You find yourself weaving through the back alleys of the old city, where crooked buildings lean in close like they’re whispering secrets. The smell of baking bread drifts from a distant bakery window, but down here, it’s mostly brick dust, damp concrete, and the faint scent of something wild.

Rusty fire escapes crisscross above your head, casting shadows across peeling posters and faded murals. Somewhere in the distance, a cat yowls. Sharp, echoing, and then it’s quiet again.

You’ve heard rumors about the alley cats here. That some of them don’t want to be found. That some only come when they choose you.

As you tuck your hands into your pockets and glance around, you consider your next move:

1. Follow the sound of clinking metal—someone seems to be working further down the alley, and you spot a cluttered workbench set up beside a garage door left slightly ajar. Maybe they know where the cats gather.

2. Climb the creaky fire escape—a narrow stairway leads up the side of a building toward a sun-warmed rooftop. Could be a perfect perch for a watchful stray… or just a better view of the maze below.

3. Slip through the broken gate into what looks like an abandoned courtyard garden. Overgrown vines creep up the walls and between the paving stones, and something about it feels… still. Like it’s been waiting for someone.

Where will you start?

You pause, unsure if she expects something from you.. but the grey cat simply watches, regal and unbothered, as you back toward the door once more.

The bell jingles again as you step outside into the fading light of the alley. The city hums faintly around you, muffled by the worn brick walls and the hush that seems to linger here like a spell.

Then, squeak.

Barely a whisper of a sound, so soft it could’ve been the wind. But there it is again: a faint, high-pitched mew.

You turn, ears pricked, and follow it down the alley, past overturned crates and a cracked flowerpot spilling weeds. The noise leads you to a sagging cardboard box tucked between two bins.

Inside, just visible through a tear in the side, are two wide, worried eyes blinking up at you. A kitten, is curled into the corner, trying to make itself small. Its fur is a dusty cream color, and its tail twitches nervously with each passing second.

It lets out another tiny squeak when you crouch nearby.

From behind you, the older grey cat watches in silence from her perch on the windowsill, tail flicking.

The little tom eventually slips from your lap, stretching with a satisfied yawn before scampering off after a gull shadow dancing along the dunes. You watch him disappear into the tall grasses, the last flick of his tail vanishing behind a weathered log.

With a smile, you brush the sand from your hands and rise to your feet, wandering further down the shore.

You pause by a cluster of tidepools, crouching to peer at the darting shapes within: tiny fish, a crab mid-scuttle, the glint of a lost bottlecap. A soft sound pulls your attention, a faint scrabble of paws behind a nearby rock.

When you round the edge, you spot him.

Another cat, slightly older than the first. He’s crouched half in shadow, watching you with narrowed eyes, still but not fearful. His fur is tousled by sea breeze, a smudge of sand on one ear. There’s a wary intelligence to him, like he’s been sizing you up from the moment you arrived.

You crouch down nearby, careful not to press too close.

A fire crackles gently in the hearth, and a golden haze of sunlight pools on a faded rug. The two kittens tumble and chase in the corner, all flicked tails and flying pounces, but your attention is pulled elsewhere.

Near the fireplace, nestled in a plush, well-worn cushion, lies a graceful adult cat. Her eyes are half-lidded, but she’s watching you too.

The woman smiles knowingly. "She’s past the pouncing phase, thank goodness, but she’ll still follow you from room to room if she thinks you need supervision. She adores warm laps, clean windowsills, and people who understand the beauty of quiet company."

As if summoned she stretches elegantly, then rises to pad toward you. A deliberate stroll, ending in a soft mrrow as she brushes against your leg.
