The dry skepticism was something that Lucius was expecting. That was not out of the ordinary and he had been well-prepared for that tone to come from the Nordic demigod. If Feo expected him to be rethinking his plan, it wasn't going to work just yet.

Instead, as Feo leaned back against the post... well, the grin that Lucius wore grew a bit more into a rather confident expression again--if not a touch smug. He did think nobody would bat an eye. He didn't have a reputation, he was simply nobody special or important. Nobody was going to care. That was the idea.

Besides, it wasn't like anything could really go wrong. Nobody knew the plan, it wasn't going to hurt anyone--they weren't taking weapons with them, at least he wasn't. It was a simple little thing. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing bad... it didn't even really have any sort of ill-willed implications on the surface. They were just going to see the Cestus of Aphrodite.

Before he could respond stating such, Feo continued. Disaster only happened if you lost control of the situation, Lucius had repeated to himself. As of right now, he still felt like he had control on the situation. If the Cestus didn't work out, well, there was a river calling his name.

Lucius knew about lies and how easy it was. His mother was never one for full honesty and it had... inadvertently rubbed off on him. Why tell the whole truth if it was going to hurt someone or if they weren't going to let you do what you wanted to do? Especially if what you wanted to do didn't hurt anyone?

But there was a touch of worry behind the expression that Feo gave him, his voice lowering. For once, Lucius almost second-guessed himself. But he shook that thought off and waved his hands--both hands--and let out a small noise.

"Nobody is going to bat an eye," he echoed with confidence, "we've got this. Disaster only potentially happens once you lose control of the situation. It's not out of control and, last I checked, it's idiot proof. We're not taking weaponry, we aren't going to kill anybody," yet, he added mentally, "we're just going out to see if we can't find it. It's simple, it's easy, it's harmless. I don't have the wings," Lucius shook his shoulders loosely, "which means I can figure my way out of things either way. Besides, I can always bring them back in the blink of an eye."

Lucius finally bobbed his head in addressing the questions. "We start now," he confirmed brightly. "It's rather simple, we mix ourselves into the middle of the crowd, we follow everyone else being shuffled outside of campus and then we just wait with everybody else to get our own taxi," he stepped forward, gesturing for Feo to follow him. "It's easy as pie. That's the beauty of it. Nobody's going to notice because right now? We're nobody special, there's a whole bunch of special first year students that need attention. Us? Nah, not at all."

Lucius gave him a lopsided smile, tipping his head lightly as he slid into the crowd.

Feo let out a soft, almost imperceptible groan as Lucius slid into the crowd with that damnably confident grin. For a moment, he didn’t move, letting the other demigod disappear among the throng of students. He pressed his lips together tightly, his jaw clenching as Lucius’s words repeated in his mind.
-
"It's idiot proof," Lucius had said. Feo almost laughed bitterly. If there was one universal truth in Feo’s experience, it was that no plan was truly idiot proof—especially when Lucius was involved, from what he'd already learned about him.
-
With a quiet sigh, Feo pushed off the post and followed, weaving his way through the crowd with ease. His Nordic heritage gave him an advantage in a crowd like this—his tall, broad frame and sharp eyes made people instinctively step aside. Perhaps his alignment and his reputation also had something to do with that, but Feo could care less what this college of useless handfuls of demigods thought of him.
-
As he caught sight of Lucius up ahead, Feo quickened his pace until he was walking just behind him, close enough to be heard but far enough to avoid being conspicuous.
-
“Just so we’re clear,” Feo said, his voice low but audible enough for Lucius to hear over the din of the crowd, “if this goes sideways—and it will—I’m not bailing you out unless I absolutely have to. I’ve got a reputation to uphold, and cleaning up your messes doesn’t exactly scream ‘impressive.’”
-
There was a faint smirk on Feo’s lips, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. He wasn’t lying, but he also wasn’t sure he could follow through on that threat. Something about Lucius made it hard to leave him to his own devices, no matter how much Feo told himself otherwise.
-
Still, Feo wasn’t about to make this easy. As they moved toward the edge of the campus, he fell into step beside Lucius, his gaze scanning the crowd for any sign of trouble. The tension in his shoulders never quite eased, and his gaze darted from face to face, noting every detail.
-
“You might think nobody’s going to notice,” he added after a beat, his voice quieter now, “but you don’t exactly blend in as well as you think you do. Confidence like yours is hard to miss. Just... try not to draw too much attention.”
-
Feo’s tone wasn’t unkind, but it carried an edge of practicality. He knew Lucius well enough by now to understand that subtlety wasn’t exactly his strong suit. If they were going to pull this off without a hitch, it would take more than just charm and blind luck.
-
And if Lucius didn’t have a backup plan, well... Feo had a feeling he’d end up improvising one for the both of them.

