In Garvin's defense, a lot of his problems are because of his childhood and just how absolute shit most of it was.

The rest is probably a combination of genetic predispositions, not having a strong/healthy/good support system, and him not being in therapy anymore.

Macy has most certainly climbed in rank with Garvin! Macy gets one free pass in telling Garvin to do... Pretty much anything without question because Garvin has to repay the debt of free food somehow and he refuses to do so using money. Because, well, that completely defeats the purpose of the food being free. (Ignore how the whole debt thing does too, Garvin doesn't count it.)
