Sky felt a slight wave of comfort when Alex put his hand in his. He didn't know what they were, or what they would become, what mattered was that Alex was there with Sky and he wasn't going anywhere. "It's okay," Sky said, pausing for a moment before continuing, "You don't have to say anything." He finished. His voice was soft-spoken, but filled with many emotions. He didn't know what emotion to really feel at the moment. After a moment of silence, like a light switch, Sky's realization hit him. What had just happened, Alex was the one to witness it all. Alex was the one to take Sky's outburst of emotions and see him almost dead on the floor. Sky knew it was bad, but he just pushed those thoughts away, now they all came flooding back. He couldn't just pretend like nothing happened. "Im not." Sky began but stopped himself. He didn't want to argue at all, but he didn't want to not say anything. So he thought for a moment before opening his mouth again. "Alex I-." Sky began, slightly squeezing Alex's hand. "I didn't just overdose by accident." He confessed, his words much quieter than before. "I couldn't deal anymore, it was too much, I'm too much. You don't deserve this Alex." Sky said, his words coming out without any thought. He stopped squeezing Alex's hand, and pulled it away. Looking away, he began to grow afraid of what Alex would say. As much as he wanted Alex, and wanted to be with him, he couldn't bare to put him through this even more than what he'd already been through.

When Skylar spoke, his voice gentle but weighted with emotions, Alex couldn't help but look up at him, drawn by the sound. His gaze met Skylar's, and though there were still unshed tears in Alex's eyes and a frown pulling at his lips, he didn't bother to hide any of it. How could he? The two of them were standing on the precipice of something raw and fragile, and there was no room for pretending anymore. He could see it in Skylar's face too, the same whirlwind of emotions swirling beneath the surface, barely held in check. It was in his voice, trembling with vulnerability, and in the slight furrow of his brow as he tried to hold himself together. They were both teetering on the edge, and Alex could feel it as if it were his own emotions crashing into him.
`
Swallowing thickly, Alex nodded in acknowledgment of Skylar's reassurance, though is mind was anything but at ease. He squeezed Skylar's hand gently, a small gesture of solidarity in the face of whatever storm was brewing between them. He didn't say anything, sensing that Skylar needed the space to find his words. Alex waited, the silence between them stretching as Skylar seemed to gather his thoughts, weighing each one carefully before speaking. Alex's heart hammered in his chest, anxious for what was to come, but he remained patient, listening.
`
When Skylar finally began to speak, Alex's eyes drifted downward, focusing on the hand that still held his. But as Skylar squeezed his hand in return, Alex glanced back up, catching the look in Skylar's eyes - something distant, almost as if he was bracing for the worst. The words that followed hit Alex like a punch to the gut. The overdose wasn't an accident. The confession landed with a crushing weight, and Alex felt his chest tighten so painfully that it nearly stole his breath away. His heart stuttered, and for a moment, he was sure the world had stopped spinning. There was a stunned silence in the room, thick with the gravity of what had just been said. He didn't even need to see his own reflection to know that his face had twisted into a mixture of shock, horror, and disbelief. He stared at Skylar, the words echoing in his head over and over again. Not an accident.
`
How could this be real? How could Skylar - someone so important, someone who meant so much - utter something so devastating, so shattering?
`
Alex's throat felt tight, his mouth dry, as he struggled to form any coherent thought, let alone words. It was like being plunged into ice-cold water, his body in his shock, his mind frantically trying to catch up with what was happening. His grip on Skylar's hand loosened slightly, but he didn't pull away. He couldn't He didn't know what to do with this information, didn't know how to process it. And then Skylar's next words came, softer, almost resigned, but no less heart-wrenching. As if Alex hadn't already been on the edge of breaking, hearing Skylar pull away both physically and emotionally - feeling him withdraw his hand - was nearly enough to destroy him. The warmth of Skylar's hand, once a tether, was gone, leaving Alex feeling untethered as if he were floating in some terrible empty space where everything felt wrong.
`
"What...?" Alex stammered, his voice cracking. He shook his head slightly, trying to make sense of what Skylar was saying, his mind scrambling for an explanation that could fit, that wouldn't leave him in the dark. "What are you saying?" The tremble in his voice was impossible to hide now, and he didn't even try. How could Skylar say something like this? How could he even think it? "I don't deserve what?" Alex asked, his voice rising with a mixture of panic and confusion. His blue eyes searched Skylar's face, desperate to understand, to find some hidden meaning behind the words that didn't hurt so much. But all he found was the same pain reflected back at him, a mirror of the turmoil raging inside.
