D R O U G H T

Everyone is used to heat, it's not something that surprises them when it comes around every year, it's something that, as uncomfortable as it is, is familiar. The horses know what it means: water will be scarce, and food will diminish. But it was never a promise of death.

Til Now.

A heat wave has cloaked the valley, simmering along it's surface so that water vaporizes, and all edible plant life wilts to dust. At first, it seemed like any other dry season with hot temperatures, long days, and little sustenance. But then the water began to disappear, even water sources that had been reliable in the previous years. Food followed shortly after, even the hardiest of plants and trees would fall, taking with them the whisper of hope. Then the horses began to drop like flies as well, whether it was from hunger, disease, or heat, it seemed no one was safe from the wrath of the sun.

Instinct for the Valley horses was to take cover and try to wait it out, that things would eventually get better. But then, they had never been so bad before. The Lead Stallion of the Herd knew that there was little left for them in the Valley, but change is terrifying for anyone. The worst thing happened though, when the Lead Mare, ill from heat exhaustion, was lost, unable to keep fighting any longer.

With a void in the herd, the Lead Stallion lead what was left of his raggedy herd, and departed from the valley in hopes of finding some place new to call home. It's a long, dry road ahead of them, but the thrill of the unknown and the hope of something better lingers on the air. Unfortunately, this hope, this promise, of something new and better isn't without it's perils. Other stallions still desire herds of their own, and mares might be more keen to leave given the cirumstances, willing to try their odds with someone else. Starving predators lurk in every crevice, awaiting for anyone to slip up enough for them to capitalize.

Where will you stand?

Roleplay Rules
Follow all WP and Eve's Rules.
1. Be Active. Seriously, do not join just to never be active. Also, do not claim a high rank if you aren't going to be active.
2. This is a Semi-Literate to Literate Rp, this needs to be shown in Rp forms And Posts.
3. Maxium Four Characters per Person. This will likely change with time.
4. Please keep genetics in mind when creating offspring. If you need a tool to help you, I can give you one.
5. Not all Horses (Stallions) can be gigantic. If I see too many being 17+ hh, I'll restrict it. There is nothing wrong with a short boi.
6. Orphaned foals ARE allowed in this Rp. HOWEVER, you must find someone to take care of your foal prior to being accepted.
8. Please Ask me before your mare has twin foals. Twins, especially healthy twins are rare, and likely someone isn't coming out unscathed, whether it be mare or foals.
9. If you've read everything so far, put the missing number in your form. Please hide it.
10. Mares can leave the herd, but they must do it without the Lead Stallion knowing. When you do this, you must give the LS a chance to interfere. Give him a chance to react/interact. If you don't I WILL call you out.
11. Stallions can also steal a mare from a herd. The mare ultimately can try to run away from him, and alert the LS if she wants, or she can go willingly.
12. That being said, for rule 10 & 11, please Pm Me FIRST. Just so there isn't 5 leaving all at once. If you've read this, put butterfly in your form.
13. Please have fun!

Valley Herd Rules
1. Mares & Foals are not to venture away from the herd without permission. Foals NEED supervision.

2. Any interaction with outside stallions is strictly prohibited. Familial relations will be on a case by case basis.
Ex: A son comes to visit his mother and/or father.

3. Herd Stallions are expected to be loyal to the Lead Stallion. If they aren't, they'll be removed from the herd.

4. Herd Stallions are also expected to protect the herd with their lives.

5. Herd Stallions Must obtain permission from the Lead Stallion to mate with a Herd Mare. They May Not, however, mate with the Lead Mare.

6. Colts/Young Stallions are to be kicked out from the herd at Year 3, unless they wish to join the ranks of Herd Stallion.

7. Lead Mare Can Not be Challenged for. It is appointed by the Lead Stallion, or by the herd (in the case the Lead Stallion chooses not to pick or is absent.)

The Valley Herd Roles
Explained

Lead Stallion

This is the Leading Stallion of the Herd. He is in charge of the protection of the herd, and also the rules of the herd. He is a big part of making decisions for the herd. His word is law, if you disobey him, it's basically treason, and the results will not be to your favor. He can decide which mares he wishes to foal with, and is herd stallions get to father foals as well. Being the Lead Stallion, he is who you have to beat in order to take over the herd, but not the only one.

