Arrested Staff

Ordered from who worked there longest/had the most seniority/whatever the damn ranking system is because I’m too tired to really figure that out but I know it exists in some way.

Léan Ceallach, 63, Alive. Female. Started working at 25 and arrested/stopped working at 50. Sentenced to 20 years, still has 7 years left.

Léan was the one actually in charge of the orphanage after the previous one retired. So, uh. I’m sure you can imagine how bad she is. She made the rules, she let her staff abuse kids, she abused kids, she ran the place. She was also the one that kicked our boy out.

(Léan means ‘Torch, Corposant, Moon’ and Ceallach means ‘Bright-Headed, War, Strife, Church’)

Emyr Watkins, 61, Alive. Male. Started working at 24 and arrested/stopped working at 48. Sentenced to 20 years, still had 7 years left.

Emyr was incredibly strict. Whether that be with schedules, rules, or just about anything else. Even the way he carried out his abuse- Which he was very adamant about calling punishments or reprimanding. Either way, his actions weren’t as volatile as some of the other staff. Though, given how exact he was with his rules and schedules, it all could’ve easily just been him looking for any and every excuse he could find.

Moyra Byrne, 61, Alive. Female. Started working at 25 and arrested/stopped working at 48. Sentenced to 19 years, still has 6 years left.

Moyra was probably the closest staff member to Léan. They got along great. Absolute terrible besties. She made sure the staff followed the rules. She helped put some of the rules in place. She was incredibly sadistic and incredibly manipulative. Anyone who knew what she was actually like behind closed doors, was afraid of her. Very few people tended to know though, and even less knew the full extent.

Rhianon Stephens, 60, Alive. Female.,Started working at 26 and arrested/stopped working at 47. Sentenced to 19 years, still has 6 years left.

Rhianon was another staff member that got away with a lot more than what one might think. She wasn’t someone to cross, even some of the staff tried not to. She took a very specific type of pleasure in what she did.

Awstin Griffith, 58, Alive. Male. Started working at 25 and arrested/stopped working at 45. Sentenced to 25 years, still has 12 years left.

Okay, so, not going to lie- Awstin was one of the worst. More will be gone over in The Overview but... Every child at the orphanage feared him. Even some of the staff feared him. He was incredibly sadistic, to the point that it wasn’t even something that he tried to hide.

Aneurin Powell, 55, Alive. Male. Started working at 23 and arrested/stopped working at 42. Sentenced to 25 years, still has 12 years left.

Aneurin actually knew Awstin before either of them started working at the orphanage and it was because of Awstin that Aneurin decided to apply. Which, if you haven’t already guessed, he’s just as bad as his friend is. He was much better at hiding how terrible he was, but they were both just about on the same level.

(Aneurin means ‘Honour, Esteem, Dignity’ and Powell means ‘Eminent, Prominent, Well-Seen’)

Rhys Pritchard, 57, Alive. Male. Started working at 27 and arrested/stopped working at 44. Sentenced to 17 years, still has 4 years left.

While Rhys didn’t take as much pleasure in directly abusing the kids there as some others did, he was the one helping to handle letting non-staff come to abuse the kids. So while it was rare for him to do anything himself, at least most of the time, he made sure that the kids wouldn’t ‘get off lightly’, basically.

Elva Murray, 53, Alive. Female. Started working at 25 and arrested/stopped working at 40. Sentenced to 13 years and being released in a few months.

Elva sucked. She showed up at the orphanage and basically immediately became someone you did not want to see if you were a kid there. Especially since you couldn’t complain around her since she preached ‘being grateful’ to an insane degree.

Caerwyn Parry, 52, Alive. Male. Started working at 26 and arrested/stopped working at 39. Sentenced to 15 years, still has 2 years left.

Compared to most of the others, Caerwyn wasn’t as strict or harsh. If he wasn’t being watched by other staff members, he probably wouldn’t have been as bad as he was. Still though, he tended to exaggerate his abuse if he was being watched, a sort of compensation for not being as strict.

Ronit Shea, 44, Alive. Female. Started working at 23 and arrested/stopped working at 31. Sentenced to 3 years, released at 34. Currently working as a social worker.

Surprise! There’s a singular kind of good person here. She’s definitely better than the others. She’s also the one that eventually reported the abuse and got them all arrested. As such, her sentence was mostly due to not reporting the abuse sooner.