`
It was like the world had flipped upside down, and Alex couldn't get his bearings. He didn't deserve what? His mind was still reeling from Skylar's confession, struggling to grasp the enormity of what had been revealed. He had been prepared for anger, for blame, for Skylar to push him away because of the ambulance, or even because of the overdose itself. But this? This admission that the overdose hadn't been a mistake, that Skylar had chosen it - that was something Alex hadn't been ready for. His heart ached at the thought, at the realization of how deeply Skylar must have been suffering to feel like that was his only option. And now, as he stood there, hearing Skylar tell him that he didn't deserve something - what was it? His friendship? His care? His affection? - it felt like a knife twisting in his chest.
`
"Sky, I don't understand," Alex whispered his voice barely more than a breath. His hand, now empty and cold without Skylar's, hovered for a moment as if unsure what to do before he let it fall to his side. The helplessness he felt was overwhelming, and for a brief moment, he didn't know if he could handle it. The thought of losing Skylar, truly losing him, was too much to bear. But even as he stood there, Alex knew that he couldn't just let Skylar go, not like this.
`
Alex couldn't let Skylar believe, even for a second, that he would simply walk away because he'd been told to or because things had gotten hard. Skylar had asked him to stay, had wanted him to try - for the sake of whatever was between them. And yet, now Skylar was the one trying to push him away. The contradiction wasn't lost on Alex, and the hurt it stirred in him cut deep. But walking away wasn't an option. Not now. Not ever. Taking a shaky breath, Alex moved closer to the bed, refusing to break eye contact. His heart pounded in his chest, but his resolve held firm, even as the tears burned at the corners of his eyes, threatening to spill over. "I don't deserve what?" His voice, though thick with emotion, grew steadier, more determined. There was no room for doubt in his tone now. He wasn't going to let Skylar retreat into this spiral of self-doubt and pain without a fight. He repeated the question, more forcefully this time, demanding an answer - not just for his sake, but for Skylar's too.

Alex's demand almost took Skylar back, but with the repeated question there was no hesitation in Sky's response. "You don't deserve me and I don't deserve you! You deserve better, and I deserve nothing!" Sky said with a raised tone, but there wasn't much anger in his voice rather pain and hurt. Only after he had said that he broke eye contact, he couldn't bare to look at Alex. Tears threatened to form again, but Sky squeezed his eyes shut, forcing any forming tears away.
'
Why was Alex even still here? Why did he care so much for a drug addict? Why did he care so much for me? All these questions in Skylar's head were left unanswered. He shook his head, opening his eyes again. "Why are you even still here?" Sky said, his voice breaking, tears beginning to form again. He clenched his jaw, not wanting to seem weak but it was inevitable.
'
Meanwhile, just outside the door Polly and Danielle stood. They talked about how Sky's doing and how his recovery will be. Rehab was also in the conversation, it was most likely what the next step was. There was no avoiding rehab, which sucked.

Alex felt the air leave his lungs when Skylar's words hit him. The sting was sharp, like a knife cutting deeper into the already raw wound in his heart. He had been bracing for something, but not this - not the crushing weight of Skylar's self-doubt, the cold finality of those words. It felt as if Skylar had struck directly at the most fragile part of him, and Alex was left grasping for breath, struggling to keep the emotions from overwhelming him. "Don't say that." His voice trembled, laden with emotion, as he shook his head in disbelief. "Please, don't say that." The words cracked in his throat but ALexp dressed on, refusing to let Skylar's despair pull him under. He wasn't going to lose him to this darkness, not when they were both standing on the edge of something so much bigger than the hurt that threatened to tear them apart.
`
"You think you don't deserve someone who cares about you?" Alex's voice rose, not in anger, but in anguish. "Someone who wants you to be okay? Someone who -" His words choked off, his throat tightening painfully as the weight of everything they had been through pressed down on him. "You deserve to be here. You deserve to be alive. You deserve..." He faltered, his mind searching desperately for the right words, for something that would reach Skylar through the wall he was trying to build between them. "You deserve everything, Skylar."
