Laika dips her head in thanks, before Ferox asked how it was going with her pack. Laika lifts her shoulders in a shrug,"I'm not really sure. I wasn't challenged at all by my pack on the way to the Gathering, during it, or on the way home. In fact, some overheard Rider's comment and were mad." Laika sighs,"And Khan reassured me that the pack was loyal to me, but... I'm not sure. They sure don't act like they are very loyal to me. Or that they like me... But, Khan also said they were trying to push my buttons. See how far they could get before I really started cracking down." Laika looks down at her paws, then back up at Ferox,"What about you? Is it any better with your pack?"

Ferox nodded sympathetically. "Khan's your Beta, right?" he asked. "I think that's a good sign. If he thought to say it, then it must be true at some level." Ferox paused. "Well, it's that or he's trying to manipulate you," he added. "But I don't think that's the case. There are better ways to do it." Ferox thought for a moment, looking down at his paws, then back up at Laika. "The only advice I can offer in this scenario is to keep pushing through," he said. "It doesn't sound very wise, but I'm no Elder." Ferox shrugged at Laika's question. "Things haven't changed much since we last talked," he said. "They were a little better today after the Gathering, but I think it's just because they wanted to get the patrols done quickly so they could talk about the Gathering."

Laika confirms,"Nova and Khan are my Beta's." Then listens as Ferox speaks, before sighing. "Khan is a very loyal wolf.. He loves his pack very much, and will always do what is best for the pack." Laika respected that as well, it was one reason Khan became Beta. Laika dips her head,"I plan to, my Elders chose me to be their Alpha, and I don't plan on letting them down. Besides, the others will come around sooner or later." Laika then grows quiet again as Ferox talks about his pack. "Perhaps so, or maybe they saw you being an Alpha up there, and started respecting you." Laika sighs,"Every wolf respects something different, but in the end, most every wolf is loyal to their pack. And perhaps loyalty to the pack will have to be enough."

Ferox's smile broadened and he nodded. "You won't let them down," he said. "And I have every confidence that you'll win your pack over." He shook his head slightly, his expression growing rueful. "I hope so, but if you saw my nervousness, then my packmates definitely did," he said, shaking his head. Then his smile faded completely as he heard Laika's last statement. Loyalty was probably the biggest issue he faced besides his lack of experience. "Not all wolves are loyal to their packs," he said, a surprising amount of bitterness entering his voice. Ferox looked up at the sky, then back at Laika. "We should get back to our camps, it's getting late," he said, standing up and shaking sand from his pelt.

Laika dips her,"I hope so." Laika then reassures,"You won't either. Every Alpha struggles to find their way." Laika then chuckles,"I'm sure your packmates wouldn't have done much better up there." As Ferox spoke of not all wolves being loyal, all happiness faded from the female. Bitterness and regret shone in her expression and voice as she thought of her father,"Oh, I know." Laika startles as she glances at the sky, the sun was starting to shine. Laika gets to her paws,"I'll see you in two nights then." Laika dips her head in farewell, before bounding off towards her camp. The first patrol would soon be out

Ferox dipped his head and said a hasty, "Goodbye," then turned and ran all the way back to his pack, hoping that he'd be able to catch some sleep with whatever was left of the night, but he knew he wouldn't have the time. Outside of camp, he stopped to roll in a patch of sweet-smelling herbs to hide Laika's scent, then hurried into camp. Nobody was up yet, but it wouldn't be long before his Beta pair awoke. Sure enough, after only a minute or two, Slate emerged from his den, looking alert and ready for the days work. Ferox dipped his head in greeting, and Slate responded with a a shallow bow, no words exchanged between them. Most of the pack was up just after the sun rose, and Ferox began organizing the day's patrols.

Ferox had been right; his wolves had seen his anxiety at the Gathering. They challenged his authority constantly as he tried to organize patrols, casting rebellious glances at him, questioning his orders, and even downright disobeying him. Try as he might, Ferox could not control them. After nearly an hour of struggling, the patrols were finally off, and mentors began the instructing of their trainees. Once he was alone, Ferox wearily sank to the ground and closed his eyes, taking deep breaths to try and calm down. Almost immediately, he felt someone gently lick the top of his head and looked up sharply. Then he lowered his gaze respectfully. "Hello, Elder," he mumbled, greeting Oak.

