Nala

Age ~ 25 (soon to be 26)

Gender ~ Female

Romantic orientation/Sexuality ~ Demiromantic bisexual

Appearance

Standing at a height of 5'6", Nala has a broad-shouldered, plump figure. Her curly black hair reaches her thighs and her russet eyes are framed by thick eyelashes. Seashells and amber beads are woven throughout her hair. Having grown up with no social expectations whether to dress masculine or feminine, she switches between the two.

Personality

She doesn't talk much, preferring to listen and observe. Often, what she thinks about becomes crafted from wood in the shape of curious animals. Her fearless nature has gotten her into trouble more times than she can count and she's often escaped by the skin of her teeth. Both her stealth and her ability to speak multiple languages have helped her navigate political and social waters.

Relationships are slow to form, but her loyalty is strong when someone becomes trustworthy. But if they are proven to be a liar, she has no qualms about cursing them. Her curses are rarely given and even more rarely removed once placed.

History

The Wendhu family is one of mystery, and Nala is no exception. As the youngest of her siblings, she has always striven to be their equals in the things she can do, not in the things she can't. To attempt so would push her too much out of her comfortable space. She has a good relationship with them though she wishes she could see them more often.

To many, she is someone to talk to. To trust, even. She keeps their secrets, and once in a while she will give them one of her own. A small thing, for the price of a tale. A fair bargain though she knows she could demand gold. But she knows what happens if she chooses that path: kingdoms toppled with the right secret whispered in certain ears. Her strong morals will never allow it.

Eleni Matilda Arton

16 - Female - Asexual - The Spitfire

Appearance

Eleni has wavy brown hair with blonde streaks that reaches her shoulders. Her face is round and settled into a natural and unintentional annoyed expression. Her lips are thin and her hooded eyes are electric blue. In summer, her olive skin darkens further.

She stands at a height of 5'6" and her build is muscled and broad shouldered. The clothing she wears is tunics and breeches, although she will occasionally wear gowns during formal events.

Personality

Eleni is brusque, and as stubborn as a mule. When her parents were told their daughter would be slow to walk and talk as a child, Eleni became twice as determined to catch up to as much of a 'normal' skillset as she could (mainly by copying Toby). When they insisted she be a proper princess and acquire suitable interests as she grew older, she refused and slept in the stable hayloft for several nights. Now, she has gained quite the reputation for being a wild child. Buried deep is a part of her that wants any love and affection her parents throw her way, but she feels that only happens when they finally notice her mischievous and reckless behaviour. Although she isn't as much of a drama queen as Eugene is, Eleni strays rather close to it at times.

She can come across as tempestuous and unpredictable - but surprisingly, is not quite as fiery-tempered as some of her Arton ancestors. There is also a side of her that enjoys diplomacy and decision-making. She can multitask, but only up to a point before she becomes burnt out.

The face she shows to the royal court and nobles is that of an extremely vibrant, talkative, and enthusiastic nature. In reality, she only acts like this when she is ordered to show up to events her parents refuse to let her miss. Outside of these occurrences, she is quiet and observant. Furthermore, she doesn't talk much, preferring to let others take charge of the conversation. It's partly innate, and partly because she worries she'll be ridiculed for not being able to speak as well as her siblings because that ability happened to arrive later for her than most children.

Strengths

Her skills in archery and equestrian sports of all kinds are passions she's honed since she was old enough to learn them. She's also picked up how to handle and wield daggers and other knives.

She can find and remember even the smallest loopholes in people's words, if she can be bothered to. If they don't make what they say clear as a bell, well, it's not her fault if she takes things in a completely different direction than what they mean, is it?

She picks up on details others are likely to miss: the subtle shifts in posture and expression, things overheard in conversation that she can mention to win someone's favour, etc.

Her loyalty to her kingdom is strong, as is her faith in her brother to be a peaceful king when his time comes to rule. Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

Weaknesses

As Eleni has 'inherited' the (in)famous intensity of her family, she is swift to retaliate if she perceives an insult towards her and her siblings. Unfortunately, this can backfire, and has in the past, rather dramatically a few times.

Anything that even remotely ties into her interests means she focuses on those things rather than any manners or etiquette befitting the spare heir to the Arton throne.

She heavily dislikes being told not to do or say something. Even if it puts her in grave danger, she will do it if given the slightest leeway.

She can't sit in a chair or stand still for too long as her legs become stiff rather quickly. This, alongside her ability to sit in W shape and having little feeling in her fingertips, is very similar to cerebral palsy. She also tires (not that she'll freely admit it) and involuntarily startles easily. This irritating and embarrassing reflex is something Eugene takes into account when he plays pranks on her.

