His eyes stayed fixed on her, a mix of curiosity and disbelief swimming within them. His eyebrows raised slightly, betraying a flicker of amusement, or perhaps incredulity.
-
“That’s... ironic,” he murmured at last, the faintest hint of a smirk tugging at the corners of his lips.
-
Those two words were all he could muster, though his mind was a storm of thoughts and emotions. Since he met Josephine, there had been something about her—something that danced just out of reach. A magnetism that felt almost otherworldly. Regal, even. Not in the way one might imagine a queen, with jewels and silks, but something deeper. A presence. An aura. Something he couldn’t quite name.
-
Now, however, the truth had neatly slid into place, confirming his suspicions.
-
“Josephine Rhiannon Hastings?” he echoed, tasting her full name on his tongue like some rare and exotic wine. It felt strange, foreign even, though oddly fitting. His gaze swept over her face, searching for any trace of deception, though he already knew better. “Well, at least you were honest about your first name. I’d hate to think I’ve been complimenting someone who doesn’t exist.”
-
She didn’t respond, and for a moment, silence pooled between them, heavy and contemplative. Anastasia—Ana, as he preferred to think of himself—leaned back in his chair, his expression cooling into one of quiet thoughtfulness. His eyes flicked to the wall, tracing its ornate designs without truly seeing them.
-
What a cruel joke the universe had played, putting the girl he was destined to marry right in front of him—wrapped up in secrecy and coincidence—only to reveal her identity now, just as he had learned the full weight of his responsibilities.
-
His father hadn’t even told him her name. Then again, he hadn’t given his father the chance. He could still hear the echoes of their last conversation, filled with sharp words and stubborn defiance.
-
Yet here she was, Josephine, the girl with the royal name and the quiet smile that unsettled him more than he cared to admit. The girl who had stepped into his life and upended it without even trying. All in just one night.
-
He turned his attention back to her, studying her carefully. After a long pause, he spoke again, his voice softer now, almost subdued. “That’s interesting to know,” he said, the weight of the situation pressing down on him as he continued. “What’s it like for you? Have they pushed many suitors on you before?”
-
He wasn’t sure why he asked. Perhaps it was curiosity. Or perhaps it was something else—something that lingered between the lines of their unspoken connection.

His response drew a half hearted laugh from her lips. It was quite ironic. She had left to escape the person she had been supposed to marry, but instead she found him in the very city she ran away to. And he saved her and brought her to a place of safety without even knowing who she was. It was even funnier to think that when she first saw him, he'd resembled the man of her dreams.

He was different from all the princes she'd met and declined courting. He upheld himself coolly with a sense of confidence that she liked. He hadn't been interested in her for her title or her looks, but because he was a good person. The world had played such a cruel joke on them.

The sound of her name rolling off of his tongue and breaking the silence sent chills down her spine. Even a quiet gasp breathed free from her throat. There was something about the way that he spoke it. It was so odd to hear, but in his voice it was fitting at the same time. She studied him for any hint of anger or resentment, but she never saw anything of the sort. She knew it hadn't been her fault for the way things played out, but things were so unpredictable at that time. She smiled knowingly, suddenly pleased with her choice to have given him her true first name. She had thought against it, but something about Ana screamed that she could trust him. The guarded air around him made her own feel lessened and protected. It was like she could trust him with her deepest, darkest secrets and he'd never look at her differently.

Still, even knowing the kind of person that he was, she wouldn't have been prepared to marry him without knowing if it was what she wanted for herself. Marriage was still a bitter concept in her mind, or at least, that's what she tried telling herself. It was hard to believe when Ana scratched at her like an itch she couldn't reach. Knowing him changed things more than she'd be willing to admit.

At his question, she tilted her head back to look up at the twinkling ceiling. "Yes. I've met and denied the majority of the country," she told him, eyes softening as she studied the patch of sky in her line of vision. "I was always promised the option to choose my partner, but I suppose I was naive for believing such a thing." Her gaze fell back upon him, studying him like each time before. He wasn't as easy to pick apart and discover like most people. Perhaps that was part of the reason she felt so fond of him.

"You could probably imagine my frustration and feeling of betrayal when they told me I was expected to marry in two weeks to some one I had expected to be a pathetic, snotty prince," she told him, her words holding no ill regard unto him, but only to the vision she had of princes in general thanks to her previous encounters.

