Salt & Soil

For generations, the herd has occupied the same sweeping lowlands—familiar grazing paths, reliable water, and well-worn trails etched deep into the earth by countless hooves. This land is more than territory; it's memories.

Until the day the smell arrived.

It came first on the wind: sharp, foreign, wrong. Then the sounds. Then the shapes along the southern coast. Trees fell, the ground was cut and cleared, and strange structures rose where none had ever stood before.

Humans had arrived. And they did not leave.

At first, their presence was nothing more than a mere nuisance, barely more than a disturbance along a well-traveled path as they remained near the shoreline. It should have been obvious it would not last. The island is not endless. And so, their presence spread, creeping up from the shoreline like vines, taking over more little by little until horses began to vanish, some driven off, others taken, and some never seen again.

The herd grew restless, eventually starting to divide over how to respond. One faction, led by a cautious, but forward-thinking leader, argues that the land is no longer safe. The humans will not leave, and the only way to survive is to abandon their ancestral range and move deeper inland, into harsher but untouched terrain.

The other faction refuses. This land had sustained them for generations, to leave is to surrender, to fracture the herd, and risk starvation, injury, and even death in unknown territory. They believe adapting is better than fleeing: learn the humans’ patterns, avoid their structures, and hold ground. As a result, tensions rise, disputes grow physical, and, inevitably, a challenge erupts officially splitting the herd into two: The Lowland Herd and the Inland Herd.

The two herds must forge their paths forward through the unknown. While nothing is for certain about their futures, one things can be guaranteed: change always comes.

The Roleplay Rules
Follow All of Eve's and WP's Rules

1. Do what you can to be active. Do not join just to disappear on us. I also expect that if you take a high ranked role, that you will be on the far more active side, as they will be pivotol roles within the story.

2. Make sure you read everything for this Rp. There are guidelines to be followed when making your characters, and things you'll need to keep in mind. It'll quite clear to me if you've only half read things.

3. For my sanity's sake, you may use stock imagery from Deviantart Only, otherwise descriptions, personal artwork, or horses from HEE are allowed. You must follow not only WP's rules for Stock Images, but the TOS of the artist as well. Keep in mind, even with an image of any sort, a description is still required.

4. This is a roleplay with Semi-Literacy and Semi-Realism expectations. I do expect this to be shown not only in the roleplay itself, but in your character forms as well. At minimum a paragraph of 5-7 proper sentences with decent grammar, spelling, and punctuation is required for descriptive areas of the form. Unless Pre-Approved by me, I will not be accepting Dot-Point Lists.

5. No Perfect Characters, Godmodding, etc. It won't be tolerated in this Rp.

6. No Orphaned Foals or Yearlings, they must have a biological mother. When you reserve one, you must already have found a biological mother.

7. This is an Rp with a heavy survival theme to it. Expect and be okay with your characters to become injured, and perhaps even die. This is not the place where your horse is going to avoid every bad thing that could happen to them.

8. Drama in Rp is Totally Fine and Encouraged, but Drama outside of it is not.

9. Since the two main herds of this rolepaly split from one, it is expected and required to come up with affiliations with others in the Rp for your characters. The Lead Stallions of the two will especially have emphasis on this.

10. Maximum of 4 Characters per Person for now. I may make exceptions, but you must be able to actively Roleplay every character you make, or they'll likely get eaten by the Rp as plot points.

11. Have fun!

The Island

From a distance, the island appears almost serene, green against blue, softened by sea-spray haze. Up close, it is a place of sharp contrasts, shaped by wind, tide, and time. The air is rarely still. Wind moves constantly across the land, threading through grass, slipping between stone, and carrying with it the mingled scents of salt, earth, and life.

Every part of the island offers something different. Every part demands something in return.

The Lowlands

The lowlands stretch wide beneath an open, unbroken sky, a vast sweep of grass that rolls in slow, endless waves beneath the wind. This is the most generous land on the island: rich, steady, and long relied upon.

The grasses grow thick and deep-rooted, soft in some places, coarse in others, whispering as they bend. Trails cut cleanly through the plains, pressed firm by generations of hooves that have followed the same paths so often they have become instinct. Even the youngest can learn them quickly, guided as much by memory as by sight.

