Milo knew full well there was more behind the words that his winged friend was giving him. It was the face--the mask--that he would show others. There was something more behind his words, something dangerous. But he wasn't showing the world what he was planning. No, he never would. That was how it all seemed to be.

He couldn't have normal friends. No, he had... Lucius. The winged demigod who had pretty much no real parental guidance when growing up--and it showed now--in the way he did whatever he wanted. Unluckily for Milo, it wasn't the usual 'whatever he wanted' that other college aged kids did. Drinking, partying, the likes. Lucius never found enjoyment in that side of the world. He found enjoyment in showing others what they could have. It didn't have to be drastic or dramatic, it didn't have to be earth shaking or world shattering. Sometimes, it was as simple as realizing that you were more than you thought.

And sometimes it was much, much larger.

Milo had a deep rooted suspicion that this was one of those 'much larger' ideas and not just a subtle hide-the-wings idea. That was just a piece of the puzzle. But the more he pestered, the more Lucius would hide it.

Milo shook his head, deciding to see if he couldn't figure out why Lucius had gotten so riled up.

"Why do you care if he understands or not--Feo--y'know?" Milo prompted slowly and quietly, watching Lucius pause in his skimming over the spells in the book. His brown eyes met with the sapphire gaze of Lucius as he looked up as well.

Why did he care so much?

"Because a demigod with so much potential to change the world deserves to do it on their own volition and choice, not because of their fool hardy parent."

"Okay, and? What about all of the demigods of Zeus and Poseidon? How many of them have done the same thing?" Milo tried to dig deeper into the background.

"They do it because they want to be seen," Lucius responded lightly, "they have a choice. They don't have to care, they don't have to be seen over all hundreds of their siblings. But that demigod doesn't. He believes that he doesn't get a choice because that's what his idiot parent has told him," Lucius insisted, "he's so far up in the mists of manipulation that he can't see or breath the fresh air of reality."

"Lucius," Milo's tone wavered slightly, "what are you planning on doing about it?"

"I'm going to show him that I'm right. That he isn't a puppet on a string, that he's more than just a pawn and that his father can shove his head in the sand and take a deep breath--"

Milo pursed his lips for a moment, his mouth opening and then closing again. "Lucius...?"

"What?"

"Are you sure?"

Lucius lifted his sapphire eyes. "About what, Milo?"

"Your plan. I know it's more than just hiding wings," he replied quietly. "Are you sure the rest of it is a good idea?"

"It's fool proof."

"Oh good grief."

Feo remained pressed against Lilian’s shoulder for what felt like hours, though it was likely only minutes. The quiet corner of the library seemed like its own world, removed from the weight of expectations and the looming shadows of the school. He could feel her steady breathing beneath him, a quiet rhythm that grounded him.
-
Finally, he stirred, straightening slightly but not fully pulling away. His gaze fell to his hands, the glowing blanket slipping down as he absently traced the seams of his gloves. It was easier to look at them than at her.
“I need to figure out what’s next,” he said, his voice low but steady. “If this isn’t who I am anymore—if I’m not just his tool—then… what am I?”
-
Lilian didn’t respond right away. Instead, she watched him carefully, her expression thoughtful. “That’s not something anyone can answer for you,” she said eventually, her tone gentle but firm. “But maybe it doesn’t have to be one big answer. Maybe it’s just… steps. One at a time.”
-
He let out a hollow laugh. “Steps. Like what? Apologizing to Lucius again? Trying not to screw up every time I open my mouth?”
-
“Maybe,” she said with a small shrug. “But also figuring out what you want—what makes you you, apart from him.”
-
The mention of “him” sent a familiar shiver through Feo’s spine, but he forced himself to push past it. “What if I don’t know?” he admitted. “I’ve been doing this for so long, I don’t even know what I’d be without it.”
-
“That’s okay,” Lilian said simply. She reached out, taking one of his hands in hers. “You don’t have to figure it out all at once. Just… promise me you’ll try.”
-
Feo hesitated, the words catching in his throat. He wasn’t sure if he could promise that, but something about the way she looked at him—so steadfast, so unshakable—made him want to try.
-
“Okay,” he said finally. “I’ll try.”
-
Lilian smiled, a small but genuine curve of her lips. “Good. That’s all I ask.”
-
For a while, they sat in silence again, the weight of their conversation settling into something quieter, more manageable. Feo felt a strange sense of calm—fragile but real—as if the storm inside him had eased, if only for a moment.
-
"I'm going to talk to him," Feo said suddenly, letting go of her hand and rising to his feet.
-
"Lucius?" She asked, looking up at him.
-
"No, father." Although, Feo knew he did have to speak to Lucius at some point. For now, he'd avoid it as much as possible. "Varmire will take Cvestia a message, so I don't have to send a letter. I'll make him see."
-
Lilian sighed. "You know how incredibly stupid that is?"
-
"And what is he going to do to me?" Feo retorted. "He's weak. If anything, I can find sanctuary in his counterparts. I'll be alright." He took a deep breath. "I won't let him use me anymore."
-
"Azzy, you are dealing with a power far beyond you. You have no idea what he may have that can kill you on the spot, even with being so far away. Trying to change his mind is dangerous. You are going to get yourself killed, which means Lucius will get himself killed without you, and I will likely go along. Use your head."
-
His eyes studied her, wondering what she was so afraid of.
-
"I am changing my fate," he said slowly. "And you cannot stop me."
-
Feo turned away, stalking through shelves, and forcing himself not to look at the table that he knew where Milo and Lucius sat, making his way out of the library.

