Also, I feel it is my civil DUTY to spread the misery that is 1e characters. First off, you have to roll for stats, and depending on how forgiving your DM is you might roll four and drop one, or roll three and drop none. Literally everything is based on what you roll. Races don't give you stat boosts, they have stat limits. Stuff like, female elves can't ever get a Strength over 16. Next, classes. Oh BOY the classes. If you have a Strength under 5, you can only be a wizard. You can only be a Paladin if you've got a Charisma of 17 or more. 18 is the MAXIMUM stat in any field for your characters. Your race will ALSO limit your class. For example, Halflings can literally only be Druids, Fighters, and Theives. EXCEPT, Halfling Druids are capped at level SIX, and Fighters are capped at either 4th, 5th, or sixth level depending on subrace and stats. And proficency? WHAT'S THAT?!? You don't have proficency in a type of weapon, your have to choose ONE SPECIFIC weapon for that proficency. FIghters have the highest initial weapon proficency count at four weapons. Shields are SO DIFFERENT. Size mattered back then, apparently, because if you had a small shield, you could only apply it's bonus against one attack per round, medium gave you two strikes, and large three. You touch 1e and you suffer. I learned 1e, and I still have the habits from it. On my first 5e campaign, one of the guys I was playing with made a dwarven monk, except his best stat was like 16 and it was in Constitution. So my brain went 'That's not allowed! He needs at LEAST a 15 in Strength, Wisdom, and Dexterity to class as a monk, and also HAS TO BE HUMAN' except it's 5e where you can in fact be a gnomish paladin and smite people in the name of the Short God. Then, after you've got your stats, race, and class all done, you need to pick an alingment, which is limited by your race and class. And if you DON'T act in accordance with that alignment, your character gets declassed to the most-applicable base. Example, a paladin doesn't act lawful and/or good in any situation (Unless they're being like, mind-controlled or something) then they get turned to a Fighter instead and loose all the paladin abilities. An assassin that does a nice thing with no ulterior motives? Bam, now you're a thief.

I would like to tell y'all about the time my group fought a bunch a goblins. You see, we were all first-level, just staring out, and we get ambushed on the road by som goblins. Standard first encounter. We kill most of them, but one escapes. That escapee went on to warn his camp that we were coming, set the whole place on alert, and ambush us RIGHT after we finished off teh boss hobgoblin. He ended up killing our wizard and running away. Our campaign continued and he kept popping up as an antagonist right up until the end, when we beat the big bad warlock trying to bring Cthullhu into the material plane. By that point, he had leveled up a bunch as well along the journey and had even gathered his own goblin army. We turn to face him, still weak from the last battle, and it is a glorious fight. Our rouge lands a fatal backstab, and as the light is leaving his beady little eyes, he grins. And uses the last of his strength to break the magic crystal separating the mortal world from that of the Great Old Ones! We all died, the world was destroyed, it was so much fun!

Hello! I was a DM for a bit (we haven’t met for a while, since COVID and stuff, but I’m technically still the DM), so I have more experience with the worldbuilding side of things than with characters, but I guess I’m here now too, if that's okay? If anyone needs ideas, help, critique, or has questions on worldbuilding, feel free to PM me whenever! :D Edited at September 29, 2021 07:38 PM by Evergreen

Oh, ouch! I'm in a club too, there's like 10 of us, but we're all split up into different campaigns so that wait times aren't too much. The DM told us that she wanted to do a campaign based on the Boxcar Children books (At least in setting) when we first met up. It was actually kind of funny, she said that, and my first response was 'So we're all runaways who go back home within the first two weeks and then go on to solve various mysteries? How's that gonna work?' And she went 'Wait, what?' Turns out she only read the first book, and not the 150-ish ones that came out after it. That series really took a sharp left turn after the first one, lemme tell ya.

Oh wow, yeah. That series definitely did make a sharp turn, I had every book at some point(and then got rid of them all because I couldn't keep reading about these kids that are somehow better than the police) Canis Inanis said: Oh, ouch!
