I made myself turn away, I kept myself walking and turning around in the crowd, I wanted to go back and look again, but that rider didn't need me to poke around in his personal space.
Plus, the only reason I was drawn to him was because of the fact that he reminded me of her, I couldn't do that to him. I tucked my wings in close and let out a shallow huff, sliding and moving in between the spaces of spiky, growling reds, greens, blues and whites. I hoped to cross paths with none of them.
I sucked in a deep breath, holding myself bunched tight, my neck tucked so that my chin was touching my chest, my wings curled around me. I swallowed the emotion daring to appear, I needed to distract myself, dearly so.
I unwrapped myself and exhaled slowly, creeping forward and out from behind other dragons, making my way back to the front.
I am okay, I will be okay.
My thoughts kept repeating themselves, my own mind comforting me. Soon, I started to believe it. Even if she wasn't still alive, I was, and I could carry out revenge but I need a rider to do so. Or so I told myself.
Perhaps I was making excuses for myself, maybe I just wanted to connect again. Ever since my rider died, I have distanced myself from both human and dragon. I lost the friendships I once had, whether it was to death or to my ignorance.
Maybe... just maybe I could have a friend again, something to fight for other then revenge.
Instead of walking away, my feet took me towards the platform, except I wasn't openly going towards the platform, I was just going to look, from the side.
Sliding in between two reds, I curled my serpentine neck and watched a man with tanned skin and brown eyes, and darker curls. I watched as he stood and brushed his arm off.
I snorted, the human was close enough to hear me but I doubt he would look, instead I just watched him. That's all I need to do.
My deep blues eyes flicked from the red on my right to the human, suddenly a wave of protective energy washed over me, I lifted my head and snapped at the red.
Dare he look at my human. I turned my head towards the human again, but soon realised what my own mind whispered, 'my human?... no.., simply not- not yet..."
I shook my head, violet flames flowing freely from my nostrils, I am close enough that the heat of my flames would most definitely be making the human I was staring at warm.

Callisto Sylverune | Captain | Bonded Illinto | Mentions:

Nicodemus, Kikimora, Newcomers, Eidothea, Akuryo (Indir.) Ian, Illinto (Dir.)

Callisto had arrived with his dragon, they were rarely separate. In fact, the only reason he did not reside with her in her nest was because of the winding path skywards that he simply could not access. Even riding her, his head would be mush by the time they made it up there. He was situated on the opposite side of the platform from his friend, waiting for the meeting to begin in stoic silence. His untattered riding clothes in place, not a hair out of place. Neither he nor Illinto had been injured in the most recent mission, something that Callisto was not particularly proud of. But the past cannot be changed, only the future could be sculpted.

That was when he heard Illinto drift into his head, soft as ever. He will start soon, then you can get some air. His eyes drifted towards where she was peeking over the platform towards him. He had always admired her spectral appearance, wispy and fleeting. Her split scales a beauty to behold, in fact he was rather proud of his partner. Even if in the academy he had been taunted, others were hunting down the biggest, aggressive monsters. Ones that could eat Illinto in a heartbeat. But when he turned around and met the purple gaze lurking behind him, his heart was won. She had silently descended behind him and chose him before he had even laid eyes upon her.

Upon Nicodemus’s commencement, his head angled to look up to where their leader stood, addressing the gathered masses with practiced confidence. He admired the way the man could address a room and keep their attention with such ease, Callisto was certainly not suited to that type of role. Far too much talking and reassuring with white lies. He preferred quiet bluntness.

The losses had been significant and members of his own unit had been severely injured and would be out of commission for a long few weeks or even months. He could have sworn that one of his members had bled out on the rubble, but she was brought back to the caves and was currently resting in bed. Somehow, she had survived, found the will power to push herself to survive. The tug of shame and guilt yanked on his mind, if he hadn't slipped off to check ahead, if he had just stayed with them. Maybe he could have lured the arrows away with Illinto, she was too quick and too bendy to hit easily. Perhaps his team could have evaded.

