Valid choice, I'd give it a solid 7/10

That's so valid tho, at my uni we have a t-rex skull out in our ACLC building, just sitting on the ground for people to look at and touch lmao. We also have a massive turtle skeleton in our museum which I find so cool

Yeah, I'm apart of the college of Ag so kids used to go up to it and rub it's nose for good luck before football games, can't let our team lose ;)

Yeah, it's really weird and kind of embarrassing so I have no idea why I told you XD

Yeah I went to sleep under a coffee table that same night.

It's definitely cool! Though, at heart I'm still more of a geology and paleontology person. Give me my rocks and fossils holy fuck - some of those come to uni with my LOL.

Also that's pretty cute! Moose as big as hell, god damn.

Haha, fair enough.

Oh, huh. I guess I have that piece of lore now, that's fair enough. I'm pretty sure someone was telling me they did the same thing recently, so you're not alone!

That's awesome, I mean technically mine are at my home too, gotta love college. It 100% is an art and a beautiful thing, honoring the animal that gave its life too. At my college we have a moose head that's fallen into disarray, well-loved though, it's considered to be a good luck charm.

Lmao, am I proud of it? No, do I need references and facts for things? Yeah, kinda XD

Yeah, this has bothered me since I was little so (No one outside of my family knows this XD) I still use kids toothpaste because it's sadly the only one I can stand. I wish they made other flavors, but mint is pretty much it unless you go hunting on amazon

Sounds good, have fun!

Haha, apparently it's not too uncommon! Some people are just more susceptible to accents than others. I don't get it whilst watching shows, but I do when travelling to other countries/speaking to my friends.

Haha, yeah, I guess it can be called squeamish. I like to be sensible about what I expose myself to online. I feel no desire to know how to accurately draw degraded human flesh - an artistic estimation works just fine for me!

Kryuk,

Watching "Hell's Kitchen" is always a nightmare. Especially because an American English accent is the only accent I can mimic without a trace of a Russian accent. So a British accent sounds like a donkey that was born in Siberia desperately trying to fit into Great Britan

Quartz's gaze lingered on Josephine for a moment longer than necessary, his sharp eyes narrowing slightly as if weighing her words against the backdrop of his own thoughts. Her offer was unexpected but not unwelcome, though it did little to erase the lingering questions buzzing in his mind. He leaned back slightly in his seat, the movement measured and deliberate, his arms still crossed loosely over his chest.

"I appreciate the offer," he said after a beat, his tone even and calm, but with an edge that hinted at his ever-present caution. "But I find that answers come clearer when one watches instead of asks." His pale eyes flickered toward Anastasia, his expression unreadable. "And I’ve been watching."

The subtle emphasis on the last word was deliberate, meant to imply that he had been noting the nuances of her behavior since they arrived, the way she interacted with Ana, and the layers of purpose she seemed to carry behind her composed demeanor. Quartz was no stranger to people who cloaked their true intentions, and while Josephine’s actions didn’t scream danger, he wasn’t ready to dismiss the possibility. Trust, in his experience, was earned through time and consistency, not words.

But there was something else, too—a spark of curiosity, buried beneath his guarded exterior. Josephine didn’t behave like someone who was running recklessly, nor like someone with a clear-cut plan. She seemed... measured. Intentional. Yet, there were cracks in that armor, moments of vulnerability that Quartz couldn't ignore.

He shifted his focus briefly to Anastasia, who had settled into a more relaxed posture, seemingly unconcerned with Quartz’s scrutiny. That, too, was a puzzle. Ana was rarely this unguarded, this willing to let someone into their tightly wound circle. It made Josephine all the more intriguing—and all the more worth watching.

After a long pause, Quartz spoke again, his tone softer but no less serious. "I’m sure Anastasia has his reasons for bringing you into this fold, and I won’t question that. But understand this—" His eyes locked with Josephine’s, the intensity returning, though it was tempered now by something more akin to curiosity than suspicion. "I don’t take chances with the people I care about. If you’re here, it’s because he trusts you. I’m trusting that judgment... for now."

He let the words hang in the air for a moment before shifting his gaze out the window, scanning the quiet street beyond. His posture eased slightly, though his focus remained sharp. "Enjoy your meal," he added, almost as an afterthought, his tone neutral but not dismissive.

Quartz’s way of speaking was rarely direct; it was layered with meaning and built to gauge reactions as much as to convey his own thoughts. Whether Josephine would respond to his veiled warning—or see it for the tentative olive branch it might also be—remained to be seen.

Anastasia shifted slightly in his seat, his sharp features softened by the pale glow of the morning sun streaming through the window. Though his usual aloofness remained, the quiet atmosphere of the diner seemed to relax him in a way Quartz rarely saw. His gaze flicked between Josephine and Quartz, a flicker of amusement in his eyes at their subtle interplay. He rested his elbows lightly on the table, interlacing his fingers as he leaned forward.