Piecing through the crowd was easy now. He felt like a bird in the air and less like he had to keep from bumping into everyone. There were no hands sneaking to tug a feather or two away from the white wings that usually adorned his back. His ears caught the sound of footsteps behind him and he glanced back just slightly. The imposing figure was familiar, and so was the voice.

Lucius let out a small laugh. "You aren't bailing anybody out because it won't go sideways," he insisted in return and waved one hand minutely. "You worry too much. Besides, if it does go south... just run, ha--"

His eyes turned back to the crowd, slowing his pace a touch as the crowd grew bigger and thicker. This was perfect. Tuck himself into the middle of the 'leaving' crew and nobody would notice at all.

Feo worried too much. He was overthinking too much and it showed. Lucius never did because there was always a way out of things. Quick timed decisions in times of distress worked far better than preplanned messes and worrying over things that could only potentially happen.

Lucius glanced toward the edges of the crowd, listening to Feo. "Psh," he slowed his step again, lowering his gaze to the ground. "It's all going to work off. Just look a little sad," his expression fell slightly, "a little wistful. If nothing else. Match theirs, they're the ones leaving someone here to start a new chapter in their life. While they get to go back to their mediocre lives."

His hand lifted up, rubbing the side of his arm. "A touch of relief because they got here safely but wist, because it won't be the same anymore. The student isn't the same bright-eyed little kid that they once knew," he couldn't keep a touch of an edge to his voice from escaping out.

It wasn't like he had anyone to do that for him. No, he had done it all on his own. But he had kept those looks in his mind, he had often wondered why at first. But then it had clicked in his head. His experience, his so-called family was not the standard. Nor was it ideal in the slightest. Father? Nonexistent. Mother? Pretty much the same and even then, when she had tried to supposedly turn around, it was because she was sick and wasn't going to live longer.

But she was so aloof for the good majority of his childhood, so it didn't really catch with Lucius. Relationships were solely a superficial thing at best. While he knew better now, it still wasn't... entirely clicking in his head.

But hey, they said fake it till you make it and he figured, one day, he'd make it.

Lucius risked a glance upward toward the edge of campus. His heart skipped a beat, still pressed in the middle of the crowd. This was perfect. Absolutely perfect.

