The rush of attempt to hide his emotions was at least partially telling that this demigod was still somewhat in control of himself. Why he was trying... well... Lucius wasn't sure. He'd seen worse--much worse. But it was the words that Lucius paid attention to. The tone behind it, the words that tumbled from his lips that was what he was currently listening to.

He--he had actually thought Loki cared? Lucius stifled his internal emotions, knowing full well he had told him that his father hadn't cared at all. But it was harder to believe when they had been in your ear for longer than he could remember. Feo spoke about the fact that he tried to have a choice.

Now he was, supposedly, as good as dead and he couldn't keep fighting.

Lucius remained silent as he looked toward the snake. Golden scales disappeared into the brush and he felt a touch of enjoyment. That snake tied him to his father, his father would inevitably find him through her. But it meant that he could actually get to working for good now.

"Perhaps lucky for you," Lucius said with a touch of amusement, "change runs through my blood," he stepped forward and sat down beside him on the grass, one wing curled around Feo. "What can he really do? Besides, why does he care? It's Loki. The moment he does anything, he'll get the attention of Odin, Thor and the rest of the crew up there. Besides, you've got a little crew down here too."

If Lilian counted and most of the dark-aligned demigods that would inevitably bite at the chance to take down a god.

"How about we work together?" Lucius drew his sapphire eyes upward, toward the sky. "I know, I know, it's unheard of... a light-aligned and a dark-aligned working together..."

He let out a small sigh and shook his head, his hands resting on his knees.

A part of him was wondering if he really was this crazy. Was he really nuts enough to go and try and take down a god himself? But what other choice did he have? He didn't have a choice at the moment, it was to either put his head down and ignore everything. Forget he existed and let him go, which felt like it went against the very nature of his being.

Or prove that everyone could change--and should change for the better.

"The real reason I was in the library?" Lucius let his tone drop just a little bit, far more real and vulnerable, "I was looking up ways to get rid of the gods. Nobody else would listen, they wouldn't care and they definitely wouldn't help. I want to show you that you are more than what Loki ever thought. Loki never cared about anyone--and it shows in everything he does. So I figured... I'd concoct a plan to get rid of him. Then you wouldn't have to worry..."

His wings lowered slightly, a small sigh escaping. "He can't hurt you... if he can't get to you."

Feo froze the moment Lucius’s wing brushed his shoulder. His entire body stiffened, his breath hitching in his throat. Touch was foreign, unwelcome—a barrier he rarely let anyone cross. Lilian was the exception, but even with her, it was a rare and begrudging allowance. Comfort wasn’t something Feo craved or felt he deserved. He didn’t trust it. Comfort was fleeting, touch was suffocating, and the mere thought of being vulnerable in someone else’s presence always made his skin crawl.
-
Yet, this time, he didn’t recoil.
-
Instead, he felt his body betray him, sinking ever so slightly into the warmth of Lucius’s wing as it draped around him. His head tilted of its own accord, resting against Lucius's shoulder as though it belonged there. The steady rise and fall of Lucius’s breath became a quiet rhythm in the chaos of Feo’s mind, and he let himself listen to it, grounding himself in something other than the weight of his thoughts.
-
This was weird. No, it was more than weird—it was utterly bizarre. Feo’s mind raced, struggling to make sense of it. He wasn’t the kind of person who sought out comfort, least of all physical comfort, and yet here he was, leaning into someone else as though it was the most natural thing in the world.
-
He couldn’t focus. Too many things clamored for his attention: the strange intimacy of the moment, the frantic beating of his heart, the instincts screaming at him that this was wrong, the looming specter of Loki’s wrath. And then there were Lucius’s words, cutting through the storm in Feo’s mind like a blade.
-
“Get… rid of the gods?” Feo whispered, his voice barely audible over the night’s stillness. His gaze dropped to the grass in front of him, his eyes unfocused. “That’s—that’s the kind of thing someone overhears, and it gets you killed. You can’t—that’s not—” He shut his eyes tightly, shaking his head as if to clear it. “You’re a maniac,” he muttered, though there was no real bite to his words.
-
Silence fell between them, broken only by the faint rustle of leaves in the breeze. After a moment, Feo spoke again, his voice quieter this time, laced with a mixture of longing and bitterness.
-
“I’d like nothing more than to get rid of Loki,” he admitted. “Hell, I’d replace him if I had to. But what he’s done—to others, to me…” His voice faltered, and he swallowed hard, forcing himself to continue. “It’s not something you can just… undo.”
-
His hands clenched tighter around themselves, trembling slightly. He tightened his grip as if it might steady him. “But what kind of demigod is stupid enough to go after the gods? Whether to kill or dethrone them, it doesn’t matter. They’re too powerful. We’re nothing compared to them.”
-
Feo glanced down at his hands, his knuckles white from the tension. “I’m only a fourth celestial, Lucius. I barely have anything. I can turn into three animals, and even that doesn’t always work. I can change my appearance and make copies of myself, but it’s all faulty. How am I supposed to—” He cut himself off abruptly, the words caught in his throat as the earth beneath him shuddered again. The faint tremor reverberated through his body, a cruel reminder of the power he couldn’t control.
-
His hands trembled again, and he tightened them further, pressing his palms into his thighs to stop the shaking. “He’ll find a way,” Feo murmured, his voice hollow. “He always has.”
-
For a moment, he simply sat there, staring at the ground, his mind swirling with doubt and despair. Then, finally, he looked up at Lucius, his eyes searching his face for some semblance of reassurance or certainty.
-
“But,” Feo said quietly, his voice steadier now, “if you think it’ll work, I’m willing to try.”