Before the silence could stretch too long, the sound of soft footsteps on the wooden floor announced the approach of a barmaid. She carried a small wooden tray under one arm, her movements quick but fluid. Dressed in a simple linen blouse and a dark woolen skirt, her hair was tied back in a loose braid. Her hazel eyes scanned the trio with polite curiosity.

“Good morning,” she greeted with a warm smile, her tone friendly and practical. “What can I get for you? We’ve fresh bread with honey or cheese, porridge with dried fruits, and eggs cooked however you’d like. There’s cider, milk, or warm ale to drink—or we’ve just brewed some herbal tea, if you’d prefer something lighter.”

Quartz’s gaze lifted to meet hers, his tone calm and measured. “Porridge with dried fruits and a cup of cider,” he said, removing his gloves and setting them neatly beside him.

The barmaid nodded, jotting down his order on a small slate with a piece of chalk before turning to Anastasia. Her smile faltered slightly under his sharp, always assessing gaze, but she kept her tone bright. “And for you, sir?”

Ana’s eyes scanned the outside one more time before answering, his voice even and clipped. “Bread and cheese. A cup of tea.”

Anastasia couldn’t help himself from scanning the streets. Something felt.. wrong.

She jotted that down, then turned to Josephine with a more curious smile. There was something about her that clearly intrigued the barmaid—perhaps her poise or the quiet elegance with which she carried herself. “And for the lady?”

Anastasia’s attention shifted back to Josephine as she would respond, though his focus lingered on her, not the exchange. Once the orders were complete and the barmaid retreated, Anastasia leaned back slightly in his chair, the hint of a smirk playing on his lips again despite his unease.

“Looks like you’ve already caught Quartz’s attention,” he said lightly, though there was an unmistakable layer of meaning behind his words. “Don’t take it personally—he watches everyone like that. Even me, from time to time.” His smirk deepened. “But I’d wager you’ve given him more to think about than most.”

Quartz shot him a flat look but didn’t reply, his expression unreadable. Anastasia turned his gaze back to Josephine, leaning forward slightly, his voice dropping just enough that it would only carry to her.

“You seem unusually calm for someone who knows what—or who—might be looking for them,” he said, his tone curious but not accusatory. “That’s either a sign of confidence or stupidity. So, I’d like to say that I admire your confidence.”

Waiting for his response, Josephine sat calmly, her watchful gaze picking apart the features of Quartz's face. The way his pale eyes narrowed on her and the guarded but calm manner in which his arms were crossed over his chest. He trusted her no more than she truly trusted him and she didn't blame him. She was strange and secretive, and in his eyes likely seemed to cling to his friend for reasons that were not safe. Her intentions were pure, but he did not know that. Just as she did not know for sure that Quartz was someone she could fully trust.
-
She didn't know where his loyalties laid apart from Anastasia.
"I couldn't agree with you more," she hummed, lacing her slender fingers together as she leaned forward towards Quartz. Her movements were not challenging or threatening so much as they were firm and solid. "I know you've been watching me, just as I have been watching you. With any luck, both of our observations will pay off," she added as she sat back into her seat, her eyes once more filling with that cat-like curiosity. She may not have seen every single wary glance that Quartz gave her, but she knew very well the feeling of having eyes staring at her when she wasn't looking. It was like an itch creeping up her skin, begging to be scratched or tended to.
-
Josephine craved to know what Ana's friends- no, family were like, and something told her that Quartz would be the hardest to crack. Then again, she didn't know much of Vincent yet since she hadn't met him sober, but even then she had a feeling. Her feelings were rarely ever wrong.
-
Josie knew that if Quartz knew exactly who she was things would make much more sense, but Ana was the only one she knew she could trust with such information. If he chose to tell Quartz, she would not be upset, but the information would not come from her mouth alone.
-
Once the silence was broken again, Josephine straightened up, listening to Quartz attentively despite the way her silver eyes swept over the room once more before returning to his face just in time to lock with his in a never ending battle of intensity. She did not fold or break not once as he spoke, her expression remaining calm and void of most emotion. The only flash of emotion to show was a gentler look in her hardened eyes when he spoke of not taking chances with those he cared about. Knowing that was enough for her. It was enough for her to withstand the cautious, somewhat calloused behavior, as well as the curiosity that danced about.
-
Josephine let the silence hang after that, accepting his words with the smallest of smiles as she drug her gaze over Ana. He was a man worth protecting. Her eyes flicked back to Quartz and her head dipped politely as she resumed that air of poised grace. "To you as well," she offered, her tone neither rude nor guarded, but lying somewhere within the grounds of fond neutrality.
-
The silence fell comfortably in her opinion for that small amount of time, her gaze flickering around more curiously now that the way it had been in a stealthy, guarded manner. She was still looking for anyone out of place, but it would take a keen eye to realize such a thing. Most likely the eye of someone who knew her tendencies like the back of their hand.
-
As the barmaid approached, Josephine offered a kind look accompanied by a soft greeting of, "Good morning." Hearing their options, she knew what she wanted as she waited patiently for her turn to order. She noted the way the woman's smile faltered at the sight of Ana, causing her to glance towards him, only to see that usual assertive expression. Had she not had the same one when they met, she might have buckled beneath its weight, but instead it only counted as another way that she and Anastasia were alike.
-
Turning her attention to the barmaid once more, Josephine smiled politely before answering, her eyes seeming to rove over the woman quietly as they did most people. "Bread and honey with milk, please," she requested, opting for something simple yet filling. She watched the scrawling of the chalk and the woman's departure before turning her attention back towards Ana. Something was off.. Bothering him despite the smirk that seemed to crave freedom.
-
At his words Josephine laughed softly, propping her chin into her hand as her elbow rested against the table. "I don't blame him for watching, and I'm quite sure you're right. I were him I'd be cautious and curious of me as well," she mused, a small grin playing across her lips.
-
Her attention zeroed in on Anastasia once more as he leaned towards her, seeming to beckon her closer with the softness of his voice. "Mm.. Just because I do not appear to be watching does not mean that I am not watching. I have been well before we left the forest, and so far I'm yet to see anyone I should be too wary of," she told him, her own voice lowered as she lifted her chin from her hand, her hands returning to her lap. "Regardless, I appreciate your view of me."
-
Josephine let the silence linger for a moment, her eyes shifting to watch out the window for a few passing seconds. "However..." She began as she returned her attention to Ana. "I get the feeling that something is not right. Is something weighing on you?" She questioned hesitantly, her voice barely registering above a whisper.

