I agree mistclaw, it should have been changed backend and tested first then offered as an alternative mode. I'm really struggling with it now.

Thank you, found it with a bit of trial and error. Probably need a bit more fiddling to get that to work. Neither mode seems very promising just at the moment though.

Hello there! Welcome to the comprehensive guide all about artwork. Here we will cover everything from the three big avatar rules, to how to properly credit an image, as well as where you can find images and the best sites to edit them on. This could be a good reference to those who are maybe thinking of getting into the avatar business or perhaps have just had difficulties with an avatar in the past. But I'm not going to hold you up with some long intro. Lets just get right into it. Shall we?

The Three Requirements

There are three major requirements a member's avatar must meet before it will get accepted onto the game. The big three are;

-Stock Image (it's stealing if it's not stock)
-Proper Crediting (it's stealing if you don't credit the proper owner)
-No Hotlinking (yet another form of stealing)

Failure to meet one of those three major requirements will be cause to have your image taken down until it is corrected. These are not the only requirements you must meet but they are the major ones and the most common reasons why a person may have their image removed. We will get more in-depth on each of them in a little while.

Minor Requirements

Some other requirements images must meet are as follows;

-Avatar size should be no greater than 300 x 300 pixels.
-Banner size should be no greater than 710 x 150 pixels.
-All content of the images must be game appropriate.
-Content of the avatar may not hint at or mention triggering subjects. (ex: abuse or suicide)
-Images of humans are allowed with restrictions. No human photography or realistic portraits allowed. Cartoon/anime/chibi-style is okay.
-Images from fandoms or drawn from fandoms are strictly not allowed.
-When selling/auctioning art, payment should be paid after the art is completed.

Regarding Reselling: If art is purchased with a no selling agreement then it can not be resold, otherwise it's ok. If you do not wish for your art to be resold please include a No-selling Clause.

Stock Images

Alright so this is a big step and one that many people seem to struggle with. I myself am always asked questions such as "what is stock?" or "where can I find stock images?". I am sure the other mods are asked this all the time as well. And if I am being honest I always have difficulties answering as I find the explanation difficult to put smoothly into words so I apologize if this get's confusing. I am going to do my best.

"What Is Stock?"
Stock photography is a collection of photos which are available for use and commercial design. A stock image is a specific photo in that collection. The original photographer of the image has allowed it to be used. There are many sites out there that have collections of stock photos but a good one to use would be Deviant Art. Which gets into answering that second question...

"Where Can I Find Stock Images?"
As I just mentioned... a good location one can find stock images on is Deviant Art. You just have to know where to look for them and where to double check the permissions of the image. Well we will be covering that now. There are other sources out there that may provide images acceptable for use, however I am not going to cover all of them, just DA since that is the major one and most commonly used one.

First step, go to DeviantArt ( http://www.deviantart.com/ )

(Hold down on the image and select "open image in new tab" to enlarge)

Type in your key words. Sometimes the simpler it is the better. Even just putting in "wolf stock" will turn up a lot of excellent results.

(Click this symbol!)

(Hold down on the image and select "open image in new tab" to enlarge)

After you have looked through the results and found a few images you think you might like to use, you will want to check the permissions. You should ALWAYS double check the permissions of an image in the description. It is also a good idea to see where the image is categorized. Does it show up in Stock Images? Notice in the image below how the image shows up under Stock Images and the photographer blatantly states that the image is allowed to be used as stock in photo manipulations.

(Hold down on the image and select "open image in new tab" to enlarge)

If an artist says that their image is not allowed to be used... respect that. Do not try to use it. We (the mods) will be checking anyway and will remove avatars where permission is not given. Another red flag which you may want to look further into is if the image is not categorized under Stock Images such as the previous one was. Below is an example of a description where an image would be allowed for use.