The Overview

When the staff, and others that I won’t be going over, got arrested, it was because Ronit, who had been working there for eight years by then, reported all of them. Some were less thrilled about being arrested quietly, which is when Ronit ended up getting the scar shown in the neka above. Anyways. The arrest and resulting trial would eventually end up making headlines. So, let’s get into everything.

To start off, let’s go over a simple fact. The abuse was not the same for each child. Every child ended up experiencing abuse at some point there, but there were also some variables involved that affected the type and extent of the abuse. Such as the behavior of the children. Which isn’t to say that the abuse wouldn’t have happened if the behavior of the child had been different, but the staff members used rules (often excessive or hard to follow) in order to justify the abuse should they have the need to. These rules, as mentioned, were not rules that most children would have an easy time following. And even the few children that did somehow manage to follow them still faced abuse to a certain extent. These rules were also rules that neurodivergent children were likely to have an even harder time following. Another important thing to mention is that while the staff had an agreed upon list of rules, each one also had their own rule list as well. And each one had different responses to each rule, whether an agreed upon one or a personal one, being broken. Some were less, for lack of a better word, forgiving than others. Some were less predictable or precise with what would happen than others. Each of them had a certain type or combination of abuse that they used more than others.

Now then, with that settled, let’s go over what all was happening here. Which... Was a lot. Oh boy. The lore.

Starting off with the best one because I think that might be a good idea- We have Ronit Shea. As mentioned, she only worked there for eight years before reporting the abuse. Why did she wait eight years? Uhm. For a few reasons. For one, she was trying to gather evidence. For two, some of the staff members are kind of terrifying. For three, at the start of her career there, she wasn’t really even able to see the extent the abuse went to. Anyways though, she only really did anything to the kids when other staff members were around and she always tried to do as little as possible. She thought it was better than risk being fired and not being able to help in the long run.

There was a certain... Order that the staff followed when it came to ‘punishment’. As in, usually it was just whoever was closest or had seen the rules being broken that was expected to correct it. Unless the child in question was one that broke the rules more often than others, at which point it was expected for the child to be brought to either Léan, Awstin, Aneurin, Moyra, or Rhys, depending on just how often the child broke the rules. Usually, the child was brought to Awstin or Aneurin rather than the other three. But that was more so because those two always seemed to be nearby. As in, yeah, they kept track of which children were more likely to get in trouble.

Which, speaking of Awstin and Aneurin... As previously mentioned, the youngest children that anyone on the staff admitted to sexually abusing were three years old. Which staff members said that? You guessed it, Awstin and Aneurin. Did they lie when they said it? Yes. Three was not the youngest. There were younger victims. Three was just the youngest they admitted to. Were they the only ones on the staff doing that? No. Definitely not. But they were the only ones on the staff that admitted to having victims that were that young. Were they the only ones on the staff with victims that young and/or younger? Also no. Again, just the only ones to admit it.

Anyways. What else was going on in the orphanage? A lot.

For starters, I mean, obviously the verbal and emotional abuse. Definitely the most common and definitely what every kid there faced. Even the ones that somehow managed to follow each and every rule. The rules in and of themselves were pretty damn abusive too anyways. But either way, each child there had probably heard at one point that no one was ever going to want them. Or that only ‘well behaved’ children get families. Or that the ‘punishments’ (abuse) was to help or fix them. Or just flat out insults. Or plenty of other things along those lines.

It also wasn’t uncommon for food to be withheld, for example. Whether that be a singular meal being withheld or not being fed for days or even longer than that. Frankly, it was actually probably one of the most common things happening there. It was an easy thing for the staff to do. On the other end though, there were also the staff members that forced children to eat things that they either knew the child was allergic to, wasn’t capable of eating, couldn’t stand eating, or just things that children really shouldn’t be eating.

There was also just the overall neglect. The majority of the staff didn’t care about the children there, and unless they were abusing one of the kids, they didn’t pay much attention to them at all. They did the bare minimum that they had to in order to keep people from finding out what they were doing. And even that wasn’t paid too much attention. By the time they were arrested and the orphanage was shut down, there were plenty of stains that the staff had neglected even trying to clean. Stains of plenty of different kinds on walls, sheets, floors, clothes, and probably other places I’m forgetting too.