Anastasia's smirk faltered for the briefest of moments as Josephine's question reached his ears. His sharp eyes, already scanning the street beyond the window, fixed on a figure just outside—a man leaning casually against a lamppost, arms crossed, his posture relaxed yet deliberate. The man appeared unremarkable to an untrained eye: average build, neutral expression, and a plain gray cloak that blended seamlessly with the muted tones of the street. But Anastasia recognized the subtle cues: the stiffness in his stance, the precise placement to maximize his line of sight into the diner, and the faint sheen of a concealed blade beneath the cloak.
-
Lucius.
-
Anastasia's stomach tightened, his mind racing as his instincts kicked in. Ana’s gaze darted to Quartz, who remained unaware for the moment, his attention fixed on Josephine with that same calculating intensity. He didn’t have time to explain.
-
"Don’t move," Anastasia hissed under his breath, his tone low but commanding.
--
In one fluid motion, he reached across the table, gripping Josephine’s wrist firmly but not harshly. Before she could react, he shifted their positions, pulling her toward him and swiftly guiding her beneath the table. His movements were quick but precise, his sharp features betraying no panic despite the urgency.
-
“Stay down. Don’t make a sound,” he murmured, his voice barely audible.
-
From her new vantage point, Josephine would be able see the strong line of his jaw tighten, his hand lingering protectively near the hilt of the dagger concealed at his side. Whenever he cleaned his pants, he would always stock them with, at the very least, small knives, so that they were on the pants when he put them on. Above her, Anastasia shifted in his seat, his posture still outwardly composed as his piercing gaze locked on Quartz, who was looking down at him with a slightly puzzled expression.
-
"We have company," Anastasia said, his tone clipped.
-
Quartz’s brows furrowed, and his pale eyes flicked toward the window. It took him only a moment to spot Lucius. His sharp intake of breath betrayed his recognition of the man, though his expression remained carefully neutral.
-
Lucius didn’t move, but his gaze flicked once toward the diner’s door before returning to its original position. A signal. Anastasia didn’t know if the danger was immediate or distant, but he wouldn’t take chances—not with Josephine here.
-
“Quartz,” Anastasia said evenly, his voice carrying a weight of unspoken understanding. “Handle the barmaid. I need a moment.”
-
Quartz nodded once, his movements deliberate as he rose from his seat and approached the counter, intercepting the barmaid with an easy smile and a question about their cider selection. His tone was casual, but his sharp eyes kept flicking back toward the street.
-
“That man outside is Lucius, one of mine. Or, should I say, father's. If he’s here, we need to go. Vincent is friends with the owners of most diners in Razaviv, so I could bet that they know me. We just need to find a way out. There are usually back doors or sneaky exits in most places around here. Quartz will find one. For now, we wait, and hope Lucius doesn't come inside before we can get out. My best guess is that he's waiting for reinforcements, so we might have a small while, with luck.” He paused for a moment. "Sorry for grabbing you."