Feo’s sharp eyes lingered on Lucius for a moment as he watched the other demigod blend—or attempt to blend—into the crowd. The laugh, the dismissive wave, the casual instructions to “look sad” and “match theirs” might have been convincing to someone else, but not to Feo. He saw the cracks beneath the bravado, the faint edge to Lucius’s voice when he spoke of parents and wistful looks.
-
Something about his tone told Feo that there was more going on under the surface than Lucius let on.
-
Lucius had perfected the art of playing it cool, but Feo had spent enough time reading people to know when someone was putting on a show. He didn’t call him out on it—not outright—but the tension in his jaw eased as he adjusted his approach.
-
Slipping through the crowd, Feo sidled up next to Lucius, instead of behind him, his movements unhurried, casual. For a moment, he matched Lucius’s pace, his expression blank but his presence steady.
-
“You’ve thought about this a lot,” Feo said, his voice low enough to stay beneath the general hum of the crowd. He wasn’t looking directly at Lucius, his gaze scanning ahead as they neared the streets moving away from the college, but his tone was unmistakably pointed. “The wistful looks, the sad smiles. The whole leaving-it-behind thing.”
-
His arms hung loosely at his sides, but there was a tension in the set of his shoulders, a readiness that never quite left him. “You’ve got it all figured out, huh? What it’s supposed to look like. What it’s supposed to feel like.”
-
He let the words hang there for a beat, his tone free of judgment but heavy with implication. Feo wasn’t trying to push Lucius, but he also wasn’t about to let him deflect too easily. If Lucius wanted to bury his own feelings in bravado and quick escapes, that was his business. But Feo didn’t like feeling like he was part of someone else’s distraction.
-
“I’ll give you this, though,” Feo added after a pause, his voice softer now, almost teasing. “You’ve got the act down. Sad, wistful—hell, you might even fool me if I didn’t know better.”
-
There was a flicker of a smirk on Feo’s lips as he glanced at Lucius out of the corner of his eye. It wasn’t a full grin, but it was close enough. “Still doesn’t mean I’m not keeping an eye on you. You get caught? I’m not dragging your sorry ass out of trouble. You’ll owe me big if I do.”
-
As they neared the edge of the crowd, Feo’s attention sharpened again. His gaze darted toward the edges of the campus, scanning for anything out of the ordinary. Whatever Lucius was planning, Feo was determined to stay one step ahead—if not for Lucius’s sake, then for his own.
-
Feo made quick work of shifting, increasing his height slightly and matching his style of clothing to that of Lucius's, a more casual wear that fit him a bit more loosely, but the boots stayed the same, and the pouch remained upon his hip. His skin tanned a little, and his eyes shifted to a muted brown, his hair to a similar shade. If anyone saw him, especially with a light-aligned, he'd be wrecked.
-
Best to not let the student body know he was trailing behind—and essentially, fawning over—this boy.

Lucius felt his heart skip a few beats as Feo commented vaguely on the tone he had let slip. He'd... he would have to remember to keep a tighter hold on his tone. He couldn't always get away with it like he could with others. Clearly. They would just give him a pity look and move on, not willing to dig in deeper.

No, Feo tried to pry in.

Lucius didn't meet his gaze, slightly stewing on the comments he was making. He'd didn't have time to think about it right now. He'd had to focus on being something else right now.

"You see it enough," Lucius let a looser tone slip into his voice, deflecting the emotions that he was feeling, "you figure out how to mirror it. Just think of a few memories to mirror the emotions and it'll show on your face--ugh--you're not going--we're not going to get caught," he lowered his tone and shook his head.

Feo was so determined that somehow they were going to get caught, that something was going to go wrong. There was nothing that was going to go wrong.

They were tucked in the middle of a shuffling crowd. They didn't look any different, nobody was really paying attention. They were more focused on what was coming in the campus than what was going out. Nobody cared about what went out, they only cared about what went in. Were they dangerous, were they special, did they have any special accommodation needs? Stuff like that. Nobody cared who was leaving.

He knew well enough. He would owe him? Oh, Lucius knew that already. A part of him was curious as to what Feo would require as payment. Probably money. Probably.

But he was refusing to let his mind wander too much to his own feelings and thoughts. They could... they could talk about it on the plane. Not right now. The stakes were too high to even think about thinking about it.

Just a little farther and they'd be beyond the gates of campus. Lost in the crowd, able to walk farther away, catch a taxi and get them to the airport. Good. A few more steps.

"You ready?" Lucius flashed him a lopsided and wry smile, keeping a touch of wist in his expression. The sort of look that asked him if he was ready for what was going to happen, the look that shared between a few others. The weary smile of 'things aren't going to be the same the moment we step through' and a touch of hesitation. Would they be ready for how things would change?

Lucius didn't particularly care too much, he wouldn't admit it but he always had thought of himself as slightly disposable. Better him than anyone else, right?

The only, relatively new, issue with that... was the fact that suddenly there was a Nordic demigod that seemed to care about him in a way he wasn't sure he understood. Maybe it was because he didn't know him all the way yet. That was probably it.

