The reason I asked is because your post stated that he walked up to the den ^^" . So that implied he walked right up to them and walked away, because yeah, the pups are out of the den and such, but they haven't moved that far away.
So basically what he just did was walk up to the den, sniff it, walk away and mask his scent all in their field of view.

Oh wait. So he was in the bushes just watching them? Nvm then, hmmm, Oleander could hear a sound. Because hiding in a bush is noisy even when being sneaky.