Josephine had hoped she was just picking up on the wrong tells, but judging by the way his smile began to fall she hadn't. Something was wrong. She tried to follow his gaze, though she didn't linger anywhere too long since more than one pair of eyes scanning the streets might tip off whoever was out there looking in. She wasn't nearly as trained on looking for those who didn't belong, especially when it came down to the men outside of Ravaryn.
-
Josephine stilled at his command, her eyes glued to Anastasia. A sharp breath was sucked in the moment she was grabbed, her light weight tugging towards him as her eyes widened with momentary shock. Still, she crouched beneath the table, steadying herself as she stared up at him, waiting for some sort of explanation.
-
At his next instruction, only her soft breath could be heard as it was finally released from her lungs. She peered up at him from beneath the table, her heart pounding heavily inside of her chest, her blood rushing in her ears from the adrenaline that had began coursing through her. She wanted nothing more than to bolt form beneath that table, but she couldn't do that. She had to trust Ana or she could end up fucking them both. Getting caught this early in was not something she had planned for.
-
Company. If that company was right outside, they knew they were in there, but the only question was, what kind of danger were they in? She wasn't much of a fighter, and she hadn't even kept a weapon on her. Her bow was still kept with her horse and it wouldn't do her much good unless she could put distance between herself and those pursuing them. She wouldn't be leaving Ana until she had to, though.
-
Josephine listened to the men's exchange, still remaining as as quiet as she could beneath the table. Once Quartz had left, she shuffled closer towards Anastasia, unsure of whether or not it was safe for her to make any noise. Listening to his explanation, she brushed against his leg, tilting her head to get a better view of him and to further gauge their situation. "It's alright.. I know you're protecting me.." she murmured, her voice hardly loud enough to carry to him. Typically she'd have had a cow for someone touching her without permission, but Anastasia was so different, whether she wanted for him to be or not. She knew that if he was going to grab her without prior consent it would be for good reason. He'd proved that already.
-
Josephine took a quiet, deep breath before breathing back out through her nose. Her heart had still been beating nearly out of her chest, but it was starting to return to normal. "What can I do to help?" She asked after a moment of silence, her voice still that barely whisper tone. She didn't betray any fear, however. She was merely being as cautious as she could be. If she was the reason he got caught or hurt, she'd never be able to forgive herself.

[ My apologies for the wait - I went back on duty and have been quite busy. ]
~
Quartz returned after a few moments, his movements steady and deliberate as he approached the table. His expression was calm, but the subtle tightness around his eyes betrayed the urgency of the situation. He leaned slightly, his voice low but audible enough for Anastasia to hear.

"There's a door in the back," Quartz said. "Next to the bathrooms. Leads into an alley. Should be clear for now."

Anastasia gave a single nod, his sharp eyes flicking briefly to the window where Lucius still lingered, seemingly patient but undoubtedly calculating. Without wasting another moment, Anastasia shifted beneath the table, extending a hand to Josephine.

"Come on," he murmured, his tone as quiet and steady as he could manage. His grip was firm yet careful as he guided her out from under the table. Every movement was deliberate, his focus razor-sharp as he scanned the room.

The few patrons scattered across the diner had started to notice the peculiar trio. Anastasia caught a curious glance from a man nursing a cup of coffee and a subtle frown from a woman at the counter. None of them moved to intervene, but their attention was enough to set Anastasia’s nerves on edge. He shot his normal, collected expression to every pair of eyes staring at him, which was enough for each one to turn away.

"Stay close," he said under his breath, his voice almost inaudible as he led Josephine toward the bathrooms. Quartz followed behind them, his usual swagger subdued, his pale eyes darting back toward the window to ensure Lucius hadn’t moved.

When they reached the bathrooms, Anastasia didn’t hesitate. Instead of opening one of the restroom doors, he pressed forward toward a smaller, nondescript door to the side. It creaked softly as he pushed it open, revealing a dimly lit hallway that stretched ahead.

The air was cooler here, carrying a faint metallic tang, and the muffled sounds of the diner faded as the door shut behind them. Anastasia’s grip on Josephine’s arm loosened slightly as they reached the end of the hallway, where another door opened to the outside. Bright sunlight spilled into the narrow passage as he pushed it open, revealing a quiet, empty alley.

He stepped out cautiously, Quartz at his heels. They paused there for a moment, the sunlight casting sharp shadows on their faces. Anastasia’s gaze swept the alley, his hand instinctively resting near the hilt of his dagger. He turned to Josephine, his expression serious.

"Do you have a horse?" he asked, his voice quiet but urgent."If so, get to it quickly and quietly. Stay in the shadows of the buildings. Head northeast toward Jaelnor—it’s a smaller town, deep in the woods. You’ll be safer there. If you don't have a horse, set off from here, and go straight into the trees. Keep going northeast."

He glanced over his shoulder, his sharp eyes scanning the street beyond the alley. "I’ll tail you to make sure you get as far as I'll go safely, but after that, I need to stay back and hide Quartz. You need to keep moving and don’t look back, no matter what."

Quartz frowned slightly but didn’t argue, his usual lighthearted demeanor replaced by an unspoken tension.

