Exactly...I only use temple offerings when I have a big space for that exact reason, and I basically use the wreaths when I see a Grendel or get 6 bears or something

It makes no sense for items to count tiles you've already stepped on because of how the explore levels are generated in the first place. If I use a wreath at the end of a path for one creature and then I have to retrace 10 tiles I've already walked on to get to the next new space.. I've wasted half the item already.

Would be better if i wasnt one of those people with laggy explore olease dont double count the tiles lag makes me step on 🤣

I agree, it's not the best :/ the same thing happens when you burn an offering at a temple and a wolf gets boosted stats for a set number of steps

Nah that sucks, the items count the already stepped tiles whats the point 💀

You can usually tell the difference by the button on the page. If it says; "hunt" it won't count as an enemy. Enemies have "battle" on the button.

Sabbath, unfortunately it does count each tile step, even if its one you already been on :/

like I thought if you go over tiles you've already been on, the item doesn't count that as a step

Chat I have a question: the explore items that last 'x' amount of steps.. those usually count NEW tiles as steps right? or am I tripping

Have you noticed a dull variety of roleplays lately? Or maybe a lack of inspiration when it comes to creating and/or writing characters? This is a problem I and a few other casual roleplayers have noticed, and I thought we could have a discussion on how to expand WP roleplays to their former glory.
Lately I've been noticing a lot of repitition or similar plots. Most of these roleplays fail to take off as well. I think we need to brainstorm new ideas to give new life into the sign-ups. Another issue is when a topic does take off, a slew of mimics appears and sticks for the next indefinite amount of time, once again trapping the forum in a cycle of endless overdone plots.
What do we think could liven up the sign-ups and maybe cause more roleplays to be a success again?

this is the biggest reason why i havent touched roleplaying on here in a long time lol
its the same roleplays being recycled for years and years
or its the same people only posting roleplay sign ups and the sign ups never take off

I've been trying to start up an apocolypse rp but not many people seem interested so far. I'm thinking of trying to start advertising again. There does seem to be a lot of wolf or horse rps at the moment though.

Yeah, and a lot of those who were good have left. I miss the good RPing days. Plus it's hard to find those that are active enough to keep up.

I'm can't be entirely sure, but I think it's because the roleplays currently aren't properly balancing the detail of the plot (on a scale from one paragraph of very very vague explanation to a very detailed plan of everything that will and can happen) with the quality of the RPers characters/writing quality (which again has a massive range.) And then on top of that you've got to find a sweet spot in the level of literacy that's reasonable for everyone (like in exam season - some people don't have time to be churning out 2k posts every few days as much as they'd like to; there's other real life things which of course take precedence) with progression of plot and just general interest. As you've all sort of said, there's quite a few ideas that have been massively overdone which has made them way more dull then they were before.

I've got a few roleplays hidden that are half written out, with ideas that I haven't really seen around (unless they're in the 100+ pages of sign ups, which I'm not going to go search though) But for me it's a case of figuring out when I'm free enough to actually start something up. With mine, I've planned to have a basic plot, but leave a wider range of options for smaller plot points that the RPers can lead into. And then I'm trying to figure out a way for people (and their characters) to more easily leave the RP without their absence leaving a massive void and ultimately killing off the RP. Perhaps the roleplays should take theirselves a little less seriously - obviously there is nothing wrong in a ton of worldbuilding and plotting, but a bit more freedom might do them some good?

I think a good writer can make any dull plot interesting, and on that note any "bad" writer can become a good writer with time and practice :)

Also @Spell (or any other longtime roleplayers) what years would you consider the good days? I'm curious :>

And forgive me for waffling on. I really really enjoy to RP, but sometimes it feels like there's nothing that massively catches my eye, like you said with originality.

I don't RP much on WP any more, on some days it feels like I've aged out of it a bit ahah. I used to roleplay on WP during 2018 and 2019. So I can't comment much on recent RPs.

However, I think almost the 'death of forum roleplay' has been a pretty common things amongst many of the forum sites I used to frequent. It feels like forum and text-based roleplay has died down a lot, and I can't help but wonder if more people are switching to online games and simulator games rather than forums.