`
He could feel the tears burning behind his eyes, but he held them back, knowing that he couldn't let them fall now. The frustration was there too - anger, not at Skylar, but at the pain he was so willing to surrender to, at the way he was pushing away the people who cared about him. Alex clenched his fists, trying to keep himself calm, trying to find the balance between the emotions warring inside him. "I'm still here because I care about you, Skylar." His voice was firmer now, but still soft, still filled with the tenderness he couldn't suppress. "I'm here because I promised you earlier today that I'd try. That I wouldn't run away from this - from us - because things were hard." He swallowed hard, his gaze never wavering from Skylar's, willing him to understand, to see what he was trying so hard to convey.
`
"You think pushing me away will make this easier? You think I'll just give up because you tell me you're not worth it?" He shook his head, stepping even closer until there was barely any space between himself and the edge of the hospital bed. "I'm not running away from you, Skylar. Not now, not ever."

Skylar felt the echo of Alex's words in his mind. The intensity in Alex’s voice pierced through the sound of anything else, all he could hear was Alex. Yet, it only amplified the swirling chaos within him. He had been preparing for this moment, bracing himself for the inevitable arguing, but he had never expected Alex to fight so fiercely against the darkness enveloping him.
'
“Don’t say that.” The tremor in Alex’s voice was raw, a plea that struck at Skylar’s core despite his own thoughts. The thought of being undeserving clawed at him, wrapping around his mind as if his thoughts were all concealed in a cage. How could Alex see anything worthwhile in him when all he felt was failure?
'
Skylar clenched his jaw, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill. He had always been the one to push people away, convinced that if he did so first, the pain of losing them would be lessened. But here was Alex, standing firm, refusing to let him slip into the darkness. As Alex continued, his passion undeniable, Skylar felt a conflict brewing inside him. The warmth of Alex’s care collided with the icy grip of his own beliefs, and the tension felt unbearable.
Skylar took a shaky breath, the tightness in his throat echoing the weight of Alex’s unwavering gaze.
'
Skylar's breath caught in his throat, the weight of those words settling heavily in the air between them. Before he knew it he was up and out of the hospital bed. He pushed Alex, not enough to crash into the door behind him but just enough to get some space between them It was a total adrenaline rush, and despite being weak, he managed to stand his ground. "You think it would be easier if I dragged you down with me Alex?! Huh?" Sky rose his voice, this time with slight anger. He then pushed Alex again, this time making him hit the door. "You think I want to do that to you. I'm a fucking loser and you deserve better." Sky said, his tone lowered. He stared into Alex's eyes deeply, as the tension only increased. He was so close right now, face to face with him. He didn't know if he wanted to never see him again, or kiss him in that moment. His breathing only got quicker, as he brought a hand up to Alex's, quickly brushing against it before bringing that hand to Alex's waist. "You deserve better Alex." Skylars whispered, as his gaze slightly lowered on him.

Alex's resolve was solid, unwavering in the face of Skylar's attempt to push him away. He couldn't bear the thought of abandoning him, of leaving when things were tough - especially when Skylar seemed to want that. The idea of walking away left a bitter taste in his mouth, one that would haunt him for the rest of his life. No, he couldn't do it. He wouldn't be the coward who left because it was easier. He bit down on his lip, his gaze never straying from Skylar's, even as his mind spun with what to say and what words could possibly make him understand. His lips parted, ready to tell Skylar that it didn't matter if they dragged each other down, that maybe falling together would mean neither of them had to go through this alone. At least then, they would have someone to lean on, someone to hold onto, even in the darkest moments. But before he could say anything, Skylar was out of the hospital bed, his movements abrupt and full of energy that started Alex. Then Skylar was shoving him, and Alex staggered, barely managing to catch his balance before he could fall backward.
`
The shock was clear in his expression, his mouth open slightly, breath coming in shallow pants as he stared at Skylar. He hadn't expected this. Not the aggression, not the desperation in Skylar's eyes. When Skylar spoke, his words sharp and painful, Alex felt the sting in his chest as if each syllable was a blade carving into him. He nearly flinched at the harshness of it, at the tone of Skylar's voice that cut deep, though he shook his head in defiance, refusing to let the words sink into him. Before he could respond, he was shoved again, this time with enough force to pin Alex against the door. His body tensed, his heart hammering in his chest as he looked up at Skylar, eyes wide. The closeness of their bodies, and the way Skylar's hand landed on his waist, sent a ripple of confusion and emotion coursing through him. But more than that, it was the expression on Skylar's face that tore at him, the way he spoke as if convinced he was nothing but a burden, a weight dragging Alex down.