Oak stood silently for a moment, then nudged Ferox, encouraging him to get to his paws. Ferox grudgingly did so, and Oak led Ferox out of camp and into a secluded part of the woods. "Ferox, is everything alright?" he asked. Ferox stared at him. "No, everything's not alright," he snapped. Then he took a step back and lowered his head. "I'm sorry, Elder," he apologized. Oak sighed and sat down, and Ferox followed his lead. "I know it's hard," he said, his voice strangely soothing. "All new Alphas struggle. Even Obsidian had a hard time at first." Ferox shook his head as he looked up at the Elder. "They're not like me," he said, his voice catching. "Do you not remember what happened- what happened with Shale? The pack isn't going to forget—or forgive—what happened to him! I was doomed from the start! Why did you pick me, knowing that I would fail?!" Ferox' voice rose in volume and anger again, and once again, he backed down, apologizing to Oak. The Elder regarded Ferox for a moment, then shook his head. "We chose you because we did not think you'd give up easily," he said. "We knew what had happened, and we knew it would be difficult, but we believed that you would succeed." Ferox looked up again. "It doesn't matter what you believe," he spat. "The rest of the pack believes I'm a failure, and I'm beginning to believe it myself!"

Ferox turned and ran into the surrounding trees, running nearly to the edge of the territory bordering the unclaimed lands, where he stopped, panting heavily. He growled, and the earth began shifting beneath his paws. He gave a loud, furious howl, and jagged spikes of stone ripped through the grass, erupting from beneath the ground, sending dust and debris flying. Ferox' howl faded, and he looked around, his anger suddenly replaced by shame. This was the first time he had ever let his emotions get the better of him, and as he stared around at the spikes jutting from the ground, he sank to the ground, taking a deep breath. He focused, and the stones slowly sank back beneath the ground, the only sign that they had been there was the loosed patch of disturbed dirt. Ferox waited for a moment, his head bowed, then stood up. "This will never happen again," he vowed to himself, then turned and slowly made his way back to amp.

Laika bounds into her camp, having basically burned the smell of Ferox off of her. Her Beta's were already awake as was most of her pack, however they were eating and grooming themselves. A few wolves went as far as to dip their head respectively towards their Alpha, while a few others openly glared at her. However Laika ignores them, she was use to it by now. Laika slows down beside Khan and Nova as the more wolves emerged from their dens and the pack started to gather around for patrol sorting. Laika settles down and begins sorting with Khan and Nova adding things every so often. It was going well, with only occasionally glaring. Until she reached one of the younger groups of wolves, a little group led by a fierce rebellious wolf named Aragorn.

"Lilith, take Titan, Myth, and Aragorn. Check the border of the unclaimed lands, make sure the rouges aren't coming around. And it wouldn't hurt to check for predators either." The gray wolf dips her head as she steps forward, flicking her ear to summon the wolves named. Titan, the trainee of Lilith, and Myth, a newly made Delta, step forward without complaint. However, Aragorn does move from where he was sitting with his friends. Aragorn was very vocal about how he felt,"Why should we go patrol? Even if we check for rouges it's not like our borders will stop them. It clearly didn't stop them from killing Flint." At once a lot of wolves, mainly more of the older ones, turned on Aragorn snarling and growling. However Laika's voice cuts through the chaos,"Enough."

The wolves quiet down as Laika glares at Aragorn,"Have you no respect for the dead?" Aragorn sneers,"Why should I? Their dead, and dead wolves can't do anything." Ignatius snarls, eyes flaring,"But living wolves can." Aragorn's gaze flashes to the Alpha's brother,"You wouldn't dare." Ignatius bares his teeth,"Oh? You want to try me?" Laika was more then willing to allow her brother to teach Aragorn a lesson, but however she had to step in. "Ignatius." The wolf bares his teeth at Aragorn before reluctantly stepping away. Laika swings her gaze on Aragorn,"Alright. Fine, you don't want to patrol, you don't have to." Aragorn smirks,"Good."

Laika calmly continues,"Which means you get to take a camp job. Your punishment is you get to take care of the Elders. You'll care for them until you learn some respect and some humility." Aragorn bares his teeth but the Alpha continues over him,"And if I hear a single bad report on you, then the punishment will get worse." Aragorn snarls and Laika eyes turn fiery red in response. However the Alpha's pelt stays black, and she lifts her head challenging the young wolf to protest. Aragorn's own eyes glow red and it's a stand off, the two glaring at each other. However finally Aragorn ducks his head, his eyes fading back to normal,"Fine."

Laika points with her nose,"Your punishment starts now." The young wolf drags himself to his paws and slowly makes his way to the Elders den. Lilith calls out,"Alpha, do you want me to take someone else?" Laika dips her head,"Yes, take Helios." The former trainee of Laika leaps to his paws and soon the patrols were off. Laika makes sure everything was settled, and gathers her trainee making her way to the exit. Laika was going to take Eyre out for some training, stopping to duck in and check on Aragorn, before continuing onward.