She became curious next, leaning slightly forward as she tilted her head, taking a better look at the man across from her. She felt the same strings of curiosity pulling at her, drawing her closer to the first person she'd ever felt strangely about. "Your view on marriage must not be
that great either if you ran away to here to avoid the concept of it," she hummed, a light and gentle resonance to her voice.

Ana let her question hang in the air for a moment before exhaling, the weight of his thoughts settling heavily on his chest.
-
“My father,” he began, his tone flat, as if the words were drawn out by force rather than willingly offered, “he’s always been... controlling, to put it mildly. Everything he does, every move he makes, it’s calculated. Not for the benefit of anyone else, though. Just himself. Always himself.”
-
The bitterness in his voice sharpened, and his fingers curled into a loose fist on the armrest of his chair. “When I was younger, I thought it was normal. The way he controlled everything. The way he made decisions for everyone in the family as if our lives were just pieces on some chessboard he was playing. I didn’t realize how much damage he was doing—how much he was taking from all of us—until I got older. By then, it was too late to undo most of it.”
-
He shifted slightly, his gaze flicking back to Josephine for a split second before returning to some indeterminate point in the room. “The thing about my father is that he doesn’t see people. Not really. He sees opportunities. Leverage. Ways to get what he wants. And he’s damn good at it.” A short, humorless laugh escaped him. “It’s why I fought him so hard on this. On the idea of marrying some stranger I’d never met. I knew it wasn’t about me. It never is. It’s about him and his ambitions. His plans for the family. For the legacy he thinks he’s building.”
-
His jaw tightened, and he looked away, as if ashamed of the words that followed. “I didn’t want to be a pawn in one of his games again. I’ve spent years trying to step out of his shadow, trying to carve out something for myself that wasn’t just an extension of him. And now... this.” He gestured vaguely between them, the frustration in his voice giving way to resignation.
-
“I’m not saying marriage is off the table—not forever, at least—but it should’ve been my choice. My life, my terms. Not his. Definitely not his.” He fell silent for a moment, his chest rising and falling with a measured breath. “I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised. It’s exactly the kind of thing he would do. But that doesn’t make it easier to swallow.”
-
He looked up at the stars through the tangling mess of branches, appreciating, as he had for many nights, the fact that he'd added this feature. He'd spent days climbing the trees and gently bending the branches of them in ways as to not harm them, but to create a small break where he could put a skylight and see the stars clearly, without the den being visible. Anastasia was also proud of the tangle of sticks. While they were able to be seen through, they were also quite sturdy, and Ana could walk right over them without them breaking underneath him. Moments like these made him swell slightly with joy for himself.
-
Ana let out a soft laugh as a thought came to his head. "At this point, I might as well go marry those two nutballs," he flicked his hand at the exit of the cave. "As close as we are? I'm sure I'm close to running farther than Razaviv one of these days. Somewhere my guard can't find me. Go north to the tundras on the east of Trepidam Range; live with the wolves, or something wild." He sighed. "Just.. not here, anymore. I think I'm just about there."
-
Ana’s gaze finally returned to her, searching her face for any sign of reaction, though he wasn’t entirely sure why he cared. Maybe it was because, for the first time, he felt like he was talking to someone who might understand. Someone who had lived under similar pressures, who knew what it was like to have choices stolen away by those who claimed to know better.
-
Or maybe it was because she wasn’t just anyone anymore. She was Josephine. The girl he was supposed to marry. The girl who, somehow, against all odds, felt like the one person in the world who might see him for who he truly was.

Josephine listened, her expression neutral with concentration. Her own parents had went about their mission to control her through deceit and manipulation. They made her think that they were giving her what she wanted when in reality, they had just been waiting for the perfect moment to take away her freedom in order to gain power. That's all any leaders seemed to care about. Power, strength, and legacy.

Marriage should always be a choice, bonds made out of love and trust. There would be nothing stronger and more pure, but years of betrothals sent royalty down a power hungry road. It would only cause hurt and destruction in her eyes. "I understand where you are coming from. No one should ever be forced into things they don't want, even if it is for the supposed greater good. Especially not marriage. Marriage is too sacred to use in order to gain power..." She trailed off, toying with the edge of a blanket beneath her.