Relationships with her siblings

Tobias

She gets along the best with her older brother, and calls him Toby. He doesn't mind her mischievous side as much as their parents do. In fact, he (mostly) goes with whatever she has to and/or plans to do. It is something that has only increased her more reckless ideas over the years - as long as neither he nor Aiyana are put in danger. However, as of late, she refuses to involve him in this hobby of hers.

Aiyana

The two girls get along; perhaps not to the extent Eleni and Toby do, but their bond is somewhat close. As the older sister, Eleni tries to support Aiyana as much as she can, and feels guilty when she can't.

Eugene

Eleni and Eugene don't get along, to say the least. Even being in the same room together will have the siblings arguing heatedly within minutes and trying to win a battle over the other with the last word.

Reputation/Rumours about said character

There are a few rumours surrounding Eleni, the first and major one being that she plots to take over her brother's position as heir, and bring ruin to the kingdom when she succeeds, like an evil queen. Which, no thank you, but it's oddly persistent?

She once cursed a noble to die after his dull prattling became too much for her. This one is probably exaggerated, but there might be a bit of truth to it.

There is speculation that she can hold her breath underwater for nine days and nights. It's one of the more ridiculous ones, and she enjoys hearing it.

About the character

Known for her temper and interest in equestrian sports, archery, and knives, Eleni isn't exactly the princess one would expect. She's not afraid to get dirty or use plenty of language unbefitting of a princess. Very much a wild child in all aspects, she seems to be rebelling from all that she has been taught.

Amelia

The Cartographer

Gender: Female

Age: 35

Sexuality: Pansexual

~

Personality

At first glance, she appears to live and breathe the role she has like any actor on stage. She draws maps that follow the Queen's orders. She has an obsession with detail - especially the small things - and mostly consistent things like numbers and landscape scaling. She even locks herself in the map room most days and nights to escape anyone's company. She's soft spoken and polite.

Most of the assumptions about her are true in a way.

In reality, gruff and no-nonsense are the main words used to describe her. Having had to make her own way into the bright and fast paced world from a young age has made Amelia wary of and emotionally closed off to most people. Call it her trust burned to ashes once too many times. Call it intuition. Either way she is slow to warm up to others, unless someone is that rare person who she immediately takes a liking to. Then she engages with enthusiasm like there's no tomorrow. Dogs also produce a similar (and far more readily) response. But she will never admit it.

Appearance

A slender and tall woman, Amelia's mahogany hair falls in curls down to her shoulders. Her skin is a medium brown, dotted with many scars. The clothes she wears are similar to the city's people, allowing her to blend in with them. How successful she is varies from day to day, but as long as she can get away from her duties for a little while, she will. That is, until the Queen summons Amelia back.

Her hands are perpetually stained with ink no matter how hard she tries to keep them clean. She carries several scrolls everywhere she goes in a leather satchel, and just as many styluses, quills, and inkwells in pouches tied to her belt.

Background

Amelia was raised by Philip and Madeleine, a master glassmaker and a scholar respectively. It is all that can be found of her history, recorded somewhere about those who work for the Queen. Information easily skipped over and forgotten.

And that is how she prefers it.

Only a few people know that Amelia descends from a long line of barterers, with some exceptions. Those who are still living and have kept quiet, anyway. As for the ones who let it slip.. Well. They've mysteriously disappeared.

But before her parents became well known and somewhat wealthy, Amelia was a bright-eyed toddler whose curiosity was - and still is - insatiable. As soon as she could walk, she chose to run instead. Hide and seek became her favourite game, and she hid well. In the places not many other children explored or that were abandoned for whatever reason, she would find treasures that delighted and intrigued her. A string of decorated and mismatched beads. Fragments of written on parchment, the edges blackened by fire. It was always things she easily carried back home and stashed in a dark corner.

Those happy, carefree days are long gone. Although she never lacked for love and affection when very small, as money poured in and grew and grew, her parents busied themselves more with their work rather than pay attention to their only child. Madeleine sought out every piece of knowledge she could find. Philip expanded his occupation from working plain glass to colourful glass of all shapes and sizes.

Amelia turned to the two things she felt she had left: throwing herself into learning the Varosi landscape any way she could and the little quirks of the kingdom's various dialects - apart from one. That one, she scraped her natural accent of it away and (mostly) replaced it with the Trenwitch accent to better fit in. However, on rare occasions, she slips back into it. But never for long, perhaps a few words here and there if you're lucky to overhear them.