Lead Mare
She is the Leading Mare of the Herd. She is in charge of leading the herd to different places for food, water, shelter, etc. She is also in charge of the mares in the herd, and helping them, etc. Like the Lead Stallion, her word is law. Typically she is a widely experienced horse who had gained knowledge from those before her. This is knowledge she instills in the young mares she births, and to those she has chosen as her successors. She doesn't have to be the Lead Stallions "mate", but he is supposed to be the only one allowed to father her foals. Her position cannot be challenged for, as she is appointed to the position, or inherits it.

Lieutenant
This is the stallion who the Lead Stallion trusts the most and typically has a deep bond with. Could be related to him, could just be a close friend. This stallion is whole heartedly loyal to the Lead Stallion, and accompanies him in fights, etc. When the Lead Stallion is away, the Lieutenant is the one left in charge, though more often than not, it's the Lieutenant getting sent off to do things. If the Lead Stallion dies in anything other than a challenge, the Lieutenant is who takes over, and would have to be challenged for someone to assume the Lead Position. Lieutenants can also choose to help the Lead Stallion with challenges, primarily if they feel the challenger isn't worthy. If it's a worthy opposition, especially if it's a single stallion challenging, the Lieutenant is known to stand down, as it would be an insult to the Lead. For challgenges, the Lieutenant is primarily there to keep things fair. So if two stallions try to challenge the LS, he can step in to fight so it's fair. The position of Lieutenant cannot be challenged for, it's appointed by the LS.

Deputy
Deputy or better known as Deputy Mare is the mare who is basically the Lieutenant to the Lead Mare. She is not the Lead Mare's successor, but a mare trained to assist the Lead Mare. She helps keep the Herd Mares in line, is there to support the Lead Mare through her foaling process (and vice versa), and she helps watch over the Lead Mares foal when she cannot. She can fill in for the Lead Mare when the LM is absent, but she does not take her position unless chosen by the LS, or the herd if he chooses not to pick. She understands she is not a successor, just a mare there to aid the Lead Mare. She is fiercely loyal to the Lead Mare, and helps to protect her in times of stress or danger. The DM would, undoubtedly, give her life for the Lead Mare, and be stolen before she would let the Lead Mare be. More often than not, the DM is the LM's sister or a close friend. Deputy Mare cannot be challenged for, she is chosen by the Lead Mare.

Herd Stallions
These are the stallions of the herd allowed to remain in the herd by the Lead Stallion. Their purpose is to protect the herd from threats, which includes carnivores, other stallions, etc. It's expected of a Herd Stallion to be willing to lay down his life for the herd if needed. If a Herd Stallion starts to get disrespectful or rebellious, he likely will be run out. If he attempts to challenge the Lead Stallion, and loses, he could be killed or run out. Herd Stallions must gain permission to father foals, for each mare they wish to foal with. If they don't they could be run out or killed. Their foal may even be left behind if the Lead Stallion feels insulted enough. Herd Stallions also keep Challenges fair. If a band of bachelors come and try to challenge the Lead Stallion, they will ensure that it isn't a 4v1, the strongest of them will join in, or they'll keep the rest of the band from fighitng and only allow the leader of it to fight. Ultimately, herd stallions live a rather cush life if they're loyal.

Herd Mares
These are the mares of the herd, and under the protection of the Lead Stallion. Mares tend to prefer herd life because it is safer for them and their offspring. Mares, though, are expected to show loyaly to their leads. They are expected not to wander off or help a Bachelor Stallion invade, though it does happen, typically because of the promise of "love". Herd mares who are found to aid in treasonous activity, may be left behind or kicked out. If their foals have been fathered by outside stallions, or with a stallion in the herd without permission, the foal may be left behind. Though this isn't all that common, safety is often more important. Herd Mares help each other take care of foals, and in the death of a mother, a mare may take on her foal so it doesn't suffer the same fate.

Yearlings
These are the young horses in the herd that range from a year to three years, and once they turn three they either join the adults of the herd, or leave (if they're colts). Unlike foals who have no responsibilities, Yearlings are expected to have some. They help watch over younger foals, keep sentry with adult horses and can scout too. This is so, when they are adults, they have an idea of what to do. Yearlings are never left to do things on their own, however, with time, it becomes natural and they'll start keeping a look out while with the herd. Yearlings are expected not to be so foalish either, so them running off won't be tolerated. It isn't tolerated as foals either, but consequences will become harsher.