Feo leaned into his shoulder, his touch. Something Lucius wasn't entirely used to. Most of the time, Milo leaned away from him or his friends were all busy doing something. They never had time to just settle down like this and just be comforted.

But the silence was something that he wasn't entirely sure he enjoyed. The silence of the demigod beside him as he turned over the words he had said in his mind. The mumbled, whispered answer was telling, somewhat. Lucius knew he was reckless, that was nothing new. But getting rid of the gods was something he had come up with in the lat few days.

He mentioned that it was the type of thing that could get him killed and, to be fair, he was right. Lucius knew that even if he wasn't sure he really believed it. A maniac? That one, that he could believe. He was nuts, he was a maniac, he was crazy, he was... optimistic.

Loki had done a lot of things. But so had most of the gods. It was one of those thoughts that tumbled into a bigger one and that was what had taken Lucius the majority of the time in the library. If one fell, then more would have to go. Why? Because they didn't deserve to be up there. Instead of taking time to change, become better... if nothing else, the gods had become worse.

Feo trembled beside him and Lucius drew his gaze down toward him as he mentioned. What kind of demigod would be stupid enough? Oh that was an easy answer.

It was Lucius.

It was him, hands down. He was the exact right dumb enough to go after them.

Lucius hadn't exactly gotten into the whole celestial tiers. Fourth celestial? Three appearances.

"We don't' go just as we are," Lucius let out a small noise, almost a loose laugh. "We get godly items--ha!" His eyes glittered with a dry laugh. "If you're a fourth celestial then... uh... I don't even know what I am. I have wings and instinct that's it. I think. Still not entirely sure but that's pretty much it. But my plan, ha, it's foolproof."

He leaned back to look back at Feo, a giddy light in his eyes. "Loki will have to go through Lilian, through me, through a lot of other demigods here, in order to get to you. And trust me, I don't go down easy."

He turned his gaze to the stars above. "The plan is relatively simple. We get the Cestus of Aphrodite. It's... apparently... somewhere in Kansas. That will make everyone fall in love with whoever is wearing it. Well, if I say that my love-language is getting gifts... and I send out a particular list of items... the people and gods under the spell will absolutely get that for me," he waved his free hand lightly as he spoke, "items being the armor of Achilles--which is impenetrable, a few swords and bows... a spear that will hit it's target no matter your skill..."

He let out a dry noise.

"And nobody will care. Unlike you, having someone always over your shoulder no matter what, I had nobody. Free rein, free to do whatever I wanted. But I wasn't even powerful. I was some nobody from the middle of nowhere... doing nothing special. Well, now we're both changing things up," he took in a breath. "It's scary at first, it really is. But it's going to be worth it."

