The Escape Of The Century

Chapter One

CLANK, the sound of the metal bars of the jail cell I was in, it was lonely in here I didn't have any family to talk to and all my friends ditched me when the cops showed up all too scared to show their faces in case anyone recognised them. I was counting down the days until my next parole hearing, I had already been in this excuse of a prison, but I guess that was the message.

I had been sentenced for life for burglary, armed robbery and assault but I didn't mean to do any. Yes, I had done it, but it wasn't my fault I was scared I was only 15. I am now 17 two years is a lot of time for a minor I tried to tell them, but my case wasn't good enough. I had been caught up in the wrong people since my parents had died, a suicide they said but my parents were so kind and happy I know something else happened but I'm too scared to tell anyone. I was getting used to life in prison I would die in here, so I had to make allies not friends allies, no one is your friend in here that was my first mistake in here when I arrived.

My parole hearing was in a couple of days after my birthday, I was going to be eighteen an adult so if I couldn’t get out, I was going to have to go to an adult prison. “WILLOWS!” Ah the usual shouting and banging from the guards, “I’m awake!” I stood up with my hands on my head, the guard opened the rusty jail cell door, and I walked out. “Move it!” The guard kicked me behind the knee causing it to buckle and resulting in me falling. The cell next door had a boy called Alex Jacobs; he wasn’t there today though I wondered where because he usually mocked me every time I went past. “Up move it!” I winced in pain but stood up quickly and carried on walking with a slight limp if I didn’t, they’d drag me, and I wasn’t in the mood for that.

I walked into the canteen and put my hands down, I walked around the edge of the room avoiding the bins in the way to the trays. “What is it today, Cruiser?” I asked the boy behind the counter that wasn’t his actual name everyone had a nickname if you were well known or had been in here a while, “Tha usual, always tha usual.” I walked over to my usual table the second at the back on the left, Cooper walked over to me at my table, “Hey ma’e can I sit?”

“Sure mate” he sat down opposite me and offered me some of his bread I took it and offered him some mash, food was currency in here and he respected me, so I respected him. Bennett and Spider came over, Spider chucked a carrot at me “Where’d you get this from your mother?!” We all laughed joking around, “Thanks mate” we joked around all the time it was how we were still alive.

I finally broke the silence, “Do any of you lads know where Jacobs is?” They thought for a minute before Spider answered, “He wasn’t in his cell?”

“No, I walked past him and got kicked but he didn’t mock me like he usually does he wasn’t there” they all looked a bit shocked

“There’s Skull ask him” Cooper said while gesturing over to him at a table on the other side, “Come on lads” I said and we got up and walked over to him at his table, “Do yous know where Jacobs is?” I asked Skull and his group

“We were just wondering the same” they looked at us wide eyed and confused,

“Ok mates not to worry, he wasn’t in his cell” we walked away, and I gave Spider my tray, “See you boys later” I walked off to the library for my work assignment.