Foals
These are the babies of the herd, the fillies and colts who are all under the age of one. They aren't expected to have responsibilities, but mares are expected to keep them under control and from causing trouble. If a foal leads a carnivore back to the herd, especially if someone is attacked, it'll be the parents getting in trouble alongside the foal. Foals, however, are supposed to be protected. If a foal dies under someone's watch, they are liable to be punsihed or exiled.

The Deceased Lead Mare

Sunna

Meaning "Sun"

Sunna was the Lead Mare along side Atolos, and was his mate. While he would have foals with other mares, Sunna was the one who had claimed his heart. She was 9 year olds when she died, having been a year younger than Atolos himself. They spent 5 years leading together, and have had multiple offspring together. Sunna died in the drought due to getting sick, and her body just deteriorating until she, and it, gave up and passed. It's important to know that Sunna was a kind and compassionate mare who was fair but lead with a solid and stern hoof. She wasn't the type to give in to mare drama, or let something slide. She was whole heartedly loyal to Atolos.

Color: Chestnut Sabino
Age at TOD: 9 Years

Offspring:
Open for offspring, including foal, yearling, etc.

If you wish to make a character related to Sunna, you must first ask me, Imperial Sands.

A T O L O S

Name:
Atolos

Meaning "The Changeable One" in Greek
Age:
10 Years

Gender:
Male/Stallion

Herd:
The Valley Herd

Rank:
Lead Stallion

Desired Rank:
Content

Appearance:

Atolos is a goliath of a stallion, a creature who clearly comes from a mixed bloodline. His features are almost reminiscent of something in the draft category, as the stallion is quite wildely built, and if he wasn't so tall, he might be considered stocky. However, Atolos does stand at a bit over 18 hh, maybe coming in at 18.1 hh or higher. He's truly of massive proportions, as he's big boned, muscular, and just in general appears to be quite hefty in appearance without really being fat.

The grayed stallion is equipped with a large head, muscular neck and shoulders, wide hindquarters, and hooves that resemble something like shovels. A well aimed kick from the male could be crippling to many, and he isn't shy about doing it either. One might be tempted to call such a massive equine a "gentle giant" but they would be mildly mistaken, as Ato has no qualms against using violence to achieve his goals. He evidentally isn't missing out on any testosterone judge on his appearance, so violence comes natural to him.

Born the darkest shade of midnight, Atolos was born the color of void. Like his mother before him, he was originally a black horse, but that was where majority of the similarities with his mother ended. Like his father, Atolos began to gray as he aged, to where now the only remnaints of his mother's black pelage lies along his legs. Even his mane seemed to bleached, hovering somewhere between white/grey and blonde, the sun doing it's job of tinting it's natural color with it's rays.

With time, the robust stallion as become seemingly dapplied along his coat. The markings are more prominent where the colors are more constrasting, looking like stars in a night sky. But those starry effects are still seen in even the palest parts of his coat. It gives him a rather pretty look, though such a masculine stallion would never refer to themselves as "pretty".

Atolos carries a few other traits from his mother, despite primarily taking after his father. For one, he has a similar splash of pink on his nose that she faintly carried. What he didn't get was her long, flowering mane and tail. His tail? Yes. But his mane is rather short, though it has a slight wavyness to it that she had. The last thing he got from her was his eyes, deep, dark and rich in color, they are like of the darkest chocolate, but they don't often share her warmness. Instead they have flecks of something different in them, a grey color, that allows the coldness of his father in. His scent is even something woody, but with a cold edge to it, something unidentified that makes it feel like a forest in the dead of winter.

Personality:
Atolos is usually a pretty easy going characters by stallion standards. He obviously wouldn't allow things to happen all willy nilly, but he didn't use to be very controlling or aggravated. Now, though, with the stress and loss of his Lead Mare, and previous mate, Atolos is grieving and not quite the same stallion.

Once relaxed and more gentle, the stallion has become gruff and short, having little tolerance for disobediance and drama. He doesn't look kindly on anyone making his life, or job, harder than it needs to be right now, and he isn't going to hold his tongue to spare anyone's feelings. Atolos is a much more stoic stallion, serious and stern becoming some of the main basis of her personality. He has his expectations for himself and the herd, and he makes sure they know it. He's been doing this long enough to know how to survive, and he expects to be respected because of it. If not? He's likely just to run someone out of the herd, and end it with a swift kick to remind them of their position.