Milo shook his head a couple of times before letting out a small breath. This was going to be a really stupid plan and he was fully prepared for that. What sort of plan, he wasn't sure. Was it just throwing hands? Or was it something more?

"Maybe you should talk with Feo," Milo said quietly. "Get... get him on it?"

Lucius let out a dry laugh and stood up, setting the books back in place--barring one. He needed to check it out and find a willing Egyptian spell-caster. "Are you kidding? There's no way he'd actually go for it. There's no way he'd actually listen to me," he prompted as well before letting out a short noise, almost a weary breath. "Nobody really does, they just pretend to. They all laugh along, say it's a good idea or whatever but they never actually care or they never meant to do anything about it. It's always words and never action."

Milo trailed after him, walking through the shelves of books toward the front desk. The woman checked the book out and Lucius walked toward the front door with the book in his arm. "But what if he does?"

"He won't," Lucius replied loosely. "Besides, right now, I need to find a willing spell-caster to help me."

Milo let out a loose groan. He hadn't ever thought he would be that guy but there he was, saying the exact phrase; "I might know a guy."

Granted, that "guy" was Flynn. Flynn Evans. Flynn was a supposed "son" of the Egyptian god, Ptah. Son was a loose term. He was a creation of the god that had lasted the longest out of all of them. The blond brainless hunk of flesh was at least kind. He had more heart than brain at the very least. He was one of the few light-aligned demigods that nobody really made fun of, or attacked--or anything. He helped everybody and... unfortunately, he was painfully ... on the less-than-smart side when it came to a lot of things.

Which was exactly why he would be the person to help Lucius out.

"Really?" Lucius paused and glanced back at him. "Who?"

"... his name is Flynn," Milo began wearily, guiding him toward the third year dorms. "He does a lot of Egyptian spell-work and whatnot, he's in college to be an architect but he's got no enemies. You can't piss him off, no matter how hard you try, he looks like a typical Californian beach boy and has enough power to do what you're looking for."

Lucius tilted his head a couple times before shrugging. It couldn't hurt right?

"Weird."

"Please, never mention it," Milo said flatly. "He's... there are marbles sharper than him. I try to avoid him for that reason."

