There's such a great art team, I can't imagine they would ever use AI art on a site that encourages so much art trading/selling

She didn't have any trust in soldiers, especially German soldiers. Not after seeing how they treat others. They didn't care about her mother, they didn't care when the building caught on fire, they didn't care about pretty much anything. Well, besides themselves. She wondered if they would even fight for Germany if it didn't have incentives. If it didn't make themselves popular.

She wasn't sure if Americans were any different though. They walked around with superiority. They always took food and a lot of it. They didn't seem to care much about German resources dying out or the German civilians. They mostly just stood and watched for suspicious activity. But yet, they ate like they had been starving for years. She had even heard some complain about the food, showers, and water right in front of her. They were ungrateful and probably drank the night away too. They were also always boasting about American pride. It got annoying.

But maybe Daemon could be the one exception to her hate. She wasn't sure how to feel about him. He had the arrogance and pride like a soldier but that was generated by his own self-pride and not the pride of his status. She hadn't seen him drinking on the job and each time she looked into his eyes, they were clear and focused. He was probably not spending all his time drinking away like the German soldiers. Not to be mistaken, she never had a problem with drinking. It was borderline alcoholism that she had a problem with.

“I would consider myself stupid if I were to waste just as much money as they do on Jägermeister. That’s just because I have better taste compared to what they’re downing though.”

She raised an eyebrow toward him with surprise. She had not met a single person who didn't enjoy the popular German drink. She couldn't really make a comment on it, she had never had it. Or any drink really.

She smirked lightly about the comment he made toward her calling his almost thank yous cute. She did make a mental note of that but decided not to tease the American soldier further.

She did enjoy the conversation, she hadn't talked with anyone for equally as long. She surprised herself earlier by even being able to speak. Nobody really talked with her, she was an outsider. She still spent her free time reading her German to English book though. She had spent her time practicing the language to not forget it. It was the only possession of hers that she really had left. Well that and a golden locket with a picture of her mother and her. She kept it in her boots to guarantee that it wouldn't be stolen. Gold jewelry was a high price luxury these days. Somehow her boots were the only item on her body that wasn't falling apart. There were scratches on the leather and a few bullet holes but that was it.

As the conversation grew more serious, she had instinctively focused her gaze to the area around them. She was watching out for any signs of trouble. Contrary to her looks, she did know how to fight. She had learned it with a few other civilians during the beginning of the war. Those few other civilians she was pretty sure they either became soldiers or died. She also learned to be very cautious and to never let her gaurd down. However, if she had joined the chaos of the war, she saw herself being a medic more than anything. Medics were under-appreciated and didn't have soldier status benefits but it would still be a step up from her current status. However, she wouldn't be able to leave behind bloodied bodies of the "enemy" soldiers which is why she stayed a civilian and her status in society continued to experience a downfall.

“What’s stopping you from stealing for yourself? If that’s the label you’re stuck with, I don’t see why you don’t just embrace it. If I were in your shoes, I’d pride myself in becoming the most renown homeless robber on the streets of Berlin.”

She glanced at him and gave a half-heartened shrug. She did know the answer in her head but if he couldn't guess the answer then he was more of a fool than she thought. Fear was one thing; with crimes being the same punishment regardless of what crime was committed. There was just a lot of factors that played into it.

"You alone will be the death of you." she paused, her gaze finding where the moonlight shown into his at his mutters.

“You can’t pick and choose who lives, you don’t steal as much as I’m sure you probably could… I just don’t understand if it’s a set of morals you carry that’s truly stopping you, or if you’re afraid to find out what you’re capable of doing and becoming as a person.”

Her gaze went from his to the ground, feeling uncomfortable at his words. Apparently why she did things were more transparent as she thought they were. His words hit deeper than she realized. Thinking about it more, she couldn't even decide herself what was stopping her. She had always thought it was morals but now...she wasn't quite sure.