There is little shelter here. The land offers no cover, no place to hide—but it does not need to. Safety comes from distance, from the ability to see across the open stretch of land and know what approaches long before it arrives.

Water, once easy to reach, is no longer what it was.

A single creek winds through part of the lowlands, its flow steady and clear, its banks once worn smooth by constant use. Now, much of it lies within land altered by humans. The ground there is cut, interrupted, and marked by their presence. What was once open has been closed. What was once safe has become something watched, something avoided.

The rest of the lowlands remain relatively unchanged for now.

It is this openness, this reliability, that made the plains the heart of the island for generations.

And what makes losing them unthinkable.

The Central Valley

Where the land dips inward, the island gathers its lifeblood.

At the center of the valley, surrounded by luscious grass and butting up to the woodlands inland, lies a broad freshwater lake, its surface often still, reflecting sky and movement in equal measure. It is the most reliable source of water on the island, and, in many seasons, the only one that can be depended upon without question. Trails from every direction bend toward it, converging as though drawn by instinct.

The ground surrounding the lake bears the weight of that need. Hoofprints overlap and press deep into the earth, forming paths that twist and cross and double back on themselves. The air is heavier here, thick with the scent of water, damp soil, and the constant presence of life.

But the lake is not completely safe.

Though it lies inland, it is not beyond the reach of the sea. Crocodiles slip into the lake from beyond, they risk the dangerous trek across land to reach the lake, drawn by the steady presence of prey. While they are vulnerable during their travels to and from the lake, and depend entirely on their luck hunting terrestrial prey, their presence is still felt. It's these same things, and the limited space of the lake, that keeps the population within it in check, never allowing an over-abundance of the reptiles to exist at one time.

Still, those who drink here learn quickly: never linger, never step too far, and never assume the water is empty.

However, because of this, It is also one of the few places the humans avoid.

The horses and other animals, though, cannot.

The Inland Territory

Beyond the valley, the land rises and breaks, shifting from open ground into uneven hills and scattered woodland. The grasses thin here, giving way to patches of brush, clusters of trees, and stretches of exposed earth and stone.

The terrain is inconsistent. Some ground holds firm beneath each step, while other places shift unexpectedly with loose rock, shallow dips, and narrow passages that force careful movement. The paths are less defined here, less certain, shaped more by necessity than habit

Sound behaves differently here. It carries in strange ways, bending between hills and through trees, sometimes arriving from the wrong direction, sometimes not at all. It is easy to lose sight of others, to drift apart without realizing it until distance has already settled in.

Water exists, but it must be found as small creeks, narrow streams, places that do not announce themselves easily. Nothing here is freely given.

It is a harder land., but it is quieter, too, in ways the lowlands are not.

The Northern Range

The land sharpens as it climbs toward the northern edge, rising into a jagged spine of stone and wind. The ridge is narrow, uneven, and unforgiving, its paths little more than worn traces along rock and slope.

Grass grows in stubborn patches between stone, dry and sparse, offering little sustenance. The ground is unreliable, shifting beneath weight in ways that leave little room for error. A misplaced step is not easily corrected here.

The wind is stronger, more constant, stripping scent from the air and carrying sound away before it can settle. There is little warning in this place, and little forgiveness.

Few remain here by choice.

Those who do learn quickly, or they do not remain long at all.

The (Southern) Coast

At the edges of the island, the land gives way to the sea.

The coastline is in constant motion, shaped by waves that break endlessly against sand and stone. The ground shifts beneath that pressure, firm in some places, slick or unstable in others. Salt lingers in the air, in the soil, in everything the wind touches.

This is where the humans have come, specifically the Southern part.

The land here no longer follows the island’s natural rhythm. Sections are cleared, flattened, altered. Where grass once grew uninterrupted, there are now breaks, sharp, unnatural, and deliberate. Paths that once led cleanly through the land now end without warning, blocked or diverted by things that do not belong.

Even when they are not seen, they are present, but for now it is mostly just the Southern Coast that has taken the brunt of the human occupation.

The Tidal Isle

To the South of the Coast, there are times when the sea pulls back just far enough to reveal what is usually hidden.