Feo listened intently as Lucius spoke, but he couldn’t help it when amusement bubbled up inside him, spilling over into a crooked smile that was a stark contrast to the fear that had gripped him earlier.
-
Lucius was so stupid. It was almost endearing in a way that irritated Feo more than he was willing to admit.
-
“The Cestus of—” he began, but his words were cut off by a sudden, uncontrollable fit of laughter. It started as a low chuckle and quickly escalated into rolling waves of mirth that left him clutching his sides.
-
“Oh, gods, it’s genius,” Feo managed between laughs, “but also so, so stupid. Your plan is to seduce the gods into handing over their magical items? Do you even know if the Cestus will work on all gods? Have you done any testing, or are you just winging it—pun absolutely intended?”
-
He realized he was still smiling, the remnants of his laughter softening his usual sharp features, and quickly schooled his expression into something closer to neutrality. “How much research have you done on this brilliant little scheme of yours? Let me guess—one afternoon, tops?”
-
He shook his head, amusement still dancing in his eyes, and shifted his gaze skyward. The stars above them glittered faintly, indifferent to the absurdity unfolding beneath their light.
-
“And how, pray tell, are we even getting to Kansas?” Feo asked, his tone equal parts curiosity and skepticism. “We don’t have a car, we sure as hell don’t have money for a plane, and while I could fly, I’d probably drop out of the sky after an hour. Let’s not even talk about the fact that I’d rather not end up as a smear on the side of a mountain. And you? I mean, hiding your wings was step one, right? So I’m guessing you were thinking about public transportation. A bus, maybe? Or are you planning to work some miracle and scrape together enough cash for a flight? Because unless you’ve got a secret godly sugar daddy, I’m not seeing how this is happening.”
-
Feo tilted his head, studying Lucius with a faint smirk as he waited for an answer. The silence stretched between them, filled only by the soft rustling of leaves and the occasional chirp of a cricket. Feo’s mind wandered as he waited, his thoughts circling back to the strange cold in his chest whenever he looked at Lucius, and then the warmth his touch brought him, diminishing that cold.
-
He didn’t understand it. Why did Lucius make him feel this way? It wasn’t just the ease with which he pulled Feo out of his spiraling thoughts—it was something deeper, something that made Feo want to lean closer, to stay in this moment just a little longer.
-
The thought unsettled him.
-
Curling up beside Lucius right here, in the middle of the garden, and forgetting about the rest of the world seemed oddly appealing. What the fuck? Feo thought, shaking his head slightly as if to dislodge the notion. What is wrong with me?
-
He glanced at Lucius again, his smirk faltering into something softer, more uncertain. Whatever it was about this boy—this strange, reckless, stupid boy—it was messing with his head in ways he wasn’t sure he liked.

The smile that drew over Feo's eyes was bright and full of far more light than he had seen in the demigod than before. It drew a brighter and far more genuine smile from Lucius as it was followed by laughter. The giddy noise blending with the soft subtle noise of the night air felt perfect. It twisted his own heart into a fluttering mess as a touch of rose pink color tinged the winged demigod's cheeks.

He had thought it was pretty clever and, as Feo pointed out, rather stupid. "Figure if it'd be dumb enough... it'd work. Why take them on alone when I can just... y'know... convince them to work with me..." Lucius grinned lightly, a touch of heat in his face accompanying the flushed color.

The smile faded almost immediately as Feo turned to list off the more consequential details and for a moment, Lucius felt his heart sink. There was that guarded look again, the mask that he wore. It felt sharp, looked dull and felt like a wall was thrown up between them once again. There was a small light in his eyes but it wasn't near the same.

"Well, it's hard to test something without having it," Lucius began to rattle off the details that he had planned, "so I figured I'd get it. Step one did work though, I did hide my wings. Got that down. I've still got a bit of money left from selling some stuff of mine that didn't fit in the move--mostly furniture. So it should be enough to cover a plane ticket. Mother left her inheritance early because she didn't know how long she was going to last on earth... which, was probably the one good thing she actually did. I've got plenty of funds, honestly. More than enough to cover college and whatnot," he explained lightly, a few feathers ruffled.

