Most people have craved silence at least once in their lives. When everything gets too loud and too overwhelming, there is no more comforting thought than a quiet place to reset, to have nothing but your own thoughts to disturb the peace.
━
However, there are different kinds of silence. The most terrifying is one that we all hope will be left only in the most unsettling of our dreams: running, but your legs are too slow, nearly impossible to move, screaming, but unable to make a sound.
━
Fourteen people, who have let go of reality.
Their parents watched them with unease and concern as slowly, the teenagers started to release their hold on their existence. With nothing tethering them, they floated, like balloons cut free. They stopped attending school, seeing other people, some even stopped talking.
These fourteen people don't know each other. They have walked different paths of life, in different places. Different things plunged them into this pit of emptiness. They only have two things in common.
One: They all feel the silence pressing in the inside of their skulls. There is no noise, but it screams that there is no point anymore.
Two: They have all been sent to the Mindfulness Retreat, a pretty name for a pretty place in Washington State, tucked away in rainy hills and fields of wildflowers. Picturesque, with large log buildings and ample space for the imagination to run wild.
It is not a summer camp. These people have been sent here in the middle of the school year because they weren't getting anything done in school anyways. Some of them are being pulled out of the psych wards that tried to manage the emptiness with medication. It is a last-ditch attempt by their guardians to get back the children they remembered.
━
It starts out, if not quite peaceful, quiet. Nobody has quite snapped out of the stupor that got them sent there in the first place. So when the first of them hear the voices, they don't question it immediately, Even when they do, they're not sure they should share.
But soon enough, it's all of them. Every one of the fourteen occupants of Mindfulness Retreat hears the whispers of stories dying to be told. The rich history that this place has is not one that anyone would have anticipated, but it might lead these teenagers towards a future where they really can fill the voids that they thought would swallow them whole.