Anastasia turned back to Josephine, his gaze steady. He had no time to consider going with her. If Lucius was here, then it was much safer for her to be on her own, especially due to the fact that she appeared almost as a commoner. His guard wouldn't recognize her. But Lucius would certainly recognize Ana, and that was not a risk he could take at this time.

"Go," he said softly but firmly. "Now."

(That's quite alright. I'll be here whenever you have the time ^_^)
-
Josephine didn't waste a beat in taking his hand again, slipping out from beneath the table in a swift and deliberate movement. Her hand firmly yet gently gripped his, something in her subconscious afraid that if she let go she'd lose him despite the place being too crowded for him to get anywhere far without her catching up.
-
The stares from the other customers had been a bit of a bother, her worries being that they'd attract attention to the trio's much needed stealthy escape. She had avoided prolonged eye contact, which wasn't hard considering the way they seemed to want to avoid Ana's own gaze. It probably didn't look too good for two men to be making off with a young woman, but considering their place and the fact she wasn't resisting, most likely didn't want to stick their noses in places they didn't belong.
-
As he instructed her to stay close, she nodded, the only sound being that of her slightly quickened breath as she followed close, her head low and eyes sharp. If something did happen and someone tried stopping them, she knew she'd need to move quickly and get out of the way. Thankfully, no such thing happened before the time that they reached their destination.
-
Stepping into the hall, she traversed it as quickly as was needed, her nose having crinkled a moment at the metallic smell, the originating source thankfully a mystery. She was just as thankful when they poured out into an empty alley, her heartbeat managing to slow into a normal rhythm as her own grip on Anastasia loosened until it was no more.
-
"Yes, just a few buildings up from here," she answered, keeping her voice low but clear. At his instruction she nodded, putting the mental note into the back of her head. Northeast. Jaelnor. Josephine knew she'd be going alone as much as she didn't want to be. She didn't want to leave Ana or Quartz even in the face of the danger that was Lucius, but at the same time she knew there was a chance she'd be more of a burden than a help to them should the guard catch wind of where they were.
-
As he told her to go, that he'd trail her, Josephine hesitated for the first time when it came to his urgent instructions. The hesitancy to leave showed just enough for Ana to see as she looked at him, her words caught in her throat for a brief moment. "Please.. Be careful," she urged, glancing between the two men before her gaze returned solely to Ana. She rose a hand, cupping his face for a brief moment as she brushed her thumb across his cheekbone. "Until we meet again.." she whispered, drawing her hand away before turning away to leave.
-
Josephine did as he said, sticking to the shadows with practiced ease. Her footsteps were nearly silent, her pace a smooth and fast gait. It had been nearly impossible not to look back for Ana, especially knowing that he'd be following her until he couldn't anymore.
-
It only took a couple of minutes for Josephine to reach the stables and retrieve her mount and only a moment more for her to reappear on the street sitting atop the sleek, magnificent animal. She angled the horse towards the northeast, and only then did she look back in hope for a fleeting glimpse of Anastasia. After that, the animal broke out into a steady run, the wind whipping through Josephine's fiery red curls before stealing the ribbon from her hair, carrying it away into the breeze as she headed for Jaelnor.

