They're peices of art you 'adopt'. I guess you just keep them and admire them, just like any other art you would buy :)

Adoptables are often pieces of art (usually animals of some kind) created and sold by members as a way of earning currency.

The 'designs' are often created into OC's (Original characters) that can sometimes have intricate backgrounds and personalities, and can be used as characters in Art and Roleplays. You buy/pay for the character/design, and it is yours to do whatever you want with (as long as you follow the Artist's rules).