The Tidal Isle rises from the water only during these times, connected to the mainland by a narrow stretch of shallow water, wet sand and stone. The crossing is uneven, slick, and fleeting; there for a time, and then gone again beneath rising water.

The island itself is low and exposed, its grasses short but rich, its soil laced with minerals not easily found elsewhere. There is no shelter here, no elevation to retreat to, only open ground and the quiet awareness that the sea will always return.

Those who cross must choose carefully, the tide does not wait.

The Windward Isles

Farther out and to the North of the Island, where the sea grows rougher and the wind never truly settles, the Windward Isles stand against the elements.

They are smaller, harsher, shaped by constant exposure. Rock dominates much of their surface, broken only by low-growing vegetation that clings stubbornly to the ground. What grows here is tough, resilient, and rich enough to be worth the risk.

Reaching them is no simple crossing though. The waters between are deeper, colder, and less predictable. Currents shift without warning, pulling and dragging in ways that cannot always be fought, not to mention they're often hunted by things beneath the surface.

There is a point in the crossing where turning back is no longer easier than continuing forward. Those who make it must commit. And those who hesitate often pay the price.

The Other Occupants

Alongside the horses, and now humans, of the island, comes the other resident animals. These are a mixture of both predators and prey, from mammals, to reptiles, to birds. Below they are included with what region they can be found in.

Lowland Animals
- Deer & Small Antelope (Non-threat)
- Wild Boar (Aggressive & Territorial, Will Attack)
- Feral Dogs (Hunt in Packs, Especially dangerous to Foals and Weak)
- Island Wolves (Typically Alone if Here, Threat to Foals)
- Large Raptors (Mostly Dangerous to Newboard Foals)

Central Valley Animals
- Deer (Non-Threat, Pass Through Frequently)
- Large Rodents and Rabbits
- Raccoons, Foxes (Mostly Scavengers)
- Island Wolves (More Confident Ambush Hunters)
- Feral Dogs (Less Common due to Wolf Presence)
- Saltwater Crocodiles (Ambush from the Lake)

Inland Animals
- Small Herbivores
- Deer (Less Frequently Though)
- Island Wolves (Main Stronghold, Major Threat)
- Medium to Smaller Birds (Nesting Area for Them)

Northern Range Animals
- Mountain Goats (They Mind their Own, Pretty Amicable)
- Small Mammals
- Foxes (They Den Here, Mostly Non-threat except to Young Foals)
- Solitary/Lone Wolves
- Large Birds/Raptors (Nest on Cliffs)

For the coast and the surrounding ocean, and isles, there are various crabs found on land, as well as fish in water. The main threat here are Saltwater Crocodiles and Sharks, though this is really only when a horse is caught out in water that is deep enough for them to hunt in.

Minimal refinement
No extreme draft heaviness or fine sport-horse builds

Disallowed builds:
Extremely tall or lanky horses

Heavy draft types

______________________________________________________________

Bay
Brown
Black
Chestnut
Dun (red dun, bay dun, grullo)

Uncommon colors:
Flaxen chestnut
Heavier sooty shading
Rabicano (minimal)
Slight pangaré (mealy markings)

Rare colors:

Notes:

1. For the purpose of this Rp, the Lead Stallion of the Inland Herd was originally the Lieutenant of the Lowland herd. Which means, for now, neither herd has a lieutenant, but can find one in Rp.

2. Also, for the purpose of the Rp, there are no lone mares, as I believe it makes the most sense for them to always be with other horses.

3. I've also decided to not include family units at the start of this rp, at least until other roles are finished since it's far more important to fill the Herd roles first.

If you can read this, this is now open! <3

Side Notes for the Rp:

1. The Rp will be starting shortly before foaling season for the island, so all of the foals made for the rp are currently unborn, and will be born after the beginning of the rp.

2. The Season at the start of the Rp will be Late Spring, leading into Early Summer, which is when Foaling Season starts for the herd.

He doesn't have a specific mate, as he fathers most, if not all, of the foals within his herd, and many of the foals and yearlings in the Inland Herd due that herd only recently breaking off from his.