Her laughter followed his at the mention of marrying Quartz and Vincent. They surely seemed close enough with a bond more caring than she'd ever seen amongst friends. A certain fondness took her again when she looked to the cave's exit. They were truly connected in a way that everyone should be able to experience once.

Returning her attention to Ana, her eyes widened a little as he mentioned going further than Razaviv. He thought about leaving for good as well? She had been afraid she was overreacting and abandoning everything for nothing, but knowing she wasn't alone in her choices reminded her that her life was her own to lead. After a moment of silence, her shocked expression subsided and turned into something gentle and understanding. She understood because she had finally found the one person who was just like her. Who knew exactly how she was feeling and why she was feeling it..
"Here I was thinking I was wrong for running away from my fate... Instead, I find the one person who wants to do the same thing for the same reason," she said softly, an ocean of emotion swirling within her eyes. For once her voice sounded vulnerable and bear, everything laid out for only him to see. "If leaving is what you truly want, then you should do it. Make your own path, Ana," she urged him, her head lowering for a moment and breaking their eye contact.

Josephine wasn't sure why she cared so much as to tell him he should do it, but perhaps it was because the universe wasn't done with either of them yet, and neither of their paths involved being pawns in someone else's game. "You are too grand of a person to fall prisoner to someone else's plan. That much I know to be truth," she told him in an intense, nearly intimate tone. She met his gaze once more, waiting to search his reaction. She could see him, and for once she wanted someone to see her for who she was completely.

Ana listened to her words with an unusual stillness, the softness in her voice tugging at something deep within him. There was something in the way she spoke, something raw and genuine that resonated with him more than he expected. He didn’t respond right away, instead allowing her words to settle in the silence that hung between them.
-
He had never been good at talking about his feelings, especially when they aligned so closely with another’s. It was easier to stay guarded, to keep his thoughts locked away, but her vulnerability was different. It was a mirror to his own inner turmoil. For the first time, he felt the weight of their shared situation without the usual isolation he’d grown used to.
-
Her admission—that she, too, wanted to leave, to break away from a path that had been carved for her—struck him harder than he had anticipated. He wasn’t alone in this struggle. She had seen what he had seen, felt the same crushing sense of entrapment. The world, it seemed, was always bending its rulers into shapes that didn’t fit, pushing them into decisions that weren’t theirs to make.
-
As she spoke, Ana’s mind whirled with the intensity of her words. "You are too grand of a person to fall prisoner to someone else's plan." He repeated that in his mind, unable to shake the power behind the statement. For a moment, he felt a flicker of something—perhaps hope, or a desperate yearning—that maybe, just maybe, he wasn’t as alone in his fight as he thought.
-
His hands flexed in his lap again as he considered her advice, the idea of forging his own path. The very idea seemed so foreign to him—after all, what had he known of freedom? The expectation of duty had always held him, tethering him to the choices of others. But her words, so fiercely delivered, stirred something rebellious within him. Maybe there was another way.
-
Taking a breath, Ana spoke quietly, almost as if to himself, though she would surely hear. “It’s strange, isn’t it? To want something for yourself, to feel like you have a right to choose your own direction. For so long, I thought I had to follow the path laid out for me, even if I hated it. But hearing you...” His gaze finally returned to her, his expression no longer guarded but open, a vulnerable honesty flickering in his eyes. “Maybe it’s time to stop letting someone else dictate my fate.”
-
He let the silence stretch between them again, not uncomfortable but contemplative. “I don’t know what will happen if I leave, or if I can even make it happen. But I think you're right. I don’t want to be another cog in a machine that doesn’t care for me or anyone else.” His voice grew steadier, more determined, as if he was starting to speak his mind for the first time in years. “If I leave, I’ll do it for me. For my own future, not anyone else’s.”
-
He paused, meeting her gaze directly now, searching for something—anything—in her eyes. There was no turning back from this thought now. The idea of defying everything he had known, of breaking free, was no longer a distant fantasy. It was something he could almost feel, almost touch. And maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t so impossible after all.
"But, first, perhaps sleep." Anastasia looked around him, at the room he'd handcrafted with such care. "If anything, I'd love one more night in this godforsaken hole."
-
He looked down at her and gave a soft smile.