Anastasia watched Josephine leave, his heart tightening at the hesitation he saw in her eyes. For a moment, he stood still, allowing himself the briefest of seconds to soak in the touch of her hand on his cheek and the soft whisper of her words. It was fleeting, but it lingered, giving him a rare moment of vulnerability that he quickly buried beneath his usual stoicism.
-
"Until we meet again..." she had whispered, and with that, she turned and disappeared into the shadows.
-
He stood there, watching her retreating figure, until the sound of her footsteps faded into the distance. The air around him was still, save for the distant hum of the street beyond the alley. His gaze hardened, and his mind snapped back to focus as he turned to Quartz.
-
"Go back. I'll meet you there," Anastasia instructed sharply. Quartz nodded, his lips pressing into a thin line as he slid deeper into the shadows of the alley, his pale figure blending with the darkness.
-
Anastasia, however, didn’t hesitate. He moved quickly, ensuring his silhouette remained obscured as he followed just far enough behind Josephine to remain unseen, his sharp eyes scanning the surroundings for any hint of trouble. He had to make sure she was safe until she reached her horse and was well on her way.
-
A few minutes passed, and the sound of hooves on cobblestone reached his ears. He slowed, taking cover behind a stack of crates just as Josephine appeared, riding her horse with effortless grace. He couldn’t help but admire the speed with which she had made the transition, her fiery red curls bouncing in the wind, but there was no time for admiration. He had to stay vigilant.
-
As she took off toward the northeast, he paused just long enough to ensure she was heading in the right direction. He didn’t move to follow her immediately—he had to make sure she wasn’t being followed before he did.
-
The tension was palpable in the air, but Anastasia knew better than to be hasty. He would wait, watching from the shadows until she had gained enough distance, then he would make his move.
-
As the horse’s figure disappeared into the distance, the ribbon caught by the wind and carried away, Anastasia allowed himself the briefest moment to exhale. It was only then that he turned on his heel and retreated, ready to take the next steps in keeping the other two hidden and ensuring they wouldn’t be pursued.
-
The game was far from over, but for now, Josephine was safe.
-
The cold air bit at Anastasia's face as he sprinted through the woods, not bothering to mask his steps. The crunch of snow beneath his boots echoed in the quiet, but he was past the point of care. Every step brought him closer to the hideout, closer to what he had to do. His breath came in quick bursts, each exhale visible in the frigid air. He was relentless, pushing himself harder, faster, as if the very speed of his movements could outrun the danger lurking behind him.
-
The trees around him blurred as he charged forward, the snow thick underfoot, his boots leaving a trail that would be easy to follow. But Anastasia didn’t care. The moment he reached the hideout, he wouldn’t need to hide. It was time to act, time to move.
-
The roots to the tunnel immediately snapped as he slammed his boots into them, the weight of his body crashing to the bottom with a sharp thud. A grunt of pain escaped his lips as he hit the ground hard, but he quickly pushed himself back up, ignoring the aching throb that coursed through his ribs. He had no time to dwell on the pain.
--
Quartz and Vincent were already there, startled by his sudden arrival. They exchanged looks, their expressions ranging from confusion to concern as they watched him rise.
-
"What the hell, Ana?" Quartz asked, his usual calmness faltering in the face of the urgency radiating from Anastasia.
-
"We need to pack up," Anastasia snapped, wiping snow off his coat. His eyes were hard, focused. "Quickly. If you want to come with me, we leave now. I'm going after Josephine."
-
Vincent’s brow furrowed. "What happened? Is she—"
-
"She's fine," Anastasia interrupted, his voice clipped. "But the danger’s not over. Lucius will be coming, and I need to make sure she gets to Jaelnor safely." His gaze flicked to Quartz. "Either you pack up and come, or you stay behind. Your choice."
-
Quartz, despite the tension in the air, didn't hesitate. He nodded once, already moving toward the corner where his gear was stored. Vincent lingered for a moment, eyes narrowing, but then he, too, began to grab his things.
-
Anastasia wasted no time. He rushed into his carving room, the familiar scent of wood and dust filling his nose. His eyes flicked over the pieces scattered across the room, his creations, each one a piece of him—carved with skill and love. But there was no room for sentiment now. No time for hesitation.
-
His fingers brushed over the wooden bag he had sewn for situations like this, quickly grabbing it and filling it with blades. He didn’t stop to count or think; the motion was practiced, automatic. He took only what was necessary.
-
His eyes lingered on one piece near the far corner, a small carving of a man holding up a child, their faces filled with joy, their laughter frozen in time. It was a memory, a moment he never let go of, and for a fleeting moment, he almost felt the weight of loss—of everything he had built, everything he had sacrificed.
-
But there was no time for that. Not now.
-
With a final glance, Anastasia grabbed the small wooden sculpture and tucked it into his bag, careful not to damage it. He had to leave everything else behind.
-
He turned quickly, his movements sharp, and rushed back to the entrance where Quartz and Vincent were finishing their preparations.
-
"We leave now," Anastasia ordered, his tone hard, but there was a brief flicker of something—something softer—in his eyes when he met Vincent’s gaze.
-
Vincent nodded solemnly. "We'll follow you."
-
Anastasia didn’t wait another second. He turned and led the way back through the tunnel, toward the outside world, and toward Josephine. The weight of his decision pressed heavily on his chest, but it didn’t matter. He would see this through, no matter what.