`
"You aren't a loser," Alex said, his voice trembling with emotion, but there was strength behind his words, a conviction he couldn't suppress. "You're not. You're so much more than you realize." He shook his head, his eyes burning with unshed tears as he stared at the boy in front of him, the boy he couldn't - wouldn't - give up on. He didn't know how to explain it, didn't know if there were even words for it, but Alex knew, deep down, that Skylar was worth fighting for. That no matter how broken or damaged Skylar felt, Alex wouldn't stop caring. He couldn't. With Skylar's hand still on his waist, Alex did his best to ignore the physical closeness, to push aside the way his pulse quickened in response. This wasn't about the touch; it was about the words between them, the pain that Skylar was trying to hide beneath anger and self-loathing.
`
When Skylar again insisted that Alex deserved better, that he didn't belong with someone like him, Alex shook his head, his voice breaking as he finally spoke. "If you felt that way - if you really thought we shouldn't be together- then why did you make me promise to try? Why did you ask me to stay, to for this, when I wanted to run?" His voice trembled, his words unsteady, filled with the weight of everything they had been through, everything they had shared. "Why, Skylar?" He searched Skylar's eyes, desperate for an answer, for some understanding of what had changed between them, of why Skylar was so willing to throw it all away now.

Skylars grip on Alex's waist loosened when he heard the words that came out of his mouth. "He wanted to run?" Sky asked himself. He pushed the thought aside, as anger began to rise again. "Because I fucked up Alex." Sky said, raising his voice again even though doing so wasn't going to help. "Alex." Sky pleaded though he wasn't sure what he was pleading for. He brought his other hand up, grabbing ahold of the other side of Alex's waist. He looked down and their bodies, almost touching. He was dying for them to be, but this wasn't the right time for that. He didn't know what else to say, he didn't know what he wanted and he couldn't make up his mind. His mind was jumbled with so many thoughts and emotions, that it felt like he was going crazy. He wanted to let Alex go because he deserved someone better, but yet he yearned to be closer in that exact moment. He held Alex's waist a little more firmly as he stepped a bit closer, being as close as they possibly could be.
'
Sky wanted to know everything he was thinking, and he wanted to tell everything to Alex, but he just couldn't. He couldn't speak those thoughts because they were too messed up. Wanting to kiss one second then wanted to never see him again the next. Sky grew a little more frustrated, but not with Alex, with himself. He winced slightly as he looked down, trying to collect himself before looking back up at him. His heartbeat sped up, and with the iv in his arm, the monitor beeped to how fast his heart was beating. But the sound of the beeps was drowned out by Sky, he was only focused on Alex. It was only when a feeling on them both being slightly pushed made everything else come back into reality. He took one hand off Alex's hips and pushed the opening door shut, "Not right now." He slightly yelled before the door was fully shut again. He didn't return his hand to Alex's waist, instead, it dropped to his side and the other hand loosened around his waist. He then dropped his other hand, and a frown threatened his face as he gazed into Alex's ocean eyes.

Alex shook his head at Skylar's response, his heart heavy with frustration and sorrow. He couldn't accept the reasoning Skylar was giving him, couldn't accept the idea that a few mistakes could define someone's worth. His emotions surged, rising like a tidal wave, but he fought to keep his voice steady. "Everyone makes mistakes." He said, his voice low but firm, his gaze locked on Skylar's brilliant green eyes. "But that doesn't mean they deserve to be cast aside or abandoned." He was trying so hard to stay calm, to keep the storm inside him from spilling over, even though every word felt like it was cutting him to pieces. He could feel the desperation in Skylar's words, the pain that lingered in the air between them, but he couldn't let go, couldn't back down now.