Feo watched Lucius carefully, catching the faint flicker of something beneath his confident exterior. He didn’t push—it wasn’t the time—but the way Lucius deflected, his tone growing lighter and almost flippant, only made Feo more certain that there was a storm brewing beneath the surface.
-
“You’re impossible, you know that?” Feo muttered, though there was no real venom in his voice. He shifted his weight slightly, his arms still loosely crossed as they walked. His eyes stayed forward, scanning the gates they were rapidly approaching, but he didn’t miss the way Lucius carried himself—a little too loose, a little too forced.
-
When Lucius flashed him that wry, almost wistful smile, Feo felt his chest tighten, though he didn’t let it show. There was something about that look that felt heavier than it should have, and it gnawed at him in a way he couldn’t quite shake.
-
“Am I ready?” Feo echoed, his voice dry but quieter now. “I think you’re asking the wrong question, Lucius. The real question is—are we, as a whole? Because it seems like we both have outlooks on the situation that don't quite match.”
-
He glanced at Lucius then, his now brown eyes meeting the other demigod’s for just a moment before turning back to the crowd. Feo didn’t know everything about Lucius yet, but he knew enough to recognize the signs. That smile wasn’t for Feo’s benefit—it was a mask, one Lucius wore a little too well.
-
A mask Feo recognized easily, for it was one he wore frequently.
-
Still, Feo wasn’t about to call him out on it, not here, not now. He adjusted his pace to match Lucius’s, his movements relaxed but deliberate. He’d learned long ago how to balance his natural intensity with a more inconspicuous demeanor, and it served him well now.
-
“I will put it out there that I trust you," he said, his voice calm, after pausing for a moment. "Part of me expects this to work. But most of this plan is up to us not fucking it up, and you should sure as hell expect me to fuck it up."
-
He let the words hang there for a moment before continuing, his voice softening slightly. “I’m not saying it’s a bad plan, Lucius. You’ve thought it through better than I expected. But I'm not.." he sighed. "I'm not the invincible, all powerful, all evil demigod that they seem to think I am." He knows that he's told Lucius this before, but he wanted to make sure he understood. "I don't know if I'll be able to save us if things really do go south. I.. I don't think I could ever save anyone."
-
Feo’s gaze flicked to the gates ahead, his expression tightening as they drew closer. His instincts were on high alert now, and he couldn’t help but feel like they were walking a fine line. If Lucius was entirely confident in this plan, then Feo would see it through—if only because he didn’t trust anyone else to watch Lucius’s back.
-
"I'm doing this for you," he mumbled. "I'm doing it for your cause and because I don't want you dead. You are much too—" he paused and tried to find a word that wasn't too.. much. "Don't die," he finished instead.

Impossible? Ha! Now he was getting closer to the truth. Lucius had a feeling that he'd only continue to earn that "ticket" or title or whatever. Which he didn't mind. It would prove to Feo that he wasn't really all that great when it came to friendship and whatnot. It was one less person that Feo really had to worry about.

Or, so was the hope at least.

"Relax," Lucius replied to his insistence, turning to meet his gaze. "It's all going to be fine. Nothing is going to go wrong--we're just going to see if we can't find a little mythical item. There's no harm done."

He nearly opened his mouth again to add that Feo just needed to trust him when he said it himself. Not--there wasn't much to screw up in the plan at this point. It was a rather simple plan with no real risks to go wrong.

"So you don't have to," Lucius said lightly, "don't worry about saving anyone but you. I can hold my own--just because it doesn't look like it doesn't mean I can't. But there's literally nothing that can go wrong. We're not confronting any beasts, we're not trying to fight anything, we're not stealing--technically--we're just seeing if it is where it says it is," he waved his hand lightly and turned to look ahead again, keeping track of the crowd as they passed through the gates. Don't die.

The words sent a small chill down his spine. If his wings had been on display, a rush of rippling white feathers would have coursed down his wings. He... he didn't... really mean that. Right? Of course not. Lucius wasn't that special to anyone. He was just there, just a minor background figure in the lives of everybody, he really didn't mean that much to anyone.