"But a plane was the main idea and then just asking around. I'd make up some story about how I have to look up an actual artifact for college and this was the one that I was assigned to--y'know, usual garbage that way nobody is too suspicious. Then, when I actually found it, and depending on where it was... I'd figure out a way to make a replica, switch it out and then start the testing phase of whether or not it would actually work."

If not, the secondary plan was to do the stupid-er plan. Which... may or may not have involved trekking all the way down to the River Styx... and hoping for the best. If he had his 'Achilles' heel' somewhere under where his armor covered then he'd be, essentially, untouchable. Because the Armor was impenetrable.

As his free hand pushed through his golden hair, he tilted his head lightly as he spoke again. "Figured if nothing else, I'd get at least one godly figure to do something with the Cestus. Then... I'd figure something else out. The problem is, getting rid of Loki is easy. He's Norse, he's immortal until killed. The Greeks? That's harder, you have to find the Orphitaurus, kill it and burn the entrails to even gain access to the power to kill the gods in the first place--I did research on the Titan war. I don't know how to find an Orphitaurus or if it even exists anymore. So ... I figured, this way would be easier. If they all love me, then they'd do what I want them to do. If it meant being better parents... y'know, I'd... I'd do it..."

The tone of the winged demigod shifted, far more quiet and vulnerable. "It's not really for me at all, it's for everyone else. I see kids and demigods who wanted nothing more than a parent who loved them more than life itself--because they see that in others," his eyes dimmed slightly, "and never got it. I see others who do heroic deeds, fight the odds and everything just to be noticed by their parent... and it still doesn't work. It's not for me, it's for them. Because they deserve to be loved, to have that parent. So I'll do anything to help them."

The unspoken line that he avoided touching in the slightest was the one line he repeated every single time.

Even if it comes at the cost of me.

He'd never say it aloud because he knew full well the type of reaction he'd get.

Feo listened in silence as Lucius laid out his plan, his earlier laughter fading as he focused on the winged demigod’s words. It was ridiculous—borderline insane—but the conviction behind Lucius’s voice held his attention like nothing else could. Every word was steeped in a strange mixture of idealism and desperation, a boldness that felt both admirable and deeply unsettling.
-
As he continued, Feo couldn't help but want to laugh again. The whole idea was so absurd that it twinged an amusement inside of him that was very clearly there to hide his heart-wrenching fear. Something like this was something Feo was scared to believe in, something he was scared to put his life on. But then he caught something in the demigod’s voice—a genuine vulnerability that stopped the humor in its tracks. This wasn’t just some impulsive plan born of recklessness or boredom. No, Lucius had thought about this, turning it over and over in his mind until it consumed him. His solutions, however wild and half-formed, were born of a kind of determination that Feo couldn’t decide whether to admire or pity.
-
Still, he remained quiet, letting Lucius continue. And then, without warning, the demigod’s tone shifted. It was quieter now, softer, carrying an undercurrent of raw emotion that struck Feo in a way he hadn’t expected.
-
"It’s not really for me at all, it's for everyone else."
-
For a moment, Feo couldn’t breathe. His chest tightened, the words echoing in his mind like the tolling of a distant bell. It wasn’t just what Lucius had said—it was how he’d said it, with a sincerity so profound that it felt like an open wound. Feo’s gaze locked on Lucius’s face, his sharp features softened by the flickering firelight. The rawness there was disarming, pulling at something deep inside him, something he thought he’d buried long ago.
-
“You’re a fucking idiot,” Feo said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. There was no malice in the words, just a strange mix of awe and frustration that made them feel heavier than he intended. He ran a hand through his dark hair, the motion unsteady, his fingers trembling as he tried to sort through the chaos in his mind.
-
“You’re telling me you’d risk everything—your life, your soul—for people who might not even thank you? For a chance that the gods would be better parents?” Feo shook his head, letting out a bitter laugh that sounded more like a gasp. “That’s… That’s the most absurd, selfless thing I’ve ever heard.”
-
He leaned back slowly, letting his weight settle back slightly against his wing. His head tilted back to rest softly against the feathers, his gaze staring up at the stars above. They seemed impossibly far away, like tiny pinpricks in a dark, infinite void. “You’re ridiculous, Lucius. Absolutely ridiculous.”
-
But even as he said it, Feo felt a pang of something unfamiliar. Admiration, maybe? Or was it guilt? The emotions churned together, leaving him off-balance in a way he didn’t like. He wasn’t used to feeling this way—so uncertain, so vulnerable.
-
“I don’t get you,” he admitted after a long pause, his voice softer now, almost fragile. “I don’t get why you care so much. You barely know me. You barely know any of them, probably, and yet here you are, trying to fix something that’s been broken for centuries. Who does that? Who even thinks they can do that?”
-
He turned his head, his eyes searching Lucius’s face for some kind of answer, something that might help him understand. What he found there was just as confusing—earnestness, determination, and something else that was too big, too complex to name.
-
“But... I guess that’s why you’re you, huh?” Feo said finally, his voice softening even further. There was no sarcasm this time, no edge. Just a quiet acknowledgment of the strange, impossible person sitting beside him.

