Ravus, this isn't your fault nor is it your dogs. Dogs have another sense which can help babies of all kinds but sometimes trying to help them can hurt them. The fledgling was a dove right? Some types of doves will push their weak babies that will not make it out of the nest to make room for the stronger ones that have a better chance at surviving.

All in all, it doesn't get any better when an animal dies, especially a baby. This will not be the last time this happens. All of it is a part of nature whether we like it or not. What you can do however is leave out worms, birdseed and other stuff for the doves so that it won't happen as often again. I hope this helps :)

Thank you. It does make me feel a bit better.

It survived until the rescuers showed up to pick it up. I have no idea if it's gonna make it but it did seem to be more lively when I moved it to the cardboard box (It was sitting upright and flapped it's wings when I tried to get it).Hopefully all is well and it can be released again once it's ready.

Such a dumb accident, but I guess you're right that we're not really at fault.

Dogs have a prey instinct and in some breeds, its more likely to influence their decisions. It could be that your dog was curious, but confused (do I chase it? do I attack it? is it a puppy? should I protect it?)
I'm sorry this happened to you, I can imagine how upsetting an incident like this would be. I dont like theres anything you could have done to make it better.
Good job on calling the rescue, I hope the little dove will be okay.

Most of the time my dogs thinking process seems to be "catch, then think" when she sees something move. She didn't bite down on the dove more than she needed to to hold it. I don't think she wanted to kill it, but I also don't know what she thought she was doing (':