`
When Skylar said his name, it was almost a plea, so soft and broken that it made Alex's heartache. He bit down on the inside of his cheek to keep from losing control, to stop the tears that threatened to well up in his eyes. Skylar's voice held such raw emotion, and Alex couldn't help but feel as though the weight of it all was crushing him. He could feel Skylar's other hand coming to rest on his waist, the warmth of his touch sending a shiver down Alex's spine. He wasn't sure how much longer he could hold back everything he was feeling, the mix of fear, affection, anger, and sorrow swirling inside him.
`
For a moment, Alex wished more than anything that he could read Skylar's mind, to see through the layers of pain and confusion that clouded his thoughts. He wanted to understand what Skylar was thinking, what was driving him to say these things, to push Alex away when all he wanted to do was help. What was Skylar afraid of? Why couldn't he see how much Alex cared? He searched Skylar's expression, looking for any hint of clarity, but the storm raging in those green eyes only left him feeling more helpless.
`
Alex parted his lips to speak, to say something - anything - that might break through the walls Skylar had put up. But before the words could leave his mouth, he felt a sudden jolt, the door behind him pressing forward as someone on the other side attempted to open it. His body stiffened in surprise, a moment of panic flashing through him as he realized they were no longer alone. He glanced over his shoulder at the door, anticipating the arrival of a nurse, alerted by the rapid beeping of the machines monitoring Skylar's elevated heart rate, or perhaps his mother, worried and anxious after hearing their raised voices. Whoever it was, Alex knew they were about to intrude on this delicate, painful moment.
`
His heart pounded as he prepared to step aside, to let whoever it was into the room. But before he could move, Skylar's voice cut through the air, stopping him in his tracks. There was a determination in his tone, something that made Alex hesitate. Then Skylar was reaching out and pushing the door closed again, keeping them sealed off from the outside world. Alex's gaze shot back to him, his breath catching in his throat as he watched Skylar drop his hand from his waist and frown, the tension between them palpable. For a long, agonizing moment, silence hung in the air, thick and suffocating. Alex could feel his heart racing, his mind spinning as he tried to figure out what to say, how to break through the wall Skylar had built around himself. He couldn't just stand there, watching him retreat into that darkness. He couldn't lose him.
`
"I want to help you, Skylar," Alex whispered, his voice soft and filled with a quiet intensity. He took a small step forward, closing the distance between them, his eyes never leaving Skylar's face. "I don't care about your mistakes. I don't care how hard things get. I'm not going anywhere." His words trembled with emotion, but his resolve was steady. He had made a promise, and he intended to keep it, no matter how difficult things became. "I'm not giving up on you." He spoke with a gentleness that belied the strength of his determination. Skylar had pushed and pushed hard, but Alex wasn't going to let him push him away. "You don't have to carry this alone, Skylar. You don't have to fight by yourself." He could feel his own throat tightening as he spoke, the intensity of his emotions threatening to overwhelm him. But he refused to let them break him, not now.
`
"I'm here," Alex said, his voice barely above a whisper, yet filled with a fierce promise. He stepped even closer, until they were mere inches apart, his eyes searching Skylar's face for any sign that he was getting through to him, any crack in the armor Skylar had wrapped around himself. "And I'm not going anywhere."

The more and more Alex fought back, the more Sky wanted to push him away. This was something he never wanted to expose Alex to, and he didn't want to bring him into this spiral any further. This was something Sky had to go through alone in his mind. Having supportive people around him never was his forte, he didn't like having people help him whatsoever and in moments like this, the dark shadows surrounded him, refusing to let him out or anybody in. It was his own little forcefield, his protection. Sky's mind grew foggy, as many thoughts started to disappear. The only thing clouding his mind were the words Alex was speaking to him. He didn't want to believe him, but he could try. Not speaking, he listened intently as all his thoughts became thoughts of Alex. His heart began to speed up even faster as he watched Alex close the gap that had formed between them. Sky needed to believe him, and believe in himself. The need to let Alex in was so strong, so the battle between his mind and that armour he had built around himself began. With each word Alex spoke, it cracked at the forcefield, peeling it away bit by bit. He breathed in deeply, feeling the heat of Alex's face on his icy skin. He gazed into Alex's eyes, looking at him like a deer in headlights. His stare then softened as his eyes trailed down to his lips. He then moved his face closer to Alex's, feeling his hot breath now. Sky didn't know what to say, so he continued to get closer until his lips were hovering over Alex's. Closing his eyes, his lips softly hit Alex's. Bringing his hands back up to his waist, he pulled him in even closer so then their bodies were now moulded together. This was Sky's way of letting Alex in, and he was sure this would tell him that. Sky kissed him slowly, and softly, pulling away even slower. Immediately his eyes looked back into his, and his heart nearly skipped a beat.

