Garvin's trench coat had been a solution to a problem that ended up just becoming a bigger problem. It's really just the patch. The whole reason it's there is because Garvin, 1) Wanted some sort of connection to the pirates, which had been the closest to family he'd gotten by that point. 2) Realized that he was never going to get a tombstone or anything of the like when he died, so giving himself one on his back was the most he'd ever get.

Mostly- It was supposed to solve that second problem. His way of still getting something that shouldn't be possible for him to get. Just a way to stick it to the world and prove to himself that yeah, he's here and he's something.

It ends up doing the opposite.

Haha, honestly- Devery's probably the best to talk to for Kostas. He comes from a family where emotions are literally the center of their abilities, and Dev has plenty of experience in feeling more emotion than he's used to. Of course, his usual coping mechanism is literally using his ability in order to not feel that 'extra' emotion. But uh, yeah.

Irfam will totally allow Kostas to sleep in his lab! Just be careful of the moving walls and disembodied limbs! And Pewter! Be careful of Pewter, Kos! And the dripping acid! Definitely be careful of that!
