Familiars are a Premium Feature. You find them while Exploring, and if your wolves have enough Social they basically become your "Battle Partner"
Then when you go to your Den Page, you have the option to feed them mushrooms. If you feed them, a little drop den menu appears on the Explore Page. Similar to when you have pups available to take Exploring.

When you have a Familiar with you while you battle in Explore, they're the last ones to attack and you don't control what move they make. They just attack every time until they die.

They most likely had a Premium before, but reverted back to a Basic account.

UGH why does it have to be premium!!!!

Because premium features give people incentive to spend money on the game, to keep it running.
