongst themselves in mere seconds who should make up the escort and who would remain to guard the royals' private chambers. Secretly Nikolas was satisfied at their practiced response, but he’d never let them know that. Can’t let them get complacent, he reasoned to himself. After all, there’s always room for improvement. Nikolas waited for his wife to follow him, counting on her to fix his crooked crown before they made their grand entrance. It was a source of amusement for him to pretend to forget how tall he was, affecting a puzzled air whenever Kinga tried to explain or motion for him to bend down so she could reach. Nikolas could already feel a grin spreading across his face at the thought of it. “Our escort is ready my dear,” he called back through the door. “Though it took them long enough.” he stage-whispered, voice clearly carrying to the guards and into Kinga’s rooms. Although Nikolas wasn’t exactly sure how Kinga wanted him to act tonight, he contented himself with a promise to follow her lead and heed any instructions she might give to him.

Basil | Male | 19 | Servant

Mentions: Everyone at the gardens

Too many voices were rattling in his ears, and they were confusing the poor man. His eye rapidly switches between the faceless figures. Their voices were barely audible as they communicated with him. His hands shot to his ears and massaged them just in case they were clogged.

No, they were fine. Everything was fine.

His eye turned to the blue one, and his sense of relief washed away. Never mind, everything was shit. Especially that woman, she's utter shit. Basil's lips thin in displeasure at the sight of those eyes. He was resisting the urge to pluck them out. Though an idea went through his head, he slowly stood on his feet. Step by step, he approached the pinned woman. He crouches, takes the dagger, and forces it out of the ground.

"I hope rats feast on your pitiful body, you she-devil." He hissed with clenched teeth. A hypocrite for someone that has the eye of a demon as we speak.

"This is a splendid Rosa Peace, one of my favorites other than Rosa x Damascena. It’d be a shame to let it die with its brethren. Perhaps you could replant it and let it live?” An unfamiliar voice made its way into his head. He could feel some anger wash away at the name of a flower. Basil approaches the faceless figure. Steadily, the appearance of the stranger comes into place. Yes, he can finally see who this stranger is. The faceless strangers standing over him were coming into place-he can see familiar faces amongst them. Basil cups the man's hand holding the flower, and he gazes at it with sorrow in his eye. "Keep it. As an apology for the way I acted in front of you."

His face falls, "It's the least I can do after embarrassing the royal families here." Shaking his head, keeping his eyes on the ground.

That's until he hears a voice, and oh boy, it's filled with disappointment.

"Basil," his name made his mouth dry, "I expected more from you. You of all people should know the work that has been put into this event. Clean yourself up and come back to the ball when you’ve gathered your thoughts. You are to find me after the ball to discuss your future in this kingdom"

Basil adverts his gaze as he dares not look at anyone. His fingers fumbled together, his blood now on both hands. He did look at Zach. Only to see his eyes didn't match his cold words. Basil didn't speak with him. He didn't dare to do it.

His mouth parts, only to shut as no words left him. "I'm sorry, Prince Zacharius. I didn't mean to cause a scene." His voice was meek-submissive. Guess this is what happens if you get too friendly with royals. You lose your shit. "I'll work extra hard for the garden restored to its original state."

He made a fool out of everyone here. He made a fool out of the royals.

Indeed, the King and Queen wouldn't be pleased. They would not. Basil pinched the bridge of his nose, yet the smell of blood quickly changed the position of his hand.

Julia stood in shock during the whole thing. She returns from the planet of 'What the Fuck' in time to see that Basil has gained his senses. She clears her throat, stepping toward the group awkwardly.

"Your Majesties, I also apologize for what happened. I should've stopped him." She kept her eyes down but grabbed onto Basil's wrist once she was near. Nudging him in the direction of the castle, "Go to your room. I'll be there to speak with you in a minute." Basil does so and hurries off to his room to calm down.

Basil has become the selfish one. He sees it clear as day now.

That's when Julia approaches the prince, eyeing the king on his back. "I apologize once more," she whispered, "he's been acting weird since yesterday. I've been trying to get him to talk, but he didn't want to tell anyone."

After saying that, she rushed off after Basil. She sighs as she sees the man sheepishly wander down the hall to his room. She increased her galloping pace until she was at his side. Basil pulls away, looking afraid of her. He calms down, but it's uncomfortable for them both. Being around each other was uncomfortable.