The smell of smoke caused her to look back up and she noticed that they were at his post, right next to the American food campsite. The building was nothing but ash and a few flames that had resparked. There was nobody in sight, not even a German soldier. Water was limited, they wouldn't have tried wasting it on a wooden structure. They probably didn't even bother to look for ashes. The flames had been so severe that anyone who wanted to escape, would have done so within 5 minutes. Any time past that, they were goners.

"This city used to be so beautiful. I wish you could have seen in then versus now," She sighed, studying the building and the area around it.

For certain, Daemon trusted his American brothers and sisters in arms. Most were better in terms of moralities, fellowship, and righteousness than he was. And some -to Dae’s surprise- were far worse than he could ever dream of being. But regardless they were reliable to a certain degree in his eyes. And for someone with such a warped sense of what the definition of ‘family’ is, Daemon could consider his fellow soldiers as legitimate family.

German soldiers though, they were their own breed. At least there are a plethora of Americans that would fight to death for America for the sole reason of being a devout patriot. Daemon isn’t exactly a hardened patriot, but at least he isn’t fighting a war to reap benefits. Well, maybe a few benefits. The pay is nice as well, but benefits and pay aren’t the sole reason he’s a soldier. It was more of a familial calling to follow in his father’s footsteps into the military at a young age, and so here he is.

Seeing her faint smirk after her ‘cute’ comment, and his reaction, it was safe to say he regretted reacting so honestly. If Daemon was lucky, he’d never see Illianna again, and therefore she couldn’t weaponize compliments such as ‘cute’. It seemed more likely that after tonight they would part ways for good anyway, so he was fairly confident that the few things they’ve learned of each other will be pointless by morning.

And yet if it was all pointless in the end, why did he bother to upkeep this conversational charade? To humor himself? To pass time? He had to give it to the German woman though; she was intriguing at best in her own right. And at worst, Illiana was only a subtle annoyance to the American soldier. All things considered, Daemon decided that he was pursuing conversation because, why not?

The semblance of the shrug she offered him after his inquisition told him enough. Of course, he understood why most wouldn’t dare pursue theft or things of the sort. It was the fear of repercussions. But Daemon didn’t know fear to be an entity that hindered what he did, but he used fear as a motivator. He’s only ever felt truly alive when he’s genuinely terrified, and it was an intoxicating motivator. Fear is exciting, no… exhilarating to Daemon. And so perhaps he just doesn’t understand how no one else can enjoy feeling something like fear as much as he does.

As Illiana’s gaze fell from his at the cease of his speaking, Daemon had difficulty determining what that said about what she was thinking about now. Was she debating how deep her morals truly ran? Was she ashamed of what was potentially really dictating her choices? Or was she just simply, and quietly, disagreeing with everything he had said?

His focus was too harshly trained on breaking down what Illiana was contemplating to realize where they had arrived. As her head lifted to look in the direction of the burned structure, his actions mirrored hers as he did the same. The destruction looked prettier under the moonlit sky than it did under the sun to him. Daemon couldn’t explain it, but there was always a unique essence of beauty present whenever darkness and chaos are both present. While his body language reflected he had no intention to move further from his spot now, Daemon knew he wouldn’t be able to resist poking around in what was left of the ash later. Or who was left perhaps.

"This city used to be so beautiful. I wish you could have seen it then versus now.” Shifting his gaze to her again, Daemon watched her study the scenery for a moment before he sampled a look around for himself. “Yeah, I’m sure this place has seen better days,” he replied. At least he’s seen pictures of Berlin before, so he had an idea of what he was missing. But he knew there was no picture that would amount to seeing Berlin’s former glory in the flesh with his own eyes. He felt that way about California; it may be beautiful in pictures, but there’s nothing that amounts to actually being there.