These emotions needed to be pushed away, compartmentalised. There was no point in feeling pity, be it for himself or others. They all knew why they were here and what they were risking by going out there on these missions. If someone decided they did not want to go anymore, they were free to stay, but there were so many young hungry spirits in this room that wanted rebellion. It was electric in the air as the announcement of a new egg hoard came across the space, murmurs of excitement cutting through the grey sombre attitude that had resided just before. More dragons was excellent news, however they would not be ready for bonding soon. For now, they had to handle the ranks that were of age.

A surplus of young dragons and unbonded riders, they made up a very large proportion of the resistance. However, there had been very few natural bondings. At the thought, his hand moved to his wrist and rubbed gently at the spot his mark was etched into his skin. At the touch, the announcement of choosing riders moved across the room. Callisto cocked and eyebrow and looked up towards their leader as he began to list names confidently. Despite the confidence, Callisto couldn’t help but wonder how many of those names were about to become a snack to a particularly feisty dragon.

As the unbonded riders began to make their way up to the platform, Callisto almost jumped out of his skin as Ian materialised from a crack in the rock quite near him. He hadn’t seen the man wiggle his way into the space, and now he was pottering over towards his dragon. Letting his initial surprise ebb away, Callisto found himself following Nicodemus’s path into the shadows with his dragon. They were talking but it was too quiet for him to make anything out.

For a few moments, he remained planted where he was and observed the unbonded and their reaction to the approaching beasts. The first woman to be approached was eerily calm despite the particularly nasty dragon that bared its fangs towards her. In fact, was she..smiling at it? She was going to a handful. After a little more studying, Callisto’s brows rose up towards his hairline. He recognised her, she was in his year at the academy. He never really spoke to her, but he knew that she had lost her fiance in one of the earlier, smaller raids before the resistance. Then not long after her huge terror of a female had been stuck down. Their cries were piercing across the fields that day. Callisto could not fathom the pain the loss of both of the most important beings in her life must have brought.

Edging his feet away from the platform, he took his time and care to avoid any incoming dragons. He was heading towards Ian and his dragon, he wanted to know if he recognised any of the chosen unbonded riders. Figuring out any of their attributes would be very helpful in deciding how they might need to be trained up.

Finally, Callisto slipped out from behind a long purple tail and lifted a hand in swift greeting.

“Ian.” He was never one for overly friendly conversation if it wasn’t required. “What are your thoughts on them?” Callisto didn’t turn to gesture towards the platform, instead he kept his eyes solidly on the pair. Only offering Eidothea a small glance, the tiniest dip of his head before he returned his pink eyes to Ian.

“Any of them promising?” His voice was level, currently he held little opinion on the bunch. Apart from maybe that woman, but she may have changed. Waiting for his answer, Callisto leaned his weight onto one leg and crossed his arms over his chest. The muscle hidden beneath pushing out a little at the constriction of the fibres. His expression plain, eyes lacking a glint of light natural lighting may have offered him, painting his eyes almost reddish.

Mag'nar Azarmaeldan
Fire Dragon | Male | Unbonded | Mentions: Unclaimed Riders & Dragons; Cassia [Dir.]

Eyes that glowed similarly to the flames of an uncontrolled fire scanned the various figures standing upon the platform. He briefly scanned the ones that other dragons seemed interested in, particularly a human woman who seemed to contain violence that Mag'nar could practically feel weeping from her pores. However, a dark dragon seemed enamored with her, so he passed on her despite his curiosity.

He was about to move away when a woman, of seemingly around average height, at the end of the row caught his eye. She seemed... nervous? Which wasn't odd, most did when it came to being under the eye of dragons. But she seemed nervous for other reasons too. He could hear the murmurs coming from parts of the crowd directed at her, and he hissed menacingly in their direction. They were a resistance, they relied on one another, such talk was unacceptable in his book. Perhaps they were merely jealous of her own motivation?

Moving over to the chestnut haired woman, he appraised her blatantly, sitting back, his head reared back to take her in fully as he looked at her up and down. She was muscular and healthy looking, not a petite thing that would get swept away with a mere gust. He turned unnerving eye towards the crowd, specifically any eyes watching her and bared his teeth is aggression and warning, forcing them to step back at least once, preferably twice. He could practically here Jurate scolding him from across the cave, but he paid little mind to his friend's musings.