Leaving him there was quite possibly the hardest thing that Josephine had ever done. She hadn't felt even half as much hesitation when she left her parents and home, but when it came to a man she'd known for less than twenty-four hours... It felt like a sin to walk away and not look back.
-
It had taken every ounce of strength for Josephine not to stop in the middle of the road and look for Ana, but despite not being able to see him watching her ride away to safety, she knew he was there. The mere thought of his presence and the urgency in his instructions had been enough for her to keep going without a thought of defying his orders. So, with nothing but a journey to Jaelnor before her, Josephine lost herself in the sound of hooves on cobblestone.
-
As stone turned to a worn dirt path and open skies became shrouded by creeping tree branches, Josephine slowed her travel to more of a walk. Her mind began to wander, her hands resting idly on the horn of the saddle. The events of the past twenty-four hours had barely had time to register within the princess' mind. Leaving home had been simple enough, but she had never been prepared to meet someone who'd mean so much to her on a whim like that. Fate had played a very cruel game with her, and she couldn't turn back now.
-
For all she knew, she'd just lost everything she had ever wanted. The universe had given her a taste of blissfulness, only to snatch it away and leave her with the uncertainty of the future. Getting to Jaelnor would be plenty easy, but what after that? Josephine couldn't stay in Jaelnor since it was too close to Ravaryn, but she didn't want to go too far either in the occasion that Anastasia would come looking for her. If he'd come looking for her... No, he would. There wasn't a single variation of life in the world that she believed he wouldn't come looking for her in. If anything had become painfully aware to Josephine, it was that Ana was the one person she could be herself with, and whatever odd bond they shared was too strong to keep the other away for long.
-
The trip was seeming uneventful with Josephine keeping an eye out for anyone else coming or going down the road. Despite the calmness, she couldn't get over the feeling that she was being watched by someone looming in the shadows. She didn't look around, but she listened to everything, singling out the sounds that didn't belong to that of nature around her.
-
There was the faint sound of hooves stepping through the brush, and had it not been for the oddly rhythmic sound of twigs snapping she would have never known she was being followed. Her jaw clenched faintly, her fingers reaching for the grip of her bow. Then, out the corner of her eye, she saw a man emerging from the tree line on horseback.
-
He was riding faster than Josephine could react and she fumbled the bow, dropping it between the two horses as she evaded the man. She didn't recognize him, leading her to believe he wasn't apart of Geralt's search detail, but everything was happening so fast.
-
The man grabbed her, attempting to pull her from the saddle, but she had managed to grasp one of her arrows. Josephine slammed it into the man's thigh, ignoring the pain from the way he'd fisted her hair. Her hair was released, giving her just enough time to steer her horse away from the man before he was grasping at her again. She veered off into the woods, attempting to continue towards Jaelnor as she weaved through the trees.
-
She couldn't hear the man following her anymore, but she couldn't hear much over her heartbeat and the limbs scratching at her arms and head. She was pulling back on the reins, but the spooked horse wasn't stopping. Josephine soon found herself barreling towards a low hanging limb, causing her to dive off rather than risk a broken bone.
-
The fall from the horse harsher than she'd expected, leaving her wheezing for a moment. Josephine pushed herself from the ground, groaning softly as she took in the breath that had been knocked from her lungs. She wasn't sure where the road to Jaelnor was anymore and her horse was no where to be seen. Her head was spinning and her face was scratched to hell and back, but she hadn't forgotten about the man who was possibly still pursing her. With no time to waste, Josephine started off again, stumbling through the woods in the direction she believed to be Jaelnor.

Anastasia's pace was relentless, his feet barely touching the ground before he surged forward again, branches clawing at his coat as if trying to slow him down. Quartz and Vincent followed closely, their breathing sharp and strained, but they didn’t dare fall behind. They all knew the stakes. Anastasia’s focus was singular, his sharp eyes scanning the woods as they raced along the treeline parallel to the road.
-
Despite the biting cold, sweat clung to his brow, and every fiber of his being screamed at him to move faster. He moved swiftly, cutting through trees, making his way through paths that a horse couldn't. He'd sprinted to Jaelnor, and Razaviv, and Yamiire, and other towns countless times—evading Lucius, chasing Vince or Q, simply running through the woods—and he knew exactly every variable. Every way he could go to make this shorter, to make himself faster, to get back to Josephine, and to get away from Lucius. The area was eerily quiet except for the crunch of snow beneath their boots and the occasional cry of a distant bird. Anastasia barely registered the growing ache in his legs; his mind was consumed with one thing: Josephine.
-
The rhythmic pounding of his pulse in his ears dulled the outside world until something in the middle of the road snapped him out of it. He skidded to a halt, nearly losing his footing in the snow, his breath visible in the air as he stood frozen.
-
A bow.
-
It lay there, abandoned, half-buried in the snow and dirt, its polished wood dulled by the harsh environment. Anastasia stared at it, his heart plummeting into his stomach as terror gripped him.
-
"No," he breathed, his voice barely audible. He dropped to his knees, hands hovering above the weapon as if touching it would confirm the worst.
-
Quartz and Vincent stumbled to a stop behind him, their chests heaving as they tried to catch their breath. Quartz, seeing the bow, furrowed his brow. "What's up, Kova? It's just a—"
-
"Josephine's," Anastasia interrupted, his voice low and tight. He picked it up carefully, the weight of it unfamiliar in his hands but the sight of it crushing him. His sharp eyes flicked up and down the road, then to the trees on the other side. "Something happened."
-
Vincent stepped forward, glancing around. "There's no blood—"
-
"But there’s no horse either," Anastasia snapped, his tone sharper than he intended. He stood abruptly, shoving the bow into Quartz's hands. "She was attacked. That much is clear."
-
Quartz frowned but said nothing, his face grim. Vincent scanned the area, squinting into the trees. "If they took her, where’s the evidence? Tracks, signs of a scuffle—"
-
"She wasn’t taken," Anastasia said, already moving toward the woods opposite the road. His movements were quick and purposeful, his instincts guiding him. "She got away. Or tried to. She’d fight, but if the bow's here…" He trailed off, his jaw tightening.
-
Quartz followed him. "You’re saying she ran into the forest?"
-
"I’m saying she didn’t have a choice," Anastasia growled, his voice hard. He paused just at the tree line, scanning the shadows with an intensity that sent a chill down even Quartz’s spine. His voice dropped into a dangerous whisper. "Someone’s following her."
-
Vincent frowned. "And what’s the plan? We can’t go rushing in without knowing what we’re up against."
-
Anastasia turned his head slightly, his expression unreadable but his eyes blazing with determination. "The plan," he said coldly, "is to find her before whoever’s after her does."
-
Without waiting for a response, Anastasia surged into the forest, his boots crunching against the snow as he weaved through the trees. His sharp eyes scanned the ground, looking for broken branches, disturbed snow—anything to give him a clue as to where she had gone. Or, not gone. Really, there was no way to know if that was her bow. It could have been dropped by someone random. But something told Anastasia that it was, and the twisting feeling in his gut only got worse at the thought.
-
Quartz and Vincent exchanged a glance before following him, their pace hurried but careful.
-
The air was tense, the silence oppressive, as the three men moved deeper into the forest. Anastasia's mind raced with possibilities, each one worse than the last. He gritted his teeth, forcing himself to focus on the task at hand. Lucius wasn't dumb enough to come this far north in such thick foilage without good scouts. So he'd get to Josephine or Jaelor, whichever came first, and if he found out anyone hurt her, the knives in the bag over his shoulder could be put to a use other than woodcarving.