Let alone this demigod who had met him two days ago.

Lucius cared about him, of course he did. That was different. He could see potential and a demigod who could be something more than just a pawn. He could see Feo becoming something incredible, something amazing--something and someone far beyond what he could even imagine.

But to turn that on himself? To think about what he could become? There was no way. Lucius was only meant to be the winged one. The faux angel.

A dazzling smile, the touch of golden hair, a sweep of white feathers and nothing more. If he was meant to be something, he wouldn't have grown up the way he had. He would've had someone telling him he was special, showing him how to be special. It wouldn't have been him more or less surviving on his own with the vague eyes of supervision from the houses and demigods around him.

He took in a freeing breath as they passed through the gates of campus, stepping onto the sidewalk just outside. People were filing into vans, trucks, some were on buses and the long line of taxis waited for anyone to jump inside.

"Told you," he nudged Feo's side, "we're outside, nothing happened and now we can catch a taxi."

Feo sighed heavily but bit his tongue, letting the words he wanted to snap hang in the back of his throat. Instead, he fell into step behind Lucius, trailing close enough that anyone watching might mistake them for something more than acquaintances. It was clingy, he knew—too close for comfort, maybe—but Feo hoped Lucius wouldn’t notice, or at least wouldn’t mind. His own thoughts churned as they moved, his eyes flicking across the campus grounds, scanning the sparse patches of grass and the clusters of tired students trudging along the cracked pavement. He tried to summon some kind of clarity, a reason why he had agreed to this in the first place. But deep down, Feo already knew the answer. He hated admitting it, even to himself.
-
Instead of wrestling with his emotions, he let his mind drift elsewhere. Somewhere safer. A calm classical violin piece began to play in the back of his mind—soft, deliberate, the kind of music that pulled you under without effort. He focused on it, letting the notes swell and block out the noise around him. It was a habit he’d developed over the years, a way of coping when everything felt too loud, too much. This particular piece reminded him of the valkyries—those graceful, untouchable beings he couldn’t decide whether to admire or despise.
-
The thought of them brought Annasia to the forefront of his mind like a slap, sharp and unwelcome. Feo’s jaw tightened. He didn’t want to think about her, but the harder he tried to push her away, the more her image lingered: her perfect posture, her too-bright smile, her feathers that practically glittered in the sunlight. She was the epitome of everything that drove him up the wall. Still, Feo forced himself to think about the positive side of the valkyries—the ones who weren’t like her.
-
He thought of the confident ones, the badass ones who didn’t need to steal the spotlight or someone else’s boyfriend to feel important. Those were the valkyries he could tolerate, even respect. Maybe even like, if he was feeling particularly generous. But Annasia? Feo could barely keep the snarl off his face. She made him want to tear her shimmering wings off and throw them into a fire. He sighed again, shaking his head at himself. His anger was exhausting. Why did he let her get to him like this?
-
His gaze dropped to the ground as they walked, trying to find something—anything—to distract him. The pavement was cracked and uneven, a dull gray canvas dotted with dark stains. Feo tried to find patterns in the lines and shadows, imagining the cracks as rivers or canyons, but it wasn’t enough. The world around him felt flat and uninteresting, mirroring the knot of frustration in his chest.
-
For a moment, Feo felt a small, fleeting sense of relief. For now, he’d take the silence. It was better than any conversation that might reveal how much of a mess he was inside. Lucius didn't annoy him, as much as Feo tried to make it look as such, but the quiet was appreciated.

The outside air was similar to the air of campus but it was electrifying for Lucius. Part two, technically, was complete. Quite literally everything was going as perfectly as it could and that was beautiful. It fit together like clockwork gears, each one turning in time. If only, of course, the demigod behind him could see that inner working as well as he could. Plans that fell apart, fell apart because they were planning something dangerous. It was that concept, when danger became a part of the plan--when weaponry, when violence and the sorts--when that was involved, then plans had a higher chance of going out of control.