Josephine had no intention of returning home after that night. She was of calm and sound mind yet her feelings hadn't changed on the matter. If the marriage with Anastasia fell through, she'd only end up getting married to some other prince who'd fit her previous expectations of pathetic and stuck up. Wedding Ana would be as close as she would have gotten to a decent marriage, but it wasn't happening. She wasn't about to lay down and roll over to her parents wishes when she could go out and figure out life for herself.
It wouldn't be easy. She was terribly under prepared without a clue of where she'd go or what she'd do after that night. All she had was determination.

His softly spoken words resonated with her, pulling at her heart. He understood so well and that was much more than she could have asked for in a perfect stranger. She always thought she'd have to stay and uphold her duty of ruling one day, but it had never occurred to her before that night that she could make her own path as easily as she did.

Looking into those eyes just as vulnerable as her own softened her stone heart. They were two broken people, weighed down by the dreams of others, but now? Now she could see that meeting one another was the best thing to have ever happened that evening. Not only did she free herself, but now she possibly had just freed the only person who deserved it as much as her.

Hearing his decision lit a fire in her eyes, a proud determination of her own shining bright. "That's all I could ever wish for you. I truly do hope that you can find everything that it is you want in life." She told him on an ending note, her warmest smile of the night appearing as she held his gaze. The silence fell comfortably for a moment more before the mention of sleep was made.

Josephine nodded, her own exhaustion creeping in at the very thought of rest. "I think that's a fine place to start." Her smile still held as she shifted on the bed of blankets, assuming he'd much like his peace and privacy back now. She rose to her feet, once more looking to the small patches of sky she could see through the ceiling.
"I always wondered what it was like to be out beneath the stars, and now I know.." She trailed off, her words likely more for herself than anyone considering how softly they'd spoken. She snapped out of it a moment later and returned her gaze to Ana. "I suppose now I'll leave you to your space and privacy, should that be what you want," she told him, dipping her head slightly. She waited for his response, not wanting to encroach on him anymore. He'd treated her plenty well for the night, and the least that she could do was give him a peaceful night in that little hole of theirs.

[ I am so sorry that took so long - I wrote up a response and then forgot to post it. So, so sorry. ]
~
“Ah, actually,” Anastasia said, standing up from the stool with an almost absent air. His movements were deliberate, as if carefully considering how to offer the simple suggestion. “I don’t usually sleep in here.” He motioned to the room around them, his gaze sweeping across the small, intimate space with the faintest touch of familiarity. “I assumed you might prefer to, since this is the only other real... ‘bed’, if you want to call it that.” His voice was low, almost thoughtful, as he chose his words. “I typically sleep out there, with Quartz and Vince. But it’s entirely up to you. You could sleep in here, or out there with them. The other piles of blankets are probably just as comfortable, though maybe not quite as secluded.”
-
He gave a small nod toward the makeshift bedding scattered around the larger cave, then turned away, pulling the knife from the desk with a quick, practiced motion. His hands moved with purpose as he filed the blade away on the knife rack with a soft clink, setting the instrument in place before turning toward the exit. He left the lantern on the desk to light up the room for her.
-
His footsteps echoed faintly as he made his way down the path toward the main part of the cave. There, in the dimmer light, he spotted Quartz and Vince. Vincent had curled himself up into a tight ball, his breathing rhythmic and soft with the peacefulness of sleep. His body was relaxed in a way that made Ana’s chest tighten for just a moment—he was rarely able to sleep that soundly. Quartz, on the other hand, had his back pressed to Vince’s, his large form stretching out in silent slumber. The two of them were almost inseparable, always close, even in their sleep.
-
The sight of them there, together, felt almost surreal to Ana, who had often found solace in these caves in the past. He had snuck away on many occasions to sleep in this very den, hiding from the expectations that followed him everywhere else. And yet, tonight felt different. Tonight, the simplicity of the scene in front of him, the quiet togetherness of it, resonated deeply. The way Quartz’s presence seemed to ground Vince, and the way Vince's trust in Quartz allowed them to exist so effortlessly together—it was a bond Ana had always understood. They were more than best friends. His father was not his family. Quartz and Vince were.
-
He stood there for a moment longer, taking in the peacefulness of the scene, before he shook himself free from the thought. He had enough to think about for one night.
-
Walking toward the entrance, Ana’s hand pulled against the lantern hanging there, pulling it off of the hook, and with a soft click, he dimmed its light, returning it to its hook. The soft glow cast a faint shadow over the cave’s mouth, as though the world outside had receded into a distant memory.
-
After another moment, he strode back toward Quartz and Vince, the familiar comfort of the blankets soft beneath his fingertips. He grabbed his own, unfurling it as he made his way back to where Quartz lay. Without hesitation, he stretched out beside him, positioning himself carefully. His eyes lingered on the ceiling for a while, letting the stillness fill him up, pushing aside the thoughts that had been swirling through his mind.
-
And yet, even as his body relaxed, the thought of Josephine lingered at the back of his mind. Something in the air felt different tonight. His gut told him that tomorrow morning—no matter how the day unfolded—would not be the last time he would cross paths with her.
-
Something had shifted. Something had been set in motion. And whether he liked it or not, he knew that the next chapter of his life would be marked by the path they would walk, wherever it might lead.