Another thing that wasn’t too uncommon was the staff tying down children. Whether that means tying them down on and/or to a bed, chair, pipe, or just about anything else. The amount of time varied, it could be for mere minutes, it could be hours, it could be for days. Every so often, it could even be for weeks. Whether the child was told how long it would be or not varied too. No matter how much time was left though, if any of the staff was doing something with the child, especially Awstin or Aneurin, then it’d at least have to wait until after the staff member was done. Even if that meant the child was tied down for longer than they’d been told they would be. The only staff member that didn’t follow that was Emyr, who would be untying the child exactly when he said he would be whether or not anything else was happening.

The orphanage staff also had the ‘punishment’ of locking children up into small and/or dark places. Like closets, cabinets, and other such spaces. Again, how long the child was left in there varied. Sometimes it was minutes, sometimes it was hours, sometimes it was days, and in a few cases, it could even be weeks. And depending on where they were locked up exactly, it could have even been a month.

There was also, of course, the outright physical abuse going on. Which, there were so many different kinds of that going on that I’m honestly not even sure how to go over all of it. The physical abuse could be very mild or very severe or somewhere in between and it all varied on a ton of different factors. It was bad.

Along with all I’ve mentioned so far, the orphanage also worked as a sort of trafficking. Kind of. Mostly in the sense that they allowed people to come to the orphanage to do nothing but abuse the children there. Usually sexually, though it wasn’t the only thing the people that came did. Rhys, Rhianon, and Moyra were the two that mostly ran it.

I think it’s important to mention that the children weren’t particularly close either. They didn’t look out for one another as much as you’d think they would. The whole ‘snitches get stitches’ thing kind of skipped out on the majority of them. Really, if a staff member wasn’t there to see a rule be broken, a child usually ended up telling them anyway. The staff was less likely to hurt a child that told them about a different child. It even caused some lying among the children, where one of them would tell the staff that a different kid did something they didn’t and any amount of the kid in question trying to tell them that they didn’t do it was met with more abuse. Because obviously that child must be the one lying and all.

Anyways, uh. This probably isn’t everything. I mean, Léan also burnt the birth certificates of different children and threw them out of the orphanage. But this is everything I can think of to put here right now. So... Yeah.

Letif, simply giving up: "There's something that's beautiful, being awake for my funeral. You can close the casket now!"

Letif, referring to what he was expected to be and how he failed at being "pure" and "perfect": "The plans for my father's hopeless seed, born into moral poverty! Still, I wasn't an angel heaven sent to break through my cliché boundaries."

Letif, mostly just accepting that he's going to die before he even really got the chance to live and be who he really is, referring to himself by the pronouns assigned to him, bitter: "'Cause Friday is black for me, the dreamer has dreamed her dream. When Friday is black, there's no turning back! 'Cause Friday is black for me..."

Letif, questioning if he could have done anything to prevent his early death: "Is there some lesson to learn, should I never have wanted? I never even got started! Or were the decks always just this stacked?"

Letif, shifting his mindet to try to rationalize death and make up excuses to why dying is a good thing: "I mean, it's really a godsend, clear my plans for the weekend! But there's nothing to subtract!"

Letif, almost angry now, referring to how his former friends and family looked at him before leaving: "I don't want your half-baked sympathy, when did it save those in need?! Still, I thought that angels did exist, but now I hope they plan to end it quick!"

Letif, half-angry, getting more and more exhausted: "'Cause Friday is black for me. Only my ashes will see the sea. When Friday is black, there's no turning back! 'Cause Friday is black for me!"

Letif, finally beginning to cry, recalling his brother-sister relationship with Lilith, the one person he expected to stand by him even after H left: "At first I didn't know what she was to me, at first I didn't know why I cared, or why I wanted to hold her and rock her to sleep... Did I need her more than she needed me?"

Letif, slightly more angry, too tired to do much anymore: "Maybe I'm wrong. She can go on her own, 'cause I'm leaving!"

Letif, repeating for the last time, starting to drift off: "'Cause Friday is black for me, only my ashes will see the sea... When Friday is black... there's no turning back, 'cause Friday is black-"

Evin, seemingly appearing out of nowhere, rushing to Letif's side and immediately analyzing his wounds: "You're not dead yet!"