Lucius, at that point in time, had no plans for that just yet. But, if he did need to turn to that direction, he had a plan and a back-up plan and a back-up-back-up plan.

But that was a problem for later, right now he was focused on the now. He had to be. Feo had fallen silent behind him, not entirely lost in his own world but definitely in his own mind. Not that Lucius could blame him too much, this was probably a lot more than he had ever really known. The campus was never really that loud but out here in the bustling streets, the rumble of car engines, the shouts of people calling out directions or for taxis, the general hum of conversation over the rest... it could be a lot.

But that type of environment was the exact type of thing that Lucius wanted at that moment. Loud, bustling, hurrying, something to get lost into and no one would notice--if they did, it'd be far too late.

His hand stretched out, signaling one of the many yellow cars that sat beside the sidewalk and the other reached back to grab Feo's arm, pulling him into the taxi with him. It wasn't out of any real emotion, just habit to make sure that he was still there.

The taxi door closed, cutting out a lot of the outside noise. The man sitting in the driver's seat huffed and glanced back at them in the rearview mirror. His raised eyebrow gave off the question that he spoke in a rough and low voice. "Where?"

"Airport," Lucius responded with a brief smile and a nod. The smile was not reciprocated in the slightest but the taxi jerked into motion as he pulled into the thick of traffic.

Lucius leaned back--almost startled at the fact that he could lean back against a chair now. That was a new sensation, feeling something steady and firm against his shoulder blades that weren't feathered or pressing awkwardly against feathers or joints. Briefly, he glanced toward Feo, making sure he was still at least somewhat okay before his sapphire eyes turned out the window, watching the city pass by.

Feo blinked as Lucius’s hand closed around his arm, firm and unhesitating, pulling him toward the waiting taxi. The contact sent a jolt through him, something sharp and unexpected, but he didn’t resist. He couldn’t resist—not because of the strength of Lucius’s grip but because it completely threw him off balance. Feo allowed himself to be guided, almost stumbling into the back seat before the door shut behind them with a solid thud, cutting off the noise of the street.
-
His heart was beating faster now, and he hated himself for it. It wasn’t like Lucius had done it on purpose, right? It wasn’t like it meant anything. Still, the faint, lingering pressure on his arm felt like a brand. Feo shifted slightly in his seat, keeping his gaze down, his thoughts a tangled mess of embarrassment and confusion.
-
The taxi jerked forward, and Feo tried to focus on something—anything—other than the way his skin tingled where Lucius had grabbed him. He let his eyes drift to the worn fabric of the seat in front of him, tracing the uneven stitches and small tears with his gaze. The world outside the window blurred past, vibrant and chaotic, but it felt distant, like watching a movie on mute.
-
Why did Lucius have to do that? Feo clenched his hands in his lap, his fingers curling into fists. It wasn’t a big deal. It wasn’t a big deal. He repeated the thought like a mantra, but it didn’t stop the warmth creeping up his neck or the way his stomach twisted uncomfortably. He wasn’t used to being touched—at least, not casually like that. It brought back memories of his wing around him, and Feo wanted to bury himself in a deep, dark pit all over again. He could have gotten in the taxi on his own. Lucius didn't have to grab him.
-
Lucius, on the other hand, seemed completely unaffected. He leaned back against the seat, looking almost… relaxed. Feo chanced a quick glance at him, catching the faintest flicker of a smile before Lucius’s focus shifted to the cityscape beyond the window. The contrast was almost unfair. Lucius looked so at ease, as if the chaos outside didn’t faze him in the slightest, while Feo felt like a tightly wound spring about to snap.
-
The silence in the cab was heavy but not oppressive. Feo found himself grateful for it, even as his thoughts continued to spiral. His gaze dropped to his own knees, watching the way the fabric of his pants shifted with the motion of the taxi. He tried to push the moment aside, to bury it somewhere deep where it couldn’t bother him anymore, but the memory of Lucius’s hand on his arm refused to fade.
-
It wasn’t like it mattered, he told himself again. But the unsteady rhythm of his heartbeat suggested otherwise.