© HOTNStock (DeviantArt)
(Hold down on the image and select "open image in new tab" to enlarge)

If the description makes no mention of it being okay or not okay for use then one should automatically assume it is not okay. However you may send the owner of the image a message asking for permission. However be aware that if they say yes you will be asked to provide proof of permission to the mods so you will want to take a screenshot and contact a mod. It would be better to make contact with us first rather than waiting for us to take your image down and to contact you then.

I hope this all makes sense. Below is a list of DA users who are known to provide a lot of stock images, for anyone having trouble finding a good source.. They are probably worth checking out.

If you have another source you commonly look at for stock images which is not on this list, please PM me (or another mod) to add that source to the list. I will check it out for myself and if it looks good (is stock and provides a wide variety of images, not just one or two) it will be added to the list.

Known & Trusted DA Sources
Please note that mods will still be checking every avatar and the images used in it to make sure it is really from where you say it is... just slapping one of the following names on any old image you want to use thinking we aren't going to check on them is not going to work. If we don't find the image where you claim to have gotten it from you will be contacted and the image removed.

HotNStock

Other "Stock" Sites

There are a lot of sites out there that have "stock" in their name or will claim that they are a stock site. HOWEVER... In the majority of cases this is FALSE and the images on these sites may have been taken without permission of the artist. Or they might really be stock but the site requires you to pay for the image in some way. Here at WP members should not have to be paying real money for an image in their avatar... A prime example of this would be shutter-stock. They both require payment for use of their services as well as have images that may have been put there without the original artists permission... making it a prime example of what I was explaining above.

Pay to use stock is allowed to be used, but we may ask for proof of purchase.

AI Art

We support artists and the hard work they put into perfecting their craft. We do not allow AI Art on our site. Not for sale, and not for personal use.

Editing Your Image

So this one is going to just be a brief little section and more about listing a few sites that a person can edit images on as that is a common question I get asked. A list of a few good sites is given below, it will be up to you to learn them by yourself however. Maybe try each of them and see which one you like best. Experiment with the effects, text, and more!

Note: Generally you do not need to credit what editing program you use. However if a special effect or filter is used (perhaps an overlay) that may change the image drastically, or make it appear as you have missed crediting a part of the image... Please credit the editor to avoid confusion for us mods.

Crediting Images

Alright... So I think this is one of the bits that seems to confuse people the most. How to properly credit an image. I will do my absolute best to describe this in a way people will be able to follow. I apologize if it gets confusing though.

But now that we have our stock images, we have checked and double checked that they are actually stock, and you have had the chance to play around with a couple of editing sites... it's time for one of the most crucial steps. The crediting. First thing is first. Return to the site where you got your original image, whether it is deviantart or elsewhere. Depending where the image is from crediting it may be a little different...

Deviant Art (DA)

If you are taking image(s) off of DA to use (and you have already checked and double checked permissions) then you need to make sure that you are crediting the specific account you took the image(s) from. Just crediting DeviantArt or DA is not specific enough.

DA is a large site. We (the mods) need to be able to track down exactly where you are taking the images from so that we may check the credits and permissions ourselves. Now you don't have to type out the full link to the exact image... Those can get long and unsightly to show in the credits.

Just the account name is usually good and we can generally track it down from there.

Lets say you are using an image from HotNStock. For your credits you would want to put: HotNStock @ DA or HotNStock.DA, either way is acceptable. If multiple images are used, all taken from different sources, you want to make sure you are crediting all of the images. Make sure to double check your spelling!!! Even a small typo will direct us to the wrong DA account and when we are unable to find the image used on it... the avatar will end up getting taken down.

Other Sources

When using an image from a source other than DA generally all that is needed would be a site address. However if it is a site similar to DA with user accounts, you will want to make sure to specify the specific account on that site. For sites other than DA make sure you are giving us the full site name. We may not recognize abbreviations for specific sites.

Please Remember: Mention and talk of other games are not allowed!