This doesn't mean Atolos is heartless or anything of the sort. Quite the opposite. It's just that he hurts so bad, that he is closing himself off to protect himself until he has a chance to heal. If safety means cracking down on the herd, being more controlling and protective is what he will be if it keeps everyone safe. And Ato isn't the type to let anyone get in the way of whatever he needs for his herd. If you stand in front of him, be prepared to be run over.

Once his walls are down, a glimmer of the old Atolos shines through, a reminder that while the Herd lost a Lead Mare, a friend, maybe even a Mother, Atolos lost his mate, his partner, his lead mare, the mother of his foals, everything. Whose to say the stallion will ever love another the way he loved her? But Atolos loved her wholly, with every fiber of his being, and now those who are close to him get to experience a fraction of that. A loving Atolos is devoted, loyal, and powerful. There is nothing that could keep him from supporting and providing for his loved ones. He'd kill for them without a thought, and would do so multiple times if it meant they were safe, happy, and healthy. He'd risk his life for them without a second thought.

But that's not just the type of stallion Atolos is, in general and as a lead stallion. Protective, devoted, and loyal.

Name: Kage (Meaning "Shadow")

Age: 5 Years

Gender: Female

Herd: None, she's a loner.

Rank: Lone Mare

Desired Rank: She's fine being a loner

(Credit goes to Venomxbaby on DeviantArt - This is a stock image)

Appearance: Standing at 14hh, Kage is a rather small horse, in fact, small enough to be considered a pony. This mare has never been proud of her rather short height, however, that does not mean that she can't fly when it comes to a full-speed gallop. Kage's slender, small build as well as the tendancy to lift her feet high off of the ground when she runs has allowed her to outrun every horse that she's come across, as well as every hungry predator that's tried to make a meal out of her. Speed and agiliy is what this mare excels at. Kage is quite proud of this undeniable fact, however, Kage's incredible speed comes at the cost of her stamina, which she severely lacks. But, as long as Kage can outrun or overpower her persuers, then she's fine with her terrible endurance and unpraiseworthy stamina. In terms of strength, Kage has enough to fight off anybody that may challenge her or provoke her to fight, but not enough to fight off a large group of horses or a powerful stallion.

The name "Kage," meaning shadow, perfectly suits this mare. Kage's short, pure black fur that seems darker than a starless night sky is darker than any shadow, and makes her extraordinarily hard to see when night falls. However, this comes at the cost of sticking out like a blossom in a mud puddle during the daytime, making Kage easy to see to both possible threats and possible friends. In addititon to Kage's gorgeous black coat, this mare has a long, flowing mane and tail that blow in the wind behind her when she gallops, making her look like the definition of both elegant and graceful. Kage's also got dark, cloudy green eyes that almost seem like they could pierce right through anything that they're looking at. Kage is quite proud of her eyes, although, they're so dark that they almost appear to be black. Almost.

Kage's hindquarters and hocks are covered in scars, most of which are unseeable due to the sheer amount of caked blood, mud, and grime that they're coated in. This effects Kage's gait when she runs, making her look slightly strange, but, it does not slow her down. These scars were caused by a fight with a group of bachelors that Kage got into and thought that she could win, only to be outnumbered and ultimately overpowered, causing her to flee. Kage also has a clearly visible scar, although not a deep one, running from directly above her left eye to right above her nose. Kage thinks that this makes her look ugly, and is quite ashamed of how it looks. This mare also has some small scratches around her unnessesarily fluffy ears that have long been healed, and are no longer visible unless if looked closely at.

Personality: Kage tends to be a quiet, closed off mare that only talks to those whom she deems are worthy of her deep trust. She puts up walls around herself that're so tall and hard to break through that earning Kage's respect and trust is a feat that no loner has accomplished. Kage truly believes that if she were to open up even just a little and to trust another horse, then they'd just end up dying and leaving her behind, just like both her mother and former herd did. Both Kage's mother and her previous herd were wiped out by a disease when the drought began, and somehow Kage managed to be the sole survivor, although, she wishes that she'd died.

