I usually make the original image, edit it (for that one I use 3 slides and close the eyes) and then insert them into a gif maker. Not the best for big images but it works for the pixels :)

I used a stock photo for the outline and as a general guideline for my shading, but I've painted over the whole thing, redone the mane, and completely changed the colour so it's not quite a photo manip. The credit is on the image.