(No worries! I was rather busy today anyways, so I was on and off a lot.)
Josephine hummed lightly and nodded as he told her she could in there. It was probably for the best rather than choosing to sleep against the bare stone or with Quartz and Vince. "Ah, I appreciate that. I'll stay in here then," she told him, finding more comfort in being able to sleep alone. If she'd sleep well at all. "Good night," she called to him quietly as he left, soon moving to dim the light from the lantern he'd left for her.

Josephine curled up on the pile of blankets, bringing one up around her small body. She angled her head up to the ceiling, sighing softly as she relaxed. It had been a long day, but she couldn't have wished for it to end any differently. Something about meeting Anastasia on her own terms had ignited something in her soul and pieces that had never fit together before suddenly did. And for some odd reason, thinking about Ana now being in her life eased her mind and body. She knew no matter where things went, he'd be there in some way, shape, form, or fashion. With that thought, she fell asleep, finally having her wish to spend the night beneath the stars.
---
The next morning Josephine woke to bird song, a sound so soft and divine. It was like heaven to wake up to it as the sunlight streamed down through the lattice work of the ceiling. She had never felt so energized after sleep, nor did she ever wake quite that early. It was refreshing. After stretching and granting herself the time to wake up properly, Josephine left the comfort of the blanket pile to peer into the other portion of the cave. She found the three still asleep, so she left them be for the time. She still had to find out where she was headed next.

She walked over to the desk and pulled her map out again. She leaned against the desk, looking down at the map she had spread out. There was the range that Ana had spoken of, but she'd never survive in that cold alone. Basille was too close to home, as was Yamiire. She could go west to Naros, though she still didn't know much about that area. She chewed at her lower lip in deep thought, the skin deepening in color the longer she continued.

A thought came to mind, though she wasn't sure how it would play out. If Ana was serious about leaving, perhaps she could convince him to leave with her. To get a grip on life away from their parents control before parting when the time was right. She hummed to herself, deciding she'd make that proposal later. Even if he said no, she knew it wouldn't be the last time that their paths crossed. Fate had brought them together once, and she knew deep down they'd be destined to meet again.

Or, perhaps that was the delusion her fantasy filled mind wanted her to believe. Fantasy or not, Josephine hoped it to be truth. In the least, she wanted to know that he was doing well for himself after they parted, if they did part.
After a while of trying to decide more, Josephine decided that if she left alone, she'd set off in one direction and just ride until she hit another town and go from there. It was as good a plan as any. With there still being no audible movement from the den, she busied herself with looking around the secluded room. She was humming a merry tune, joining the bird song while she observed the wooden figurines in a better light.

Anastasia's eyes hadn't yet opened, but the first thing he felt as he drifted out of a state of unconsciousness was a heavy weight on top of him.

He opened his eyes, squinting in the semi-dark at Vincent, who, at some point in the night, had decided to roll on top of him and use him as his own bed. Ana let out a sigh, watching Vince for a moment and wondering how he even did this. How he could have possibly rolled over Quartz in his sleep and curled up on top of Anastasia, he did not know. He shook his head slightly, his expression a mix of fondness and exasperation.

After a small while of allowing this, Ana pushed Vincent off of him, which caused him to roll onto Quartz, who let out a groan. Quartz's groan deepened as Vincent's full weight settled on him, and he muttered something incoherent under his breath.