"Basil. What happened?" Cautiously Julia pries into the man's eventful interactions with the people in the gardens. Basil shakes his head. Unsure if he wanted to tell her. Finally arriving at their destination. Julia closed the door behind him, and Basil sat on his bed.

"You gotta say something, at least." She's begging him to speak up about what happened, but Basil holds his lips for a couple of seconds before speaking.

"It was scary," shyly his words came, "I didn't remember anyone there. To me, they were strangers. Faceless strangers." She was silent as she allowed him to speak and prepped herself to clean Basil's wounds. "I was so angry, but I don't know why. I wanted to hurt someone, Julia. What if," he cuts himself out, "what if I hurt Mircea, Zak, or Kris? What would've happened if I killed them?"

Tears in his eye, Julia sighs and opens the door a crack, "Can someone fetch me a bowl of water?" She calls out softly before returning to Basil.

"Everything was like Hell. The flowers I adored were blurry, and I was scared of going near them except for that one bush I approached. The gardens I loved so much felt like a battlefield. I was too set on my anger. Too set on wanting to kill someone." Julia's eyes held concern for her friend as her fingers raked through his golden hair.

"Everyone gets angry, Basil. That's a natural human thing to go through." She joined in on the conversation, yet her friend expressed doubt.

"No, that anger wasn't normal. None of the things I did were," Basil pushed Julia's wrist and pulled her fingers out of his hair. "Damn it, Julia! What kind of anger wanted me to kill my friends! What kind of rage did I go through where I don't even realize the faces of the people I deeply love." He shouted, but Julia wasn't offended. The reason why is that his loud voice held grief and fear.

Julia has no clue what level of anger he went through. Still, she was sad about it as that experience truly terrified Basil. "Did you not notice the pain or the smell of your blood?" He shakes his head. Then a knock came at the door.

Julia opened it to see a servant standing there with the bowl of water she asked. She took it and made sure to thank them before they hurried off. She sets the bowl on the table and dips it in the bowl to soak the cloth so she can clean his wound, "No. I noticed none of those." Now Julia was worried and afraid. How did he not notice those two things? They're something he fears to the very core. "As I said before, I was too set on wanting to kill someone."

Julia walks over, grabs his hand, and cleans it off. Gently she dabs the cloths onto his hands, wiping the dirt and blood off them. "Hmm, I'll be willing to figure out your outburst. Anger is normal, but what you described wasn't."

Basil sighs, watching her clean off his hands. "What'd you think they're discussing about me? Will I be banished from this kingdom?" His heart was racing, and the man's tears poured out.

"Heavens no! They adore you, Basil. I'm sure they noticed that something was wrong with you." She chuckles, placing a hand on his cheek for a couple of seconds before focusing on her work. "It was also your first time drinking."

Basil's cheeks flushed, "Shush! I thought it was juice."

"Honestly, Basil. Why in the world would they serve juice at an event?" Basil went quiet. His red face has gotten worse. She could feel it, the Moon had set, and the Sun was starting to rise.

The room felt warm and comforting, with the chilling air now fading. Julia can breathe around him now. Should could talk to him without fear. It felt nice to be able to speak with him again. To be able to be near him. Basil doesn't know this, or he does know, but he's the Kingdom of Kagha's Sun of Joy. Without him, everything about this place would be dreadful.

Her arms wrapped around Basil, pulling him into a comforting hug. "I'm here if you need an available ear. Sadly, I have to continue working." She tosses the dirtied cloth into the bowl and carries it out. Basil watches her leave, his eyes holding sadness that his source of comfort left.

Now, he's terrified of the conversation he'll be having soon with Zak and Mir. Oh, god. If Salen catches wind of this, he's a dead man. Correction, if Salen gets word of that event Zak, Mircea, and Kris will suffer her wrath. Not only will they be sharing a castle, but a grave as well.

Here Lies Basil.

Dead by her serpent-like gaze and mouth of fire.

It's the Devil you shouldn't fear, but the wrath of Kagha's Princess.

P.s Mir, Zak, and Kris are down here too. We were hoping for a pyramid.

He grew pale at the daydream of his shared tombstone with the others. Basil hopes Zak and Mir won't be spooning each other in the grave. As much as he loves those two, there's a limit on when and where. A coffin shared by four people isn't one of them.
