Adilsa is a small deer herd in the high mountains. Their days are spent grazing in foggy mountain hillsides under the pale white sun, splashing through opal brooks, and frolicking through narrow mountain passes. Up here they live a peaceful existence, preyed upon only by the rare cougar and the giant eagles overhead. To healthy and swift individuals, these occasional threats are barely a threat at all.
-
It all started this spring, when this year's fawns were mainly born still, only a few born healthy and alive. Even less made it past their first two months... a peculiar enemy had arrived. Two, that is.
-
First came the boars, a rare but not unheard of threat that preyed only on the fawns and the sickest deer. The second was the illness that seems to strike without warning and without pattern; not contagious from deer to deer, and yet spreading like a wildfire. Deer can safely snuggle up with an ill relative, or they can isolate themselves from all the sick ones... and somehow, the isolated one will get just as deathly sick as everyone else, while the one caring for their ailing sibling will be fine.
-
The first victims were the does who had stillborn fawns in the Spring and some random bucks from the herd. Back then they had symptoms of lethargy, but it was considered the usual brainfog... now they know it was not. The disease presents itself in three phases; phase one (1-4 weeks), a horrible lethargy and progressively declining mental clarity. Phase two (2-3 weeks), a chest-rattling wheeze and sneezing, usually weakening of the body as the deer begins to waste away. It is also in this phase when joints begin to randomly lock up, muscles freezing and aching against the deer's own will, stumbling around and trembling in the later progression of the illness. Phase three... usually death, when the ability to swallow can vanish entirely.
-
It's unknown what's causing this, but the numbers of the herd are dwindling fast. There is barely another generation to take over after them. The boars are beginning to outnumber them, their larger population giving them the courage to start to drive the deer out of their land. However, the herd morals make it hard to leave, as the numerous sick deer cannot keep up with the herd. Will you fight for your ancestral territory, or will you make the choice to leave these cursed lands and your ailing kin behind? Will the disease be cured, or will the mysterious illness vanish as quickly as it arrived?
Is this truly the fate of Adilsa?

RolePlay Rules
1. Hate the character, not the player.
2. I expect post lengths to be 2+ paragraphs with decent grammar. I won't be too strict with high literacy, but I do expect effort into every response.
3. Reservations last 12 hours. I will DM you when time is up just in case you want to renew the reservation (assuming your form is not yet complete).
4. No godmodding, Mary Sues, etc etc.
5. Please communicate with me! If I am DMing you something RP-related, especially a question or an activity check, I expect a response. If I am suggesting edits to your form, I expect confirmation on if you are taking these edits into consideration or are removing yourself from the RP entirely. Communicate with your fellow RPer as well!
6. There is a two character limit per person, however this may be expanded if more players than anticipated sign up.
7. No romance between your own OCs. I highly encourage fleshing out pre-established relationships with your fellow RPer, either in the discussion or through DMs. This will also help the herd feel closer. (I might make it mandatory to make a list in the discussion explaining your character's thoughts and opinions on other herd members so everyone can get an idea).
8. The deer have also gone through a lot, so don't be afraid to mention recently deceased loved ones. Some deer have survived the illness, though not without some lasting symptoms such as the occassional muscle spasm or lingering brainfog. I will allow 3 characters max to be survivors of the disease. Just make sure your characters aren't too angsty and sopping wet pathetic and have a sob-story that at least fits what's already been set up. other than that go be free

Herd Rules
1. The Sovereign must be treated with respect at all times, and so should their word.
2. To challenge the Sovereign, one must announce that they want to duel, and they must do so with at least one deer present as a witness. The duel itself must be taken to a place where the dukes/duchesses can observe it. If the Sovereign is dethroned, the new potential leader must compete in the challenges that prove them worthy of the title, and must finish them within a week - otherwise, the old Sovereign can regain their title.
3. Fawns must only be birthed in Spring. To carry a fawn when you know it will arrive in late Summer only sets up your fawn for death in the first snow, and yourself and your mate for ridicule.
4. Always stay within fifteen meters of the herd, especially during migrations.
5. You may never turn a deaf ear to the cries of a herd member in need. If no one else is responding, the responsibility lands fully upon you.
6. Dukes and Duchesses are to be respected at all times as well, and their word must be taken almost as seriously as the Sovereign's. If you believe a Duke/Duchess is not doing their job correctly, you can bring it to the Sovereign directly.
possibly more to be added

