Injuries make it so that when battling or huntin in explore the wolf won't hit and it will say "____ whimpers because of their injury."
There are several injuries and they can be healed by health potions:
Broken tail-Yellow Healing Potion
Infected Wound-Red Healing Potion
Injured paw-Green Healing potion
Someone tell me if I missed anything

as far as i know the wolf will hit, but the damage they do will be greatly reduced. injuries can also be healed by robin feathers, found while exploring in the forest.