Feo didn’t look back as he walked, the crisp night air biting at his cheeks. Lilian followed, keeping her distance at first, but her steps quickened until she matched his pace.
-
“You’re not going to convince me to stop,” he said without looking at her.
-
“I’m not here to stop you,” she replied evenly. “I’m here because someone has to watch your back.”
-
He stopped abruptly, turning to face her. “I don’t need a babysitter, Lilian.”
-
“I’m not your babysitter,” she shot back. “I’m your friend. And maybe the only person here who’s willing to say this: you’re about to walk into a trap.”
-
Feo’s jaw tightened. “I know what I’m doing.”
-
“Do you?” she challenged. “You’re angry, Feo. And you should be. Loki’s done unspeakable things to you, and you deserve to fight back. But marching in there without a plan isn’t bravery—it’s recklessness.”
-
He stared at her, his fists clenched. Her words stung because they held a kernel of truth. “What else am I supposed to do?” he demanded. “Keep running? Keep hiding? Let him keep pulling strings?”
-
“No,” she said firmly. “You face him. But not like this. Not alone. Not without knowing what you’re up against.”
-
“I don’t have time for careful planning,” Feo snapped. “Every day I wait, he gets stronger. I have to act now.”
-
“Then let me help you,” Lilian insisted. “We’ll find a way to do this that doesn’t end with you dead—or worse.”
-
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The tension between them crackled like static, but beneath it was an unspoken understanding.
-
Finally, Feo sighed, the fire in his eyes dimming just slightly. “Fine. You can come. But if this goes bad, you get out. Promise me, Lilian.”
-
She hesitated, then nodded. “Only if you promise not to throw yourself at him without thinking.”
-
He gave her a wry smile, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “I’ll try.”
-
“That’s all I ask,” she said softly.

Milo slipped into the dorm, reluctantly reaching to find his roommate. Flynn... Flynn Evans wasn't mean, he wasn't terribly dumb either but he lacked... common sense, sometimes. He looked like the typical beach boy, the surfer from California. He was a looker, that was for sure. But he lacked any sense of flirting. Cues and that sort of thing went right over his head, which was unfortunate. But it was what it was.

"I need your help," Milo explained as Flynn looked up when he burst into the dorm room. "Just... hear me out--"

"Nah, you're good, dude," Flynn stood up from the wooden chair. "If you need help then it must be important. Come on, you can explain on the way."

Milo reluctantly sighed and bobbed his head, talking to the future architect. He wasn't convinced that this wasn't a bad idea. But Flynn pointed out that it could be worse, he could either go along with him or he could watch from a distance and live with the regret of wishing he had done something.

"I'm just worried he's going to get hurt," Milo mumbled quietly, pausing just before they went out the doors. His brown eyes flicked toward the glass and then down to the floor. "I don't want him to get hurt. It doesn't seem fair."

"Life isn't fair," Flynn let out a warm chuckle, clapped his shoulder and lead him outside. "That's exactly what makes it life. If it were fair? What would we really do? We wouldn't be here that's for sure. Life is full of problems and imbalance, it's up to us to either right the balance or tip it further."

Milo looked back at him, having to look up at the man. "... that's like the smartest thing that's come out of your mouth since you've been here."

"Heard it once from Dad," Flynn responded, his eyes turning to the sky. "God of creation and whatnot, he's got a few ideas and solid advice. Anyways, your friend?"

"Right, right," Milo turned around on his feet, his gaze sweeping the smaller courtyard in front of the dorms. "There, Lucius!"

"Lucius? He's that kid that--"

"Yeah, yeah, don't talk about it," Milo cut him off with a wave of his hand. Whatever smarts he had shown had clearly left.

Lucius lifted his head and walked toward them, the book in his arm as he stepped toward the other two men. "Flynn?"

"The very same. You must be Lucius," Flynn extended his hand, taking Lucius's in his own. He gave it a firm shake before stepping back. "What can I help you with?"

"This watch," Lucius held it out to him. "Can you enchant it to hide my wings?"

"Oh--uh--well--"

"I found this spell," Lucius opened the book, flipped to the page and turned it around to show the man. "Will it work?"

"... you really did your research actually," Flynn seemed rather surprised before looking over the words, squinting lightly. Milo rolled his eyes and fished in his pockets, holding the spectacles out to Flynn.

"Thanks," he set them on the bridge of his nose. "... yeah, that should work."

"What do I owe you?"

"Dude, I dunno. A candy bar?"

"Bet--"

Lucius was up in the air in mere seconds, leaving him with a feather for the spell.