I'm currently planning out another wolf rp but I don't think its original enough to gain people. I want to make a rp that is fairly experienced, but it's hard to do so with only so many roleplayers on this site. I agree with Moose that some roleplays are either too detailed or not detailed enough. I often fall into this habit accidentally myself. Would any of you have tips for starting up a roleplay? I really want to get my ideas going, but I'm just not quite sure how to do so.

Attention! This requires lots of reading.

~

Sorry, I didn't intend to write a documentary, I just find this an interesting thing to discuss.

I've been wishing to make my dinosaur RP, but I've just been lacking motivation to write everything down that I must to even post the thing out for others to sign up for, and I fear that if mine does become good, then someone else is just gonna copy it and say "it's their own unique RP" and then that one will take off even more than mine did.

So I do understand what Salt Shaker means, and I do feel the same way sometimes. The only RPs I really ever sign up for anymore is Imperial Sand's RPs, because they do an awesome job keeping it unique.

I think most RPs either greatly lack literacy, or expect you to write a whole page-long post. And maybe most of the reason why lots of RPs die, is because everyone gets bored of writing an infinite series of one-liners or 2,000+ words every three days to keep up with RPs. I think the reason why Fangoffire's awesome Strive to Survive is really keeping up and alive, is because no one has to make 2,000+ word posts, but no one can make less than 150 words. It keeps others wanting to keep RPing it, because they don't need to spend 2 hours of their day, writing a post for an online wolf game when they could spend much more time doing other stuff.

Also another reason is because lots of players will just disappear the moment there isn't at least one post a day. I don't know if this is entirely true or not, but in my past RPs, this is definitely how it felt. Don't leave a RP the moment someone doesn't make a post at least once a day. Seriously. Remember that others have their own life outside of WP. Not like me saying this would help at all, since in every RP it at least says that once in the rules, and no one listens.

Now back to the literacy, I do think that literate RPs could live for a long time, and keep going for a long time, if they weren't as demanding. Like Spellbound seems to do a great job at ensuring that no one only posts once a month, but also giving others some time to do their posts, without having to spend hours just writing one post so they don't get kicked out.

Another thing is, I think the RP hosts don't enforce their posting rules enough. I've vanished from some RPs for weeks, and never once got PMs from the RP host, and when I return, they don't even question where I'd went for so long. Now I'm not saying to send someone a PM the moment they've taken a day over the limit to post, but just don't completely ignore the fact that they disappeared, since others will probably be waiting on their posts.

I agree with Moose on the talk about writing quality. I think writing quality does greatly impact the success of a RP. If someone writes too little, everyone is just gonna try and find a different RP with more literacy, and if there is too much, no one is gonna want to read all of it.

This may be edited later.

There's definitely a lack of new topics. Most roleplays I've seen nowadays either follow the same storyline or are reposted / recycled roleplays that never exit the sign-up stage. Most of the best roleplays I've seen occurred in 2019, and especially the early to mid 2020. After that, there's been a massive dwindle in both roleplayers and roleplays alike. Forums don't reach the usual 3-4 pages anymore, and you're lucky if you even see 2 pages full of new forums. And yes this means there's lack of diversity. Diversity is a massive issue, especially with recycled content that is spit out every week or so.

A large issue nowadays is commitment. I've noticed roleplay creators have a tendency to reserve important or high position roles for themselves and friends of theirs, leaving what I call "scraps" for the remainder. This can be generally unfair, as it reatricts creativity outside that close group. When there's a lack of creativity, there's a lack of will. This then translates to abandonment by those who are outsiders from this group. It's unfair. So we absolutely need to change this "hogging" of positions and allow more people to hold the reigns.

Another issue is engagement. Hosts, a good 2 or so years back, when roleplays were very bountiful and plenty, were much more engaged with their forums and participants. They wouldn't wait long to make discussion forums, would check up on others, etc etc. Nowadays there's less of that. Engagement helps, because it allows for easy communication. Without communication, roleplays die. This is something that needs working on too.

I won't say this is a perfect fix, because it isn't, but hopefully these criticisms are constructive enough that they help future and current roleplay hosts alike