This includes in your avatar. So crediting an account on another game will not be allowed. Likewise, unless it is a Go Go Gatsby game created by our own eve, the images there would not be allowed for use anyway. If you ever have any sort of doubt about how to credit something from another site... please bring it to a mod, we are more than happy to assist you and it is better to ask first rather than take a wild guess at crediting and getting it wrong thus forcing us to remove the avatar.

WolfPlay

Though WP images are easily recognized here, the rules still require that you credit the game for images used from it. The backgrounds already have a copyright on them so as long as it remains visible you would be fine to leave it at that. If you use a wolf cut out, be sure to add a copyright somewhere.

Yourself

If you made your avatar, either drew it or took a photo of something yourself, then the only person you need to credit is yourself. To do that you would put either your pack name or your pack number. Pack numbers are generally preferred as they are easier to check. Members can change their pack names, but pack numbers will always stay the same.

Make sure the images are 100% your own... Mods will still be checking them before approval and if your image is found to have originated elsewhere or is displayed somewhere else, then this can be seen as art theft and there will be consequences.

If you took the photo yourself... a mod may ask about it so be prepared to provide some sort of proof that it is your own. Another instance where you would want to credit yourself is if you are making a photo manipulation. After you have properly credited the images used you will also want to credit yourself for making it.

Credits In Bio

If you do not wish to obscure your image with credits, it is okay to put your image credits in your pack bio. However you need to make sure you KEEP them there. If they are removed at any time, it could be removed later. You also want to make sure they are displayed CLEARLY at the top or the bottom and not hidden somewhere in the middle of the presentation. If we can't easily find the credits we may assume they aren't there and again... that's cause for removal of your image.

Credits in Notes

Same as crediting in your Pack Bio. Place it somewhere visible. And make sure your notes are visible, because oftentimes... they aren't. And the image will be removed.

Crediting Wyndbain Wolf Makers or DollDivine Makers

So since there have been a lot of these popping up around the game and there seems to be a lot of confusion on how they should be properly credited... I thought I would give it it's own little section here.

Now the majority of these images popping up are getting credited to DollDivine where they found the game. This is incorrect crediting! DollDivine did not make the game, they are simply hosting it.

Credits should be made to the games creator which is Wyndbain @ DA. Yes they have a copyright on the image there... however that is not always enough. With re-sizing that copyright often becomes illegible or sometimes people will crop it out or cover it up thinking the DollDivine credits will be enough. It's not. Credit for these types of avatars belongs fully to Wyndbain and again... the credits must be properly displayed.

No Hotlinking

This is the last major step in when uploading images. It's a fairly simple one to follow and yet is one that some people still seem to have trouble following both on the game and here in the forum. You can't just link to any old image off of google or another site... that is stealing the sites bandwidth which can be a major issue for some as the sites get billed for the extra data used.

So rather than throwing any old link up for your thread... lets make sure we are properly uploading to an image hosting site who's main function is to host and display such images. They will provide you with a direct link which is the link you would want to copy and paste when uploading an image.

Please note that DeviantArt is NOT an image hosting site.

Many people seem confused on that and will link from there. This is a prime example of what hotlinking it. Check the list of acceptable sites below for one that will work for you. There may be other sites that are okay to use that are not listed here. These are just some of the most common ones.

─ Post Image

─ Image Shack

─ ImgSafe

─ ImageBam

─ ImgBB (ibb)

Please note that Imgur, Photobucket, Toyhou.se and Deviantart are NOT acceptable sites to upload images from.

The above list will change if these sites have their Terms of Service changed.

---------

To post an image to the forums, take the direct link of the image. Go to Insert > Image and paste your direct link into the Source section. To prevent your image from being cut off, set your width to a value less than 600px and the height will automatically sort itself out.

Yes, but what if let's say, I made an image and used it as my avatar, and I also posted it on another website, lets say, my Deviant Art.
Is that still allowed?

Midnight Howlers-- No. Linking from deviantart is not accepted on Wolfplay. Please upload it to an image-hosting site. Some sites are posted in one of the sections above.