The way that this Norse demigod listened... was telling. Lucius felt a little less like he was being judged for the usual things. His recklessness, his stupidity, his optimism... a blind lack of self-preservation. The silence that Feo had was more thoughtful.

Lucius finished his words, letting the silence fill the air again. His sapphire gaze turned, looking back at Feo. He found the other demigod studying him in return before he let out a small whispered sentence.

Oh, he already knew that. There was no matching the stupidity that Lucius had. He was patient, kind to a fault and had the idiocracy to go with it.

But the way Feo had said it was different. It wasn't out of anger, just awe and perhaps confusion. Which, Lucius could understand to a point. Nobody else was dumb enough to really think about going against the gods--let alone using items against them. The items they gifted to mortals... used against the gods? Yeah right. That was the sort of thing that only an idiot could dream of and a fool would actually do.

Lucius felt the corner of his lips pull into a wane and lopsided half-hearted smile. "I don't really need a thanks," he agreed, "I don't even need to be acknowledged. I just want to see kids like us... end up better than us."

The winged demigod followed his gaze upward to the stars. For some, the stars felt like an eternity away... and for others, they were only a fingertip's touch away, just mere inches from their hands.

Ridiculous? That one was... a little new. It drew a small chuckle from Lucius, his head lowering in the low and brief chuff of laughter. Perhaps he was.

Lucius glanced back at him, noting the fragile tone in his voice.

"I... yeah," Lucius started, admitting that... it did make him... him. "I guess it's... it's the..." Lucius paused to think. Why did he care? Why did he think he could?

Perhaps a part of him didn't. He didn't think he really could but the majority of him did.

Deep down, he knew why he was doing it and there was, perhaps, a selfish reason for it. He wanted to be the person that he never had. That hero that came sweeping in, that figure that he wished he could've seen. The big person to tell off his parents, tell them to love him more--to be genuine and be there. To be that person that actually did something instead of just shouting into a void that never cared.

Centuries--that was the issue. Lucius knew of centuries worth of gods and demigods who had gone through the same cycle. If no one else, then he would be the person to at least throw a wrench into the cycle to get the ideas going if he didn't see it all the way through.

But how to put that into words?

"Someone... who's tired of seeing the same ol' thing over and over again," Lucius finally attempted, his voice uncertain, "who... I guess, if nothing else, shows others that they can speak up and speak out. That they don't have to do the same thing... forever. Zephyrus is a god of change and, y'know, I might not have any powers or anything fancy... but I'm going to prove that right. Change is inevitable and you might as well change for the better."

Lucius let out a small sigh. Maybe one day, he'd reveal the actual truth. But for now, it was better to think of it for everyone else.