It was mere minutes later that Lucius placed the watch on his wrist and watched with a vibrant fascination as the fluffy creamy white wings vanished from sight. He could still feel them but they were weightless--more or less. He laid back on the grass and he felt nothing but grass behind him. "Holy catfish," he whispered. "This is fantastic."

Milo flashed him a weary smile. "Go get some dinner. The cafeteria should still be open."

"What about you?"

"I still have some unpacking to do," Milo commented lightly walking back to the dorm with Flynn in tow.

Lucius looked up at the sky, scanning the dusky clouds with his sapphire eyes. The sun had set, leaving the edges of light on the tips of the clouds. The stars held behind them in a velvet cushion.

He finally stood up, a touch unbalanced without the weight of the winds before he started forward, heading toward the distant cafeteria. For a moment, though, he spotted a flash of blue hair. Lilian--and farther ahead, Feo.

His eyes narrowed briefly before he paused. Was it a really stupid idea--yes. Yes it was. Even he knew that. And as far as he was concerned, that wasn't his problem. They could go and do whatever.

He... needed food apparently.

The two made their way silently up to the astronomy tower, their steps echoing faintly against the stone staircase. Lilian had chosen the location for its solitude, confident no one would disturb them there, while Feo saw it as the safest place to talk without risking an escape from campus. The air grew cooler the higher they climbed, and the faint hum of evening activity below seemed a distant world away.
-
When they reached the classroom at the top, the last rays of sunlight painted the room in hues of orange and pink. Feo eased himself down onto the cold floor, his gaze fixed upward. The ceiling was open, revealing a vast expanse of sky, where clouds drifted lazily above their heads. Lilian joined him, sitting cross-legged beside him. She gently untangled Varmire, the golden-scaled serpent coiled tightly around Feo's arm, and set her on the floor before them.
-
"How does this work?" Lilian asked, her voice quiet but curious as her eyes remained fixed on the glittering serpent.
-
Feo stared at Varmire for a moment, his hand absentmindedly stroking the smooth scales on her head. "She's done it before," he murmured. "In emergencies. I just don’t know how to make her do it. She just… did it on her own."
-
Lilian tilted her head slightly, watching Feo’s expression as he spoke. There was something distant in his tone, something weighed down by uncertainty. He paused, thinking deeply, and then leaned closer to Varmire.
-
"Var?" Feo said softly. The serpent lifted her head, her golden eyes meeting his. "Can you… do the thing you did? Contact my father?"
-
Varmire curled her tail around herself in a deliberate motion, as though considering his words.
-
"Loki?" Feo asked again, his voice tinged with hesitation.
-
This time, Varmire's scales began to emit a faint glow, a light that grew steadily brighter. Within seconds, the golden serpent transformed into a radiant orb of light, her form dissolving until she was nothing but a shining beacon. The room grew warm, and the glow illuminated every corner, casting long, distorted shadows.
-
"Son?" came a voice, cracking through the stillness like a sudden storm. It was panicked, raw, and tinged with pain. A faint rumble seemed to follow, vibrating faintly through the stone walls.
-
"Loki?" Feo asked, his throat dry. The name came out softer than he intended, but the response was immediate.
-
"Asrifeon!" the voice boomed, loud enough to make Lilian flinch and press her hands over her ears.
-
Feo’s heart pounded as he heard the anguish in his father’s tone. He hadn’t expected it, hadn’t prepared for the jarring intensity of the moment.
-
"Asrifeon!" Loki called again, the name resonating with power and desperation. "Please… what do you need, son?"
-
Feo swallowed hard, his breath catching as he gathered his thoughts. His father’s voice was so close, so overwhelming, that it was difficult to think clearly.
-
"Father," Feo began, his voice trembling but determined. "I know your purpose for me." He took a steadying breath. "And I am done being your plaything."
-
For a moment, silence filled the room, broken only by the faint hum of Varmire's glow.
-
Then, to Feo’s surprise, Loki’s voice returned, barely a whisper. "…What?"
-
Feo glanced at Lilian, but her face was unreadable, her gaze fixed on the radiant serpent.
-
"You…" Loki’s laughter broke through, sharp and bitter, like shattered glass. "You think you’re my plaything?"
-
"Yes," Feo muttered, the word heavy with years of pent-up resentment. "I’ve been nothing but that my entire life. None of your children were willing to help you, so you made me—and forced me to."
-
The silence that followed was suffocating. Feo’s own heartbeat was deafening in his ears as he waited for Loki’s response.
-
When it came, the voice was unrecognizable—cold, sharp, and twisted with fury. "I will find you, you conniving brat," Loki snarled. "I will escape, and I will find you, and I will use you. I will turn you into a shriveled-up, powerless nothing. I will steal whatever pathetic life you’ve built with those demigods. I don’t know what lies they’ve put into your head, but you are mine. And you will always be—"
-
Before he could finish, Lilian moved swiftly. She placed both her hands firmly over Varmire, as if shielding Feo from the light. Slowly, the glow began to fade, leaving the room dim once more. The warmth dissipated, replaced by the chill of the eve-ning.
"You’re not his," Lilian said softly, her voice steady but filled with quiet determination. "He can do nothing to you."
-
Feo remained silent, his hands clenched tightly at his sides. Yet, as the room fell into stillness, he felt it—a faint tremor beneath him, a vibration that seemed to come from the ground itself. It wasn’t his imagination. Something was stirring, something ominous and real.
-
And it wasn’t over.