Mag turned his attention back to the woman and lowered his head to look at her face, before breathing a thick plume of dark smoke around her. "You," he growled out as softly as he could manage, "what is your name, girl?" He puffed his wings out a bit to block any of the crowd from being able to look at her, and he reached out with a singular, warm claw to tap her chest. "Do not mind or listen to their words. Humans, I've learned, can be cruel and jealous even in times when unity is required," he spoke truthfully, his normal gruffness pushed to the side.

Keo Yeong
Resistance Member | Female | Unbonded Rider | Mentions: Nicodemus (ind), Kikimora (ind), Unbonded Riders, Ciaran

Rubbing sleep out of her cool, dark eyes, Keo blinked into the darkness. There was no light, which meant it must be the small hours of the morning. A piece of hair stuck to the corner of her mouth and she could taste the alcohol in the back of her throat from the night before. She was frustrated. There had been a mission yesterday and she'd been unable to do much to help due to her lack of a mount. It made her blood boil. It was fucking ridiculous that she was stuck as a nurse, cook, maid, and whatever other jobs could be found for her. "AGHHH!" she screamed into the small room, reaching for something to throw and only finding her worn out pig plushie. There was no way she was throwing Snout, he was way too cute. "You're all I can rely on, li'l dude," Keo mumbled as she put Snout down on her pillow.

Dragging herself out of bed, Keo ran a hand through her messy hair, the piece that had crusted to her cheek coming off with a satisfying sensation. Cold water sent a chill down her spine as she splashed her face. It ran down her chin, down her neck, dampened the collar of the grey sweatshirt she wore to bed every night. She pulled on a tight fitting, long sleeved navy shirt to replace the smelly hoodie. Dark brown pants accompanied the top, and she finished clasping on the chain-like necklace that hung almost to her naval. Keo then tied on a navy choker to match her shirt, small metal studs appearing in even intervals around the collar.

A quick swig of spirits to help her numb the bitterness a bit before she headed to get food, and she was off.

The first thing that jumped out at her was Ciaran in an outfit that was clearly new. Closer inspection also brought a smudge of dark lipstick to Keo's attention, on Cia's neck. I'm not in the mood for this shit, she thought as she stared down the pale toned woman with obvious frustration. Yeah, she was hot, of course she got attention, but couldn't she have the decency to wipe off the signs of her affairs? Her fork scraped louder than necessary as Keo scooped up the last of her meal. She deposited her dishes with an unnecessary amount of force and saw herself off to the meeting.

Nicodemus stood bravely at the front of the crowd, on an elevated platform. His wingless bond loomed behind him like a guard dog, commanding respect. Keo couldn't help but admire them, bud didn't everybody? That's what you want in leaders.

The mention of bonded pairs being lost, two at that, pissed her off. If she'd been there, everyone would've made it back. Or the returning party would've been larger, at the least. What was she doing running errands that any teenage kid could do? She should be fighting the fight with a dragon under saddle, earning her place here.

New bonds? Chosen ones? The idea thrilled her. This was her chance. It wasn't surprising when her name was called. It made perfect sense. Practically prancing, she marched through the crowd with a satisfied expression. The jealous mutters around her pissed her off, but she didn't pay them much mind. It was only natural that she'd been chosen for this, and they needed to understand that it wasn't a light burden to take, either.

Climbing up next to the other potential new riders, she scanned their faces. Some looked bold, daring the dragons to try anything. Some were obviously intimdated, and others had expressions difficult to read. It seemed an interesting group, and she looked forward to getting to know whoever else in this group was chosen. That's when she processed Ciaran's face among them, the silvery strand in otherwise charcoal hair giving her away, even in Keo's buzzed excitement. What was she doing up here? She didn't belong here, she belonged somewhere safe, somewhere like the infirmary or laundry room, doing helpful tasks that wouldn't get her killed. This could be her last moment, if a dragon simply chose to make it so. Keo just crossed her fingers that Cia wasn't chosen, but also wasn't made a dragon treat. Keo didn't know that she could take the stress of seeing Cia as a rider, not with this strange affection she had for the woman.