Feo listened quietly, his eyes still trained on the stars above, though his mind was no longer quite so distant. Lucius’s words had a weight to them, one that Feo hadn’t expected. They were raw, unrefined, like a confession. The winged demigod was talking in a way that didn’t make Feo feel like an outsider—there was no judgment, no condescension. For the first time, Lucius didn’t seem like someone who was trying to be a hero, but just someone who was trying, however futilely, to make something better.
-
As Lucius spoke about change, about breaking cycles, Feo couldn’t help but feel the truth in it. The world did feel stagnant sometimes, like the gods had set things in motion long ago and they were content to watch as the rest of them played out their roles. It wasn’t something Feo had ever put into words, but there was a subtle, familiar itch in his chest now that he heard Lucius voice it. It wasn’t something the gods were likely to notice, nor care about. But maybe it didn’t have to start with them. Maybe it had to start with someone who was foolish enough to think they could do something about it.
-
Feo’s gaze finally shifted to Lucius, the demigod’s profile framed by the pale light that shone from the sky. He wasn’t sure what to make of it. He didn’t know whether to be moved by the sincerity of Lucius’s words or frustrated by the way the other demigod seemed so certain that things could be different. Feo wasn’t so sure. But at the same time, he found himself feeling something he couldn’t quite name.
-
"You really think you can make a difference?" Feo asked, the words more thoughtful than he intended. His voice was low, a little rough with the hesitation that lingered in his mind. It wasn’t skepticism, at least not entirely. It was a challenge, but a quiet one. "I mean, sure, change is inevitable, but that doesn’t mean it’s for the better. People like us—demigods—what are we supposed to do against gods who’ve been around for centuries? You think they'll just... step aside?"
-
Feo shook his head, but there was no anger in the motion. Just a kind of weary resignation. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to believe Lucius. He did, in some corner of his heart. But it felt like the kind of belief that always led to disappointment.
-
"But," Feo added, his voice softer, "maybe that’s the point, huh? Maybe it’s not about winning. Maybe it’s about doing it anyway."
-
He let out a slow breath, looking back up at the stars. They were distant and cold, but they still seemed to shine with a certain kind of stubbornness. "I don’t know if I get it, Lucius. I don’t know if I can." His hand brushed through the grass again, searching for some sort of grounding. "But if you’re going to try, then… maybe you don’t have to do it alone."
-
The words felt strange as they left his mouth, as though they didn’t quite belong there. But they were there now, hanging in the air between them. Feo didn’t offer a promise, not yet. He couldn’t—he wasn’t sure he was ready to take that step. But he couldn’t deny that the idea of change, however reckless or impossible, was a little less ridiculous than it had seemed just a few moments ago.
-
"But.. with sleep, probably," he said ruefully, giving a yawn that his instincts told him to muffle, but he didn't. He was already curled up on the grass next to him, being so disgustingly vulnerable. It wasn't like he could do much worse.
-
Feo's head fell to the side, his eyes closing.
-
And then he remembered where he was, and forced them open again.
-
If it hadn't been bad enough, Feo had been about to fall asleep on Lucius's shoulder.
-
He sighed. One moment of freedom, and he was immediately throwing away everything Loki had ever taught him.
-
The change was weird, and mostly unwelcome.
-
But not entirely.

For years, Lucius had worked with these feelings that he had. He had worked around them, through them and with them. There wasn't much he hadn't tried to stifle or stop the feelings. After a while, he just gave up. Granted, he had let it slip out once before and the reaction was almost nuclear. They had him on constant watch, making sure that nothing he did was too stupid. He hadn't shared those thoughts ever again but they had popped up on occasion. Usually, he'd chuckle to himself about 'yeah right' and then let them dissipate.

But this time, they had come back with full force. Not only that but the feeling that this time was different. He hadn't started out with the intention of sharing these thoughts at all, in fact, he figured that he'd quell them and shove them down and whatnot.

But instead, Feo... listened. He gave him his ear, he listened to him and while Lucius could sense a tinge of judgment it wasn't unwelcome. Nor was it powerful or connected to hatred or anger or anything. It was just confusion and perhaps a sense of making sure he wasn't too stupid.

Instead, Lucius turned his head slightly as Feo questioned about him. Did he really think he could do it? Make a difference?

Lucius let out a small and slow breath. "Yeah," he said quietly, leaving the word up. He did feel like he could. Whether or not it was big or it did everything he wanted it to do... that wasn't really up to him. But what mattered was what he did.

His golden hair tousled around his own fingers, pushing one hand through the soft blond locks. His sapphire eyes flicked upward. He didn't think they'd step aside at all. Which was why he had different phases to his plan.

