that's why I offer skeb style comms too! They usually only have one wip during sketching to ensure all the details of the character are correct. Everything else is a surprise-the pose, colors, style etc,etc. Its a good option and I love getting them done myself for my characters. I usually do them discounted since I have so much fun with them!

I never want to get WIPs because comms are like Christmas Presents to me but I also get so nervous when i pay first before receiving art.
One thing I hate is when I'm doing art trades because then I don't know who should send the piece first, those are so easy to get scammed by

that's exactly what i did at the start of my comms but had a few people mention that they'd like less updates / only the one WIP so i began just doing that. it's difficult to tell who does and doesn't want more updates xD

my go to is an update when I finish the sketch, an update half way through lineart to see if anything needs to be changed, and then another when I start coloring and rendering. I've found it works well.

the thing that sucks the most about the sitaution is I'm pretty understanding, I get it, life happens, I was willing to wait as along as she communicated and gave me updates. Updates were few and far inbetween in that time period, I had to message repeatedly to get any acknowledgement and it was always for a different reason. My comm was for a ref sheet and I ended up not being happy with the results because it was missing a lot of the details we had spoken about, that I had paid extra to have revised in the beginning of this whole process. I still have the ref sheet but I'm hoping on getting it redone by a different artist soon because it just wasn't what I wanted.
