Dragons with tail barbs are very sought out, both because they're dangerous and expensive. The barbs are decorations typically reserved for the rich, or the extremely skilled hunters that manage to slay a dragon with such a barb. Of course, Dallas being an explorer, occasionally takes Java out and explores planets he's never seen when he has no work to do.

Long story short, Dallas showed back up at base with a cut open neck and a nearly dead Java.