Lucius watched them shuffle off with a guarded expression. He didn't care. Right? He didn't. Well, maybe part of him did. But the majority of him didn't. It was clear to him that Feo couldn't do anything without Lilian behind him. Well, Lucius wasn't like that. He did things anyways, whether or not there was someone behind him helping him along the way or not. If he had to do it all by himself, he would. And he wouldn't care. He couldn't afford to care at all. That wasn't who he was.

Lucius stepped forward but somehow, he found himself without much of an appetite. He wanted to get moving, get going, instead of just staying there without doing anything. He had a plan, he wanted to get started on it. The longer he waited, the longer out that end goal would end up being.

He pulled the watch from his wrist and stuffed it in his pocket as the creamy white wings unfurled from his back. The silver moonlight caught on the white feathers as they reached up to soak in the moonlight. His head tipped back toward the sky, opening his eyes to look up toward the stars above him. The way they shone like crushed glass out from the inky depths of a velvet cushion. Like diamonds from a felt carpet that stretched out over the sky.

If he flew high enough, maybe, just maybe, he could reach out and touch some of them. The way they called down to the ground below achingly.

But he knew that was just as foolish as Icarus. Fly too close to sun, a watery grave. There was no reaching the stars, an endless goal.

But the ripple of the feeling stirred him and touched his feelings and feathers. There was something in the air that caught his attention, something... had changed. It was the rush of an unseen wind--something unfelt by those who weren't in tune with it. The rush of change, the breathless sigh of something letting go of what once was. But it held a tinge of relief. It was only a tinge, it wasn't full of joy or relief. Oh, no. No, this wind of change came with a rush of fury.

Something had changed, shifted to the side, and whoever it was... wasn't happy about it. Whatever had changed had pissed them off.

Lucius couldn't help it when his sapphire eyes turned in the dark of the night toward the direction where he had seen Lilian and Feo head off to.

He wasn't sure where they had gone but... a part of him was now curious and nosy. If not cautious. His wings spread out, swept down and took him upward into the starry sky. His eyes narrowed, struggling to peer through the darkness to find the blue hair--Lilian would be easier to spot than Feo would. But he couldn't see them in the garden below or really anywhere on campus. So what had happened?

The force of change was powerful, it rang with fury and power. It couldn't have been a demigod, they wouldn't have that type of power to swirl the air.