"Good morning, merry," Anastasia said, getting up from the pile of blankets and stretching. He arched his back and rolled his shoulders, feeling the stiffness from sleeping under a human blanket. He looked down at Vincent, who was blinking up at him, looking half-dead. "How's the hangover, gorgeous?"

Vince let out an indignant noise, muffled by the blanket he was trying to pull over his head. His hair was a wild mess, sticking out in every direction like a haystack after a storm.

Ana couldn't help a small laugh. "That bad, ah? You look like you lost a fight with a bottle."

He re-lit the lantern next to the pile, casting a soft, warm glow over the room. Shadows danced on the rocky walls as he walked over to the lantern by the entrance and opened it as well. Quartz, still tangled in the blankets and half-pinned by Vincent, sat up and rubbed his white head of hair, looking groggy and unimpressed.

"How early is it, Ko? I feel like I barely slept," Quartz mumbled, his voice scratchy from disuse.

"I'm not sure, but I decided to get up, and that means you're up," Anastasia replied with a smirk, grabbing a jacket from a chair and throwing it on. He walked over to one of the smaller pieces of furniture and sat, looking up at the ceiling. "What are we thinking for breakfast? Choker's? The Pearled Diner?"

Vince let out a string of mumbles that sounded like curses, his words slurred and unintelligible. He buried his face deeper into the blankets, clearly intent on avoiding the day for as long as possible.

"Should I ask Josephine?" Ana teased, looking over his shoulder with a mischievous smile. He was met with a muffled groan of protest from Vince.

"Yeah, yeah, just go away," Vince complained, his voice muffled by the layers of fabric. His legs were still half-draped over Quartz, who was unsuccessfully trying to push them off.

Anastasia chuckled, standing up and striding into the opposite side of the cave. The separate room was brighter, sunlight streaming in through the delicately woven canopy. He ran a hand through his pale hair, smoothing it down before squinting into the sunlight. "Morning," he said to Josephine, his voice carrying a casual cheerfulness. "What is your preference for breakfast? Wander around until we find someplace halfway decent? Vince and Q have no vote; they aren't getting up, so it's all up to you.

Josephine's ears perked to the sound of talking, a fond smile of her own traveling across her features as she listened to the men groan and talk. What a group they were. She let them get woken up and accustomed, continuing to hum her little song while going over each figurine. She found that she liked the ones of wolves the most. They were such free creatures and he'd captured the beauty she'd only ever seen in books or drawings.
She stopped her humming when she heard her name from the other room, her head turning over her shoulder. Looks like it was showtime. She drew away from the figurines, returning back towards the desk so that she could grab her cloak. She was securing it around her shoulders when Ana came in, greeting her for the morning.

"Good morning to you as well," she returned, fluffing out her messy, slept on hair. Her voice had that same cool and collected sound to it as the night before, but a bit of joyfulness filled the gaps as well. Her eyes glittered eerily in the sunlight, appearing more silver than grey as she listened to his question.

"Hm. I must admit I'm not familiar with anywhere worth eating, but I'd like to think I'm a wanderer at heart," she joked, the sunlight streaming through favoring her features. "I'm sure it won't be too hard to wander somewhere decent," she added, making her choice in the matter be known. All she knew for sure was that she was definitely hungry, and a moment later her stomach decided to let that fact become common knowledge. A soft grumbling noise erupted from her stomach, making a tinge of pink wash over her cheeks.

"I suppose breakfast is a good place to start today as well," she said, knowing traveling on an empty stomach into the unknown wouldn't serve her well at all. Then she remembered what she'd thought about previously that morning, the idea seeming to light up her face.

"I also wanted to propose an idea to you," she began, nibbling at her lower lip once those gears got turning again. She paused for a moment before continuing, her hands shifting down to rest on hips. "If you were to decide to go else where, I wanted to offer for us to travel together. At least until one of us was to decide where we wanted to be," she suggested, meeting his gaze to try and see his response before he spoke it. Of course, she didn't expect an immediate response, but knowing some of what he was thinking would be nice.

The more she had thought about it and watched Ana with Quartz and Vincent, the more she realized that she craved a companionship like that. Or just company in general. However, even if Ana denied going with her or decided he couldn't answer right then, she wouldn't be upset. After all, she was the one who'd told him his life was his own to make.