Keo shook off the sudden stress in her shoulders, shoving her hands in her pants pockets and watching the dragons that approached. She was intrigued by a few, and a few didn't quite catch her attention. To be honest, every dragon was worth admiring, through her gaze, but she did hope it was one of the cooler ones that looked her way. Either way, she'd just be grateful to be on the front lines like she needed to be.

Ivara || Female || 277 || Unbonded Storm Dragon || M: Nicodemus & Kikimora (Ind), Unbonded Dragons & Riders (Ind)

At the back of the one of the smaller dens the cavern held, Ivara lay curled into herself on top of a mossy nest – her head resting snuggly on her paws and tail, its fluffy tip billowing out just after the side of her jaw. Her chest rose and fell slowly and steadily, carrying a quiet rhythm of its very own. It was the most any could view of her if they were to look inside. Her darker colored back faced the entrance, blending well into the shadows around her save for the singular white patch on her neck. Her brilliant eyes were open despite her apparent sleeping position. They trained on nothing in particular, their bright violet and blue unusually dull and listless. Though awake, she had no intention of moving any time soon – pleased to merely lay there for an hour or two more.

Words rang from the central cavern, fluttering into her ears and snapping her blank mind to attention. At least that was her plan until she heard the start of Nicodemus’ address, thanking what she could only assume to be the gathered crowd for showing up. Ah, the meeting. She had forgotten that it was set to take place this morning. Thankfully, her cave was relatively close to the gathering, ensuring that she would not miss anything terribly important. Still, it would be improper of her to not show up.

Her claws curl into the edge of the soft, mossy bedding of her nest in reluctance, audibly but lightly scraping against the smooth stone flooring. Stealing herself with a quick puff of a breath she stands, moss falling off her pelt as she does so. Her steps take her to the entrance of the den, looking out over the mass of humans and dragons gathered about. Above them was the leading pair, Nicodemous and his dragon, Kikimora. A formidable being she was despite the injuries she had sustained during the attack. It was a wonder she was still standing, though her being alive only served to portray her might.

It was around the time of her arrival when the deaths of the group’s latest fallen companions were shared, lost during their previous mission. A solemn chitter leaves her at this sorrowful mention. She knew neither pair personally, having only truly seen or heard of them in passing. Still, a pang of sorrow wafted over her heart for their loss. Then again, better they die together than apart.

A second, more uplifting update soon follows the mournful one. The addition of a newly laid clutch to the resistance. Her dual gaze casts itself onto the clutch’s mother, Mahvash, at the mention, easily spotting her due to her rosy glow. The stormy female could only imagine how she felt in this moment, torn between missing her mate and being joyous for having laid their eggs. It was not a situation she ever wished to find herself in.

The storm dragon’s attention shifts back to the head of the resistance as he begins the last topic of the meeting, watching as he moves to lean against his shadow of a dragon. However, its contents were not what she had been expecting. A request for dragons to form chosen bonds with one of the resistant’s members. A hushed growl escapes her as the very prospect of his wishes, not out of anger or outrage but uncertainty. It was a big ask for any dragon to partake in this, let alone in a room full of those who’d already lost their own natural riders. Her own heart twisted at the mere idea of taking another as her rider – at the idea of replacing her. This suggestion may as well have been outrageous as they come!

Yet, as the called-upon humans made their way to the stage, Ivara found herself watching each of them closely – her elongated tail swishing across the scattered moss and stone behind her. She was not ready for another bond, she and everyone else knew of this. She was one of those that had been particularly shaken by her rider’s death. Her usual active self had been reduced to nothing more than a mourning husk in recent times, left to stir in her own guilt and sadness. But, as her gaze panned across dragon and human alike, over the few remaining pairs left alive, something stirred within her. She could say here and do nothing, wallowing in her own self pity and heartache while the others risked their bonds and lives for the war… Or she could stand up and fight for what was left of this kingdom, to prevent any more from enduring the same pain…

No, no bond would come of her tonight. But, perhaps for the sake of others, it wouldn’t hurt to take a look.