Feo scooped up Varmire with care, the small, coiled form warm against his chest. He glanced briefly at Lilian, his amber eyes meeting hers, and offered her a small, almost imperceptible nod. Concern was etched into her features, her lips parting as if to call after him, but she stopped herself. She knew better. This was something she couldn’t follow him into, no matter how much she wanted to.
-
Without another word, Feo turned on his heel and strode away, his steps quickening as he descended the winding staircase. The air grew heavier the further he went, pressing against him like an invisible weight. He didn’t look back. He couldn’t. He needed space. He needed solitude.
-
He needed to outrun the name echoing in his mind.
-
Loki.
-
And, beneath that name, something darker, something colder—himself.
-
Feo's pace quickened, his boots striking the stone steps in a rhythmic cadence until he hit the ground floor. As soon as he did, he broke into a sprint, his limbs moving with an urgency that bordered on desperation. The sleek, graceful shift of muscle and bone followed naturally, seamlessly, as he transformed mid-stride into the form of a wolf. His fur shimmered under the dim torchlight, a dark blur streaked with silver, the golden serpent coiled around his neck gleaming like a brand.
-
The halls were eerily quiet. It was dinnertime, and most of the students were gathered elsewhere, their laughter and chatter muffled by distance and thick stone walls. The few who lingered in the corridors barely had time to register the wolf’s presence before he zipped past them, a streak of speed and shadow. Someone shouted after him, but Feo paid no attention. He ran.
-
His paws thundered against the ground, his breaths coming in sharp bursts. The walls blurred around him until he burst out into the cool night air. The sky stretched above him, vast and endless, scattered with stars that seemed to mock his turmoil with their quiet constancy.
-
Feo didn’t stop running until he reached the gardens, their meticulously maintained beauty spreading out around him like an oasis. The plants stood in perfect order, their leaves and petals unmarred by neglect. The scent of flowers and damp earth filled the air, but Feo barely noticed.
-
The transformation back into his humanoid form was abrupt. One moment, he was a wolf; the next, he was kneeling in the grass, his hands clutching at the ground as though it might anchor him. The serpent around his neck slithered slightly, adjusting her coils, but Feo paid her no mind.
-
He clenched his jaw, the muscles twitching with the effort to hold himself together, but it was a futile fight. The tears came, unbidden and unstoppable, carving silent paths down his cheeks. His body trembled, his shoulders shaking as he bent forward, his forehead nearly touching the grass.
-
He couldn’t remember the last time he’d cried. Seven years ago? Eight? Nine? The memory was a blur, buried under layers of self-control and denial. Yet here he was, unraveling under the pale light of the moon, his sobs muffled but no less raw.

Feo curled into himself, his arms wrapping tightly around his torso and knee as though to shield him from a blow that had already landed. The fear coursed through him like a living thing, icy and unrelenting. He could feel it in his chest, in his bones, in the earth beneath him, which seemed to tremble in sympathy with his anguish.
-
Varmire stirred again, her golden scales catching the moonlight, but she did not speak. She simply lay still, a silent observer of his breaking point.
-
He was dead.
-
The thought repeated itself, a relentless mantra in his mind. He was as good as dead.
-
And as he lay there, he came to another realization.
-
Asrifeon didn't want to die.

It was subtle movement from one window that initially caught his attention at first. His arms were tucked against his chest, watching the ground below him. For the most part, it was soundless, motionless--a sleepy world tucked in the dark of the night. But that was the moment that the motion caught his attention because it moved. It moved quickly. There was a flurry to the way whatever they were moved. Lucius angled his wings, trailing after the thing. He could keep track of it in the hallways, the way people moved out of the way of whatever it was and then it burst from the door. With silent beats, Lucius trailed after the wolf. At least he figured it was a wolf. That's what it looked like. But there was a flash of gold around the neck of the beast.

It told him most of what he needed to know. Through the empty streets, over the grounds of the flight class and into the beauty of the silent garden and that was when beast turned back to man.

The figure curled inward on themselves. Lucius recognized that motion, the tears that fell, shoulders shaking as everything came crashing down. As suddenly your world wasn't yours anymore.

He circled for a few moments before slowly gliding downward, following a larger circle each time he drew around. The wind that ruffled around his feathers as he finally settled on the ground with a quiet rush of feathers.

Lucius was mostly silent, watching from behind him. It was, in all reality, Feo. He had curled inward, tucking around himself as if he had taken a few hits. But he didn't seem injured at all.

Something had happened. The rush of change radiated from this demigod--which was partially why he had trailed him for so long. But it was the icy cold fear that held the winged demigod back from coming close. Whatever had happened had drawn the fury out from the god and a paralyzing fear from this young man instead.