Kage does not come across many other lone horses, however, when she does, she tends not to talk to them much. In truth, this mare is quite shy and likes to keep talking to a minimum if she cannot avoid it altogether. Since she doesn't speak up very often, when she does, her words are usually worth hearing. Kage is also not one to complain about anything to anyone, because she'd hate to cause trouble for anybody, and she sees no point to it, anyway. One of the first lessons that Kage was taught as a young foal was never to cause trouble or hurt apon others, and shes tried her best to stick to what she's learned.

If one got to know and gain Kage's trust, then they may discover that truly she is short-tempered, snappy, and can be distant at times. However, she also is very intelligent as well as quick-thinking when she needs to be, and this mare's intellect has not failed her often. Deep down Kage truly cares about everybody's feelings, and empathy is the one social grace that she does not lack. If you're hurt, then this mare will try her best to perk you up or to take your burden apon herself if she can.

Kage tries to keep both her thoughts and feelings to herself, not wanting any horse, especially untrustworthy ones, to see her vulnerable side. She puts on a tough act around everyone that she meets, although she never does much talking, she is sure to reveal nothing about herself through her body language or actions. Kage also likes to stay away from herds of horses, but, sometimes she'll attempt to watch them from afar if she can find a place to hide that'll cover up her dark coat, or if it's the nighttime and her slender frame isn't very visible. Kage loves to gallop and the feeling of the wind blowing against her fur, and she even loves it when rain falls. In fact, Kage actually likes water a lot, and before the drought would ocasionally take a swim or roll in whatever river she could find.

Crush: None at the moment, open

Name:
Morena
Age:

6 Years
Gender:

Female/Mare
Herd:

The Valley Herd
Rank:

Herd Mare
Desired Rank:
None; She's Content.
Appearance:

Morena is a tiny mare, petite in stature, and is one who is often confused with being a yearling because of her size. Standing at right around 14 hh, maybe a smidge below, the small mare isn't winning any sort of height competitions any time soon. Along with her short size, the mare is also more dainty, delicately built than other mares. She does have a stockyness to her, but that comes from having birthed a few foals already. If someone really looked at her, they'd see the slim legs, narrower shoulders, and the defined hips.

With not having a lot of meat, or muscle, on her bones, Morena is not a powerful equine in the slightest, and even her speed is more average, though she has some get up and go when she desires. With her demure persona, the mare often comes across as even smaller than she is, and it's easy for her to be over looked within a herd of stronger, more wild mares. Not that Morena minds, though. She's never felt insecure about her size.

Small size aside, the mare could be considered rather pretty in appearance. She has a rather dark grulla coat, presenting itself as almost a deep chocolate brown color. Her face, and more down her legs, are so dark they appear almost black, though her middle is a slightly lighter brown. Overall, the mare is like an ombre of chocolate. Her mane, which is nothing to brag about, is more on the medium length, but it is also the luscious dark brown color that matches her coat. As if that wasn't enough, the mare's eyes are the same color, maybe even a shade darker. They aren't quite black, but they're definitely a dark cocoa color.
Personality:

Morena is a definitely a mare that's easy to overlook, but she doesn't ever seem to mind that fact. Quiet and demure, the little mare is not the type to cause trouble or raise her opinion against another. She's calm and level headed for the most part, but rather than mare's who are quick to anger, she's moreso quick to spook. She has a bit of anxiety, knowing she depends on others to pretty much keep her safe, and finds herself uncomfortable whenever she is alone because of this. With this being the case, Morena tends to have a much more go with the flow kind of attitude, her reasoning being she's choosing to live.

While being shy, Ren is definitely a caring and empathetic mare. She likes to help others, and will offer a comforting shoulder when those around her need it without ever expecting anything in return. That being said, that's kind of where that ends. You'll never find her purposely getting caught up in mare drama, and will quickly leave if that becomes the case, preferring to find the company of others who won't try and drag her in.

Morena is also a devoted and affectionate mother. She is ever vigilent when she has a foal, but this is where a surprisingly more stern side comes out of her. She doesn't really mess around when it comes to her foals, and she will step in to protect them instead of herself (though she will run with her foal if that is a plausible option). She holds her offspring to reasonable expectations, and does not allow misbehavior and rude mannerisms. She doesn't expect her foals to be as quiet and reserved as her, but she will insist on them being respectful.