(Sorry, this one kinda got long, XD)

That night, Ferox settled down in his den, but didn't fall asleep. After he had returned to camp, he had immediately sought out Oak and apologized for his disrespectful outburst. Being the kind wolf that he was, Oak brushed it aside and told Ferox to think about what he had told the young Alpha. Ferox, relieved that Oak wasn't upset with him, had promised that he would. Of course, the other Elders had given him a severe lecture, but he endured it patiently. As Ferox lay in his den, he thought back on how the day had gone. It had been horrible, and Ferox, to his great shame, had very nearly given up.

Ferox looked outside his den, which overlooked most of the camp, feeling a gently breeze blowing in and cooling his fur. "I'm not going to give up," he said to himself. "I refuse to fail." His eyes took on a determined light. He knew his wolves would try to undermine his authority. They were upset that he had even given the slightest hint of weakness to the wolves of the other packs, and they had every right to be, but Ferox would not allow himself to lose control of his pack. Ferox rolled over onto his side and closed his eyes. It had been an exhausting day, and he knew he needed sleep. It was still a long time in coming, but it finally took him just after midnight.

The next morning, Ferox was awake before most of his pack, although a few early risers had gotten up before him. He waited for everyone to get up, then got to work organizing patrols. As he had expected, there was nearly as much resistance as yesterday. "Ferrum, Quartz, Aurum, I want you to take your trainees hunting with you," he said. Quartz and Aurum, with much grumbling, did as he requested, but Ferrum didn't move. "Ferrum, over here!" Slate called from his own group of wolves. Ferrum stood up and went over, shooting a smirk at Ferox. Ferox's eyes darkened, and he followed Ferrum to the Beta. "Slate, I'd like a word with you," he said. "Now." At the last word, spoken sharply, Slate looked up, a little surprised, but he followed Ferox away from the group. "Slate, I've had enough of this from you," he said. Slate met Ferox' gaze and replied, "Had enough of what, Alpha? I'm just doing my job." Ferox could hear sarcasm in Slate's voice as he said the word 'Alpha,' and he gave a slight growl. "No, you're doing my job," he said. "And you've been slowly doing it more and more recently." Slate stared at him, waiting for Ferox to turn and walk away. Ferox made as if to do so, and saw the light of triumph in Slate's eyes, then without warning, turned and threw himself at the larger wolf.

Slate gave a surprised grunt as Ferox slammed into him, and, caught off-guard, found himself pinned. Although Ferox was young, he had the characteristic strength of the Terra Lupi wolves, which had enabled him to knock Slate down. He felt Slate resist, trying to get up, but Ferox bared his teeth and slammed him back down. "Do not think for one moment that I will tolerate this any further," he growled quietly, putting his face close to Slate's. "If this continues, you will be demoted and someone else will take your place as Beta." The words didn't have much of an effect on Slate, but it was Ferox' actions that got to him. He had not expected something so bold from the young wolf, and now, there was a hint of grudging respect in his gaze as he nodded. "Yes, Alpha," he said. Ferox gave a curt nod and stood up, allowing Slate to get to his paws as well. "Good," he said with a brief nod. Ferox turned and walked back to the main group, Slate trailing behind him. "Ferrum, you're going with Quartz and Aurum," he barked. Ferrum looked up, startled, and glanced back at Slate, who gave a slight nod. Ferrum stood up and walked away, and before long, the three of them and their trainees were all out hunting. Ferox had noticed Ferrum's glance at Slate. His wolves were still looking to Slate as their commander, but this was a start.

(Nothing wrong with a long response ^^)

Laika's day had been successful, Eyre was drawing closer to the final trainee test and was improving greatly. The food pile was stocked, their territory was safe. The wolves either had started to respect the young Alpha or had learned from Aragorn's little scene that morning that Laika was done playing around and being the nice wolf. And when Laika had returned she was passing Aragorn, the wolf's head usually high with pride and arrogance, low and sad as he trotted out with used up bed moss. Laika nods in satisfaction as she sends off her trainee to eat and rest. The wolves were laying in the clearing, eating and chatting amongst themselves.

Laika scans the clearing, making sure that each and every wolf had food. Outside the nursery, while the mothers were eating and chatting, the pups were wrestling and bowling each other over. Laika chuckles slightly as she remembers when she and her siblings use to do that. Speaking of which, she could spot them near the edge of the camp, eating. Laika trots to the prey pile, picking out a large shrew before joining her siblings. Who each turn a gaze on her,"Well, well. Look who joined us." The tone was playful and teasing and Laika sighs, shaking her head in amusement.