So he stayed there, behind him. His wings weren't even folded, they remained outward, as if a shield of sorts.

Lucius debated on speaking, a couple of times. But what could he really say?

Did he ask what had happened? Did he offer to let Feo join him in his journey? Or was silence a better option?

Lucius shifted his weight from one foot to the other as he looked up toward the stars and then down to Feo once again.

The words drew to his tongue and he let them fall to shatter the fragile silence.

"The gods are worth nothing," Lucius drew his edged sword from his words, laying it out for Feo to take, or see, at the least. "They care nothing for the lives that they ruin or bring to this fragile existence. You know that now as well as I do..."

He paused for a moment before his expression softened. "You're not worthless. You are more than they will ever know," Lucius extended his hand out to the demigod in front of him, "help me show them the truth. That we are more than what they think and that we deserve their respect. Come with me... and I will help you see who you truly are. You are more than his pawn. You, Asrifeon, are more than a name. More than a face--you are a person. You are someone and you know the best part?"

Lucius felt a flash of fire in his chest.

"You get to choose your destiny. You get to have a choice. Let me help you," his tone dropped to a breathless whisper, "I promise I will."

Or he'd die trying.

Feo lay there for what felt like an eternity, his body trembling in the moonlight, his sobs barely contained. Time seemed to stretch on, an endless void of emotion and exhaustion, until a voice pierced the stillness.
-
Lucius's voice was softer than Feo expected, but the sound of it still made his spine stiffen. The sudden break in the quiet was enough to jolt Feo upright, his heart racing as he quickly wiped his face, trying in vain to mask the evidence of his breakdown. His expression blanked immediately, a mask of control snapping into place, though it did little to hide the tear streaks that glistened on his cheeks under the soft, silvery glow of the moon.
-
Lucius didn’t need to say anything else. The words came out of Feo in a rush, as if they were escaping before he could stop them.
-
"I tried to have a choice," Feo's voice cracked, broken from the weight of the emotions he'd been trying to stifle. "I tried. And for a moment, I thought he cared. But now he's going to find some way to kill me. I'm as good as dead."
-
Feo's words hung in the air, heavy with defeat, as he swallowed hard against the lump in his throat. The last vestiges of his control crumbled with each word he spoke. "I can't—" he choked, before continuing with a painful whisper, "I can't keep fighting it."
-
He blinked rapidly, trying to fight the resurgence of tears, but they came anyway, hot and relentless. Feo didn’t even try to wipe them away this time. He could feel the tears falling, mixing with the dirt and grass beneath him. "Don't waste your time on me, Lucius. Maybe if you'd done this before I did anything reckless, then we could have changed my fate. But I'm done. I am dead. So… don't waste your time, okay?"
-
The last words were barely more than a rasp, a reflection of how empty he felt inside. His throat tightened, and he shut his eyes, wishing he could escape it all—wishing he could erase everything that had led him to this moment. "I wouldn't waste my time on a hopeless cause, either," he muttered bitterly.
-
The silence that followed was suffocating. Feo opened his eyes slowly, forcing himself to focus as he untangled Varmire from his neck. He held her in his hands for a moment, his fingers brushing over her smooth, cold scales, but then he placed her on the ground. The serpent slithered back toward him instinctively, but Feo, too tired to argue with her, pushed her away.
-
"Go," he whispered hoarsely, his voice raw and fragile. When she didn’t move, he repeated the command, this time louder, with more urgency. "Go!"
-
Varmire paused, staring at him with those cold, unblinking eyes, her serpentine form still as she seemed to hesitate. Then, as if she finally understood, she slithered away into the shadows, disappearing between the thick bushes with a final flicker of gold.
-
Feo watched her leave, his breath shaky, and then he drew his knees to his chest, curling up into a ball, burying his face in his hands. It was the only thing he could do to try and contain the storm raging inside him. His shoulders shook with the weight of it, but he no longer cared. Lucius was still there, but Feo didn’t have the energy to pretend he could handle the situation.
-
What worse could Lucius possibly see? He was already a broken shell of the person he used to be. What was left? What else was there to expose?