Lore
Deer of Adilsa
The deer of Adilsa are small, usually 1.7-2.8ft tall at the shoulder. They most resemble whitetails in build, with the large ears of a muledeer and the tusks of a tufted deer. They also have shorter legs with dense fur around their hooves like that of a draft horse, and small scruffs on their neck and shoulders that look like partial manes (think similar to a black wildebeest). Like most deer species, does have no antlers. Buck antlers most resemble these, but occasionally their largest stags will have antlers antlers like this.
Deer of Adilsa come in many colors and have many markings. As long as your deer isn't bright neon I will probably accept it, but they should keep a semi-realistic colorscheme and have deer-like markings. I understand that deer are kind of lacking in the marking department though so feel free to give them mustang stripes or spots or whatever.
Adilsa deer can be monogomous, but usually are not. Mated pairs occur in higher ranks usually (but it is not unheard of for lower ranks to find love with each other). Mostly the deer of the herd will have fawns with outsiders every Spring to keep their population from becoming isolated.
However, (because i know WPers love romance), sometimes deer will have mates that they return to every summer/fall from other herds, sometimes deer will even convince their mate to leave their herd and join Adilsa officially, and still others will have secret rogue affairs. It depends on the individual.
Territory
Adilsa inhabits some of the highest altitudes mammals can withstand. They are an almost isolated population, newcomers only joining in late summer and fall when the herd briefly migrates to the valley to mingle with others. For the most part, they live in a small bowl-like formation in the mountains with a small misty meadow, roaring waterfall, and gentle stream. In the spring they have pleasant hills of wildflowers, and in winter they take shelter in the small spruce grove.
There are many rocky mountain passes in and around their territory, but being deer, they rarely venture into them to avoid injuring a limb. The unique geography offers them some good vantage points.
The main meeting place of the herd is at the pine grove. There is a rocky outcropping here, not too steep but still elevated ground, that the leader and their second in commands usually govern meetings from.
Beliefs
Adilsa is a spiritual herd, but not too organized in their beliefs. Mainly their 'religion' is just a collection of superstitions. Butterfly wings are good luck, and pregnant does usually have some dangling from the ears to herald a safe and healthy birth. Rainbows are an omen... good or bad, that depends on where the rainbow lands. More westward is bad, more eastward is good. The list goes on.
Overall, Adilsa deer lead their lives following a loose set of superstitions and spiritual beliefs. They do think there is an afterlife, but they do not claim to know it. The deer think that foggy nights are when the veil is thinnest, and if you see a shadow in the mists that does not respond to your friendly greeting, it may be someone coming back to this realm for a visit.

Ranks + What They Do
Adilsa is not known for its complex social structure as they don't generally have a need for it. Below are the few distinct roles they have
[Sovereign]
The leader of Adilsa is called the Sovereign. They are in charge of guiding the herd, leading migrations and watching over them during the day and night. They make sure everyone is safe and direct their herd to only the best land, defend their herd, and keep everything organized to the best of their ability. Their word is not final, but should be treated with utmost respect and only disobeyed under extremely dire circumstances. They usually assume the rank by proving their worth in a series of tests. This rank is not inheritable, it is earned.
[Dukes/Duchesses]
They help the Sovereign lead the herd. They maintain order and usually flank the herd during migrations to make sure no one is left behind. They are also in charge of scouting ahead in certain situations, leading when the Sovereign is sick or absent, and overseeing herd functions of lesser importance. Rules are made by the Sovereign and their Dukes/Duchesses together to avoid any one deer becoming too powerful.
[Laech + 1-2 Laech Apprentices]
The laech are the healers of the herd, herbalists and a respected rank. They can have up to two apprentices at a time, though most of the herd is usually decently knowledgeable on their herbs. The laech only has a set healing place in the herd's usual mountain bowl - the small spruce woods, where shelter and warmth is easier to find. If the herd is migrating, usually 1-2 laech and their respective apprenctices will stay behind to tend to the ill. This is never an ideal situation... which is another reason why the herd is stuck wondering if they should leave or stay, because the laech have ill deer to tend to, but they themselves are perplexed by where the illness is even coming from.
[Buck]
The male deer of Adilsa. More mature bucks are called Harts (5-7 years of age). Bucks are usually expected to follow an unspoken code of courage, strength, and chivalry, though of course every deer in Adilsa is different.
[Does]
The female deer of Adilsa. More mature does are called Hinds. Like bucks, does have their own code, usually encouraging wisdom, courage and politeness.
Motherhood (and fatherhood for any bucks worried) are completely optional, but highly encouraged, as the herd's future depends on it.
i may flesh out these last two roles more I Zon't Know
[Fawns]
Self-explanatory. The fawns of Adilsa should be around 2-4 months old at this time. There are not many of them this year.
[Rogues]
Dispersal bucks, and sometimes even does, who are lingering around Adilsa territory. Usually frowned upon for the Sovereign as they intrude on the territory, grazing what is not theirs and risking running off with one of the Sovereign's deer.
more tba maybe