The wolves then grow serious,"I like how you handled Aragorn this morning." Laika takes a bite,"It was my job, besides the wolf needs some humility and respect." Ignatius scoffs as he sends a glare to where Aragorn was just returning from dumping the moss,"You could've let me teach him some." Laika laughs,"Perhaps, but I don't think that lesson would have lasted long. Perhaps our Elders will teach him respect." Ember agrees,"There is nothing more scary then an angry Elder." The siblings all laugh at that. Soon the moon started to rise and one by one the wolves slipped off into their dens.
*
The next morning, Laika was the first awake, well except for the two wolves on guard duty. The young Alpha leapt up to the ledge that overlooked the camp, and settled down on it grooming herself as she awaits her pack. One by one the wolves slowly emerged and soon it was time for patrol sorting. They were already gathered around and Khan and Nova were waiting. Laika leaps down and joins the wolves, sorting them again. There were still plenty of rebellious and angry glares but no one said anything.

Laika sends off all the trainee's to hunt for the day, choosing Cinder and Helios to supervise them. Though Laika had teased them, telling them not to get distracted. The two had made it official that they were mates. A rumble of laughter ripples through the pack as the six trainee's charge off headed for the camp entrance with Cinder and Helios trotting after. Laika continues to sort patrols and soon all the wolves were out, even Khan and Nova each leading a patrol of their own. Laika stayed behind to protect the camp, since there were so many wolves out.

(I always enjoy a good long reply^^, and I just love how our's go from real long to short, then back again, XD)

Once all the morning patrols had been sent out, Ferox volunteered himself to help care for the Elders. He spent the entire morning cleaning out their den with the assistance of Granite, Slate's trainee, who Slate had assigned to the task of taking care of the Elders the night before. As Ferox and Granite were hauling old moss out to the edge of camp, the hunting patrol returned with its catch. "Why don't you go get the Elders and tell them that the hunters have brought back some prey," he said to Granite. "I can finish this." Granite gladly complied, running back to the Elders den while Ferox took the old moss out of camp and buried it.

Ferox returned to find the Elders emerging from their den, and he dipped his head respectfully before backing away to let the pack eat. Once everyone had taken their food, Ferox selected a small rabbit from what was left and carried it to a large, flat-topped rock sticking up from the ground that was reserved for the Alpha and whoever else he invited to join him. So far, Ferox hadn't invited anyone but Slate and his mate, but they had both declined. Ferox sat and ate quietly, watching the others socialize. Rosemary's rowdy pups were playing around their mother's paws, and Ferox watched them closely. 'They'll need mentors before too much longer,' he thought.

Throughout the day, wolves came and went about their business, and in a moment of free time, Ferox padded over to Rosemary. She noticed him and dipped her head. "Hello, Alpha," she said. "What is it?" Ferox looked over at her pups, who were wrestling not to far off. "Your pups are nearly old enough to become trainees, correct?" he asked. Rosemary nodded. "They've been looking forward to it for weeks now," she said. "They've been bugging their father about it nonstop for the last two days." Ferox nodded and looked back at Rosemary. "I'll find find them mentors," he said. Rosemary looked a little apprehensive as she asked, "Will you be taking one?" Ferox gave an inward sigh. "No, I won't," he said slowly. Rosemary looked relieved, then quickly covered up the expression.

Ferox turned and walked away, returning to the flat-topped rock. He hated reminders of what happened to Shale. He felt horrible about it already, but the fact that Rosemary didn't want him to mentor a pup made it so much worse. He wanted his wolves to trust him, but their full trust was something he could never obtain. He gave a sigh and glanced up at the sun. It was getting closer to evening, the shadows beginning to lengthen as the sun began its descent. Ferox suddenly brightened up a little. Tonight he could talk to Laika! He knew he could be punished severely for meeting with a wolf from another pack, but he really enjoyed talking to her.

An hour or two before sunset, Ferox began organizing the evening patrols. "Slate, pick for wolves and go to the border along the unclaimed lands," he instructed. "Ferrum, take four more and patrol the Ignis Lupi border. Steel, Crystal, Clay, you're with me." The group Ferox had picked showed some resistance, with Steel sitting down where he was and saying, "Why can't you send someone else?" It wasn't that he was lazy, he just didn't feel like taking orders from a wolf only a third his age. Ferox glared at him. "Because you're available, now let's go!" he replied. Steel shook his head. Ferox hesitated for a moment. He still wasn't used to having the higher rank, and his instincts told him that Steel was the dominant one here. Then he bared his teeth. No way am I letting this arrogant windbag get the better of me, he thought. He padded up to Steel, who gave him a smirk. Without warning, Ferox lashed out with a paw, slamming it into Steel's ear. Steel yelped, reeling back, then stood up. "I said, Get. Up." Ferox growled. Steel obeyed, but gave Ferox a dangerous look. I'll have to watch that one, Ferox thought grimly. The patrols were quick, but thorough, and they soon returned to camp. Ferox sat down in the entrance of his den, waiting for his wolves to disperse to their dens so he could sneak out.

(Lol yeah ^^)
