the former alpha male didn't have a mate ya'll nor did he have offspring. so because of blood, she would've been the next heir per se rather than an 'alpha male' position given to a female. she would've chosen a male to make alpha male had she had recieved her rightful spot. the former alpha male a) didn't choose a mate as he was stressed or b) simply didn't have interest. regardless, the spot still would've been hers regardless of sex ^^
hope that clears it up a bit lol
edit: the former beta male wouldn't have taken it because a living blood relative was there |

There wasn't a current female, that is why she was supposed to take charge if the alpha male did have a mate she'd have taken over, yes |