“Well, once the war is won, Germany might have enough funds to start rebuilding in Berlin since it’s the capital. America and a few other countries will probably pity Germany enough to throw some extra relief money at you guys to jumpstart your economy and general well being as a nation, but it’ll be a slow road to recovery regardless.” Daemon knows from experience in dealing with smaller, war stricken countries. The aftermath is awful. He had intended for what he just said to Illianna to be comforting or hopeful… but now that he was replaying it in his head, it just didn’t come out great. “That was meant to be a positive thing, but it just came out depressing, didn’t it?” Daemon asked with an arched brow as his gaze swiveled back to her. He could have tried to recover by pretending it was an insensitive joke of some sort, but not even he found it very funny. Which definitely said something.

Berlin used to be a city that she could be proud of. Hell, she used to be proud of it. The large skyscraper building, the small businesses that used to cover this area, the friendliness of the other people....Berlin used to be a great city. It was amazing how one little war could wreck everything.

It also drove another question: if Berlin looked like this what about other cities?

Talking about the old Berlin wasn't against the rules but she still kept glancing around and listening for footsteps of drunk German soldiers. The only ones that still found pride in the city was the German soldiers. Tonight though, they were probably harassing her neighborhood. They were probably looking for someone to lash their feelings out. Another burned building made the soldiers even more upset and more likely to drink their problems away. That made the soldiers more dangerous than anything, possibly even their "enemies".

"Well, once the war is won, Germany might have enough funds to start rebuilding in Berlin since it’s the capital. America and a few other countries will probably pity Germany enough to throw some extra relief money at you guys to jumpstart your economy and general well being as a nation, but it’ll be a slow road to recovery regardless.”

Her gaze turned back to him in a rather fast motion. Her eyes narrowed with a little anger. Germany was strong, they would overcome this without help from other countries. She opened her mouth to snap at him about not needing other countries' money or pity but before she even said a word, he spoke again.

"That was meant to be a positive thing, but it just came out depressing, didn’t it?”

"Damn right it did," She couldn't help but let her angry thoughts out. She really just said the first thing on her mind, needing to get it off her chest. Her hand slipped from his and she moved away from him just a little bit more. She took a calming breath and a moment to think.

Illianna supposed Daemon realizing the mistake in his choice of words was something. Cocky arrogant American soldiers weren't supposed to notice when they were being insincere toward other countries. Weren't they only patriotic and prideful of their own to a sense of foolishness? Perhaps what she had always been told about American soldiers wasn't completely true.

"Next time try to think through your words instead of being a fool," She gave him a small smirk, hinting that she was joking with him. In a sense, he was sort of right. She knew that Germany would slowly rebuild and recover. Berlin would be one of the first cities to be repaired. And yes, they would probably take money from other countries. She knew this, even a kid would know this. It just stung the deepest part of her that still had some pride in the Berlin that she once knew.

"And you aren't completely wrong," She added with a small sigh, leaning against the wooden base of an electricity pole that was to the right of her. The city didn't have power anymore but they stil hadn't taken down the poles. Probably in hopes that they could have electricity again and that the war would end soon,"The thing is that we would have to swallow our pride and apologize in order to win. All this bloodshed just leads to more bloodshed. But even a foolish fat cow like yourself knows that an apology will never ever happen from our side. The chancellor is more of a fool than you."

She made sure to keep her voice down. The last part about apologizing would have gotten her beaten if an authority figure was nearby. Critizing any government figure, nonetheless the chancellor himself would most definitely get her beaten. Insulting a government figure was even worse. She jumped at the sound of another gunshot, thinking for a moment that she had been heard and it was somebody firing at her. But the gunshot was still a little distance away. It did sound closer though. Everyday the sound of fighting just got closer. Illianna took another breath, hand resting on her chest to calm down her racing heart.

"Do you think they're going to...make it here?" She questioned, her voice coming off a little shaken from the almost heart attack the last gunshot caused her. She also couldn't find the right words to ask if the opposing side was going to invade what was left of Berlin. It was something she feared every day. A few enemy soldiers getting in and setting off bombs was one thing but a full on attack? Berlin wouldn't survive that. They were barely making it as it is.