As Alex gazed up into Skylar's eyes, a wave of desperation and hope washed over him. He clung to the small chance that his words had pierced through the thick walls Skylar had erected around himself, that somehow Sky would see just how much Alex wanted to be there for him, how much he wasn't willing to walk away. No matter what Skylar said or how hard he tried to push him away, Alex wasn't going anywhere. Time seemed to stretch endlessly as they stared at each other, Alex searching Skylar's green eyes for any sign that his words had reached him. The tension between them was palpable, thick, and suffocating, as if the entire world had fallen away and it was just the two of them suspended in this moment.
`
Then, something shifted. It was subtle at first - barely perceptible - but Alex noticed it. The faintest crack in Skylar's carefully constructed armor. His heart stuttered in his chest, beating wildly with a mixture of anxiety and hope as Skylar's expression softened. It was as though the weight of everything they'd been through - the pain, the confusion, the doubt - was beginning to crumble beneath the surface. And then Skylar's eyes dropped to his lips. Alex drew in a sharp breath, the anticipation making his pulse race. His throat felt tight, and he swallowed hard, frozen in place as he watched Skylar inch closer. The space between them shrank until Skylar's face was so close that Alex could feel the warmth of his breath, the air humming with an unspoken intensity. His heart thudded against his ribs as panic welled up within him. They were in a hospital. The sterile walls, the beeping monitors, the fluorescent lights - none of this felt like the right place, the right time. What if someone walked in? What if they were seen? But before he could act on his fear, Skylar's lips were on his.
`
Shock coursed through Alex's veins, paralyzing him for a split second. His mind raced, a whirl of confusion and emotion, unsure of how to process the suddenness of it. Skylar's hands found their way to his waist, pulling him closer, and Alex felt the jolt of warmth from the touch, sparking something deep within him. His body stiffened, his thoughts tugging him in two opposing directions. One voice in his mind screamed for him to pull away, to be cautious, to worry about the fact that they were in a hospital and could be caught at any moment, to be concerned with Skylar's condition. But the other voice - a quieter, more insistent one - whispered to him not to resist. This was Skylar letting him in. This was Skylar showing, in his own way, that Alex mattered, that his presence was wanted, needed.
`
That realization broke through the fog of uncertainty, and slowly, almost hesitantly, Alex responded. His body relaxed, and he allowed himself to melt into the kiss, his lips moving softly against Skylar's in a way that felt both familiar and new. His heart hammered wildly in his chest, the rush of emotions too overwhelming to sort out, but in that brief moment, none of it mattered. The kiss was tender, filled with the kind of vulnerability that Skylar had been hiding from the world. When Skylar finally pulled away, Alex felt the sudden absence of warmth like a physical ache. His breath was shaky, his chest tight with the whirlwind of emotions he'd barely managed to hold back. He opened his eyes and found Skylar staring back at him, his green gaze locked onto Alex's own blue eyes.
`
The silence that followed was thick with unspoken words. Alex's mind was spinning, his heart still racing from the kiss. He wanted to say something, to bridge the gap that had opened between them, to tell Skylar that everything was going to be okay. But the words felt tangled up inside him, too fragile, too uncertain to speak aloud just yet. Instead, he let his eyes do the talking. He held Skylar's gaze, silently promising that he wasn't going to let him go, that he wasn't afraid to stand by his side no matter how hard things got. His hands still trembled slightly from the intensity of the moment and came up to gently rest on Skylar's shoulders, a small but comforting gesture that spoke volumes. He didn't need words right now - Skylar likely didn't need them either. What they needed was to simply feel that connection, that closeness they had been fighting for. "Sky," Alex finally whispered, his voice barely audible but filled with raw emotion. He wasn't sure what he wanted to say, but the name felt like a lifeline between them, a reminder of everything they had been through, of everything that still lay ahead. "I'm not leaving. I'm right here. Okay?" He gave a small, tentative smile, his hands still resting lightly on Skylar's shoulders. "We'll figure this out." He said softly, his voice steady despite the emotions swirling within him. "Together."