Reputation

There are quite a few rumours about her; the ones mentioned are simply the most common. She has been seen enough times in Ransburrow that there is speculation that she visits its gambling district. Some say she can outrun even the fastest horse in the Queen's stables. Others say she was born and raised in Ke'nihia - she rarely speaks of the small city.

Orion

Age ⇰ Twenty

Gender ⇰ Male

Sexuality ⇰ Bisexual

Appearance/Personality

In the rough terrain of Orion's home, where mountains climb up to the sky and are merciless if animal or human let their feet slip, the native ponies are revered and feared. They have a gentle and intelligent nature but with one kick they can kill in a heartbeat. The locals say that should one allow itself to be tamed and is treated well, the person has Lady Luck on their side until the spectre of Death comes to call their spirit away.

With his stocky frame and birdlike movements, Orion has long been associated with these hardy animals. At first glance, he seems unassuming. However, like the ponies, he always finds a way to surprise.

His rage has steadily built through the years like lava in a volcano. Being a soldier in the ruthless Athari army has made him wear cold as armour and hone wrath as a weapon. He still has kindness, but it's buried deep.

Orion's wavy black hair falls to his mid-back, and his dark skin always has a slight sheen as if he stayed under the sun as a babe just a little too long and the light never quite left it. His eyes are wide, deep pools of brown leaves that fall when the harvest begins. Scars and other blemishes have created a jagged tapestry of his youth on his body.

History

The Athari came when he was eight years old. At first the strange men seemed peaceful and willing to work with them. Then, the battalion arrived when the townspeople finally let their guard down. They took over after many bloodsoaked fights; an iron bear that didn't stop until the town was beaten down and cowering.

He learned to leap over ravines; climb rocks that could topple in the blink of an eye and crush him; and run over the moorland terrain and never miss his footing. And, as the conflict increased, the other children joined him. Everyone went home only when the sun slowly began sinking down into the horizon.

Some of the soldiers seemed nice enough. But he noticed others watching his friends and acquaintances as if they were choosing which children to force into their army when they were old enough. As he grew older, he turned to what his grandmothers taught him: poisons and magic. His great-grandfather, hoary-headed and the most powerful of the cunning folk, disappeared beneath the lake one night.

But his family always never quite fit in. There was a light in his father's eyes, of something otherworldly and terrifying primal rage. His other parent worked on the injured, their movements like water. Their gaze was steady and calculating like the spider making its web.

The final insult came when children were beaten if they spoke their language and were forced to take new names. Adults, too, sometimes to the point of having fits of rage long after. They were only allowed scraps of their culture and religion, and even those they had to hide. The cunning folk either fled to safer places or were executed.

He learned everything he could, and when the battalion left, he went with them. He rose through the ranks until he was semi-important. As a soldier, anyway. Higher still, and his loyalty would be questioned.

He's kept his name although he chafes to reclaim his original and shake off the final ties to his enemy.

Now he has been sent along with the rest of the battalion to reclaim one of the Jin Isle villages. He might escape and finally get his revenge, but not in the way he has dared to hope.

Nia Garn

Age: 28

Gender: Female

Sexuality: ?

<><>

Appearance

Nia stands at a height of 5'4" with a pear-shaped figure. She has olive skin, tawny eyes, and chestnut brown curly hair that is always in a braid. Freckles dot her cheeks and nose. She also wears hearing aids in both ears.

The clothing she wears varies from day to day. Sometimes it's a suit. Other times it's a floral-patterned shirt off of one shoulder, a cardigan, and a long skirt. Her footwear is always boots - they're easier to walk and run in than high heels.

Personality

Nia has been called a social butterfly many times - and it's true she enjoys interacting with people. She likes to converse and laugh, but only with those who truly capture her interest. She doesn't know why, although she's tried to figure it out over and over. Perhaps she has a knack for finding people who share a similar quirky sense of humour, or a gut feeling they're kindred spirits in some way. They could even be complete opposites and still Nia would be drawn to them. However, there is something to keep in mind: her innermost circle of friends are the ones who have stuck by her through thick and thin - and it's an extremely small number. Anyone else is kept at arm's length. But that is not to say someone can't gain her trust eventually. It just.. can take a while. Years, even.

Her stubborness is her greatest strength - and it is also her greatest weakness. Standing up for herself or others is no issue, but she can be blinded by her own way of doing things and not think about anyone else's.

She also has an even keel mind. Very few things faze the woman. She's had encounters with the strangest of people throughout her life - so much so that she tends to under react when faced with another odd person or occurrence. Or not react at all; that's caused issues in the past, and it's something she's still trying to work out. It's difficult for her to know the balance.