Feo pointed out part of his inner thoughts. It wasn't about winning. It was about proving that you could do it.

"That's alright--you don't have to get it and you don't even have to try," Lucius kept his tone gentle, his words kind. "I don't really ... need help, y'know. I'm ... I am going to do it either way, no matter what."

If he had help... that would be nice but if not? Oh well.

He'd do it anyways. There was, quite literally, no way to stop him. Lucius had his plan and he was fixed to it.

Sleep... Lucius blinked a couple times as the thought startled him. "Y-yeah," he stammered after a moment, realizing the time as well. "W-we should get to sleep. I--yeah. My goodness, we need sleep. I don't know if this campus has a curfew but if it does, we're probably getting close to it--"

Lucius stood up, helping Feo to his feet and took a few steps back. "I'll see you later...?"

Feo hesitated for a moment, caught off guard by the sudden shift in the atmosphere. Lucius’s voice, steady and sure, carried a weight that seemed to ripple through the quiet night, leaving a strange impression on him. It wasn’t just the certainty in Lucius’s words—it was the way they seemed to reach out and anchor themselves in Feo, stirring something he couldn’t quite name. In the space between them, unspoken things lingered: determination, stubbornness, and that intangible something deeper, something that refused to be defined but made itself known all the same.
-
Feo rubbed the back of his neck, his fingers brushing against the tension that had settled there. His body still felt sluggish from the heaviness of the night, as though the shadows had seeped into his very bones. Lucius extended a hand, firm and unyielding, and Feo took it reluctantly, letting himself be pulled to his feet. The words "I’ll see you later" hung in the air between them, heavy with implications that neither of them dared to address directly.
-
Feo’s gaze fell to the ground, his eyes tracing the uneven patterns in the grass beneath his boots. For a fleeting moment, he considered letting it end here—letting Lucius walk away, taking his plans, his convictions, and all the weight of his unshakable resolve with him. It would’ve been easier. Simpler. The kind of clean break Feo had learned to make without hesitation.
-
But something inside him refused to let it go.
-
“Yeah,” he muttered finally, his voice low but steadier than he expected. The word felt heavier than it should, as though it carried more than just agreement. When he finally looked up, his heterochromic eyes reflected the faint light of the moon, their glow subdued but unwavering. “You’ll see me later.”
-
There was something unspoken in those words, a subtle promise that felt too significant to be ignored. Feo wasn’t entirely sure he meant to make it, and yet, there it was—an acknowledgment that, for now, this wasn’t the end. Not for him. Maybe not for Lucius, either.
-
He shoved his hands into his pockets, his shoulders slouched but his stance not entirely closed off. There was an air of reluctant acceptance in his posture, the kind of quiet surrender that comes when you know you’re standing on the edge of something bigger than yourself. “Get some sleep, golden boy,” he said, his tone dry but tinged with a reluctant amusement that hadn’t been there before. “You’re gonna need it if you’re planning to seduce the gods tomorrow, or whatever ridiculous thing you’ve got cooked up.”
-
The faintest hint of a smirk tugged at the corners of his mouth as he spoke, but he didn’t wait for Lucius to respond. He turned on his heel, the movement almost careless, and started back toward the dorms. The night stretched out around him, cool and quiet, but his thoughts were anything but still.
-
As Feo walked, his mind kept circling back to Lucius—his words, his conviction, the quiet intensity that seemed to radiate from him. It clung to Feo like a shadow, refusing to be shaken off.
-
He didn’t know what he was doing, why he’d bothered to stay, or why he cared enough to even entertain the idea of sticking around. Feo had always been good at being alone, at retreating into the safety of his own solitude. But now, for the first time in what felt like forever, the idea of isolation didn’t feel as comforting as it once had.
-
The dorm’s distant lights came into view, their soft glow cutting through the darkness. Feo slowed his pace, his footsteps dragging slightly as he allowed himself one last glance over his shoulder.
-
Feo shook his head, a quiet exhale escaping his lips as he turned back toward the dorms. Whatever was happening—whatever pull Lucius had on him—it wasn’t something he could figure out tonight. But he couldn’t quite bring himself to dismiss it either.