Josephine had never had so much fear instilled into her body. She had read plenty of books where the young adventurer gets attack and is forced to stray from their course, but she hadn't been prepared for it to happen to her.
-
Now, the princess was unarmed, tromping through the woods without a clue as to where she was going. The worst part? She was being followed, and she had no idea how close her pursuer was to catching up to her. The horse she'd been on had went into a dead run much faster than she'd ever expected the older mare to go, but she was sure the tracks that were left would have been quite obvious. As was the spot of disturbed snow where Josephine had fell and the footprints she had left trailing into the grassier area to avoid leaving more prints.
-
The man pursuing her wasn't far behind, though he was wounded thanks to Josephine's initial attack. No longer able to bear the searing pain of the arrow lodged into his thigh, the man gripped it and yanked the make-shift weapon out, tossing it onto the ground from where he sat atop his own horse. The discarded arrow soiled the pure white snow with small splatters of crimson; a bone chilling sight for anyone who could possibly understand.
-
This man was indeed a stranger to Josephine as well as the Crown, but she was no stranger to him. Within an hour of the princess's escape, news had spread along the grapevine. Between Geralt's detail searching for able bodies and gossiping townsfolk, nearly all of Ravaryn knew that the darling face of their kingdom had gone missing. This had attracted plenty of attention, good and bad.
-
Damien Cowel was a well known corrupt sellsword who always had his best interests at heart. His current interest was in capturing Josephine and holding her captive until the bounty for her safe return was increased, but it would be safe to say that none of his intentions would be pure. He was not a gentle man and at the current moment, he was positively livid with the unruly woman.
-
Weaving between trees, Josephine strove to avoid leaving tracks, but thanks to the thick snow covering nearly everything, there was always a small sign that something other than an animal had been in her place. If it wasn't footprints in the snow, it was broken branches and disturbed leaves that would give her away. Sadly, her attempts would not be successful. She didn't get very far before she was caught up to.
-
The sound of beating hooves filled her ears, and when she looked over her shoulder Josephine caught sight of Damien coming in hot. "Come along little princess, stop running!" He snarled, urging his horse faster as Josephine started to run, no longer caring what tracks she left. He laughed dryly at the feeble attempt, stumbling off of his horse once he was close enough. The man was somewhat limping thanks to the wound in his thigh, but it didn't stop him from catching up to Josie.
-
The extremely tight grasp on her arm startled Josephine, making her scream out, the sound echoing through the forest and disturbing birds. "Get off of me!" She seethed, turning to attempt to jerk herself out of his grasp. Damien was much stronger, only tightening his grip and pulling her closer into his body to prevent her escape while he drug her back to his horse. All the while, Josephine was thrashing and screaming at him, her nails scratching at bare skin. Damien had began to grow increasingly irritated with the princess, and what she did next had been the final straw.
-
Remembering the previously inflicted wound, Josephine dug her fingers into the open gash, tearing at the sensitive flesh. This caused Damien to let go of her, harshly pushing her backwards onto the ground. "Fucking wench!" He growled out, pressing his palm over the freely flowing stab wound. Josephine started to scramble up off the ground to run again, but the moment she was on her feet, he had grabbed her again. In a matter of seconds, Damien had Josephine pressed up against a tree, his bloodied palm wrapped around her neck to keep her pinned there.
